Dynamic duo

Two eight-year-old friends from Newlands have put others ahead of themselves by raising more than $500 for the Wellington City Mission through their bake sale.

Rose Kendall and Holly MacKenzie, who are Year 4 students at Paparangi School spent eight hours baking together before selling it all outside New World Newlands.

The pair eventually raised $562 for their efforts.

“We wanted to do a fundraiser so that we could help the homeless people,” Rose says.

“We wanted to help people who are struggling more than others, because if they get sick they don’t have anyone to look after them.

“We thought it would be fun to bake and meet people.

“We made cupcakes, muffins, brownies and biscuits.

“Some other parents from school made biscuits, and cupcakes. loads of cupcakes.

“I love walking so we went on a flyer drop so that people would know to come down to our fundraiser.”

“We were going to do a fundraiser for the hospital or the SPCA,” Holly says.

“But we changed our minds as we were inspired by my dad giving money to a homeless man in Rotorua. and I realised how lucky I am.

“We were dancing with happiness, but had so much fun doing all the baking and flyer drops as well.”

The girls say they were thrilled with how generous people were with many people simply donating and not taking any baking.

“Lots of people are nice and want to help,” Holly says.

James’ legacy lives on with music therapy classes

Today is bitter-sweet for Newlands resident Nicola Swan and her family.

It marks three years since son James, died but also the start of music therapy courses for children funded by the Swan Nest which was established in his honour.

The Swan Nest will begin music therapy classes at Johnsonville’s Collective Community Hub this morning after securing enough funding for seven children to attend the weekly classes this term.

The Swan Nest endeavours to facilitate a compassionate environment for children and families on their journey with their child living with a complex health condition or terminal illness.

James, who was five-yearsold, died of a neuromuscular

condition so rare there wasn’t even a name for it.

Since then the Swan Trust has been established and fronted by Nicola, to improve the lives of children in a similar position.

The music therapy classes are seen as the first major step.

“It’s bitter-sweet because it’s a horrendous day but it’s great to realise something that we were told would be impossible,” Nicola says.

“To have families receive music therapy with no cost to them and see the weight of the world lifted off their shoulders for an hour is great.”

The classes allow children to express how they feel and what the world is like for them without needing to find the words.

“It’s inviting and it’s fun and there is always something they can do with an instrument or listening to an instrument.”

Nicola praised long-time

supporter William YIP from Collective First National Real Estate who established the Hub. “Without the Hub, we would not be starting on Thursday because we couldn’t have afforded the space and the music therapist.

“William is a great community man and deserved a lot of credit.”

“We have 500 families who need our service and we can’t find that yet but hopefully this helps with finding funding.”

Nicola says James would have benefited from the therapy but she was glad his memory could help other families in need.

Nicola had a speech and art therapist at the ready when funding was available for the Trust to expand its efforts.

Chris released an animated music video for one of the songs called The Octopus Song which can be viewed on YouTube. It was a $12,500 video largely funded by NZ On Air. “It’s an honour to be nominated for an award like this,” he says. “It’s nice to know that the album has been enjoyed, not only by the children that you do it all for but also your peers.”

Chris says the pandemic had both a positive and negative impact for him professionally.

“The reality is that album was

written in my home in Johnsonville and I wouldn’t have had the time to put it together had it not been for the pandemic.

“Obviously, it’s been a very difficult last 12 months for the creative community and not being able to perform has been difficult not just for me but for everyone.”

Chris has received funding for a follow-up second album from New Zealand On Air which he started on Sunday.

“I hope to release the songs as singles and then the album will follow after that.”

Wellington City Council has voted to add mana whenua representation to Council committees later this year, with representatives both having a vote and being paid.

The Council voted 11-3 to enable one representative each from Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika and Ngāti Toa Rangatira to sit on each Council committee and subcommittee and have voting rights, from 1 July.

Youth mental health campaign petitioning for wellbeing education

Leading a campaign for better mental health education in schools is former college student Dallas Serj who leads the Youth Services Union.

