Continued from page 1 Manager Homelessness Prevention Services Lynda Ryan has been gathering as much information from government agencies in a bid to get the right answers out to the community but is finding the way it is presented is not in a language all would understand.

“What I have found is there is too much information and it is high level and clinical,” Lynda says.

“People have had really commonsense questions that we need commonsense answers for and some of them were how long

will it last and there is no answer to that.”

There have also been people asking what effect it will have on people with comorbidity and people with cancer and getting chemo therapy and how effective is the first jab and what happens with the second jab.

“There is different information about different jabs and all the answers were around the strategy and policy at a higher population level rather than an intimate, on the ground level,” she says.

“It is a bit like when COVID first came out and the govern-

ment communications team haven’t got the message out in the right way in the right language.”

Feed back from the community Lynda has found has shown that if the government would engage community providers with the information the message would have got across in a way people would understand.

For some cultures there were also different questions as to whether the vaccine was live or dead and if it was live what does that look like.

There are also some environmental questions around the

needles.

Lynda says if there are ten million vaccinations there will be that number in needles and what is going to happen to them.

Social media platforms are also having an impact on the information getting out to the community and the wrong information is getting out to the community better than the governments message.

“If we had dedicated coms giving us the information in simple language to get out to the community and then we could take it out to the community,” Lynda says.

Greater Wellington consulting looking for feedback on plans Greater Wellington Regional Council has just released its 20212031 Long Term Plan for public consultation from 2 April, and it’s looking for strong and active feedback from the public.

“People need to engage with the plan and help shape the region’s progress over the next decade,” Greater Wellington Chair, Daran Ponter says.

Standing head and shoulders over most of the issues facing the region, and a core issue confronted by the plan, is the looming threat of climate change.

The favoured proposal is that all existing and additional buses (bar a few for emergencies) be replaced with, or converted to, battery

electric power when contracts with bus service providers are renewed in 2027 and 2030.

A move to all-electric trains in Wairarapa and Manawatu over the next decade is also on the table at a cost of around $1.1 billion over 10 years.

Another area where greater Wellington we can make a big difference is grazing in its regional parks, which has been a traditional activity in places such as Queen Elizabeth Park and Battle Hill.

The solution favoured in the plan is to phase out grazing from 1,350 hectares of the 2,083 hectares of grazed parkland through reforestation and restoration of

the land.

The plan’s budget is significant.

Between now and 2031 Greater Wellington will invest around $1.5 billion. Inevitably, this will have to be funded by rates, but rises have been kept as low as possible.

Key items of expenditure include: rail station infrastructure and upgrades; continued investment in Let’s Get Wellington Moving; development of integrates fares and ticketing solution; RiverLink flood protection; delivery of other major flood protection hazard and management programmes; installation and provision of regional-scale environment and climate monitoring sites; renewal and upgrade of critical drinking

water abstraction, treatment and supply network assets; Te Marua Water Treatment Plant Capacity Optimisation; relocation of the Kaitoke water main on Silverstream bridge.

The outcome for regional rates in the first year is a rise on average $65 a year (incl. GST) for residential ratepayers, and $248.56 (excl.

GST) for the business ratepayer and an increase of $82.16 a year (excl. GST) for the rural ratepayer region-wide.

Allowing ‘legal limits’ for people to drive under the influence of illegal drugs is ‘bone-deep stupid’, says Darroch Ball co-leader of Sensible Sentencing Trust.

“It’s quite unbelievable for the government to accept any sort of level of dangerous illegal drugs in someone’s system while they are driving.”

“How can the government be so cavalier as to signal to all in sundry that there is now a certain acceptable limit with which one can not only take illegal drugs, but they can then get in a vehicle and drive.”

“The only responsible thing to do would be to have a zero-tolerance for illegal drug-driving. Simple.”

“These drugs are dangerous and untested. Why the government would let people drive with any illegal drug in their system is beyond belief,” says Mr Ball.

“The only way this new piece of legislation should pass is with the introduction of a ‘no-limit’ standard for drug driving.”

Council ten year plan The flu. Don’t get it.

