Housing a weeping sore Continued from page 1 There have been attempts at getting an additional access route in the past with a petition to develop the existing tunnel five years ago, and the neglect by central and local government to deal with the issue has long been festering, but to date there has been no traction on the issue.

Garnering public support for the road, opening up enough land for around 2500 new houses, Chris held a meeting packing out the Builderbeck Hall in Wainuiomata.

“I’m sticking my neck out I

realise it is controversial for some people, I am in parliament to get stuff done and I look at the state of the city and there are a lot of great things happening including Wainuiomata but the great big weeping sore on our city is housing,” Chris says.

“The next greenfield land in Lower Hutt and Wainuiomata is Wainuiomata north and I think we should get on with it.”

Questions were raised around how it would be financed with local Linda Olsen commenting that she sees it as a future project but not at the moment.

In terms of paying for the road if

it did go ahead Chris says the investigation work and preparation work would be at a reasonably low cost and it would be Lower Hutt ratepayers that would foot the bill.

“The city council would bare that cost and potentially there would be a contribution from the transport agency to that cost as well and it would be possibly a couple of million dollars tops,” he says.

If the proposal stacks up Chris suggests there would be a fifty fifty split for the cost between the Lower Hutt City Council the transport agency and the special

fund made available to unlock land for housing. A resident from Upper Hutt who was at the meeting made the point that the land being looked at on that side of the hill is exactly where his house is and the plan needs to take into consideration the affect it will have on the population on that side of the hill.

He says there would be a negative impact on an area where there is lower socioeconomic housing.

“Most of Naenae would be in some way affected I am not going to sugar coat it, but there is impact whenever we do development,” Chris says.

“It has come at the right time for me I lost With the hundreds of Peggy squares being made for Pataka blankets joining them all my brother and my best friend,” Rose says.

Most of the women that have been making together has been therapeutic for Rose Martin.

Deciding what squares go into the blanket the squares use the process as a form a therapy can be a challenge but with an array of choices Pataka’s Deb McIvor says.

Contributors have made anything from 200 Rose has been busy constructing the blankets to 300 squares and any money made from and with the work she has found healing.

She recently had two loses in her life and the sale of the blankets goes onto supporting working with her hands creating blankets the Pataka.

An artist and student and currently part of the protest occupation of Shelly Bay Tayla is a contemporary Maori artist from Ngai Tuhoe. She creates from a range of mediums acrylic paintings and digital drawings and

is inspired by traditional Maori designs, expressive femininity and nature.

“My main inspiration is Robyn Kahukiwa and her whole thing is doing these tupuna figures, being real political and expressing her culture through her art and I am the same but I do it in my own way and incorporate digital as well,” Tayla says.

Some of her art is based on TV shows with some of the charac-

ters she has created expressing a part of her and her love for raakau.

Raakau Maori (Maori weaponry) was designed for handto-hand combat. In battle it was common for toa (warriors) to take a long handled weapon such as a taiaha (long-handled fighting staff) and a short weapon such as a patu (club) tucked into a belt.

“I do my raakau with poses specific to my style and I love

doing indigenous features and making them strong and beautiful so younger girls can look at it and think that is Maori and that is cool,” Tayla says.

She says a big thing that fuels her toi mahi is the significance of representation for Maori culture.

“I am extremely passionate about creating things that reflect the beauty of Te Ao Maori in order to represent how amazing our people are.”

Police scam warning Police are warning people to be alert to a scam circulating on Facebook after a number of recent reports.

Victims of the scam have reported being misled by fake Facebook accounts which appear to belong to their friends or family members.

created by scammers using pictures and personal information from public Facebook profiles.

Scammers hiding behind the fake accounts get in contact with victims advising them they have won prize money from a ‘promotion’, but that they need to pay money into an account before they can receive their

reward.

The scammer puts the victim in touch with a third party who requests personal information, bank and credit card details from the victim.

The third party also requests the victim pay a fee, usually around $2000, with the promise of receiving the ‘prize money’.

The sums requested then increase, with victims being deceived into paying many thousands of dollars.

Babies not meeting infant feeding guidelines New research reveals that a significant number of babies are not being fed in accordance with New Zealand’s infant feeding guidelines and this puts them at greater risk for childhood obesity.

The research, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, looked at adherence to New Zealand’s infant feeding guidelines in the first year of life for children in this country’s largest longitudinal study of child development, Growing Up in New Zealand.

