Father’s passion drives new Wellington North Rotary president Continued from page 1.

She is fluent in several languages, including German and Russian.

She is also developing her ability to learn Te Reo. Zaheda moved to Russia with her first husband in the late 1980s.

She experienced life in communist USSR where she worked for Lufthansa during the turbulent years of change.

With her marriage failing, Zaheda moved initially to England to join her siblings but, unable to obtain a UK resident visa, she was accepted by New Zealand, to join relatives, and moved here 22 years ago, where she met her husband, Chris.

After the arrival of twins, Nisha and Isaac, now 15, Zaheda decided to branch out and work for herself as a travel advisor/broker.

Running her own business for the last 14 years, she has corporate and leisure clients and is also a Virtuoso Luxury travel advisor.

Covid times have been a struggle, helped by some part time work in other fields.

In her address as the new president, Zaheda said “Although I joined the Kau Kau Rotary club, which subsequently merged with Wellington North, six years ago, my journey with Rotary began way back in the

a Community Paul Harris Fellow award made to Wellington City Missioner, Murray Edridge, who was nominated as a person who exemplifies the meaning of Community Service in our City.

Murray has had a distinguished career in business as well as the public service with a strong focus on youth support. The award was in honour of Murray’s involvement in a wide range of community focussed organisations.

With the intended guest speaker, Sir Anand Satyanand, unwell Murray Edridge stepped in at a day’s notice to fill the role.

Murray related the journey of his Rotary connections and travels and demonstrated that the reason for being Rotarians was humbling and entertaining all in one.

Couple win environment award Patrizia Vieno and Rod Clutton of Rewa Rewa Station have been named 2022 Regional Supreme Winners in the Greater Wellington Ballance Farm Environment Awards.

Run by the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust, the awards champion sustainable farming and growing. The Greater Wellington Ballance Farm Environment Awards were announced on 29 June.

Patrizia and Rod emigrated to New Zealand in 2011 after purchasing Rewa Rewa Station where they run 4,300 Romney sheep, 140 Angus cattle, cashmere goats and alpaca.

With New Zealand borders opening to international students, Whitireia and WelTec are readying for a new intake of 50 students from overseas.

“While Covid-19 has had an impact on international enrolments, our teams have continued to work closely with overseas institutions and Ɨkonga (students), many of whom are increasingly looking for flexible, blended learning opportunities such as the ones we offer,” says Mark Oldershaw, chief executive of Whitireia and WelTec. “As well as our key markets Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, China and India, we are proud to have been selected to partner with the Cook Islands in delivering tertiary qualifications where they have a gap in the market.

“This currently includes cyber security, which is not offered locally, and nursing where they have a skills shortage.

“With 40 students enrolled in the two Whitireia programmes in the Cook Islands, our tutors will spend blocks of two weeks in Rarotonga each semester, based at the University of South Pacific, with the remainder of the programme delivered online.

“Discussions are underway to roll out similar programmes in Samoa and Tonga.

“It is also heartening to see strong growth in our Chinese and Indian partnerships for joint delivery of programmes.

“For example, we have 100 students enrolled for our new China-based Bachelor of Information Technology in 2022.

Two international students from India who have just graduated from Whitireia in these programmes are Jaspreet Sindhwani and Vriti Dhugga.

“We came to New Zealand in 2020 and it has been a very tough time for me, as my husband and son are in India and have not been able to come and see me,” says Vriti who has just graduated in a Masters of Management.

“But the tutors from Whitireia have been absolutely amazing in helping me in every way, supporting me emotionally and with big decisions I have had to

make, not only with my study.”

“My tutors were so kind to me and supported my move to Napier so that I could take up a job at Hǀhepa as part of starting my residency and putting my study to work,” says Vriti, who is now a manager at HǀKepa.

Jaspreet heard about Whitireia before he came to New Zealand in 2020 through a friend in the education sector who recommended he apply.

“I loved that at Whitireia you felt part of a real campus, a real college,” says Jaspreet, who has just completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Management, and previously qualified as a mechanical engineer with an MBA in India. “I did not know anyone when I first arrived in New Zealand, but the friendly environment at Whitireia meant I made friends easily and it

really helped my confidence.”

Although already working in New Zealand and also applying for residency, Jaspreet is considering continuing his study at Whitireia.

Education New Zealand as well as Te Pukenga, the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology have embarked on ambitious campaigns to attract international students such as Vriti and Jaspreet, and Whitireia and WelTec teams have also set off on roadshows to meet existing contacts.