As a year 13 student he was instrumental in bring together students from throughout the North Island to petition government for better mental health education in schools and has continued leading the Union now that he has finished college.

Schools with representatives of the Union are Saint Bernards, Hutt Valley High, Orans, Wellington East Girls, Wainuiomata High School and Onslow College.

Along with fellow Union leader from Onslow College James Farrar they recently presented a case to provide better mental health education in schools to Labour minister of education Chris Hipkins.

Armed with statistics from Labour policies and from the Unions own investigations the group proposed that Labour finally put the effort into putting mental health into the

education curriculum.

“We had three demands and the main one was we wanted funding to be rerouted from providing more services to educating the youth in the schools,” he says.

Dallas says they came away from the meeting bitterly disappointed.

“We were fed the same policies Labour have been putting out in a flash new polish. We were told what we are proposing is very difficult to do,” he says.

The Union had gathered massive support from communities around the North Island and gathered over 6000 signatures.

“For too long the Government albeit Labour or National haven't acknowledged what a true crisis the Mental Health sector is in, for too long has New Zealand been forced under a broken system dating back generations, for too long we have lost our loved ones and young ones to suicide.

Enough is Enough,” he says.

On the 26th of April they launched a new campaign for change.

What they want is for the government to put more effort into funding more BluePrint MH101 courses in communities and schools - Putting more pressure on schools to include more Mental Health Internals or teachings in NCEA Level 1-2 courses -running more

courses developed by professionals for Year 9-10 students to learn the basics behind Mental Health.

Understanding the importance of breathing, understanding the real psychological reasons behind the importance of sleep, learning the differences between Depression and

Anxiety and learning to identify and address possible triggers.

He says calling for better mental health education in schools is not about publicity the group just want to see what is desperately needed and that is support for youth where support is needed.

The water is being pumped out across a spillway into the Kaiwharawhara Stream to make removing the perch easier.

Staff have removed as many other species of fish as possible from the lower reservoir to move them out of harm’s way.

It’s expected the reservoir can start to fill up next month, with the help of some Wellington rain.

Raroa celebrates jubilee

After a shaky start with an unfinished school Raroa School welcomed its first class of form ones fifty years ago.

A gripping headline in a newspaper report of 1971 was the click-bate of today “ Grave doubts on half built school,” telling the story of a building firm going into liquidation and workmen walking off the job but later reports show the school did open on the second of February 1971, even though there were a number of buildings to be finished with a roll of 324 form one pupils.

The official opening was in 1972 on the 15th of August by prime minister of the time Mr John Marshall.

Raroa School Librarian Claire Forrest has teamed up with foundation pupil Stephen Mills to put together a celebration of the milestone.

Friday 11 June 2021, 1–4pm there will be an official powhiri and opening ceremony at 1pm at RƗroa Normal Intermediate, followed by refreshments. There will be the opportunity to visit classrooms to see how students are educated now, compared to when 5ƗURD Normal Intermediate began.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a burglary took place in Kipling Street.. The glass in the front door was smashed and also a bedroom window. Food was stolen from a cupboard and the fridge. In Corlett Street a Honda Stream had its rear registration plate stolen.

In Newlands a white Mazda Familia stationwagon was stolen from Kenmore Street. A burglary took place in Stewart Drive by climbing in the bathroom window which was secured by a piece of rope. Some medication was taken from a drawer in the bedroom. A gas stove was also taken.

In Khandallah a courier delivered a laptop computer to an address in Mandalay Terrace. No one answered the door and as the courier was about to leave with the parcel two people claiming to be owners of the house came up and signed the receipt and claimed the laptop. Unfortunately they were not the true owners of the property.

In Ngaio a white Subaru Forester stationwagon was stolen from Rothsay Road. The garage of a house in Cockayne Road was entered and a Trek mountain bike and helmet were stolen.

In Crofton Downs a vehicle was broken into while the owner went for a walk. The left rear quarterlight was smashed and a camera, sunglasses and a handbag were among the items stolen.

In Northland a black Suzuki Moped was stolen from Northland Road.

