Passion takes flight

A 50 percent off coupon to Zealandia has sparked a passion for native birds and the eco sanctuary for artist Melissa Boardman Wilton-based Melissa walks the walk when it comes to her illustrations of native birds.

Her latest exhibition is titled ‘Drawn to Zealandia’ and is all about her personal connection to Zealandia and how much inspiration it gives her.

Melissa has been a regular at the sanctuary for more than a decade, spending countless hours in dense areas of the facility watching the birds.

She has also been monitoring a pair of New Zealand’s smallest bird, the titipounamu/rifleman on Te Ahumairangi Hill.

The pair left Zealandia and are currently nesting wild on the hill, which is very exciting and groundbreaking for Wellington.

and realised they were really endangered and it sparked the conservationist in me.

“I’ve been volunteering (at Zealandia) since 2019 and I just love it.

“At the time I was working in a boring job and I was looking for a hobby or a passion.

“It’s more than just taking photos of birds, it’s learning about them, watching their behaviours and working out why they do what they do.”

Melissa says each one of her illustrations highlights a personal encounter with each bird within Zealandia.

“I hope it inspires people to have their own wildlife encounters.”

The exhibition runs at Zealandia until the end of November with part of the proceeds going back to the facility.

“I feel we as Wellingtonians are very lucky to have a place like Zealandia on our doorsteps.

Royal NZ Ballet returns With much celebration, the Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) presents its 2022 season, comprising two glorious ‘story ballets’ and two dazzling programmes of shorter works. Expect the unexpected as highs, lows, fairytale endings and happy-ever-afters spill from the stage in every shade of the rainbow. Prior sprinkles a sparky, stylish twist on the classic tale, with a heroine who knows her own mind and a hero who follows his heart.

The Ryman Healthcare Season of Cinderella is presented in association with Orchestra Wellington, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. A recording by Orchestra Wellington will accompany performances in other centres.

Glenside Track officially gets underway

Work has started on the first part of the Glenside Reserve Track.

Wellington City Council walkways and reserves specialist Tim Harkness says the project will be completed in two phases.

“Work has started this week to build a walking loop track at Glenside Reserve,” he says.

“This track is being built in two sections, the first section which is under way is a 500m loop on the western boundary of the reserve.

Work on the first section is expected to take 6-8 weeks.

“Later next year we will extend the track another 700m along the northern boundary which will

create a 1.2km walk.”

Another key will be managing predators like possums and pest plants like Old Man’s Beard.

The Glenside Reserve has been in Council ownership since 1951 and it’s only been recently that it has been used for public recreation Glenside Progressive Association president, Claire Bibby says the proposed track will take people through some beautiful areas of the Glenside Reserves with a lot of native plants.

She says she is confident the track will be an asset for generations to come.

“The track will be an easy grade walk for people but will still have various lookout points from around

Claire says the track will continue to add to the appeal of the Halfway House and the Glenside Reserve as a whole.

“We are noticing more people are coming from outside the area and we think that we are now a destination for people to come

Claire says her organisation are still hopeful of getting council assistance to deal with predators like possums and pest plants like ivy in the track.

“I think this will be such an asset for our area and for the people looking for a nice walk.”

inbrief news Motorcycle crash in Johnsonville Police confirmed a person died following a crash between a motorcycle and a car on Moorefield Road in Johnsonville on Monday morning.

The crash was reported to Police just before 5am.

The person riding the motorcycle died at the scene.

Malvina Major staff rejoice at Govt migrant worker move Ryman Healthcare has welcomed the New Zealand Government’s rule changes that ends months of uncertainty for migrant workers.

Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi has t announced a one-off resident visa for up to 165,000 migrant workers – including 5000 health and aged care workers – so they can plan for the future.

Khandallah’s Malvina Major Retirement Village caregiver, Joan Lagman was ecstatic and relieved.

“After six years of feeling uncertain, finally I have the chance to apply for residency,” she said. Joan had been considering leaving New Zealand to live in Canada.

