A service and dedication to the memory of Jacek Grzybowscy, who sadly died in the Remutaka Forest Park over 14 years ago.

The 28-year-old Polish national died in 2008 during a one day tramp.

The event was organised by Alan Thompson.

The cross was erected by local residents, at the end of Sunny Grove, who helped in

the search for him and was also attended by the Polish Society and members of the Polish Embassy.

The service was filmed and sent to Jacek’s parents in Poland, they have sent a letter of gratitude back to the organisers that said: “once again, we thank you very much with all our hearts and wish you the best moments in your life.”

Improved Telecommunications for Coast Road and Catchpool Work has started on a 20 metre monopole in the Remutaka Forest.

This monopole will improve the broadband and mobile phone services in the Coast Road and Catchpool area.

For too long the residents and businesses have struggled with poor telecommunication services.

This work is being undertaken by the Rural Connectivity Group (RCG) a joint venture between Spark, Vodafone and 2 Degrees.

This collaborative body has been tasked to deliver the second

phase of the government’s Rural Broadband Initiative, (RBI2).

The work has just started and the great “switch on” is planned for September 2022.

This facility will provide fast wireless broadband and 4G mobile phone services.to both the residents of the Coast Road and the many thousands of visitors to the area.

Fast broadband means that working from home, online transactions will be a reality. Businesses can enjoy the flexibility of mobile eftpos transactions and tour oper-

ators will be able to take on-line bookings.

All standard stuff for those of us in town but massive progress for our rural community.

Trampers and visitors to the Remutuka Park will be safe in the knowledge that there is the back up of a mobile network, should they need it.

Check out the map which provides the predicted coverage provided by the facility. The area coloured pink shows where the coverage is expected.

DISEASE CONTROL: By Wally Richards One of the products that we have that is excellent for preventing and the control of a number of plant diseases is Perkfection.

We named it Perkfection for Roses as the commercial product is called Perk Supa.

Gardeners have found it a boon in prevention of diseases such as black spot and rust on roses during the season.

Perkfection along with Magic Botanic Liquid make a great combination for plant health.

Silverleaf disease in stone fruit and roses has been arrested if you notice the disease early and spray Perkfection once a month during the growing season and starting again in the spring when the plants start to leaf up.

Buxus disease is a curse for people growing Buxus hedges but a bimonthly spray will keep the hedge looking great.

I remember a gardener that had a Buxus hedge that had got do bad there were hardly any leaves left.

He used Perkfection and after about 6 months the hedge was back to it full glory.

There is a product out there for Buxus disease which as far as I am aware its a mild solution of the chemical in Perkfection.

Apparently from feed back I have heard that it does help Buxus recovery but not as quickly and as effectively as our one does.

Downy mildew or dry berry will be cured with Perkfection.

During wet times when water sensitive plants start to have root rot then sprays of Perfection will speed up recovery as long as the plant has not gone beyond the point of no return.

So what is Perkfection then?

The active ingredient of Perkfection is ‘Phosphite ion’ or Phosphonic Acid. (Potassium ions are also present).

The safety when handling Perkfection can be described by the following; formulations of neutral salts, which do not contain wetting agents, would have very little, if any at all, absorption through the skin.

Only people with extreme allergy problems would show any sensitivity.

Being neutral salts it has no corrosive effect and only cause irritation to people with very sensitive skin.

If spray drift entered the eyes then the irritation would be similar to that experienced with a salt solution.

Corrosive damage will not occur.

This all means that Perkfection is safe to handle and spray, though all care of oneself should be taken, it is a product that you do not have to use extreme measures, as one should do, with many other garden sprays of a chemical nature.

The next important thing is “There is NO WITHHOLDING PERIOD” when used on food crops.

I would suggest however if you pick something that you have sprayed that day, wash it as you may have a ‘tainted’ taste.

Perkfection is used extensively by commercial growers (as PerK Supa) on produce and fruit as its safe, effective, in control and not restrictive on exports of produce.

We have suggested Perkfection for Roses and Other Plants as an alternative to more toxic sprays, for the assistance in recovery from/or prevention of, the following problems, Black spot, Downy Mildew, Phytophthora Root rot, Canker, heart rot, damping off, crown rot, leaf blight, silver leaf, late blight, collar rot, pink rot, brown rot, Armillaria, and gummy stem rot.