In Wadestown a red SF50 ADLY moped was broken into. It was parked in Sar Street overnight. The locked box was forced open and the helmet stolen. A silver Toyota Wish was parked on the road in Barnard Street while the owner was away for

Khandallah Park Flying Fox gets TLC

Forks plunged, secateurs snipped and weeds trembled as members of the Onslow Garden Club launched their attack on the overgrown area around the flying fox at Khandallah Park over the weekend.

Seeing the area needed a clean up, the club approached the WCC about weeding and planting the area to im-

prove the appearance and usability of this part of the Park.

Permission granted, club members gathered for a few hours of toil and chat and by the end of the morning the task was done.

The club will convene at the Park again in two weeks and plant the weeded ground and then keep a watchful eye on the area in the future.

There is a CCTV camera covering the car but nothing appears on the film. A silver Toyota Estima light

van parked in Chamberlain Road lost its rear registration plate. An attempted burglary took place in Baxter Way. Knife marks on window frame suggest the offenders were looking for a way in. No entry gained. A resident of Richmond Avenue arrived home to find the kitchen window wide open.

There are no signs of force on the frame. A silver necklace was stolen.

Bathroom louvres were removed to allow entry into a house in Hurman Street. A necklace, watch and ring are reported stolen but the list is not complete yet.

Khandallah Park’s flying fox area has been given a tidy up.

Karori Cemetery gravesites got a spruce up thanks to a hearty bunch of volunteers.

Volunteers restore graves at Karori Cemetery

It’s a sunny Saturday morning in Karori, and down at New Zealand’s largest cemetery there’s a line of people crouched over the gravestones.

There are bottles of cleaner, gardening tools, buckets, shovels and saws nearby.

They’re not there to mourn – they’re there to restore, lovingly scraping away dirt, mould and lichen, and cutting back overhanging trees from the graves of servicemen.

They’re also spraying each cleaned gravestone with Bio Shield to protect them from further weathering, and finally, they carefully stick on a ceramic poppy with sympathetic adhesive.

The workers are all volunteers, part of New Zealand’s fastest growing army – the New Zea-

land Remembrance Army.

There’s 4500 of them around the country already, a huge growth from their beginnings as a small group of friends in Porirua just a year ago.

Their mission is to restore and record graves belonging to those who served in the Armed Forces both here and overseas.

Gordon Tait is one of those volunteers, who was at Karori last Saturday to honour the memory of his father, James Francis Tait.

Gordon has spent a lot of times in cemeteries, helping his father place poppies on servicemen’s memorials.

Gordon says his father had lost 25 out of 37 boys in his seventh form class in World War Two. It made him sad to think that people were forgetting his friends, so he would also call hospitals to enquire about ex-servicemen.

“He didn’t let any old digger

die alone,” Tait says.

“He believed in service.”

Tait says families used to purchase land in the cemeteries for family plots. Often, this was the only piece of land the families would own.

“Think about how much love there is here.

“People paid a lot of money for these graves.”

Mum Amy Turner-Mudgewy and her children Luca and Fizzle also attended the session.

Turner-Mudgewy is ex-service, and restored war graves in the United Kingdom while she lived there.

“I have relatives who served in both wars.

“This is important.”

Another volunteer was Khandallah resident Toni Shanks.

“It’s a nice way to contribute to ANZAC Day,” Shanks says.

Gregory says many war graves in New Zealand are untended and forgotten. It is estimated there were over 350,000 war graves in total.

He says there is a lot to do at Karori. They have only covered half a hectare, and are finding new graves as they work.

Gregory says the poppies, while acknowledging the men’s service, also mark their place so they’re not lost.

“We have to identify them or else we’re going to lose them.

“It’s important to remember these people who shaped our history.

“It’s to make sure their history, their knowledge, and their service isn’t lost for future generations.”

Help put the kai into Kaibosh this May As proud supporters of Kaibosh Food Rescue, Wellington City Council is encouraging everyone to put the kai into Kaibosh for Give a Meal in May/Haratua Takoha Kai. Kaibosh provides food to soup kitchens, marae, foodbanks, residential facilities and other essential social service providers – and demand has grown since COVID-19.