There’s a nip in the air for sure lately. Which means now is the time to think about getting a flu shot.

Clive reckons that almost everyone can benefit from the protection of an annual flu shot. Getting the flu is a major threat as it can spread quickly through the community.

Not matter how fit, healthy, or tough you are, you’re not immune to the flu. It can strike at any time and will leave you unable to do just about anything. The flu can make you seriously ill and keep you in bed for at least a week.

This is particularly true if you are elderly or have an ongoing medical condition.

However, even if you don’t feel sick, you could still have the virus and pass it on to others.

A common misunderstanding is that the flu vaccine can give you the flu. This is not true. The flu shot is made up of dead flu viruses, so you can’t catch the flu from them. What happens is that after your shot, your body learns

what the flu looks like, so if you are exposed to the virus your body can fight it off.

Ideally, you should be vaccinated before May. Clive’s Chemist will have the flu shot available from UI April. Getting immunised is your best protection.

Hutt City Council hasd agreed on the proposed 10 year plan which will be released for consultation this week.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says that at its core, the proposed ten year plan is about getting the basics right for the people of Lower Hutt.

The plan is aptly titled E whakatika ana i nga mea matua - Getting the basics right.

Mayor Barry says the proposed 10 year plan also includes provision to deliver on key Council commitments, including important community infrastructure like Naenae Pool.

“We have committed to rebuilding Naenae Pool, and our proposed plan asks residents to endorse a proposed investment of up to $68 million to get the job done. We are fortunate to be able to ease the burden on ratepayers, with $27 million of that funding com-

ing directly from central government.

Council is making sure that borrowing levels are sustainable during this period, and ensuring rating levels are fair for our ratepayers. Council is therefore proposing a 5.9 per cent rates revenue increase for 2021-2022.

This is an increase of $2.50 per week in 2021/22 for the average residential household.

“We know times are uncertain due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19.

This is why affordability is front of mind, and why we have made significant internal savings of $5.2 million, per year, before proposing this increase in rates.”

“However, now is not the time to wind down investment and run the risk that our infrastructure will reach a crisis point and fail.”

Consultation on the proposed 10

year plan will open on Tuesday 6 April and run through until Thursday 6 May. Mayor Barry says the proposed 10 year plan is subject to consultation with the community, and encourages every Lower Hutt resident to have their say.

Hutt City Council’s ten Year Plan includes six priorities. These include proposals for investment options. The six priorities are: 1. Investing in infrastructure 2. Increasing housing supply 3. Caring for and protecting our environment 4. Supporting an innovative, agile economy and attractive city 5. Connecting communities 6. Connecting rangatahi with Parliament Entries are now open for the Change Makers’ Prize, a new competition to inspire rangatahi across New Zealand to voice their opinion on an issue that affects them, their community, or all of Aotearoa.

Offered by the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives and Parliamentary Service, the competition aims to get young people thinking and talking about issues they’re passionate about, enhancing their understanding of Parliament and the change they can create now, and in the future, as engaged citizens.

“This is an exciting opportunity for young Kiwis from across Aotearoa to practise speaking up on issues

they’re passionate about, which is a behaviour we want to encourage from an early age” says David Wilson, Clerk of the House of Representatives.

The competition asks students to imagine they are giving a speech to Parliament and to submit a short video of that speech in which they express their opinion on their chosen issue and the action they think Parliament could take to address it.

“We know there are plenty of inspiring future change makers out there and we’re really looking forward to hearing great ideas from a diverse range of voices,” says Rafael Gonzalez-Montero, Chief Executive

of the Parliamentary Service.

Entries will be accepted in any language and can be made as individuals or as school groups, with prizes awarded for each category. Winners in each category will be rewarded with a fully-funded individual or class trip to Wellington to enjoy a behind-the-scenes parliamentary experience in person!

Metlink announces winners for competition Bill, 8, from Wellington and Ellie, 11, from Kapiti were today announced as the winners of Metlink’s ‘Design a bus’ colouring contest, meaning their designs will be turned into two Metlink buses hitting Wellington’s streets next month.