The study found one in four babies were fed in line with the current Ministry of Health guidelines, which cover feeding practices such as duration of breastfeeding; age at which babies start solid food; fruit and vegetable intake; addition of salt and sugar to food; eating iron rich food; and consumption of inappropriate drinks.

The study found that very low adherence to infant feeding guidelines was subsequently associated with childhood obesity at four-and-a-half years old.

Checking tyre pressure on quad bikes should be a fundamental health and safety process, says WorkSafe New Zealand.

Harm resulting from quad bikes continues to be a serious issue in New Zealand. There have been 75 fatalities across the country since 2006. A further 614 people have been seriously injured.

The reminder comes after a fatality on Tui Glen Farms in Wharepuhunga in the Waikato in January 2020.

WorkSafe also recommends that businesses consider installing crush protection devices (CPDs) on the back of quad bikes. Currently, WorkSafe are working with ACC on a cash back offer on CPDs, to help ensure workers go home healthy and safe to their whānau.

Brighter futures for at-risk youth Supporting young people to be successful and confident in the face of adversity is a daily job for the staff at Youth Inspire – and is something they’ll be better able to provide for the most at-risk rangatahi, thanks to new government funding.

This Lower Hutt-based charity has been providing employment and driver licence training for local rangatahi (young people) since 2014, helping those rangatahi overcome the barriers stopping them from being able to take control of their own futures. While most rangatahi on Youth Inspire programmes become confident young people with new employment or educational opportunities firmly within their sights, a minority don’t make it to the graduation ceremony, because the issues they face prove too much of a barrier.

“Since 2014, we’ve worked with

over one thousand rangatahi and most have completed our programmes and moved into employment, education, or training.

But there are those who just need more support, more care and more opportunities to make sure that they thrive”, General Manager Ali Black says .

“It’s sometimes proved impossible to help get these most at-risk youth over the finishing line because we haven’t been able to provide the kind of intensive support they need.”

Kanoa – the regional economic development and investment unit that sits within the Ministry of Business and Innovation – are stepping in to help fund that support. Kanoa have granted Youth Inspire access to the He Poutama Rangatahi (HPR) funding – a funding stream dedicated to supporting programmes which improve employment and educational

outcomes for rangatahi most at risk of long-term unemployment, and who may need extra individualised and ongoing support to connect to training and employment.

“With this funding, we will deliver a targeted Youth Inspire programme called ‘Inspiring Youth Futures”, Ali says.

“As well as the employability and driver license training that form the core of our programmes, Inspiring Youth Futures will tailor a pathway plan, work with whanau and, crucially, provide ongoing pastoral care to help these young people become engaged in meaningful education, training or employment.

“The intensive support Inspiring Youth Futures will be able to provide is unique for our region, and has the potential to change the lives of our rangatahi who deserve better than the hand they’ve been dealt.”

Ian started on his qualifications in January 2020 and completed level three when Phil Wyburn of Total Auto Services took him on as an apprentice.

“I was lucky through Covid with the lock-down I managed to complete all the theory parts and get through it fairly quickly, with assessments online,” Ian says.

Ian has always been interested in cars and had worked on cars for years before deciding to get fully qualified.

He loves the challenge of fault finding and loves the broad range of work.

“We do all sorts of stuff here from newer turbo cars to old chevy vans and old Japanese Utes to hybrids, we do it all,” Ian says.

“As a mechanic you have to have a knowledge of all the different models.”

Phil is proud of Ian’s achievement as he completed his final level in record time.

I would probably go to somewhere that is not popular maybe the Cook Islands.

Sometime ago a gardener asked me what the strange looking growth of one of her roses was?

It turned out to be a Crown Gall which she treated and recently emailed me to say the treatment was successful and said what she had done to solve the problem; which I will share with you later on in this article.

Firstly lets look at what a Crown Gall is and what causes it.

Please note; much of the in formation below is from the Internet.

Crown gall is a plant disease caused by the soil-inhabiting bacterium, Agrobacterium tumefaciens.

The bacterium causes abnormal growths or galls on roots, twigs, and branches of euonymus and other shrubs primarily in the rose family.

The bacterium stimulates the rapid growth of plant cells that results in the galls.

This is interesting: Genetic engineering of plants was perfected by the bacterium named Agrobacterium tumefaciens, also called A. radiobacter, long before humans invented bio engineering.