The Government has indicated that they will allow 5,000 new international Ɨkonga (students) into the motu (country) from the middle of the year. Alongside this, Government’s rebalanced visa system should streamline the visa process for Ɨkonga looking to study in Aotearoa.

“The first is inconsistent customer journey experiences and the current limited rail system capacity which result in the network being unable to meet mode share targets, and prevent growth and environmental obligations. The second is recognising the current infrastructure is not capable of safely accommodating additional trains, restricting the options available to accommodate future demand. The final challenge is the condition and configuration of the rail network which makes it vulnerable to service disruptions, which has a flow on impact onto the wider transport system,” says Samantha Gain.

The plan, which drives mode shift over a 30-year programme, provides: highly connected stations in communities where people work, live, play and learn; accommodating stations that make any wait both pleasant and productive; frequent services that are faster and more convenient than by car; reliable services that recover quickly from disruption; links that facilitate convenient connections for national freight customers; and infrastructure and safety systems that enable transport without undue conflict.

Train frequency will be able to progressively improve as infrastructure is improved.

Peak train services on the Hutt and KƗpiti lines would be increased in 2025 to four trains per hour, along with improved longer distance services to Masterton and Palmerton North by 2028. The peak service frequency is proposed to step up to six trains per hour (every 10 minutes) on the Hutt and KƗpiti lines by 2032, along with inter-peak services increasing to four trains per hour. The KƗpiti line is expected to further improve to 10 trains per hour during the peak by the mid 2030’s, and the Hutt Line by early 2040’s.

The preferred programme has a BCR range of 1.1 to 1.5 (with a sensitivity range of 0.9 to 1.8), based on discounted economic benefits of between $4,430m (lower patronage) and $5,760m (higher patronage), and discounted economic costs of $3,880m, over the 60-year evaluation period. Benefits are split across wider economic (24 per cent), road user (20 per cent), public transport user (19 per cent), land use (18 per cent), rail freight (14 per cent), and other benefits (6 per cent). The programme has a recommended National Land Transport Programme priority order rating of 2, based on the BCR range, a very high Government Policy Statement on Land Transport Alignment rating, and a high Scheduling rating.

by Greater Wellington it will now go to Waka Kotahi for its review and endorsement of the vision. Funding decisions will follow further detailed work on specific work packages.

Greater Wellington Regional Council endorsed a bold and visionary plan for regional rail services this week.

The Wellington Rail Programme Business Case, a 30-year customer-driven strategic investment plan, outlines what is required beyond current investment to help drive the region’s economic development and social wellbeing in an environmentally and socially sustainable and resilient manner. It covers the passenger services and infrastructure needed to deliver a modern transit system, and the network infrastructure required to support this system while also enabling a growing freight operation.

Councillor Daran Ponter, Chair of Greater Wellington says the plan is integral to the development of the Wellington Region’s rail service and linking into the neighbouring Horizons region.

“The region’s rail system will need to respond to significant population growth over the coming decades. The 2021 Wellington Regional Growth Framework (RGF), a spatial plan developed by central government, local government, and iwi stakeholders, anticipates that the Wellington-Horowhenua region will need to accommodate an additional 200,000 people, a 35 per cent increase, and 100,000 jobs in the next 30 years,” says Cr Ponter.

“This business case provides a clear investment pathway for the region’s rail system over the next 30 years. We hope the Government will come to the party and see significant value in this investment and how it will enable important regional and national growth and environmental policy objectives,” says Cr Ponter.

The plan outlines how the region’s rail system will need to respond to significant mode shift requirements over the coming decades, reflecting regional and national mode shift and carbon reduction targets. At the regional level, the 2021 Wellington Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) seeks to increase active and public transport mode share by 40 per cent and reduce carbon emissions by 35 per cent by 2030.

The scope of the Wellington Rail Programme Business Case complements the Let’s Get Wellington Moving (LGWM) programme. LGWM will provide mass transit to the south and east of Wellington City, which will complement the rail system that makes up the rapid transit system to the north, and interface with it at Wellington Station to enhance cross-region travel options and support mode shift. The success of two programmes is consequently interlinked.

Business case approved for new sludge minimisation facility A proposed new Sludge Minimisation Facility (SMF) for Wellington is a step closer today, following unanimous approval of the business case by the Wellington City Mayor and Councillors.

