‘Girl Dad’ set for 115km walk for Onslow Gymnastics Continued from page 1.

After more than 50 years based at Onslow College, there is no longer time or space for the club and it has been looking for a new home for the past 12 months.

Alastair’s wife is on the committee while his daughter is a gymnast at the club.

“Being a Girl Dad, you just dive into everything your kid does.”

There are now two options and Alastair says the time is right for him to do his bit.

“During the lockdown I couldn’t go to the gym, so I just got back into walking which I had got out of the habit of.

“When you have young kids, it’s hard to say to the wife that you’re going to go for a six hour walk.

“Obviously there’s been a bit of stress around finding a new location so I thought I could just walk.

“The thing with fundraising is that you have to make a fool of yourself or do something people think is ridiculous to try to stand out.

“I had done 100km before so I thought maybe I could do 115km.”

Alastair says he has been training for the past six months waiting for the right time.

Alastair Hogg is set to walk 115km to visit seven gyms in 27 hours to raise funds for Onslow Gymnastics.

“I wanted to do it when the club had a couple of solid options in the pipeline which they now have.”

Alastair has raised more than $4000 so far.

“I’ve been chuffed with the response,” he says. “I did have a mild panic attack once we launched it knowing that I couldn’t back out.

“I know it’s going to hurt but it will be worth it.

“I do like the mental challenge of knowing it hurts but just push-

ing through.

“The lack of sleep is the biggest issue especially at times when your body is usually asleep so I’ve been getting up at 3am and going for walks and sorting out my light situations.”

Alastair says food can be a bit more fun on his journey.

“If you’re walking normally you burn 300 calories so after 27 to 28 hours you’ll burn through 8000 calories which is a lot of meals.

“Muesli bars, pies from the

service station, they all help.”

Alastair says he will use three pairs of shoes and up to 10 pairs of socks for “foot maintenance”.

“Blisters are your worst nightmare on a thing like this.”

He says the club deserves the support.

“The Club is run by volunteers and they’re all very passionate and I’m just trying to do my bit.

Bus looks for new driver

Every second Monday for the past eight years, Heuchan Hobbs has driven a small group of people to various places in the Wellington region.

Hobbs is a volunteer driver with Karori Community Bus, a service that allows Karori residents to travel distances they may not be able to go on their own.

Now, organisers are looking for a new driver to join Hobbs and his fellow drivers once a month.

Karori Community Bus was started 29 years ago, when a group of locals decided the suburb needed a bus for community usage.

Bus convener Jane Campbell says that the vehicle was initially used to give rides home for pub goers.

“It was something for the community to use, to get people back home who were homebound, or for groups who wanted to get out and do things,” Campbell says.

“A way of getting out.”

The bus is sponsored by St John’s Opportunity Shop and the Lion’s Foundation.

primary schools, and local resthomes all use the bus, allowing them to travel long distances for five to eight dollars per person.

“We help out with a rest home by taking some of the residents out for a drive. Every week we have at least two permanent bookings.

Most of the time the van is there for community to use.”

A popular service the vehicle provides is its weekly shopping trips, where locals can be picked up and driven to shopping centres in Lower Hutt, Porirua, and Paraparaumu. Each location is chosen based on suggestions given through the local community centre.

“It’s a nice way for them to do their shopping easily and get dropped at the door,” Jane says.

“It’s a social time. Time to catch up every Monday, have a coffee and get something to eat with their friends.

“Some just go for the drive.”

Retirees Liz Hinkly and Ann Eure are two friends who take the bus most Mondays for its weekly shopping trip. The two friends would “absolutely” recommend the service. During their weekly

Jane is looking for a driver who is available to do one drive a month for Good Companions. The volunteer would collect people and take them to St Teresa’s Church for lunch, dropping them home afterwards.

“It’s an interesting job,” she says.

“It needs to be someone who really likes to work with people, and is quite happy to be available to do the job.”

Jane says she has received some lovely feedback from the people who use the bus.

“Most have thoroughly enjoyed it. The difficulty is a lot of groups don’t realise it’s there.”

JCA to host longterm plan meeting The Johnsonville Community Association is hosting an open Q&A session with the Greater Wellington Regional Council Pōneke/Wellington Councillors on the Long Term Plan 2021-2031.

The meeting will be held next Thursday at Johnsonville’s new Community Collective Hub at 7.30pm.

Every three years, GWRC updates its Long Term Plan. This outlines what they will do over the next ten years, how much it will cost, and who will pay for it.

Public consultation on the Long Term Plan is open from now until 2 May 2021.

Consultation now open on Council’s 10-Year Plan Wellington Mayor Andy Foster is delighted that the draft 202131 Long-term Plan is out for consultation.