Village manager, Albie Calope added he was delighted to hear the news, “Our migrant caregivers and nurses make a positive contri-

bution to the village and bring unique culture and skills. This now gives them certainty.”

The 2021 Resident Visa creates a pathway to residence for workers, a streamlined application process, and the majority of applications will be granted within one year.

Ryman Healthcare Group Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the announcement ended uncertainty for several hundred essential healthcare workers who had worked so hard to care for Ryman residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pink Ribbon volunteers needed

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ is urgently seeking people in the Wellington region to volunteer for its Pink Ribbon Street Appeal next month.

Around 10,000 Pink Ribbon volunteers across the country will take to the streets on 29 and 30 October to collect donations for breast cancer research, education and patient support. But the appeal may be at risk of cancellation unless volunteer area coordinators are found there to oversee local collection sites.

Area coordinators manage a small team of collectors and are supplied with all materials required to look after their local sites. Jayme Lusty, a 35 year old mother of four from Porirua, is taking part in the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal for the third time.

She says volunteering means a lot to her: “I was only young when my mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer, and it returned three years later. When I was 20, I learnt I’d inherited the BRCA2 gene mutation and I recently had a preventative mastectomy to reduce my risk of developing breast cancer. Now, this appeal has a whole new level of meaning for me. I met a breast cancer survivor while I was collecting last year and hearing her story was such an inspiration. I hope that one day I can be someone else’s inspiration.”

Rangatahi voices to be centre stage at Youth Hub Hui Wellington City Council is developing a new Youth Hub in the central city, and is hosting a hui for the younger community to voice their views on what the space should look like.

The aim of the Youth Hub will be a safe indoor space dedicated to young people, so Council wants to understand what will make the site successful and useful to those who will use it.

The Youth Hub is another initiative of the Poneke Promise, a partnership already involving the City Council, hospitality and retail business, Police, City Mission and Regional Council, working together to make our central city look, feel and be safer, more inclusive and welcoming.

Mayor Andy Foster says the Youth Hub will create another place of positive, inclusive activity in our downtown, following Te Wahi Awhina, the Community Support Centre which opened in the Opera House building in May, and the new Community Centre space currently being fitted out at 107 Manners Street.

“This week, Councillors Foon, Day and I had the pleasure of visiting Commonspace, a temporary pop-up living space for the young and young at heart to come together to share the skills and interests they love, and enjoy good company and creativity.

We heard about the desire for a living space which sometimes is just not available in constrained flatting environments.

“It’s also clear that the Central Library is much missed as a place to be, and how much we are all looking forward to seeing it re-emerging as the City’s main indoor living room.

“This hui is an exciting opportunity for our young people to imagine and create this new space together, so it best meets their needs and aspirations for a safe, welcoming and inclusive space.”

Councillor Tamatha Paul is excited about the hui and sees it as an opportunity to give rangatahi real ownership of their space and

place in the city.

‘We’re keen to make sure young people’s voices are heard when it comes to the design and creation of the youth hub. By hosting an interactive, engaging hui in a relaxed and welcoming environment, we’re hoping to capture and explore our rangatahi’s hopes, needs and aspirations for the site.

“Young people experience our city differently, and this is our chance to understand that – the good, the bad, and the mediocre.

These are the kind of things we need to know if we’re to create a space where they feel safe and welcome in their city,” said Mayor Foster.

Councillor Jill Day, who will be helping facilitate the hui along with Councillor Paul, emphasises the hui is an opportunity to create an inclusive space for all rangatahi.

“We’re running focus groups leading up to the hui with our Pasifika, M ori, Rainbow and Accessiblity advisory groups, as well as with people from a refugee and migrant background, to ascertain the different needs, issues to address, and concerns and requirements for the space.

“Inclusivity is the beating heart of our city, and we want that to be reflected through the Youth Hub project. Ultimately, we want to create a space where everybody can feel a sense belonging, of whanaungatanga.