Now that’s quiet a list of diseases and it also means that many of your disease related problems can be overcome with this safe to use product.

Besides using Perkfection over your roses for the likes of Black spot and Downy mildew you can also use it as a spray over all your fruiting plants and trees including your straw-

It can be used also over your potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, beans, cucurbits (cucumbers etc) lawns, onions, passion fruit, Cauliflowers, cybidium orchids and ornamental plants and vines..

In fact there is no where you cannot use Perkfection to advantage.

Being ‘Synthetic Organic Phosphates’ what you are doing, is placing this valuable material, onto the foliage of your plants, where it is very readily absorbed and transferred through the whole of the plant.

This fortifies the plant’s cells, increases the plant’s immune system and makes your plants less susceptible to invading pathogens.

There is however a down side, as with any good thing, you can have too much and the recommendation is to use Perkfection at 5 ml per litre of spray once a month only and only for about 5 times in a season.

(Note a season is the normal period of time for that crop or plant. Roses are from Spring till Autumn. Most annuals 5-6 months.)

The reason is that, you can over load your plant with organic phosphates causing a clogging of the cells and halting growth until the system clears.

Prevention is better than cure and by spraying your plants in the spring you give the greatest protection to leaves and fruit, autumn spray will give greatest protection to roots and tubers.

I have suggested that on the 1st of the month to spray your roses and other plants with Perkfection, Mycorrcin Plus and Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL).

14 days later (15th) spray with Mycorrcin Plus and MBL. If insects problems occur then spray with the most suitable Neem Product.

(Neem Tree Oil, scale, Mealy Bug, thrips and mites, Caterpillars and beetles; Add Super Pyrethrum for aphids and whitefly.)

All these sprays are compatible.

They are all safe to use with most of them being organic and that’s what we need in this day and age.

Hutt City Council adopts annual plan Hutt City Council has unanimously adopted the Annual Plan 2022 – 2023, setting out Council’s plan and budget for the new financial year. This Annual Plan is year two of Council’s 10-year plan.

Each year Council must produce an Annual Plan which is based on the 10-Year Plan and which sets out the budget for that particular year and includes any changes from the 10-Year Plan.

Mayor Campbell Barry said that the Annual Plan builds on our 10Year Plan, and demonstrates that our community’s ambitions are at the heart of the investments we’re making.

“This Annual Plan is all about getting the basics right for our communities and businesses. Its core focus is all about ramping up renewals of our ageing underground pipes, and tackling growing congestion through improvements

to our transport network. Important progress will also be made on Naenae Pool, RiverLink, and other vital projects for our city.

“With the rising cost of living and price escalation impacting so many of our households and businesses, we have been clear from day one in preparing this Annual Plan that cost increases for council must be offset through savings or reprioritising our work programme. We have delivered on that in this Annual Plan,” says Campbell Barry.

Hutt City Council Chief Executive Jo Miller also noted the progress made against the 10-Year Plan, especially in light of challenges like COVID-19.

Silverstream Landfill charges are changing to a weights-based system. More information can be found on Hutt City Council’s website. There is also a new approach to landfill fee discounts including an exemption for charities as agreed earlier by Council.

Fees and charges have been updated in line with inflation. The full fees and charges list can be found as appendix 1 to the Annual Plan 2022 – 2023.

Wainuiomata got the level of revenge they were after by beating Johnsonville 27-22 in the opening round of the Hardham Cup rugby competition on Saturday.

Wainuiomata went on to overturn the 18-13 loss they had suffered to Johnsonville six weeks ago and coach Daniel Smith says his team couldn’t be happier.

“We celebrated like it was a big deal,” he says.

“I was pleased to see that it meant something to the playing group and hopefully it gives us a bit of momentum,” he says.

Wainuiomata outscored Johnsonville four tries to three.

“I think we took our chances, which we didn’t do in our first encounter,” Daniel says.

“They took their chances six weeks ago and we took ours on Saturday.”

Daniel says he was thrilled with how his team dominated ruck time and the collision area.

He says while they got dominated in the opening two scrums of the game, he was happy with how they battled back after that.

“Our line out was what it was, it’s always a bit of a grind for us, but we found a way to pull it out which is important.”

Wainuiomata will travel to Paremata-Plimmerton on Saturday.

Paremata-Plimmerton prevailed in their earlier encounter on May 21 but 22-15.

Daniel says the team is keen to build on the momentum and is eager to get some silverware to finish a challenging season.