The new facility is a significant and critical investment in Wellington’s future. It will reduce the mass flow of sewage sludge going to landfill by more than 80 percent, and help

the Council meet its targets of halving its emissions by 2030 and becoming a net zero carbon capital by 2050.

Chief Infrastructure Officer Siobhan Procter says the current sludge management process is not sustainable, and it is imperative that a new solution is found.

“The existing consents at the Southern Landfill expire in June 2026, and a new sludge

management solution is required to support the consenting of the new landfill extension.

“If we don’t provide a sludge treatment solution in Wellington, we’ll have to truck raw sludge to Bonny Glen Landfill in the Manawatnj. This would substantially increase the environmental impact due to the odour and carbon emissions that would result, as well as the increased environmental risk associated with loss of containment during transport.”

SMF Project Technical Director Chris French says that the Council carried out a rigorous options assessment and economic analysis before arriving at a preferred option – a thermal hydrolysis, digestion and thermal drying plant located at Moa Point.

“We engaged independent technical experts to identify a long list of 25 potential options, which was then shortlisted to four remaining options. A Multi-Criteria Analysis was conducted to compare function, mana whenua values, complexity, environment and cost. The shortlisted options then underwent a cost-to-benefit analysis, and assessed for strategic fit, community and business needs, value for money, affordability and mana whenua values.

“The thermal hydrolysis, digestion and thermal drying process works by using heat to break down large molecules. This is fol-

lowed by anaerobic digestion, which reduces the total mass of sludge into a stable product which is easier to dewater or dry.

“The process mimics an accelerated natural decomposition process of waste. It results in what is known as a Grade A biosolids product, which is low in pathogens and has multiple re-use opportunities in a circular economy. It also produces biogas which is captured for bio-energy generation.”

Wellington City Council has been working with Crown Infrastructure Partners (CIP) to deploy a new funding tool made available to Local Authorities under the Infrastructure Funding and Financing Act 2020. The funding tool is administered by CIP and enables private capital to be raised for new infrastructure.

The SMF project will return to Council in December 2022 for final funding approval.

The Council is now preparing to lodge the necessary resource consents, after which the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the facility. Council will also host a public drop-in session, where members of the community can talk to the project team.

Physical site works are expected to be underway early in 2023.

Kirwan hits the capital for mental health All Blacks legend Sir John Kirwan will arrive in Wellington today for a public mental health event at Island Bay School as part of his landmark drive across Aotearoa to continue raising funds and awareness for mental health.

Sir John’s ambition over the two-week national fundraising campaign is to raise enough money to roll out Mitey to 40 more schools, benefitting 11,000 Kiwi kids, across the country.

Sir John Kirwan commented: “We have a hugely ambitious goal to raise $1 million for the future wellbeing of our tamariki. I’d ask the people of Wellington to dig deep and give what they can to support this important cause.

I know we can do it, and I know Kiwis will get behind this moment. Together, we can change the course of mental health in this country.”

“We have some of the worst mental health statistics in the OECD and this will take a generation to change our trajectory. Mitey helps teach the ‘ABC of mental health’ to children when they’re young, and with New Zealand’s support we will be able to roll this vital programme out to hundreds more children in Wellington.”

Mitey is a new approach to teaching mental health as part of the New Zealand curriculum, enabling children to learn about it at school, every day, just like literacy and maths.

Developed over two years by the Sir John Kirwan Foundation, with input from highly experienced specialists from the University of Auckland as well as New Zealand educators, teachers and clinicians, Mitey has already positively impacted more than 12,000 New Zealand children.

The Wellington community event took place at Island Bay School, with the wider school community and mental health advocates in attendance.

Help shape better bus and bike trips from the west Plans for bus and bike improvements between the Botanic Garden ki PaHNƗNƗ and the city are open for feedback from now until 26 July 2022.

Wellingtonians have asked for better transport options, more housing, and action on climate change. Improvements on this route are among the many ways Wellington City Council is getting on with it.

As part of preparing our city for the future, the Council is planning to make interim improvements for people riding bikes and using buses between the Botanic Garden ki PaHNƗNƗ and the city and waterfront via Tinakori Road, Bowen and Whitmore streets.

The changes will complement improvements already planned through the Let’s Get Wellington Moving programme and expected to start in late July or early August, which will make the intersection of Bowen Street and The Terrace safer and easier for people on foot.