The disease is called crown gall as it most often is found in the crown of plants.

Symptoms include roundish rough-surfaced galls (woody tumor like growths), several centimeters or more in diameter, usually at or near the soil line, on a graft site or bud union, or on roots and lower stems.

The galls are at first cream-colored or greenish and later turn brown or black.

Crown gall causes rough, woody, tumor-like galls to form on roots, trunks and occasionally branches of

many different trees and shrubs.

Galls can interrupt the flow of nutrients and water within the tree, reducing overall plant growth and vigor.

Crown gall infection is spread by movement of infested soil, by infected plant material, and via budding and grafting tools.

When buying new plants, inspect their roots, trunks, branches, and stems carefully for any galls.

If you already have a crown gall problem in your yard, stay away from planting roses, willows, poplars, and fruit trees, as these are the most susceptible to the disease.

Once crown galls are exposed, removing the gall and the bark tissue surrounding the gall is the most effective treatment currently available.

Treatments that kill or remove the bark surrounding the gall result in very good control.

Research has shown that careful surgery is very effective.

My email read: I just passed on your advice to another rose grower and realised that I never updated you on the progress of the affected rose!

I applied the undiluted liquid copper, and substituted the Terracin for potassium permanganate at the time.

I later applied the Mycorrcin (and Terracin much later on?).I’m pleased to say It made a full recovery and is in fact healthier than many of the surrounding roses.

Public money shouldn’t be funding a Mongrel Mob Chapter that has had several of its members arrested as part of an international drug and crime ring. The Human Rights Commissioner needs to personally pay back the $200 that was forked out from tax-payer’s pockets, Darroch Ball co-leader of Sensible Sentencing Trust says.

“No one in their right mind could possibly confuse the bone-deep stupidity of giving money over to a chapter of an organised crime group.”

Then take Wallys Liquid copper undiluted and add to it potassium permanganate about quarter to half a teaspoon (depending on how much copper you need to cover the clean wood). Mix the two together in a small container and paint over the wound for complete coverage.

Both these compounds are ideal for killing the gall. Leave for a period of time and rain will wash off the mix.

Then you can apply the undiluted Wallys Terracin which would be painted on to the exposed area.

The Terracin contains beneficial microbes which will inhabit the area and according to Jayne make your plant healthier than others in the area.

To change the subject a little to another problem that will increase with the rain and moisture this time of the year and that is moss, slime, liverworts, lichens and molds.

All of these can be effectively treated and controlled by Wallys Moss and Liverworts Control.

For moss and liverwort you mix at the rate of 50mils per litre of water and adjust your sprayer’s nozzle to make a bit of a jet and you jet it into the target plant.

For moss and liverwort control to be effective the product has to forced into the target plants otherwise if just sprayed likely nothing much will happen.

For slime algae and lichens you mix at 25mils per litre of water and just spray to run off (no need to jet it on).

You will notice that the problems will disappear over a period of about 10 to 14 days.

Back to basics in the outdoors Police are reminding people to follow basic safety advice when heading out into New Zealand’s back country this winter.

New Zealanders love to get outdoors – be it hunting, fishing, tramping, four-wheel driving, mountain biking or skiing.

With any outdoor activity there are risks involved, however there are a number of basic steps people can take to ensure they don’t become the subject of a Search and Rescue operation.

Tell someone what your plans are, including specific intentions about where you’re going and what time you’ll be back.

This will save valuable time in

On Saturday 3 July 2021, it was Premier into the NNCU shooting circle with some 1 Ulalei Pua’s turn to secure a win for the spectacular tips, and placing pressure on the Ulalei Netball Club. Despite starting with shooters and gaining rebounds from NNCU’s only six (6) players for most of the first missed shots. Ulalei Pua maintained their quarter, Pua’s skills and experience enabled composure to lead 42-30 at the end of the them to take a slight 15-14 lead at the end of third quarter.

NZ Rugby do Tonga no favours with thrashing You could be forgiven in thinking Tom Latham and Devon Conway had laid a good platform for the All Blacks on Saturday night.

The All Blacks 102-0 win over Tonga looked more like a cricket score and was not a good advertisement for international rugby.

The night was an embarrassment on many levels.

Scores between international teams should never get that lopsided in the modern game.

ion should be embarrassed and ashamed of the product they allowed to be put out onto Mt Smart Stadium.