These talented tamariki were chosen out of 15 finalists and hundreds of entries for the popular contest which Metlink ran last month as part of the Brendan Foot Supersite Round the Bays activities.

Bill is especially excited to board his bus to the beach.

“I love swimming in the sea and often go to Island Bay with my friends, so it would be fun to get on my bus to go swimming.

But what I am most looking forward to little children being able to go on my bus and choose

where they sit by pointing at the different fish,” he says.

Bill’s love of the sea inspired his fantastical underwater design. After attending Family Snorkel Day at Taputeranga Marine Reserve, a Greater Wellington summer event co-run with Mountains to Sea Wellington, Bill wanted to share life under the sea with everyone.

Ellie, 11, from Kapiti took her inspiration from the many wonderful things that a visit to our capital city offers. From the Nga Kina waterfront sculptures, to our iconic beehive Parliament building, the famous windy ‘Wellington’ sign, and even a glimpse of ‘Matariki’ whale who visited Wellington’s harbour, it’s all there on display amongst a spectacular backdrop of reds, pinks and purples.

“My design has a sunset in the background to make it look brighter and more colourful. I think the best part of seeing my bus in real-life will be seeing my own colourful sunset driving around.”

All 15 finalists will be turned into posters that will brighten up bus shelters across Wellington region starting 12 April.

The pair are volunteers at Pataka in Wise Street and have been asking the public to knit or crochet ‘peggy squares’ that are sewn together to make the blankets.

‘We’ve been so pleased with the response, we’ve had so many donated, that are in all shapes and sizes’ said Deb McIvor.

‘There has been so many come in and our job is to collect the peggy squares and shape them in to a blanket. We have had some amazing work come in’ says Rose Martin.

inbrief news Retirement village residents have spoken More than 3000 resident submissions were received by the CFFC from seniors in retirement villages.

1900 of those submissions came in writing to the Retirement Village Residents Assoc. of NZ (RVRANZ), which aided their own submission. National President, Peter Carr describes the response as a clear indication to the government on the need for a full review.

According to the RVRANZ’s own 7000 strong membership spread throughout 300 villages in New Zealand - 2/3’s of residents in villages are single with 3/4’s of them being female (usually widows) with an average age of 81.

While a number of operators had lifted the industry’s game by stopping fees on exit, guaranteed return of funds to a resident or sharing capital gain were not up for discussion with operators The RVRANZ has called for some interim relief by seeking amendments to the Retirement Villages Code of Practice. This would allow for a number of the loopholes to be closed while a full review was undertaken.

The result comes as part of Recipes.co.nz a Dinner Debate Survey which polled 1900 Kiwis on their mealtime preferences.

Parkrun Phenomenon Parkrun is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing sports events. It is a free, timed, 5Km FUN RUN OR WALK WHICH TAKES place along the Hutt River every Saturday morning. The parkrun story started with just 13 runners in 2004 in London, UK and has become an international phenomenon with over 1,200 events in 22 countries around the world.

The Lower Hutt event was New Zealand’s first parkrun, first held in 2012. There are now 38 events across New Zealand including two in the Hutt Valley – Lower Hutt and Trentham Memorial Park. The course follows the Hutt River path starting near the Ewen Bridge, up to the Waione St bridge and back. Lower Hutt’s largest field is 327 and averages 150 participants every week.

Lower Hutt parkrun has been well supported by Wainuiomata’s harriers club and many other Wainuiomata residents, none moreso than the Carman and Sagaga whanau. Together the two families have 12 parkrun members who have amassed over 600 finishes at Lower Hutt.

The beauty of parkrun is that it is a community event for everyone no matter what age or ability. Lower Hutt parkrun’s oldest runner is in the 80+ category and there are many JUNIOR RUNNERS YEARS You will also see many parents pushing tamariki in strollers and runners running with their dogs.