The bike and bus improvements have been developed based on

expert technical advice, and some adjustments have already been made to the plans in response to suggestions from local businesses and community groups. Over the next few weeks, we’re keen to hear from people to see whether there are any other tweaks that could be made to make the changes even better.

3njroro ƖPua (Planning and Environment) Committee Chair Councillor Iona Pannett says the improvements planned to this key route from the western suburbs, and in other areas, will enable more people to get around in zero or low-carbon ways, support growing neighbourhoods and free up space for people who need to drive.

“They are an integral part of improving public transport and making it safer and easier for more people of all ages and abilities to choose to make some trips by bike or scooter if they want to.

“The Council is grateful for the involvement of people in the local community who have worked hard to provide some great suggestions

to meet the needs of multiple groups. We look forward to further engagement with the community on this matter,” she adds.

The changes include: Uphill bike lane on Bowen Street and Tinakori Road to the Botanic Garden ki PaeNƗNƗ entrance, separated from the traffic lane with low rubber dividers and marker poles similar to Brooklyn Road.

New shared downhill bike and bus lane – this will be peak-hour only on Tinakori Road (7am-9am and P120 parking at other times) and full time on Bowen Street.

Bike lanes on either side of Whitmore Street connecting Bowen Street to the waterfront, separated from the traffic lanes with low rubber dividers and marker poles.

Councillors will consider the feedback and are expected to make a decision on 11 August. If approved, work is likely to start about September and take several months.

Once the designs are in place, people will be able to experience the changes and provide further feedback which could be

incorporated into more permanent changes in the future. We’ll also be collecting data to evaluate how well the changes are working.

Making changes in this way helps to get some bus and bike improvements in place as quickly as possible so more people can benefit ahead of the more extensive and permanent street changes that will happen on key routes through the Let’s Get Wellington Moving programme.

Kids’ bus designs to hit the streets Bill’s bus will again be part of the Metlink fleet adorned with winning artwork from the Design a Metlink Bus competition.

After being a winner in 2021, Bill Kelly (10) is among six tamariki whose designs have been chosen to wrap six Metlink buses on the streets of the Wellington region this year.

He is joined by co-winners Jun Fauchelle (13), Thomas Gregory (5), Alex McLeod (11), Cameron Roche (11) and Sophie-Grace Uili (10).

Cameron, from Newlands Intermediate, has a design which features flying leaves and blossom, an apt depiction of wind-swept flora in our region.

Alex, from Raroa Intermediate, also had a design which stood-out.

As well as containing a stylish version of the Metlink logo, Alex’s design depicts a grey, windy Wellington day and Wellingtonians wrapped up against the cold. One of them seems to be holding a hot cup of coffee, something for which Wellington is famous.

Now in its second year, the Design a Metlink Bus competition challenges the region’s rangatahi to unleash their creativity on artwork to bedeck Metlink single and double decker buses.

This year, entrants were asked to depict what they love about the Wellington region. The six winning designs were chosen by a panel of Metlink staff and Greater Wellington councillors.

“Design a Metlink Bus builds awareness and appreciation of pub-

lic transport among our rangatahi and all the people of our region,” said competition judge and Greater Wellington Deputy Chair Adrienne Staples.

“It also adds a touch of flash and dash to the Metlink fleet, with entries featuring all kinds of colourful creatures and concepts that get noticed by the public.”

Greater Wellington Transport Committee Deputy Chair David Lee was blown away by the calibre of entries.

“The standard was so high it was very difficult to choose the final six.

Many of the entrants would have been worthy winners,” Cr Lee said.

“The final six are sensational, with themes ranging across our region’s native birds, native trees, and native wind.”

Snow Season? YIP! GARDENING THIS WEEK Disease control: By Wally Richards One of the products that we have that is excellent for preventing and the control of a number of plant diseases is Perkfection.

We named it Perkfection for Roses as the commercial product is called Perk Supa.

Gardeners have found it a boon in prevention of diseases such as black spot and rust on roses during the season.

Perkfection along with Magic Botanic Liquid make a great combination for plant health.

Silverleaf disease in stone fruit and roses has been arrested if you notice the disease early and spray Perkfection once a month during the growing season, starting again in the spring when the plants start to leaf up.

Buxus disease is a curse for people growing Buxus hedges but a bi-monthly spray will keep the hedge looking great.

I remember a gardener that had a Buxus hedge that had got so bad there were hardly any leaves left.

He used Perkfection and after about 6 months the hedge was back to it full glory.