“This draft is ambitious, and it centres on the much-needed investment in our infrastructure that our city has been crying out for, and on solving resilience issues,” he explains.

“It is investment we need to underpin a modern, dynamic, creative, sustainable city.

“The capital programme is our largest to date, representing a $400 million greater investment than our last Long-term Plan, and this in turn will increase Council debt levels. This does not include the additional $580 million off-balance sheet responses for funding sludge treatment and city housing.

“We are proposing to lift our debt limit from the current 175% of debt to revenue to 225%. We consider this a prudent level because we must maintain bor-

rowing headroom for known but currently unbudgeted investment needs, and for events that are unexpected, such as an earthquake or pandemic.”

This plan sets the direction for the next 10 years, outlines what will be invested in, how much it may cost and how it will be funded. It provides guidance on how Council will make Wellington an even better place to live, work, play and visit as we go into the future.

Meeting the preferred options in the plan will require an average rates increase of 13.5 percent in the first year, and an average of 9.9 percent over the first three years. This equates to an average rates increase of 5.3 per cent after growth across the 10 years of the plan.

The last Catholic Mass at Wellington’s historic St Gerard’s Church will be celebrated on Pentecost Sunday May 23, ending 113 years of solemn services at the capital landmark above Oriental Bay. The Catholic Archbishop of Wellington, Cardinal John Dew, will celebrate the final Mass on behalf of the lay Catholic missionary group, the Institute for World Evangelisation-ICPE Mission, which acquired St Gerard’s in 1993 from the Redemptorists order.

St Gerard’s Church was built for the Redemptorists – the Catholic Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer – in 1908, with the Monastery completed in 1932. By

the late 1980s, the buildings were too big for the Redemptorists’ needs, leading to the ICPE Mission taking the site over for its New Zealand missionary work.

ICPE Mission’s New Zealand Director, Silvana Abela, says the buildings were yellow-stickered after the Christchurch earthquakes. Although the monastery, completed after the Napier earthquake, was built with some reinforcements, the church was not.

A substantial sum of money was needed for the earthquakestrengthening of both buildings, and several attempts to find such sums had failed. The church is now closing because of safety concerns.

Karori Event Centre takes shape Progress continues to be made towards the completion of key elements of the Karori Event Centre.

The Karori Community Hall Trust and trustees continue to be grateful to the local pub and eatery the Pickle Jar for their ongoing support of the Karori Event Centre.

A stitch in time as Rose continues quilting Having time on her hands and a spectacular collection of fabrics, Huntleigh Home resident Rose Greenman continues to enjoy quilting.

“I began quilting in the 1950’s and continued along with other interests,” she says. “Since moving into the Eliven Home in Karori I have happily continued patchwork and quilting.”

A former librarian, Rose has amassed her own personal library of fabric from op shops and as she

says, “scrounging from relatives”.

Rose loves the patterns from the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s.

“I’m fond of the older fabric designs and as I’m a bit of a purist, I prefer cotton,” she says. “Although I have been known to slip in some rayon here and there if it’s pretty and works in the design. Rayon is a wood-based natural fabric too, even though it is man-made.”

Rose is very much aware of the risks of using steel pins to hold the three layers of the quilt together,

which she stitches by hand.

“I use anodized safety pins which don’t rust,” she says.

A large flower basket patterned quilt that Rose made took around two years to complete and is based on a traditional block pattern which Rose modified to make the handles more elaborate.

“I enjoy the mathematical challenges of arranging different shapes and deciding colour placement,” she says.

“I come to Rose when I need help with something I’m writing. She always makes sure there are no typos, and it is all grammatically correct.”

Trans-Tasman Bubble? YIP! Hey Everyone! Hope you enjoyed the long weekend and didn’t get blown away by the wind. We had a jam-packed weekend of appointments with serious buyers keen to buy and potential sellers wanting to know more about the market trends. Since Covid-19 we have seen a gradual increase of buyers who do not reside in Wellington aka ‘Foreign Buyers’. With Team YIP we have noticed that almost 1 in 4 houses are now sold to someone that is not a Wellington local. To put that into perspective, during the last property boom where the media were going on and on about ‘foreign buyers’ (note; even then, most of those buyers were NZ residents coming home), only 19% of our sales were to non-local people. So, this increase of buyers from out-of-town / overseas coming to Wellington is interesting.