What’s Cooking... Youth striking for climate in Bacon & Cheese Quiche Ingredients:

Method:

s 20g butter or oil s 250g or less bacon diced s 1/2 onion finely diced s 5 eggs s 1/2 cup each of cream and milk s 1/2 tsp salt & pepper s 1/2-1 cup tasty cheese grated s 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese grated

1. Line a deep dish with shortcrust pastry. Bake blind for 10-12 mins first at 225C (use baking beads)

2. In a frypan melt butter or oil and fry bacon then the onion Set aside.

3. In large bowl add eggs, milk, cream, salt n pepper - whisk together Add cheese and Parmesan - whisk Add the bacon and onion into the pie base. Pour egg mixture over.

4. Bake at 165C Bake for 40-50 mins. Test the quiche is done by jiggling it, it should have a little jiggle without being too soft in the middle.

5. Remove from oven and cool for up to an hour. Best served warm, not hot.

Lawns in April : By Wally Richards Now that the rains have moistened up the soil in many areas, it is the right time to sow new lawns, patch up or over-sow existing lawns, to thicken up the grasses.

If you want a really nice lawn you must have top quality lawn seed.

For those that do want a great looking lawn which is a lovely green carpet, then you are on a mission to get the best seed possible.

There is an alternative, and that is to buy instant lawn which comes in strips, which you lay on a prepared area.

I did that some years ago where I had a small area that I wanted a really great lawn for show.

I checked out the instant lawn people and selected a pure fescue type which was stunning. Seeds are certainly cheaper but if you don't end up with the lawn you prefer then the ready to lay lawns are good value.

There is less work with a instant lawn, it can be laid by the supplier or yourself and then its just a matter of ensuring adequate moisture and a bit of food.

If you going to sow a lawn or do some patching (with patching make sure you have the same seed mix as the rest of the lawn in that area) then you need to ensure that any weed seeds in the area have sprouted and been removed first.

The best value lawn seeds are uncoated simply because seeds are sold by the kilo and if you have a coating on a seed that weighs as much as the seed (or more) you are getting far less seed than uncoated.

Every seed is a prospective plant, the more grass plants in a given area makes for a better lawn, thicker and less chance of weeds establishing later.

I always note with amused interest, that both uncoated and coated lawn seeds have a recommendation of 1 kilo to do about 33 square metres.

So the coating does not serve any great purpose other than to give you less seeds for your money.

Very seldom would you find a green keeper buying and using coated lawn seed and they are the experts.

Once you have found a good, suitable lawn seed, but not sure of its viability (germination percentage), take a small amount of the seed and sprinkle onto some potting mix in a seedling punnet.

Sprinkle a little more potting mix to just cover and wet down the mix.

Place a meat tray under the punnet and keep the unit moist.

Place on a windowsill above the kitchen sink (or similar) so you can keep an eye on it.

Then sow the rest of the seed outside, where required. Now if you find that the seeds outside don't do well and your punnet does better then you have not looked after the new seeds outside right.

If you get a poor strike in both punnet and outside then likely the seed is faulty and you should return the packets to the supplier and ask for a refund.

If you use new potting mix in the punnet and you get weeds germinating amongst the grasses you also have a reason for complaint.

If I was going to sow a new lawn I would broadcast the seeds, then sprinkle Gypsum over the area, mixed half and half with sharp sand, (plasters sand) to cover the bare seed.

Next I would drench the area with MBL (Magic Botanic Liquid) mixed with water at the rate of 20ml per litre of water. These natural products will greatly assist and speed up germination.

If birds were a problem (after sowing) I would place some Bird Repeller Ribbon over the area. The area would be lightly watered with a hose once or twice a day if it did not rain.

After the grasses were established and had the first mowing then I would give the area a light feed with a slow release fertiliser such as Bio-Boost.

If you are wanting to thicken up your existing lawn then the best way to do it is to hire a scarifier and cut the grooves in the lawn (as well as lift the thatch) north/south, east/ west (mow the lawn first).

Then broadcast your new lawn seeds with Gypsum. Water to settle in seeds or use MBL in a watering can to do the same.

Roll the lawn with a hire roller to press seeds into the soil and grooves. Keep the area moist.

For general care of existing lawns you should check the lawn for weeds, thatch and moss.