“One of the questions we’re asking is, what should it be called? Names are important because they tell us a story and connect us to our places. We want a name that reflects what the space means to our diverse community of rangatahi. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.”

The engagement period will end Friday 22 October, and work will start over the summer months with the Youth Hub expected to open in March 2022.

The Youth Hub Hui is being held at 49 Courtenay Place on Friday 15 October and will be a chance for young people to come and share their ideas on what the new space should be like.

Fishing season begins for keen anglers Thousands of anglers across the country headed out before dawn last week to start the 2021/22 sports fishing season.

The weather played its part, with fine weather for opening day across most of the country.

With Covid-19 restrictions, fishing has become a great way of dealing with the stress the restrictions cause and provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and change things up a little.

This year Fish & Game is saying, “let nature do its thing” Acting Chief Executive Dianna Taylor says’ “Anglers love getting out to connect with nature and escaping the stresses of

everyday life.”

Taylor says, “New Zealanders reconnected with the outdoors last year in greater numbers than ever before due to COVID-19. The lockdown has been harder for everyone this time around, so we are reminding kiwis of all the benefits of being in the outdoors. Fishing is one of those activities that lets you take a moment, appreciate the beauty of Aotearoa, and get some kai for the family”.

NIWA is predicting above-average temperatures and average or below rainfall till the end of November, which means there will be plenty of opportunity for fishing in the coming months.

The early period of the fishing season is an awesome time for fishing, the fish have put on condition after spawning, and with the warmer temperatures, fish are becoming more active and more receptive to taking a lure or fly.

There are loads of fishing opportunities throughout the country, with the “Park and Cast” section of the Fish & Game website listing areas for easy access with sustainable fisheries in every region for anglers of all skill levels.

The weather played its part in the Wellington region, with the rivers clearing nicely and providing lots of opportunity for Wellington region anglers.

Keen anglers have enjoyed a great start to the new fishing season.

Penelope Lawrence is free to enjoy a broad range of interests and activities from attending a weekly subject discussion at the School of Philosophy at Victoria University club to growing orchids, while living at Enliven’s Huntleigh Home.

“I can grow cymbidium orchids in my room here and I’m lucky enough to hitch a ride to Wellington Orchid Society meetings in Lower Hutt on a regular basis,” says Penelope.

The Hutt Valley is familiar territory for Penelope. Her career in cartography for Lands & Survey not only involved mapping Lower Hutt’s volcanic terrain for the New Zealand Soil Bureau it took her out to sea to chart the ocean floor sailing out from Seaview to Cape Palliser and Kaikoura.

“I remember recording the measurements via an echo sounder. I had to chart the depth every five minutes in order to create the maps used by the navy.”

Singers celebrate OCR Up? YIP! birthday despite delays Wellington’s Whakaahuru Singers are celebrating their seventh birthday this month, but due to Covid restrictions they’re not partying yet.

Whakaahuru means to warm, cherish or comfort and that is what these singers aim to do for the people they sing to. Their purpose is to comfort people near the end of life with soothing songs.

“We sing for people in palliative care wherever they are - in their own homes, in hospitals, hospices or rest homes”, says Sue Chamberlain, the current chairperson.

“We usually sing in small numbers (3 or 4) and our repertoire is very gentle to create a calm, soothing atmosphere.”

Research into the use of music in hospice and palliative care has consistently found that patients, family, and staff all benefit from the music, and often after only one session.

Music has been found to help decrease anxiety, agitation, and pain. It also helps patients to slow and deepen their breath. (reported in Psychology today 20/11/19) Ian Brewer, one of the founding members, says

Wellington’s Whakaahuru Singers will celebrated their seventh birthday this month despite some Covid-19 delays.

“Whakaahuru was established in Wellington in September 2014 and is based on the work of similar groups in the USA, Canada and Australia. This type of singing is sometimes called bedside singing. Whakaahuru has developed its repertoire to suit our context in Aotearoa, and it includes some beautiful waiata. We offer our singing free of charge throughout Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua.

Our 24 singers come from throughout the region.”