Last year, the rebranded version of the annual Make a Meal in May fundraiser became Give a Meal in May / Haratua Takoha Kai to adapt to a COVID-19 environment, and Wellingtonians really made a difference, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“Wellington City Council has been a proud supporter of Kaibosh since it started in 2008, and now more than ever it needs our help – and the help of our community.

“There are many heroes protecting our more vulnerable members of the city, and Kaibosh and their volunteers are some of them, but they can’t do it on their own. Wellingtonians are well known for their generosity, so let’s live up to that reputation this May.” Kaibosh Food Rescue ensures good kai isn’t needlessly discarded, instead passing it on to charities doing the mahi to feed people in need.

“The impacts of the COVID-19 crisis have made it even harder for those struggling to make ends meet,” says Kaibosh General Manager Matt Dagger. “Responding to increased demand for food whilst navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis has meant we’ve had to quickly, and regularly, adapt to get food to those who need

it.”

In the 12 months from April 2020 to March 2021, Kaibosh has provided 465,289kgs of food (the equivalent of over 1.3 million meals) to more than 100 Wellington, Hutt Valley, KƗSiti & Horowhenua community groups who support those most in need.

“We can not do this alone,” says Matt. “This May we’re reaching out to the good people of Wellington and Aotearoa, requesting help to provide 100,000 meals for people in need. Together, we can make a real difference for our community and our environment.”

Hundreds of people gathered to wave the plane off from Dunedin airport.

Bernadine, now a resident at Enliven’s Huntleigh Home, was one of three air hostesses in attendance.

There were about 40 other passengers in the main cabin and the royals were ensconced behind a curtain in a specially refurbished section at the rear of the aircraft.

“I watched the three pilots make their way down one by one, then the other two air hostesses. Then it was my turn, being the youngest,” recalls Bernadine. “I was summoned by the aide who said, “The Queen will see you now.”

Bernadine nervously went down the aisle and behind the curtain.

“The royal couple were st a nd i ng when I ap proached,” she says. “The

Duke started the conversation. He was very friendly and encouraging, even though it felt like an interview of sorts.”

When the plane landed, and the royal couple disembarked down the stairs, Bernadine and the other NAC staff stood in attendance to shake their hands while dignitaries and reporters and hundreds of well-wishers looked on.

“The NAC staff were each presented with the signed royal photo, which was a lovely souvenir of

the flight,” says Bernadine.

And it’s not just the royals that Bernadine’s met on her travels. In her room at Huntleigh Home she also has photos of her shaking hands with Bill Clinton and Sir John Key. Jessica takes centre stage Jessica Hammond’s political campaigning is taking a back seat while her passion for theatre takes centre stage in Khandallah Arts Theatre’s upcoming production of four short but engaging works called Potpourri of Plays.

Jessica has twice stood for The Opportunities Party in the Ohariu electorate, coming third out of ten candidates at the 2020 election.

Now that the theatre of the campaign trail is over, she is enjoying playing a New York society lady called Margaret taking tea with her husband’s ex-girlfriend, Harriet, who rejected his marriage proposal when he was a young, struggling artist.

Complicating a seemingly light-hearted conversation is both women’s agendas for the outcome of this social engagement and the on-stage presence of their impatient, emotional and persistent inner selves, Maggie and Hetty, who steer their dialogue.

Written by Alice Gerstenberg in 1915, Overtones was one of the first plays to show characters’ subconscious thoughts on stage.

“Each time I read the script, I notice more and more clever things, like when I say my husband charges $4,000 for a portrait and then say he might do it for

The Northern Chorale’s first concert for 2021 at the Khandallah Town Hall on May 16 will be the end of an era.

The concert will be the farewell concert of the group’s much-loved Musical Director, Monika Smith.

After 10 years of directing, coaxing, arranging concerts and choral stints for Kenepuru Hospital and a number of retirement homes, Monika is retiring.

