Although the numbers are good there are still just under 30 percent of Maori fully vaccinated.

A44 Games in Lower Hutt sold By: Gerald Rillstone Hutt based gaming studio A44 Games has been sold to a global collective of game developers headed by a former Xbox executive.

The USD$120m financial backing of the new owner will mean the company can work on much larger projects – should be a good boost to the local industry.

Wellingtonian Derek Bradley worked at Weta Digital before starting A44 Games.

According to the latest figures, New Zealand’s video game industry is projected to reach $1bn in exports by 2025.

The deal has seen Kepler Interactive, the world’s first studio group co-owned and run by developers.

With Kepler Interactive backed by an initial US$120m financing round, A44 will become one of seven founding members in the new international studio collective, joining Alpha Channel,

Awaceb, Ebb Software, Shapefarm, Sloclap, and Timberline.

A44 Games is an independent games studio best known for creating Ashen, a top rated Xbox One and PS4 open world action RPG title which has netted over USD$15m in revenue worldwide.

The eight-year-old studio will remain in New Zealand and, in a boost to local employment, will create an additional 40 roles - bringing its total staff numbers to over 100.

Kepler Interactive operates under a unique model whereby game studio founders become co-owners, combining the benefits of full creative independence with resources and operational support that would otherwise only be accessible through full acquisitions.

Pink Ribbon volunteers Breast Cancer Foundation NZ is urgently seeking people in the Wellington region to volunteer for its Pink Ribbon Street Appeal this October.

Around 10,000 Pink Ribbon volunteers across the country will take to the streets on 29 and 30 October to collect donations for breast cancer research, education and patient support. But the appeal may be at risk of cancellation unless volunteer area coordinators are found there to oversee local collection sites.

Area coordinators manage a small team of collectors and are supplied with all materials required to look after their local sites.

Dear Editor, I appreciate the work being generated for local Wainuiomata builders and contractors, the allocation of new houses below market value also seems fantastic, but it would be disingenuous of all involved to deny there isn’t the smug reassurance of a tidy profit being made.

Wainui has become one gigantic building site, developers buying the 1/4-acre sections from locals, then

demolishing the family home and building 3, 4 or more! and selling them for a minimum $850,000 each.

Spouting the altruistic cry of providing homes for the desperate, fools no-one.

The fact remains that Wainuiomata doesn’t have the infrastructure for the additional burden of sewage and water requirements, coupled with the lack of parking, the lack of green space, the proximity of Neighbours

(so close you could reach out your window and shake their hand) and the fact that in 10 years’ time some of these developments will resemble slums.

The reality is the only people really benefitting from this housing boom are the developers, the real estate agents and the council.

Popular PM promotes vaccinations By: Gerald Rillstone Prime minister Jacinda Ardern attended a low key visit to the Wainuiomata Marae vaccination centre to thank organisers and meet with rangatahi who were there for their first jab.

With the push on to get as many of the population vaccinated as possible the prime minister wanted to have a first hand look at the hard work and sacrifices made at the Marae and meet the people on the ground making it happen.

inbrief news Wellington pinkest city Wellington will be New Zealand’s pinkest city this October, with six landmarks and prominent buildings lighting up in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the first time the Majestic Centre will be awash in pink, and it will be joined by the Wellington Cable Car, Kelburn Park Fountain, Woman of Words, Hikitia Floating Crane and Bascule Bridge. Upper Hutt’s Fantail Sculpture is also taking part.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for Kiwi women, with around 360 women diagnosed in the Greater Wellington Region area every year.

Ball gowns needed By: Gerald Rillstone Koikiri Marae’s Pataka shop have gathered a range of ball gowns for hire and are calling for more gowns to be donated.

With up and coming school balls in the region and the cost of gowns being high the Pataka’s Darcelle Jansen has put together

a range of stunning dresses in the revamped shop.

To keep the cost of school balls down Darcelle says the hireage is only $5.

A $20 deposit will be needed when they pick up the gown with the proviso of the gowns being dry-cleaned before they are returned and they will get $15 back.

“We have had people bring the gowns but the more we can have on offer the better because it costs a fortune to buy them and I know that because I have got eight granddaughters,” Darcelle says.

“Anyone that can bring their gowns down for the kids to use would be appreciated .”

Also added recently to the Pata-

ka shop are a range of premature baby clothes hand knitted by volunteers.

“We have a lady volunteer who has knitted and knitted premature baby’s clothes which is amazing.