Sue says regular events are always a highlight.

“Normally we sing every month at Selwyn Sprott

Village in Karori and several other venues in Wellington and Lower Hutt.

“We also sing in private homes or at bedsides in other rest homes or hospitals whenever we are asked.

“And we meet every week to polish our repertoire, learn new songs and prepare ourselves for our special singing work. But none of this can happen until we get back to level 1, so our singing visits and our birthday party will have to wait a little longer.”

Hey Everyone! This week the Official Cash Rate (OCR) increased for the first time in 7 years, to attempt to curb rising inflation pressures and stop the economy from overheating. Although it is a small 0.25 increase, it does have an on flow effect, especially in the property market.

ANZ have already followed this OCR increase and increased some of their rates, some other banks have already increased their rates ahead of this announcement.

Keep in mind, a house is worth what a buyer is happy to pay, and what a buyer is happy to pay is directly linked to their affordability.

So, what might the property market do? s Budget Drop - When interest rates go up, this directly affects the buyer’s budget / how much they can afford to offer. If interest rates follow an upward trend, we will start to see a reduction in buyer interest. s Demand Shift to New Builds – There are still loads of benefits and incentives for buyers to purchase new builds. As affordability and budgets tighten, these incentives become a lot more attractive. Therefore, it is likely we will see the prices of new builds continue to climb. s ‘Foreign’ Interest – The new immigration / visa policy changes last week potentially is a gamechanger. By providing an easier pathway for people outside of NZ to gain the necessary paperwork to be able to live and purchaser properties in NZ will increase buyer demand. When buyers compare what they can buy overseas to what is available in NZ, they see a lot more value and are happier to pay a premium.

This trend may counter any negative effect rising rates may have on the local market. s Houses for Sale – There may be a lot of buyers who leveraged heavily when

interest rates were at 2%, and when they are due to review their mortgage terms and if the rate is over 3%, this may cause some owners to cash in all that capital gain and move somewhere cheaper. Number of houses for sale consistently sit at a very low level, so an increase in volume and stock would be healthy for the market.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Plant immunity: By Wally Richards Plants, just like ourselves, have built in protection against diseases though their immunity systems.

We build up our immunity naturally over the years by surviving disease attacks and by having a healthy nutritionally rich diet.

We, like plants, have pathogens and viruses in our bodies all the time but these are kept in check by our immune system and glands.

I have written a lot in the past on how to build the health of plants by building the health of the soil.

Having soil that is rich in humus, minerals, earth worms and soil life.

Even when we have the best soil on earth, plants can still catch a cold when they are placed into stress.

We can however increase the immune systems of plants by monthly sprays of Perkfection Supa for roses and other plants.

The active ingredient of Perkfection is ‘Phosphite ion’ or Phosphonic Acid. (Potassium ions are also present).

Perkfection is very safe to handle and spray and when used on food crops there is no withholding period other than your normal washing of produce before eating.

Perkfection is used extensively by commercial growers of vegetables DQG IUXLW DV LW¶V VDIH H൵ HFWLYH LQ prevention and control while not restrictive on exports of produce.

We have suggested Perkfection Supa for Roses and other plants as an alternative to more toxic sprays, for the assistance in recovery from/

or prevention of, the following problems, black spot, downy mildew, phytophthora root rot, botrytis, canker, heart rot, dampLQJ R൵ FURZQ URW OHDI EOLJKW VLOYHU leaf, late blight, collar rot, pink rot, brown rot, armillaria, and gummy stem rot.

Besides using Perkfection over your roses for the likes of black spot and downy mildew you can also use it as a spray over all your fruiting plants and trees including your strawberries.

It can be used also over your potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, beans, cucumbers etc, lawns, onions, pasVLRQ IUXLW FDXOLÀ RZHUV F\ELGLXP orchids and ornamental plants and vines. In fact there is no where you cannot use Perkfection to advantage.

Being ‘Synthetic Organic Phosphates, what you are doing is placing this valuable material onto the foliage of your plants where it is very readily absorbed and transferred through the whole of the plant.