“The time is right for me but we have one more concert and it’s going to be a fun and interactive one.

“The 10 years feels like it has gone by in a flash,” she says.

“I came on board after having

my arm twisted by a friend and here we are.

“I’ve loved the people and being able to sing each week, that’s what has kept me here and I will miss it.”

The concert called Once Upon a Childhood.

The music will be for and about children.

It includes lullabies, fun songs, nursery rhymes with great arrangements, the enjoyment (and problems) of kids shopping for lollies, attempts to teach children manners and the many ways parents have invented to settle children to sleep.

There will also be games for children (and grown-ups who are game!) Such as Pin the Tail on the Donkey.

Historical portrait gets new life After hanging for nearly 100 years in the Kelburn Municipal Croquet Club’s historic pavilion, a large 1920s photographic portrait of the club’s founding president, Mrs Lily McVilly, has been professionally restored and will be lodged with the Alexander Turnbull Library.

But Mrs McVilly has not left the building. A digital copy commemorates the forceful woman who battled Wellington City Council for some years from around 1909 for a suitable location in Kelburn to play croquet.

The Club’s centennial history tells how “a deputation of Kelburn ladies” led by Mrs McVilly pursued the Council until finally winning the right, in 1913, to “practise croquet at Kelburn Park on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between 1.00

and 4.00 pm”.

However there were ongoing complaints about the state of the lawns for croquet. Worse, players were too close to the cricket grounds and croquet players occasionally sustained injuries from cricket balls, sometimes ending up in hospital.

By the early 1920’s, persistence had led to the eventual establishment of the current club on Salamanca Road, with five playing lawns.

Mrs McVilly was also the foundation vice-president of the Wellington Croquet Association, in 1919, and a leading light in the Wellington Women’s Club.

She presented the photographic portrait of herself to the Kelburn Croquet Club in 1924, where it hung until it began showing signs of deterioration.

Kelburn Croquet Club members determined to forestall any further deterioration and to preserve the historical significance embedded in the portrait by well-known early Wellington photographer Stanley Polkinghorne Andrews. The club commissioned Wellington conservator Diana Coop to copy, restore and preserve the original print for archiving by the Alexander Turnbull Library.

A commemorative ‘afternoon tea for Mrs McV’ was held at Kelburn Croquet last week, where the effort to get the portrait restored and archived was outlined by project leader Lisa Thompson, followed by conservator Diane Coop describing the restoration process, and the club’s honorary archivist Deirdre Wogan, who brought the club’s early history to life.

Johnsonville Classic tournament draws big names The annual Johnsonville Classic Invitational triples tournament was played over the weekend, with sixteen triples teams competing.

Always popular, the event attracted top bowlers from around the country.

The field included eight New Zealand title holders, including three New Zealand representatives, Maurice Symes,

Jim Scott, and Seamus Curtin.

Maurice travelled from the Blenheim Bowling Club, and Jim from Dunedin’s North East Valley.

Both are previous prominent members at Johnsonville, with Jim being a past president.

Other teams travelled from Nelson, Motueka and Raumati, the latter includ-

ing sports broadcaster, John McBeth.

The event consisted of nine games over the two days, with each member of a team playing singles and in each position in triples and pairs.

The winners, after two days full of competition, was a composite team from Marlborough Andre Smith, Chris Cherry and Johnny Hope.

Samuel Marsden Collegiate netball player Rachel Price has been named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ team.

The Emerging Talent Selection Panel, along with head coach Te Aroha Keenan and assistant coach Pelesa Semu have confirmed the 2021 New Zealand Secondary Schools squad.

The squad has been selected from the 85 players who attended three National Development Camps in January as well as the Zone feed forward process.

Viewing opportunities for players going forward will include the National Netball League, U18 Championships and various other regional secondary school tournaments.

Samuel Marsden Collegiate’s Rachel Price has made the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ netball team.

Pest plant ID system use urged Greater Wellington is urging the community to make good use of its free pest plant identification services this autumn by contacting the regional council if they spot a potential pest plant in their midst.