We have kept some and some of them were taken up to the hospital

What’s Cooking... Stop by the Pink Caravan in Chicken Mee Goreng Ingredients: s s s s s s s s s s s s s s s

150g dried egg noodles 2 tbs sriracha Juice of 1 lime 1/3 cup (80ml) kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce) 2 tbs light soy sauce 1 tbs sunflower oil 200g chicken thigh fillets, cut into 2cm pieces 1 garlic clove, chopped 2 eggs, lightly beaten 4 spring onions, thinly sliced, plus extra to serve 200g pak choy, thinly sliced 100g bean sprouts Crispy fried onions, to serve Sambal chilli jam (from Asian food shops – optional) Thinly sliced red chilli, to serve

1. Cook the noodles according to packet instructions, then drain and rinse under cold water. Set aside.

2. Combine sriracha, lime juice, kecap manis and soy in a bowl and set aside.

3. Heat oil in a wok over medium heat. Cook chicken, stirring occasionally, for 6-7 minutes or until cooked through. Add garlic, toss to combine, then transfer to a heatproof bowl and set aside.

4. Wipe wok clean, then return to high heat. Add eggs and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until just cooked through. Add spring onion, pak choy, cooked noodles and chicken, and sriracha mixture. Cook, tossing, for 2 minutes or until heated through and all ingredients are coated in the sauce. Stir through bean sprouts and divide between serving bowls.

5. Top with fried onions, sambal, if using, chilli and extra spring onion, and serve immediately.

“Every year Pinkie goes on an education tour around New Zealand with our specialist breast nurses, and we’re thrilled to be visiting the Hutt Valley this October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a great chance to talk about mammograms, get advice about checking your breasts, and learn how you can reduce your breast cancer risk,” Emilie Petitdemange, Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s Pink Caravan

Coordinator says.

“One of Pinkie’s star attractions is Bessie, a life-like torso which shows the visible signs of breast cancer. Many women are often surprised to learn what a lump actually feels like, so we urge everyone to come along and find out for themselves.”

Around 105 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the Hutt Valley DHB area every year, and around 20 will die from it.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for New Zealand women but research shows the earlier it is detected, the better the outcome. Breast Cancer Foundation NZ encourages women to be breast aware from the age of 20 and to consider starting mammograms at 40.

Breast nurses are trained professionals who can give expert advice about symptoms, treatments, support groups and post-surgery options. Anyone who can’t visit Pinkie in person is welcome to call our free nurse advice line on 0800 BC NURSE (0800 226 8773),” Emilie added.

Pinkie has been adapted to be Covid-safe, meeting social distancing and hygiene requirements, with face masks and disposable gloves available to visitors.

Plant immunity: By Wally Richards Plants, just like ourselves, have built in protection against diseases though their immunity systems.

We build up our immunity naturally over the years by surviving disease attacks and by having a healthy nutritionally rich diet.

We, like plants, have pathogens and viruses in our bodies all the time but these are kept in check by our immune system and glands.

I have written a lot in the past on how to build the health of plants by building the health of the soil.

Having soil that is rich in humus, minerals, earth worms and soil life.

Even when we have the best soil on earth, plants can still catch a cold when they are placed into stress.

We can however increase the immune systems of plants by monthly sprays of Perkfection Supa for roses and other plants.

The active ingredient of Perkfection is ‘Phosphite ion’ or Phosphonic Acid. (Potassium ions are also present).

Perkfection is very safe to handle and spray and when used on food crops there is no withholding period other than your normal washing of produce before eating.

Perkfection is used extensively by commercial growers of vegetables DQG IUXLW DV LWV VDIH H൵ HFWLYH LQ prevention and control while not restrictive on exports of produce.

We have suggested Perkfection Supa for Roses and Other Plants as an alternative to more toxic sprays, for the assistance in recovery from/ or prevention of, the following problems, Black spot, Downy Mildew,

Phytophthora Root rot, botrytis, Canker, heart rot, damping off, crown rot, leaf blight, silver leaf, late blight, collar rot, pink rot, brown rot, Armillaria, and gummy stem rot.

Besides using Perkfection over your roses for the likes of Black spot and Downy mildew you can also use it as a spray over all your fruiting plants and trees including your strawberries.

It can be used also over your potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, beans, cubits (cucumbers etc) lawns, onLRQV SDVVLRQ IUXLW &DXOLÀ RZHUV cybidium orchids and ornamental plants and vines.. In fact there is no where you cannot use Perkfection to advantage.

Being ‘Synthetic Organic Phosphates’ what you are doing, is placing this valuable material, onto the foliage of your plants, where it is very readily absorbed and transferred through the whole of the plant.

This fortifies the plant’s cells, increases the plant’s immune system and makes your plants less susceptible to invading pathogens.

There is however a down side, as with any good thing, you can use too much and the recommendation is to use Perkfection at 4 ml per litre of spray once a month for about 6 times in a season.