There is a product out there for Buxus disease which as far as I am aware is a mild solution of the chemical in Perkfection.

Apparently from feedback I have heard that it does help Buxus recovery but not as quickly and as effectively as our one does.

Downy mildew or dry berry will be cured with Perkfection.

During wet times when water sensitive plants start to have root rot then sprays of Perfection will speed up recovery as long as the plant has not gone beyond the point of no return.

So what is Perkfection then?

The active ingredient of Perkfection is ‘Phosphite ion’ or Phosphonic Acid. (Potassium ions are also present).

The safety when handling Perkfection can be described by the following; formulations of neutral salts, which do not contain wetting agents, would have very little, if any at all, absorption through the skin.

Only people with extreme allergy problems would show any sensitivity. Being neutral salts it has no corrosive effect and only causes irritation to people with very sensitive skin.

If spray drift entered the eyes then the irritation would be similar to that experienced with a salt solution.

Corrosive damage will not occur. This all means that Perkfection is safe to handle and spray, though all care of oneself should be taken, it is a product that you do not have to use extreme measures, as one should do with many other garden sprays of a chemical nature.

The next important thing is “There is NO WITHHOLDING PERIOD” when used on food crops.

I would suggest however if you pick something that you have sprayed that day, wash it as you may have a ‘tainted’ taste.

Perkfection is used extensively by commercial growers (as PerK Supa) on produce and fruit as it’s safe, effective, in control and not restrictive on exports of produce.

We have suggested Perkfection for Roses and other plants as an alternative to more toxic sprays, for the assistance in recovery from/or prevention of, the following problems, Black Spot, Downy Mildew, Phytophthora Root Rot, Canker, Heart Rot, Damping Off, Crown Rot, Leaf Blight, Silver Leaf, Late Blight, Collar Rot, Pink Rot, Brown Rot, Armillaria, and Gummy Stem Rot. Now that’s quiet a list of diseases and it also means that many of your disease related problems can be overcome with this safe to use product.

Besides using Perkfection over your

roses for the likes of Black spot and Downy mildew you can also use it as a spray over all your fruiting plants and trees including your strawberries.

It can be used also over your potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, beans, cucurbits (cucumbers etc) lawns, onions, passion fruit, Cauliflowers, cybidium orchids and ornamental plants and vines.

In fact there is no where you cannot use Perkfection to advantage.

Being ‘Synthetic Organic Phosphates’ what you are doing, is placing this valuable material, onto the foliage of your plants, where it is very readily absorbed and transferred through the whole of the plant.

This fortifies the plant’s cells, increases the plant’s immune system and makes your plants less susceptible to invading pathogens.

There is however a down side, as with any good thing, you can have too much and the recommendation is to use Perkfection at 5 ml per litre of spray once a month only, and only for about 5 times in a season.

(Note a season is the normal period of time for that crop or plant. Roses are from Spring till Autumn. Most annuals 5-6 months.)

The reason is that, you can over load your plant with organic phosphates causing a clogging of the cells and halting growth until the system clears.

Prevention is better than cure and by spraying your plants in the spring you give the greatest protection to leaves and fruit, autumn spray will give greatest protection to roots and tubers.

I have suggested that on the 1st of the month to spray your roses and other plants with Perkfection, Mycorrcin Plus and Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL).

14 days later (15th) spray with Mycorrcin Plus and MBL. If insect problems occur then spray with the most suitable Neem Product. (Neem Tree Oil, scale, mealy bug, thrips and mites, caterpillars and beetles; Add Super Pyrethrum for aphids and whitefly.)

All these sprays are compatible.

They are all safe to use with most of them being organic and that’s what we need in this day and age.

Wellington City Libraries end overdue fines Wellington City Libraries has scrapped overdue library fines.

It follows a trend across the country eliminating the fines for overdue books and other items.

Wellington City Councillors approved the new fines free policy as part of the 2022/2023 Annual Plan, which was formally adopted by Wellington City Council today. The initiative received strong support during community consultation on the Annual Plan which was carried out in April.

What does it mean?

The new policy means that no overdue library fines will be charged from 1 July 2022. In addition, current overdue fines on library cards as at 30 June 2022 will be wiped, though outstanding debts that have been referred to a debt collection agency will remain on cards and continue to apply.

Customers with library cards that were previously blocked due to unpaid overdue fines will now be able to use their cards, as long as that debt has not been referred to an agency.