Under the Regional Pest Management Plan (RPMP), Greater Wellington hones in on a hit-list of pest plants dangerous to our region’s environment and primary industries. Greater Wellington will control the plants identified as pest under the RPMP at no cost to landowners. Plants not declared as pests in the RPMP, like pampas grass, are only controlled by the council in critically valuable areas but Greater Wellington will provide

free identification and advice on how to control these pests.

Among the worst offenders listed in the RPMP are Nassella tussock, Chilean Needle grass, and Alligator weed. These three species do not currently exist in our region, but would cause massive damage if they were to take hold. Greater Wellington has zero tolerance approach to these species and will identify and remove them free of charge.

The council is also asking people to keep an eye out for a group of pest plants that have already made their way into our region, and are especially easy to spot throughout autumn. These are Senegal tea, climbing spindleberry, velvetleaf

and moth plant.

Penny Gaylor, Chair of Greater Wellington’s Environment Committee, says this work is critical because pest plants have the potential to devastate our region’s ecosystem and economy.

“Pest plants threaten our native ecosystem and they threaten our agriculture. They can smother native plants, and quickly destroy precious waterways. They can be just as devastating as pest animals, so it’s really important that we as a community understand what to look for and what to do if we spot these plants.

“The best way to do this is to become familiar with the worst

culprits, and get in contact with Greater Wellington if you think you’ve spotted one of these.”

This message is particularly important for people working on agricultural land, because pest plants can be moved between farms on vehicles and equipment. If they take hold, they can reduce available grazing land and productivity, and make livestock sick. Farmers and people who work outside should be extra vigilant and urgently call Greater Wellington for free advice and plant identification.

Cr Gaylor stresses that keeping these pesky plants out of our region is a job for the whole community, but luckily it’s a case of many hands

making light work.

“Our dedicated biosecurity team is always monitoring for invasive species, but we can’t be everywhere at once. That’s why we rely on the community to let us know if they’ve noticed something suspicious, at which point we’ll swoop in to help identify potential pests and provide advice on how to control them for free. If the pest is identified in the RPMP, we’ll also eradicate it at no charge.

“I want to make it really clear that people shouldn’t hesitate to contact us for advice if they spot something that shouldn’t be there – it won’t cost anything, and there’s too much at stake if they don’t,” says Cr Gaylor.

Silver Lake a silver lining?

This Silver Lake deal is getting as messy as a captain’s challenge during a Super Rugby game.

The players continue to hold things up and potentially with good reason.

I thought by now, I’d sit clearly on one side of the fence on this issue but it turns out I’m still riding the picket fence.

NZ Rugby wants to secure a deal worth $387.5 million with the US investment behemoth because it needs money and Silver Lake could,

potentially, enable it to rake in some much-needed cash.

At the annual meeting in Wellington on Thursday, NZ Rugby announced a $34 million loss for 2020. This followed a loss of $7.4 million the previous year.

The players want their slice of the pie as the lone money earners for NZ Rugby.

NZ Rugby has admitted through Chairman Brent Impey that they need the cash injection to fund the

grassroots of the game.

Impey has stated the current way of doing things is broken.

NZ Rugby needs the money, so he says, to prop up the provincial unions who all agreed to accept the deal, to prop up the club game which is run on the smell of an oily rag.

Impey says they need the money to invest in Maori and Pasifika rugby, in women’s rugby which all seem like fair points.

The players through their spokes-

man Rob Nichol want to be more thorough and believe that selling off 12.5 per cent of the brand forever another fair point.

The cynic in me just thinks the current crop of top players want their slice of the pie while I wonder if NZ rugby can look at themselves and wonder why the game is struggling financially, why are poor crowds so common to Super Rugby games and provincial contests so common?

The finger-pointing won’t resolve

the issue and that is that the grassroots level of the game badly needs funding.

While the professional players have a fair point, they are all products of that grassroots system.

Without it, there is no All Black jersey or juicy overseas contracts as their careers hit their twilight years.