The reason is that, you can over load your plant with organic phosphates causing a clogging of the cells and halting growth until the system clears.

For plants you wish to fortify use at 4ml per litre for 2 to 3 months.

Prevention is better than cure and by spraying your plants in the spring you give the greatest protection to leaves and fruit, autumn spray will give greatest protection to roots and tubers.

I have suggested that on the 1st of the month to spray your roses and other preferred plants with Perkfection, MBL (Magic Botanic Liquid) and Mycorrcin. Then 14 days later (15th) spray with Mycorrcin and MBL. What we are doing is boosting the plant’s immune system, supplying a large range of minerals and elements, feeding the beneficial microbes to increase their populations which also work to eliminate diseases.

If insects problems occur then include Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil with Wallys Super Pyrethrum added. All these sprays are compatible.

Wet weather diseases on citrus and plants that do not like wet feet can be helped to recover with the use of Perkfection.

It will help stimulate new root development.

It would also be a good idea to clean up the rot in the roots with a soil drench of Terracin followed by a drench of Mycorrcin 3 weeks later.

NRL final delivers on pre-match hype The NRL grand final was a fitting end to a terrific season.

Penrith outlasted South Sydney 14-12 in an absorbingly physical contest which earned the men from the Blue Mountains their third title and first since 2003.

While not a free-flowing exhibition of league, it was a far superior product to either Rugby Championship encounter just 24 hours earlier.

Rugby league may be the blue collar sport but there is little argument that it produces the most

consistently entertaining on-field product between both codes.

South Sydney did not get the bounce of the ball during the final.

It felt like all the 50-50 plays and calls went against them.

Yet for a team which conceded 50 points twice during the campaign, their defence was heroic at times.

Penrith had lost their attacking flair late in the season, potentially due to injuries to key players late in the regular season.

teams, their defence held firm at the key times and proved the catalyst for their grand final triumph.

In their final 160 minutes of 2021, Ivan Cleary’s men conceded just 18 points in the most pressurepacked encounters of the season.

Even with a misfiring attack, they were able to go one better than their efforts from 12 months prior.

Special mention must go to Wayne Bennett.

The super-coach lost just his third final in nine trips to the

decider since 1987.

At times, the Rabbitohs looked completely hopeless during 2021 but Bennett built them into deserving finalists by the end of the campaign.

Their scintillating attack was never doubted but it was the late season steel in defence which transformed them into title contenders.

Bennett’s plans for next year are uncertain and at the age of 71 he has nothing to prove but he is

bound to be in demand.

Bennett is the ultimate puppeteer in the sense he knows how to get the best out of each of his players regardless of experience level or talent factor.

It’s also a timely reminder than Ivan Cleary coached the New Zealand Warriors to a grand final in 2011 and was then promptly sacked from the club.

I am sure that leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of some Kiwi league fans.

A perfect ending

By Imray Ryan If there is such a thing as the perfect ending to a difficult season then this was certainly it.

Our Reserves team were chasing promotion and they needed a win away to Western Suburbs and Greymouth to do them a favour by beating Petone. With Wainui playing first, they did what they needed to by winning 5-2 thanks to doubles from Cam Blake, Adam Ross and a goal to Joel Evans.

Now it was an anxious wait for the other result and the football gods were on our side

as word came through that Greymouth convincingly beat Petone. The Reserves finished second on the table and start getting ready for life in Capital 3 for 2022.

The final game of the 2021 season saw the first team away at a windy Alex Moore to face North Wellington. Winless all season, the lads were hoping to end on a high and they started off perfectly. Five minutes into the game, Fraser Brown latched on to a Michael Fraser cross to put Wainui ahead and that was how the score stayed going into

the break. North Wellington came out in the second half and ten minutes in they found an equaliser, but the Wainui heads never dropped and after some exceptional defensive work, they got their reward.

Fraser Brown was bought down in the box and converted the penalty to get his and Wainui’s second in the 71st minute. It was end to end after that and in the 86th minute, a goal-line clearance from Zander Rushworth gave some hope that it was going to be our day. It was 4 minutes later that the icing was put on the cake when Adam Ross who was called up last min-

ute to cover injuries and was only on the pitch for 10 minutes, scored from just inside the box. The goal caused wild celebrations amongst the players, sent the travelling supporters into ecstasy and some of the North Wellington fans home early. The locals far and wide would have heard the noise from the Wainui faithful as the referee blew the final whistle to confirm their first win of the season.

A difficult season ended in the greatest way possible and those that have been on the rollercoaster ride from the start, would

say that the lads deserved it for all of their efforts and for never giving up…..and I don’t think anyone would disagree with that.