If there are a number of weeds, you can either spot spray them or use a lawnboy to do the whole lawn.

Use a suitable spray for the types of weeds found.

Add Thatch Busta to the spray to remove thatch at the same time or if there is thatch in the lawn just use the product on its own.

Thatch is the debris that builds up in a lawn on the surface of the soil and makes for bad drainage, moss and diseases if not cleared.

Thatch Busta is a easy to use product that you just spray over the lawn at 100 mls to 10 litres of water to cover 100 sqM. It stimulates the natural micro-organisms to eat up the thatch, converting it to food for the grasses. It will eat up to an inch of thatch in a month.

The best lawns are obtained from sowing top quality lawn seed, never mowed low, fed with slow release foods, de-thatched spring and autumn, cultivated to form a dense mat of fine grasses that make it difficult for weeds to establish.

Lift in new listings welcome news for buyers Property prices showed no signs of slowing down during March, according to latest figures from realestate.co.nz.

Real-time data shows that average asking prices were up 16.9% year-on-year in March, with 14 of 19 regions hitting record asking price highs.

The national average asking price for Kiwi properties last month was $834,769 – costing on average $120,449 more than the same time last year.

However, there is good news for buyers in some parts of New Zealand.

“12 of our 19 regions saw a lift in new listings last month compared to March 2020,” says Sarah Wood, CEO of realestate. co.nz.

“Although we still have a stock shortage around the country, it was encouraging to see pockets of increased vendor activity during March.”

Record high asking prices in 14 of 19 regions Average asking prices were up year-on-year in every region across the country last month, with all but five regions reaching all-time asking price highs.

“We’ve rarely seen this many record highs in one month,” says Sarah.

“Only time will tell what impact the Government’s recent housing announcement will have, but these figures highlight the need for measures to help cool the market.”

Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Wellington, Nelson & Bays, Canterbury, Southland, Wairarapa, Central North Island and Manawatu/ Whanganui all reached peak asking prices since records began 14 years ago.

The biggest increase was seen in Central North Island, where

the average asking price climbed to $736,259 – up 41.5% from $520,421 in March 2020.

“Although this might be welcome news for sellers, Central North Island is a small region and when we see a number of large, high-value lifestyle properties coming onto the market that can push the average asking price up,” cautions Sarah.

While Marlborough didn’t achieve a record high in March, the region showed the next largest growth with prices up 37.6% year-on-year. This was followed

by Gisborne, where average asking prices were up 32.2%, and Wairarapa, which showed a 29.3% year-on-year increase.

In Auckland, the average asking price tipped over $1.1 million for the first time, despite a 24.0% increase in new listings. A property in the super-city now costs on average $1,100,593.

Cricket a hard, but must watch The international summer of cricket has come to an end and the future looks bright for the Black Caps.

The Black Caps won every home series and swept aside the West Indies, Pakistan and Bangladesh in all formats in dominant fashion and overcame a gritty Australia in a fun T20 series.

It was a big run-scoring summer for Henry Nicholls and Kane Williamson, a return to the good graces of fans for Martin Guptill and the emergence of Kyle Jamieson and

Devon Conway.

Sceptics can say the touring opposition have been, on a whole, poor which is a fair point.

The West Indies could not catch a cold, the Pakistan’s imploded time after time and Bangladesh were over-matched in all forms.

Even the Aussies did not send their strongest T20 team.

However, people could do well to remember this is the longest and most golden period of New Zealand cricket in our history.

The team is almost unbeatable at

home and far from a pushover on the road.

The team has depth.

World class batting, bowling and fielding and multiple guys waiting in the wings who can do a job.

The TAB currently has the Black Caps as $2.15 outsiders to beat India in the World Test Championship final against India at Southampton.

That’s good money for a team which should thrive in the swinging English conditions.

It’s hard to know whether mov-

ing broadcasting rights to Spark has been a success. New Zealand Cricket won’t release the figures of who has purchased a subscription, however I’d hazard a guess and say numbers have not been great.

People don’t like change and the older generation struggle to understand how an app works.

For me, Spark’s coverage has been passable but only just.