Sport is an extra for many families in 2022 The barriers for Joe and Jill Average to play sport go far beyond cost in 2022.

I say this as a group called Affordable Sports for Greater Wellington look to pressure Wellington City Council to drop fees to make playing grassroots sports more accessible however, in my view, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

The group has been pulled together by five major codes: Wellington Hockey, Capital Football, Capital Basketball, Cricket Wellington, and Wellington Rugby, as well as College Sport Wellington.

Group Chair Lisa Jones said councils are making it too expensive to play sport because of the unfair fees to provide and maintain fields, turfs and indoor facilities.

“The rise of the cost of living now makes these fees a real threat to participation in sport. Councils say sport is good for residents’ wellbeing but do nothing to keep fees from going up, it’s now time for us to do something about it.”

The Wellington region has the most expensive fees in New Zealand for sports, clubs and schools to use Council grounds. Councils charge fees for use of fields in

competitions, and fees to clubs for training, and for facilities such as changing rooms,” she says.

While all that is perfectly logical and is one of the barriers to sport, I think the lifestyle of families no longer make sport as viable during the week.

Parents often work two jobs and it’s a commitment to get kids to practices and games.

Gone are the days where kids can walk to their trainings and home again, many are unlikely to see public transport as a timely way of getting to these events on time either.

So that leaves time-poor parents having to shuttle kids all around the place.

Then comes the realisation that the child won’t be the next All Black, Black Cap or Olympian, their interest level drops and the social pressures of having a boyfriend or girlfriend, alcohol and passing NCEA increase.

My partner and I discussed that if we had a child we’d try to steer them clear of high contact sports like rugby because the risk of serious injury is greater than say basketball, tennis or squash.

As a couple of cricket tragics,

watching your child play for up to eight hours on a Saturday is a huge time commitment and the traditional Saturday model of sport, where parents are out the door at 8am and on chilly sidelines, is outdated.

I’d much rather see my potential child of the future play midweek basketball at night, indoors and get it over and done with so our weekends would be free.

Priorities change once you’re just playing sport for the fun and fitness of it and as the economic reality starts to bite, social sport in 2022 may be seen as a luxury for many.

Wainuiomata share spoils with Olympic The sun was out as the Capital Premier side travelled to Wakefield Park to face Wellington Olympic looking to bounce back from the narrow defeat last week. Wainuiomata started dominantly and they took an early lead as Joel Evans rifled his shot into the roof of the net. Adam Trott was a brick wall in the Wainuiomata goal as he made several saves to deny Olympic finding an equaliser. Both sides had their chances, but it stayed 1-0 going in to the sheds at half time. The second half began and it took ten minutes for Olympic to find their equaliser. Wainuiomata pressed and they thought they found their second as Callum Martins header beat the keeper but the referee ruled it out for a foul on the keeper.

Not even two minutes later and Callum found the net again but this one was not to be taken away from him. The intensity lifted, the banter amongst both sets of supporters became louder and the final fifteen minutes was edge of your seat stuff but it was Olympic who found the equaliser for the second time in the game from the penalty spot. Neither team were able to find the winning goal despite both sides creating numerous chances and the game finished 2-2.

The Reserves and The Thirds all had their games postponed due to the opposition coming down with COVID, so it was Halfbaked who

took centre stage at Richard Prouse. They welcomed Stokes Valley and in a 6 goal affair, it was the men in green and black who came out on top as they won 4-2. The highlight of this game coming from defender Anthony Cutts who never scores a goal, but he got one that will live long in the memory. Picking the ball up on the edge of the box, he had no hesitation to pull the trigger and his strike found the cobwebs of the top corner leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. The Horns travelled to Fraser Park to face Lower Hutt and it was another narrow defeat for the Wainui side as they fell to a 3-2 defeat.

Only two of our Masters sides were in action as Pasifika’s game was postponed also due to COVID. In Masters 3, The Undertakers had a good day at the office against Tawa as they were comfortable 4-1 winners. In Masters 6, Shane Sumner’s goal for the OC’s was not enough to steer the side to victory as they fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat against North Wellington.

Finally Sunday saw the Wildcats host newly promoted Miramar Rangers Reserves in their Women’s 2 match. Brooke Neary again showing her class and composure in front of goal getting one of Wainui’s two goals as they earned back to back victories with a 2-0 win.