If Silver Lake is the best deal going, then it may be just a matter of time before it is accepted - like it or not.

Johnsonville outlast Avalon for key win

Johnsonville is just two points outside the top four of the Swindale Shield after a 41-29 win over Avalon at Helston Park on Saturday.

Hawks halfback Mark Sutton managed 21 points including five penalties and three conversions.

Johnsonville captain Andrew Ellis moved from full back to second-fiveeighth for the contest and managed two tries.

Johnsonville did concede an early try which continued a trend of slow starts for the Hawks.

Johnsonville prop Mike Faimalo scored his first premier try to even the scores.

Sutton then kicked two penalties before Ellis crossed for his first try after a strong run from Bodene Davis.

The 18-7 advantage was soon cut to four points before the boot of Sutton and Ellis’

second try helped the hosts to a 28-17 halftime advantage.

Two more penalties and a try to wing Knox Tuinasau looked to open the floodgates at 41-17 but Avalon scored two late tries after Johnsonville had two men in the sin bin in the latter stages.

Johnsonville coach Jason Adamson was happy with the outcome but admitted the late tries conceded and slow start was frustrating.

“That was a game we needed to win and we have done that.

“We do a lot of hard work and then an error let’s us down.

“I’d hope the tight five would have had a more dominant performance but Avalon played very direct and put us under pressure.

Johnsonville will host Petone on Saturday.

Petone currently sit fourth in the competition.

North Wellington ease past Wainuiomata

Time does indeed fly fast and round 6 of 18 in the Men’s Central Football League is done and dusted already.

There were no outright surprises last weekend but the margins in some results were not all as expected. There is still an active transfer market and clubs continue to recruit players in a bid to finish in the top 3 sides and move through to the National League towards the end of the year.

North Wellington FC headed over to Richard Prouse Park on a fine and sunny Saturday afternoon to face newly promoted Wainuiomata who have yet to register any points for the year. And that’s the way it would stay too in what was an ugly 2-1 win for Norths who were grateful to escape with their reputation intact. It was a match that should have delivered so much more for the visitors and the jury is still out about whether Wainui played out of their skins or Norths failed to ram home their dominance in territorial advantage. To be fair, it was a little bit of both. Wainui were hard to break down and more often than not,

had all 11 players behind the ball.

Try as they might, Norths had great difficulty breaching the mountain of men, to the delight of the local and loud fan base.

It was an even opening 10 minutes and the track was hard and fast.

Norths then began to dominate and it took just five more minutes for the recently returned Jesse Randall to get Norths on the board when he weaved inside and out his opposite marker on the edge of the Wainui box and slotted a well angled shot across the area and into the back of the net. Unfortunately for Norths the much anticipated onslaught never really happened despite Wainui conceding about a million defensive corners and Norths having a thousand shots which were denied by the wall of green and black shirts in front of them.

The unthinkable happened early in the second half when Wainui equalised through Ben Stroud to score the club’s fifth goal for the season. The frustration clearly mounted for Norths who consistently failed to break the Wainui defensive blockade. Anxiety levels for the visitors eventually subsided on the 80 minute mark with Noah

Tipene-Clegg’s half volley smash to score the winner, proving that the direct route can still pay dividends when it matters.

In other matches in the round, Miramar Rangers kept the score board attendant busy at David Farrington Park by putting eight goals between the sticks to Wairarapa United’s one.

Waterside Karori’s early 2-0 advantage over Wellington Olympic was not to last with Olympic eventually bringing home the bacon for a 4-2 win. Lower Hutt had it easier than they would have predicted with a 3-0 win at home over Napier City Rovers and Western Suburbs worked harder than they might have thought for a 2-0 win over Petone. Miramar and Wellington Olympic remain at the sharp end of the competition on 16 points while Wainuiomata props up the other end, followed by Petone on three points.

In the Men’s Premier League, North Wellington was not unhappy with a 2-2 draw against Tawa and in the Women’s Premier League, the Innkeeper North Wellington side also shared the points playing away to Victoria University for a 1-1 stalemate.