Existing rules still apply on replacing lost books The new policy does not alter existing rules for lost items. If

items are not returned after 30 days, replacement cost fees will still apply and library cards will be blocked until the fee is paid or item returned.

Customers will still be notified about due dates and encouraged to return books for others who are waiting.

The new policy does not apply to issues or services such as DVD loans, expired reserve fees or inter-loan fees.

Access for everyone Laurinda Thomas, Manager Libraries & Community Spaces, says “We want everyone to have fair and easy access to information, reading, and learning through our libraries.

“Overdue fines have disproportionately affected those who cannot afford to pay. There are families who have stopped borrowing items due to the fear of running up even small fines which they cannot afford.

“However, the core of our library vision is access for everyone, and removing fines will increase the number of customers who are able to use our libraries – it’s as simple as that!

“With our new fines free policy, we look forward to welcoming back customers who may have

“There was a customer perception that they will ‘get in trouble’ for returning items that are overdue. In fact, some libraries have seen a significant increase

in returned books after they eliminated overdue fines. People were more likely to return items in the long run,” says Laurinda Thomas.

Johnsonville Cellar Club looking to increase membership The Committee of the Johnsonville Cellar Club, now in its 43rd year of operation, is looking to increase its membership which currently stands at just below 60.

The recently re-elected President, Murray Jaspers, says the Club is not solely for wine connoisseurs but was set up for members to learn about wine and wineries from people who are deeply involved in the industry, so is suitable for those who are newcomers to wine right through to those who are knowledgeable on the subject.

The Club’s regular meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month in the Johnsonville Community Centre with a 7.45pm start time.

There are other social events during the year such as dinners, a barbeque and some tastings from the Club’s cellar.

There is an annual membership fee of $25 and a modest fee for each tasting which covers the cost of the wines that are on taste that evening plus room hire and supper.

Offsetting this there are often opportunities to purchase the presenter’s wines at discounted prices.

Mr Jaspers said the Club is gaining a reputation nationally with a wide

range of wineries offering to make presentations.

A recent example was a presentation

by Te Mata Estate.

This winery is one of the country’s best known producers with a huge international reputation, especially for their prestige Coleraine label, so having them to a meeting is a significant coup for the Cellar Club as they rarely present to wine clubs.

The presenter was Brett Newall who is a vastly experienced and highly regarded wine expert and commentator.

In August Gordon Russell of Esk Valley Winery and in September Peter Robertson of Brookfields Winery will be presenting.

These two Hawke’s Bay wine-makers are regarded as being at the very top of their field, so enjoying their presentations will be another feather in the Club’s cap Anyone interested in wine should head along to one of the Club’s relaxed and friendly meetings to find out what the Club is about.

Birdwood Reserve gets a tidy-up A group of hardworking volunteers from St. Ninians Uniting Parish and Karori Kaitaki have helped tidy Birdwood Reserve.

One group cleared rubbish and weeded all around the carpark area, edges and bank and another went up the Birdwood steps to clear/poison Old Man’s Beard and Banana Passionfruit weeds from alongside the steps.

Mayor Andy Foster and his group of

volunteers scrambled down the gully.

They hauled up bags of rubbish collected over past working bees.

They also weeded this area which has rapid weed growth.

By the end of the day, it was clear to see the Renga Renga lilies and other natives from earlier planting bees thriving well, all the garden areas looking tidy, and the gully too.

Burnout becoming an issue in Wellington A Skills Consulting Group report gives a stark warning to Wellington businesses that don’t prioritise workplace wellbeing – organisations will be out of people and out of pocket if employers continue putting their head in the sand.

Newly released data from the Skills Consulting Group Work Wellbeing Index surveying more than 1800 New Zealand workers revealed Wellington’s wellbeing score out of 100 is 62, five points down from twelve months ago.

While Canterbury scored the lowest in the table at 56, New Zealand’s average wellbeing score is 61 and is closely consistent with last year’s national score (62).

The Index shows that a third of Kiwi businesses still don’t have any kind of wellbeing programme in place, despite one in three employees say they have either experienced burnout or known someone who has in their workplace.

“Burnout is insidious and invasive for both the person suffering and the business they work for. It’s a disease, which left untreated, can leave the person scared and the business out of pocket,” says Jane Kennelly, GM Wellbeing, Skills Consulting Group.

“The fact that one third of Kiwi businesses still haven’t got the message means there is a mis-match between what employees need and what businesses are offering. If businesses don’t take heed they will pay with people on long-term sick leave, growing attrition rates and increased recruitment costs.”