Tickets from $50 upwards for that is not acceptable.

It is not on, Covid-19 or not.

Training runs had more intensity.

It looked like Manchester United versus a Sunday social team at Hagley Park.

That was not test rugby, nowhere near it.

My heart goes out to Tonga who had a challenging task just fielding a team.

Many of their players were club players based in New Zealand living out a dream of playing for their country against the greatest rugby entity on the planet.

However, what happened on Saturday does nothing to improve the game in the Pacific Islands.

defended the match after the fulltime whistle.

“I’d like to think we aren’t just going to focus on the scoreline and say this was a game that shouldn’t have happened, because for the Tongan people it was an important game, and it was equally important for us to go out and start what could be a long year.”

Sorry Ian, that sort of fixture is not up to scratch.

Another instalment of the North v South rivalry would have been

better than what we witnessed on the weekend.

It was just a chance for several All Blacks to pad their stats and for several Tongan players to live out a boyhood dream.

The All Blacks face Fiji in two tests starting this Saturday.

Hopefully, the Fijians can at least avoid a cricket score but they’re unlikely to offer up much resistance.

It is watered-down rugby when the market is oversaturated as it is.

Wainuiomata High School Netball Junior 2 win Wainuiomata High School’s Year 9/10 junior netball team came from behind to snatch a win against Chilton St James on Saturday 3 July 2021. Junior netball games are played at the Hutt Valley High School outdoor netball courts. Both teams started off well with some accurate shooting by GS Integra Smith and GA Shaelyn Kilburn. The score was tied 5-5 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Chilton St James picked up their game to take the lead 9-7 at half time.

Chilton St James increased their lead at the end of the 3rd quarter to 14-11.

In the final quarter, WHS GK Emily Hargraves showed her defensive skills with multiple intercepts, working well with C Russo TuatoAfoa and WA Kiera Soderholm to bring the ball down to the shooting

circle where shooters Shaelyn Kilburn and Alexa Buendia converted to points. The young team worked well together to claw back to even the score 15 all, and converting the final goal before the buzzer to steal win 16-15. “I think we played really well as a team, and positively supported each other throughout the game especially when we behind.

We thought we had lost the game until our umpire Sarah-Lee told us the result”, says captain Zaria Mitchell. “I was really pleased with the girls’ team spirit today. It’s the best I have seen them play as a team all season,” says manager Penny Hargraves.

Big win for reserves

The Reserves got a massive result to keep their hopes of promotion alive. Welcoming top of the table Island Bay to Richard Prouse, they knew a win would keep the pressure on and narrow the gap between them to just 2 points. In a very entertaining game, the score remained 0-0 until the 80th minute when Jarrod Smith connected with a sweet volley to make it 1-0. Some tough defending was needed but the lads managed to hold on to the lead and walk away with 3 points.

Staying at Richard Prouse and Halfbaked welcomed Stokes Valley in their Wellington 3 match.

Like the Reserves game, it stayed 0-0 until a late goal put our boys 1-0 ahead. However, unlike the Reserves, they were unable to hold on and Stokes Valley earned a draw in the dying minutes of the game as it finished 1-1.

Heading over the hill and the Undertakers were looking to maintain their winning streak against a tough Marist side. Adrian Stephenson made it 3 goals in 3 games, but it was not enough to help the side make it 3 wins in 3 games. They fell to a 5-2 defeat to end their run of consecutive wins.

The OC’s travelled to Happy Valley to face Brooklyn United and it was a tough day at the office again. Despite their best efforts, they unfortunately walked away empty handed.

Back in Wainui and Pacifica Originals hosted Tawa AFC in the 2:30 kick off and Dwight Agius was on the scoresheet again as he helped the side to a 2-0 win.

Also, at 2:30, our Central League side welcomed top of the table Miramar in what was always going to be a tough ask. Fraser Brown found the back of the net again, but it wasn’t enough as Miramar walked away big winners to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Sunday’s games for the Under 17’s and the Women’s first team were games they can learn from as they both fell to heavy defeats. Despite a strong start and an early lead for the Under 17’s, Stop Out finished strongly winning 5-1. While in the Women’s game, Ashley Porter saved her 3rd penalty in 3 weeks however it wasn’t enough to keep out Wellington United as they won 5-0.

The Fiddick’s and The Roundballs look to end the weekend of football on a high as they play in the Monday night fixtures.