7KLV IRUWL¿ HV WKH SODQW¶V FHOOV increases the plant’s immune system and makes your plants less susceptible to invading pathogens.

There is however a down side. As with any good thing, you can use too much and the recommendation is to use Perkfection at 4ml per litre of spray once a month for about six times in a season.

The reason is that, you can over load your plant with organic phosphates causing a clogging of the

cells and halting growth until the system clears.

If a plant has a problem, spray WKH ¿ UVW PRQWK ZLWK 3HUNIHFWLRQ at 7mls per litre.

For plants you wish to fortify use at 4ml per litre for two to three months.

Prevention is better than cure and by spraying your plants in the spring you give the greatest protection to leaves and fruit, autumn spray will give greatest protection to roots and tubers.

I have suggested that on the first of the month, spray your roses and other preferred plants

with Perkfection, MBL (Magic Botanic Liquid) and Mycorrcin.

Then 14 days later (15th) spray with Mycorrcin and MBL. What we are doing is boosting the plant’s immune system, supplying a large range of minerals and elements, feeding the benH¿ FLDO PLFUREHV WR LQFUHDVH WKHLU populations which also work to eliminate diseases.

If insect problems occur then include Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil with Wallys Super Pyrethrum added. All these sprays are compatible.

Wet weather diseases on citrus

and plants that do not like wet feet can be helped to recover with the use of Perkfection.

It will help stimulate new root development.

It would also be a good idea to clean up the rot in the roots with a soil drench of Terracin followed by a drench of Mycorrcin three weeks later.

Terracin is a natural product that suppresses pathogens in the soil DOORZLQJ WKH EHQH¿ FLDO PLFUREHV to increase which means there is D ¿ JKW IRU IRRG UHVRXUFHV DQG WKH QRZ ODUJH QXPEHUV RI EHQH¿ FLDO microbes win.

For over 40 years, Summer City has been entertaining locals and visitors alike with a huge variety of free events spread across the warmer months of the year.

NRL final delivers on pre-match hype The NRL grand final was a fitting end to a terrific season.

Penrith outlasted South Sydney 14-12 in an absorbingly physical contest which earned the men from the Blue Mountains their third title and first since 2003.

While not a free-flowing exhibition of league, it was a far superior product to either Rugby Championship encounter just 24 hours earlier.

Rugby league may be the blue collar sport but there is little argument that it produces the most

consistently entertaining on-field product between both codes.

South Sydney did not get the bounce of the ball during the final.

It felt like all the 50-50 plays and calls went against them.

Yet for a team which conceded 50 points twice during the campaign, their defence was heroic at times.

Penrith had lost their attacking flair late in the season, potentially due to injuries to key players late in the regular season.

However, like most champion teams, their defence held firm at the key times and proved the catalyst for their grand final triumph.

In their final 160 minutes of 2021, Ivan Cleary’s men conceded just 18 points in the most pressure-packed encounters of the season.

Even with a misfiring attack, they were able to go one better than their efforts from 12 months prior.

Special mention must go to Wayne Bennett.

The super-coach lost just his

third final in nine trips to the decider since 1987.

At times, the Rabbitohs looked completely hopeless during 2021 but Bennett built them into deserving finalists by the end of the campaign.

Their scintillating attack was never doubted but it was the late season steel in defence which transformed them into title contenders.

Bennett’s plans for next year are uncertain and at the age of 71 he has nothing to prove but he is bound to

be in demand.

Bennett is the ultimate puppeteer in the sense he knows how to get the best out of each of his players regardless of experience level or talent factor.

It’s also a timely reminder than Ivan Cleary coached the New Zealand Warriors to a grand final in 2011 and was then promptly sacked from the club.

I am sure that leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of some Kiwi league fans.

Will Anthony is Virginia-bound

Talented Johnsonville runner Will Anthony has signed on for a scholarship at the University of Virginia which will start next year.