The research points to the key drivers of wellbeing including showing genuine care, enabling personal care, having wellbeing

structures and programmes in place, enabling care of others, manager genuine care, and team member and colleague care.

“If an organisation understands these critical drivers then they can start pulling together the programmes and tools their staff need,” said Kennelly.

The research also shows that certain industries and other demographics are struggling more than others with burnout. The highest levels of burnout are in the government (47%) and healthcare (48%) sectors. Meanwhile women were more likely, at 41%, than men (34%) to experience burnout in the workplace.

“The fact that healthcare workers experienced higher levels of burnout is unsurprising, given the ongoing pressures on that workforce,” says Kennelly. “In terms of women, it’s likely that women were responsible for the bulk of the childcare at home at the same time as managing their workload in a pandemic environment.”

According to Kennelly, there is a way forward and it starts with understanding Ok-nomics – a concept that centres on if staff ‘are OK’ and feeling valued, rewarded, and listened-to, will create a culture of success. Staff who don’t will have the opposite effect.

“Once leaders understand and accept this concept they can look at the wellbeing drivers and start pulling together a strategy to transform their workforce. It isn’t about providing fruit and discounted gym memberships, it’s about the systemic care of understanding the cause, identifying what your people need and treating the cause - not the symptoms.”

Burnout is insidious and invasive for both the person suffering and the business they work for. It’s a disease, which left untreated, can leave the person scared and the business out of pocket, says Jane Kennelly, GM Wellbeing, Skills Consulting Group.

Council splashes out for kids in need Wellington City Council is proud to announce a new partnership providing swimming pool passes to families at Ronald McDonald House (RMHC) Wellington.

The swim passes are for whƗQau to use while staying at the Newtown RMHC, giving them some much needed time out, keeping them active, and also providing a bit of fun during some challenging times.

The partnership is in addition to passes for Wellington Zoo and the Cable Car, and Wellington Museums are also sharing the aroha with complimentary passes to Space Place.

“RMHC provides Kiwi families support and accommodation free of charge and any support is welcome,” says Wayne Howett, RMHC New Zealand CEO. “We believe families should never be separated when they need each other the most. We make it a priority to provide accommodation to all families that need it, no matter the added cost.

“This partnership with Wellington City Council providing access to their pools will bring relief to the families, and some much-needed recreation in what can be a long, sedentary process.”

Providing an opportunity for families to be distracted in a positive and healthy way was a no-brainer when the idea first came up according to Council’s Recreation Facilities Manager, Mat Bialy.

“Keeping active is important for mental and physical health. Not only are the benefits of swimming well known, but it’s also important for safety reasons – and it’s fun!”

The partnership announcement also coincides with RMHC’s annual appeal. This year’s appeal kicked-off on 15 June and runs until 15 July, and for the first time, the month-long appeal includes a National Pyjama Day on 1 July, when Kiwis can don their PJs, make a gold coin donation at www.rmhc.org.nz/night-knights, and support the families in the care of RMHC.

Sport is an extra for many families in 2022 The barriers for Joe and Jill Average to play sport go far beyond cost in 2022.

I say this as a group called Affordable Sports for Greater Wellington look to pressure Wellington City Council to drop fees to make playing grassroots sports more accessible however, in my view, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

The group has been pulled together by five major codes: Wellington Hockey, Capital Football, Capital Basketball, Cricket Wellington, and Wellington Rugby, as well as College Sport Wellington.

Group Chair Lisa Jones said councils are making it too expensive to play sport because of the unfair fees to provide and maintain fields, turfs and indoor facilities.

“The rise of the cost of living now makes these fees a real threat to participation in sport. Councils say sport is good for residents’ wellbeing but do nothing to keep fees from going up, it’s now time for us to do something about it.”

The Wellington region has the most expensive fees in New Zealand for sports, clubs and schools to use Council grounds.

Councils charge fees for use of fields in competitions, and fees to clubs for training, and for facilities such as changing rooms,” she says.

While all that is perfectly logical and is one of the barriers to sport, I think the lifestyle of families no longer make sport as viable during the week.

Parents often work two jobs and it’s a commitment to get kids to practices and games.

Gone are the days where kids can walk to their trainings and home again, many are unlikely to see public transport as a timely way of getting to these events on time either.

So that leaves time-poor parents having to shuttle kids all around the place.