The commentary needs more credibility and everyone needs more training to create a more polished and professional product.

Yes, it’s season one but Spark has a lot of work to do to sharpen their content.

Regardless, if you love cricket, the $75 cost of three months of cricket is well worth it to see some of our best cricket player’s in our history do their thing.

The World Test Championship final in the middle of June will be compelling viewing, if you can handle the moonlight hours.

This team is special and this could be their best platform to show it.

MX glory for weekend warrior

He may describe himself as a “weekend warrior” these days, but Taranaki motorcycle shop owner Renny Johnston certainly made the most of his Easter Weekend, taking an enduro bike to win two national motocross titles.

The 35-year-old father-of-two had assembled his Husqvarna FE350 enduro bike just two days before the weekend’s racing at the 2021 New Zealand MX TT Nationals at Taupiri, and certainly didn’t arrive at the North Waikato venue with any great expectations of winning. He reckons he was “just there for a good time”.

He knew what was in store for him and his untested new machine, a couple of brutal days of racing against some of the country’s most experienced 450cc bike racers – from the motocross, cross-country, enduro scenes and even from the road-racing community as well.

The racing was tight – Rotorua enduro and cross-country ace Ethan Harris had been on top of the MX1 class standings, but just one point clear of Johnston, as the riders lined up for the final MX1 class race of the weekend.

Whomever finished in front of the other in this final showdown would take the glory.

In the end, Johnston finished his weekend with an impressive race victory, his 2-1-4-3-1 scorecard in the five MX1 class races giving him the title by six points from Harris, who had suffered his worst result of the weekend, a fourth, in that fateful final race.

Other class winners at the weekend were Te Aroha’s Luke van der Lee (MX2 class); Auckland’s Damon Nield (senior 125cc class); New Plymouth’s Mitch Rowe (veterans’ over-45 years and the Classic pre-1996 bikes class); Hamilton’s Mikayla Rowe (women’s class and the Classic Pre-2002 bikes class); Rotorua’s Ticayla Manson (junior women’s 12-16 years’ 150cc & 250cc class); Waimauku’s Ruby Leach (junior women’s 8-16 years’ 85cc and 150cc class); New Plymouth’s Shane Smith (clubmans MX3 class); Te Awamutu’s Jack Carmichael (junior 14-16 years’, 250cc); Waihi’s Luke Maitland (junior 12-16 years’, 125cc); Hamilton’s Carson Mackie ( junior 12-16 years’, 85cc); Wairoa’s Connor Cavaney (mini 65cc class) and Helensville’s Adam Bockett (mini 50cc class).

Waterside Karori v Wainuiomata – Central League

To kick start the long weekend, Wainuiomata travelled to Karori Park on a chilly and wet Good Friday for their round 2 clash of the 2021 Central League season.

After the previous week’s loss to Napier City Rovers, the lads were hoping to bounce back and put on a performance that they could be proud of.

The first 15 minutes of the first half were very even as both teams tried to figure each other out as well as get use to the conditions.

Wainui then took it up a gear and easily could have had one or two goals under their belt

but some good defending from Karori and Wainui not being able to be critical in the final third, meant the score remained goalless. Logan was rarely called upon in the Wainui goal as the defensive back four led by the Stroud brothers, Ben and Ashlen, held firm when Karori came into attack.

The second half began as the first ended except with a little bit more rain. The midfield creativity of Ta Eh Doe and Oliver Arrowsmith, backed up by the speed up front of Devon Thurston, started to cause more problems for the Karori defence as the game started to open up.

Coach Joe Hall made a couple of changes when he bought on James Murdoch-Gibbs and Louis Thomas for Ta Eh Doe and Devon Thurston.

Josh Larking got down the left and put in a beautiful cross which Louis met with two touches, one to bring it down on his chest and one to put it into the net past the advancing goal keeper. A deserved goal for the boys in Green.

Karori in the dying minutes won the game when a lucky deflection fell to their striker who made no mistake in finishing it. Karori took away the three points with a 2-1 win but there

were plenty of positives for Wainui to take from this game and into their next game.