“It’s a relief,” he says. It’s a pretty exciting process but it was hard to make the choice.

“It started when Mum and Dad signed me up for Olympic when I was 8 and I didn’t want to do it but it’s been only the past two to three years where I considered going overseas with it.”

The 18-year-old is the New Zealand Under-20 cross country champion He will link up with fellow

Olympic Harriers runner Toby Gualter.

“My decision on where to go came down to gut feel.

“All the institutions I looked at were very strong academically as well as with the NCAA sports.

“I had zoom calls with coaches, professors and academic advisors and did online campus tours.

“It’s not the same as being able to go and have a look around but I got an accurate picture.”

Will says longtime coach Alistair Leslie, who has coached many athletes to scholarships, was thrilled for him.

“It’s a bit sad that it’s the end of

an era because that’s where my running really took off, going to him but I know we’ll maintain a connection.

Longtime coach Alistair Leslie says Will deserves the opportunity.

“Will has been a pleasure to coach and he has the ability to go as far as he wants to in the sport.”

Alistair says Will’s mental strength and ability to listen, ask questions and absorb information will serve him well.

He says he has the ability to become an Olympic athlete if that is the path he chooses.

Will will head to Virginia in July before study starts in August.

He hopes to qualify for the World Under 20 Track and Field Championships in Columbia in July.

He will go straight into the cross country season before the track season occurs.

Now he has finished high school, he can up his training from 40km a week to 60 to 70km under Alistair’s watchful eye.

Will says he is excited to get to Virginia to train with like-minded athletes.

“When I look back on my journey it’s surreal because you live in the moment.

“I’m excited for the opportunity.”

Tennis season underway Johnsonville graded fours prove close contests with junior tournament An early season l combined club junior tournament between Karori United, Talavera Tennis Club, and Karori Lawn Tennis Club has started the summer season off strongly.

In the Gold Division, the singles winner was Ethan Pryor who beat Karori United teammate Nathan Storey in the final.

The doubles winners were Alice and Elizabeth Whitaker from Talavera, with runners-up Ben Birkett and Nathan Storey from Karori United.

In the Silver Division, the singles winner was Karori United’s Oli Hercus who beat clubmate Wilder Campbell in the decider.

The doubles winners were Karori United’s Silas Campbell and Caleb Jourdain.

The runners-up were Zara Robertson and Holly White from Talavera In the Bronze Division, the singles champion was Caleb Jourdain, with James Whitaker the runner up.

The Perseverance Award went to Karori United’s Willliam Reiterer.

The Spirit of Tennis and Enthusiasm Award went to Elsa Pryor from Karori United.

The Longest Rally Award went to Max Mitchell and Robbie Fear v Alice and Elizabeth Whitaker.

Karori United Tennis Club dominated a preseason junior tournament which also involved Talavera Tennis Club and Karori Lawn Tennis Club.

The Johnsonville women’s and men’s graded events at the Johnsonville Bowling Club over the weekend both proved to be close contests Usually a graded fours event, this competition was played today with five triples and one fours team over three rounds of 14 ends.

Teams were drawn and graded from the entries on the board.

The games were played in cool and changeable wind conditions, with scrim down, making accurate bowls difficult.

After two rounds, there were two teams with two wins – Lui Hare, Janet Nehemia and Christine Hyett; and June Wairau, Kay Martin and Gill Oliver. Both these teams won their third games with Lui, Janet and Christine winning on their better differential.

Ten teams played the men’s graded fours for the McLauchlin and O’More Memorial Trophy, first played for in the 1972/73 season, although the Graded Fours date back further than that.

Aided by a good influx of new players, this was the healthiest number of teams in this event for some years.

The competition was played over four rounds of

10 ends.

After two rounds, teams skipped by Bruce Henderson, Brent Stubbins, and Wayne Coleman each had two wins but after the third round only Bruce’s team remained unbeaten and went on to win with a clean sweep of four wins.

The victorious team was Bruce Henderson, Isi Taito, Neil Hargreaves and Andrew Barclay.