Then comes the realisation that the child won’t be the next All Black, Black Cap or Olympian, their interest level drops and the social pressures of having a boyfriend or girlfriend, alcohol and passing NCEA increase.

My partner and I discussed that if we had a child we’d try to steer them clear of high

contact sports like rugby because the risk of serious injury is greater than say basketball, tennis or squash.

As a couple of cricket tragics, watching your child play for up to eight hours on a Saturday is a huge time commitment and the traditional Saturday model of sport, where parents are out the door at 8am and on chilly sidelines, is outdated.

I’d much rather see my potential child of the future play midweek basketball at night, indoors and get it over and done with so our weekends would be free.

Priorities change once you’re just playing sport for the fun and fitness of it and as the economic reality starts to bite, social sport in 2022 may be seen as a luxury for many.

The Men’s Central Football League has hit the two thirds mark and there wouldn’t be too many long odds now to determine the top four sides to progress through to the National Summer League later this year.

At Karori Park on Saturday Elvis had them all shook up when Elvis Imarhiagbe put TFS North Wellington on the board after 18 minutes against Waterside Karori. Imarhiagbe was on the end of a well flighted cross and it was white ball corner pocket as the ball was guided in slow motion into the bottom of the net. It was not an easy execution by any stretch and Imarhiagbe may well be called up for Pot Black if he chooses another vocation.

Norths had the game by the scruff of the neck and a win would not help Waterside’s aspiration for fourth place at the end of the season. Norths put the pressure on themselves though when not for the first time this season, they had a man invited to leave the field of play by the referee and were facing a 50-minute slog with just the 10 men. It looked like

an impossible task for the visitors, but they continued to guts the match out and retained the upper edge, despite the personnel deficiency.

The home crowd was elated when a penalty was called for Waterside Karori in the 74th minute after a North’s player was adjudged to have handled the ball.

That seemed to be a very tall order when the ball was walloped by a Waterside player at point blank range and ball found hand rather than hand found ball. The biggest mystery of all was why the call was made so late and play had already carried on for what seemed an eternity.

Ours is not to reason why though and Simon Chretien sent the ball into the bottom left of the net and the scores were tied at 1 all.

An urgent call was made for Harry Houdini to see how Norths could do better than limp home for a draw. Houdini wasn’t home but substitute Alex Mort was. Fresh from a stint at Christchurch United, Mort duly obliged with a left footed thunderbolt from way out wide to seal the match for Norths 2-1, in the 92nd minute.

Rangers edged past Wellington Phoenix Reserves 2-1 in a much-anticipated game. Wellington Olympic had no trouble dispatching Petone 5-0. On Sunday Napier City Rovers overcame a slow start at home but won comfortably enough in the end, 4-0 over Wellington United.

It was a similar situation at Endeavour Park with Wests finishing strongly in a 4-1 win over Havelock North Wanderers.

Wellington Olympic retain their lead at the top of the table on 30 points, Miramar and the Nix, sit on 24 points and Rovers are on 21. At the other end, Wellington United have 6 points, Havelock North 9, with Wests and Petone on 11. North Wellington and Waterside Karori are sitting mid-stream on 12 and 15 points, respectively.

In the Women’s W League competition, the goals were plentiful for the winners.

Palmerston North Marist prevailed 7-2 over Victoria University, Wellington United won 6-0 over Seatoun and Petone defeated Mana Coach Services North Wellington 6-1. Palmerston North also retain their lead for another week on 17 points, followed by Waterside Karori on 15 and Wellington United on 13 points.

Johnsonville suffered a frustrating 27-22 loss to Wainuiomata in the opening round of rugby’s Hardham Cup on Saturday.

It continued a downward trend of results for the Hawks who have struggled to find their rhythm late in the season.

Coach Jason Adamson described it as another frustrating loss.

“We’re just not executing when we need too,” Jason says.

“I thought the forward effort, particularly at scrums and line outs was solid but Wainui took their chances and we didn’t.

“Our playmakers didn’t put us in a position to control the game and we made mistakes at crucial times.

“We knew Wainui would be up for it and come with a point to prove and they certainly did that.”

Jason says the team showed some spirit during the season that they were capable of playing exciting, attacking rugby and he believed there was still a chance of showing it.

“We have had some key injury losses but I know this group are hungry to do better, we just have to win the key moments and try to keep our season alive.

Jason says the team will need to regain some confidence at training this week before they travel to take on the Upper Hutt Rams on Saturday.