How could this trend and the Trans-Tasman bubble affect the market? s 0RICE Buyers from out of New Zealand come with a higher perception of value. Let’s say they come from Sydney, a $1m house here may have costed them $2m in Sydney, so they are happier to pay a premium for the property – as it presents excellent value compared to what they are used to. Also, these buyers coming back to NZ are unlikely to have somewhere permanent to stay, so they have high motivation to secure a property as well. Both pushing them into securing properties at premium prices. s -IGRATION /54 OF .: One of the key issues with our property problem is that everyone is coming back to NZ but no one is leaving, creating a spike in demand (reducing supply). In the past we would see more people moving to AUS than the other way around, it will be very interesting to see if this trend resumes with the bubble. When people leave

New Zealand, it reduces buyer/rental demand, and they will also vacate a rental or a property for sale when leaving. In conversations I’ve had in the last 1-2 days, the general feel is that no one is rushing to leave NZ any time soon, even to visit, so we will wait and see on this one. s "UYER 7EALTH The bubble is opened under political and economical pressure, it is the idea that this bubble will increase tourism and spend in the economy - If we assume this to be true, and that opening the bubble won’t cause more covid related issues, then we should see more jobs, and even more confidence coming into the market. This will bolster buyer’s appetite for property and increase value / demand.

Community funding sought for Mary Potter’s new North Wellington/Porirua base The newly renovated Te Whare RƗnui, Mary Potter Hospice community base in RƗnui Heights, Porirua needs public donations to help complete the project.

The organisation has raised $1,064,688 toward this building, and the main work has been completed.

However, there is a need to raise another $100,000 so the fit-out can be finished.

From Te Whare RƗnui, Mary Potter Hospice will provide care and support to people with terminal and life-limiting illnesses and their whƗnau. This care will

mainly be provided in the patient’s own home.

Last year 234 patients were referred to the Hospice’s North Wellington/ Porirua service and this number is expected to rise significantly as the population ages and increases.

The development of Te Whare RƗnui will enable the organisation to better meet the growing and diverse needs of people in this area facing a terminal illness.

Te Whare RƗnui will be a centre for clinical services, delivered by a specialist

multidisciplinary team of palliative care doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, counsellors and other therapists.

Te Whare RƗQui’s facilities will also be used for specialist palliative care outpatient appointments with doctors and a community space for patients, whƗnau and carers to connect.

Johnsonville Hawks ready to soar

New Johnsonville Hawks head coach Jason Adamson hopes a renewed emphasis on culture can continue his team’s resurgence in the Swindale Shield which begins on Saturday.

Johnsonville will host Paremata-Plimmerton at Helston Park in round one.

Johnsonville finished with two wins out of 13 games last year to finish 11th out of 14 teams It was a marked improvement on the past two seasons where wins were a rarity.

Jason will be supported by last year’s coaching duo of Roy Kinikinilau and Ben Fisher as well as Wes Klopper.

There will also be a new captain with fullback Andy Ellis taking charge with prop Ha’amea Ahio named vice captain following the departure of former captain PJ Sheck in the offseason to Tawa.

Ivan Vaisagote (Ories), Seremia Bai (Auckland), Silao Sila (Australia) and Billy Bryce (Australia) have also departed.

New recruits include Aukuso Tuitama (Ories), Tevita Falekalala (Wellington), Newress Fotuali’i (Horo-Kap), Aaron Fawkes (Newlands), Knox Tuinasau (Paraparaumu Coll) and Eben Claassens (South Africa).

Jason says intent and desire from the players was important.

“We’ve been trying to create a bit of a culture and enjoyment.

“The mindset has been quite good from the guys who have been turning up to preseason training because there has been a casual approach which hasn’t worked,” Jason says.

“Roy and Ben put in some good processes last year and that’s what drew me to the role.

“We’ve done a lot of work around belief and

dictating what we want to do rather than being dictated to by our opposition.

“Last year in reviewing the games, it was the small moments which proved costly and undid a lot of good work so if we can tidy that up we’ll go better.

He praised his team’s improvement at scrum and line out time during their preseason fixtures.

Jason says depth could be an issue if injuries strike but the squad had looked at injury prevention measures.

Jason says Andy has plenty of experience to lead and he is a player who sets the tone for the whole team.

Jason says a successful season would be defined on making a difference on and off the field.

“We had two wins last year and it would be great to double or even triple that but if we give back to our community and play competitive rugby, that’d be great,” he says.

Johnsonville dominate Easter 2-4-2 tournament It may or may not be history – but it’s certainly remarkable – all four finalists in the Centre Easter 2-4-2 Pairs at Wainuiomata were Johnsonville teams.

In the men’s final Ross Gillett and Wayne Coleman met Rob Ashton and Brent Stubbins.

In the women’s, Fiona Alexander and Janet Nehemia met June Wairau and Merani Davis.

Both men’s teams won their semi-final games comfortably.

However, the women had to survive tight

games to make it through – both against teams from Naenae. Fiona and Janet prevailed 16-15 over Alieta Vula and Rozanna Muriwai; and June and Merani edged out Wendy Mackie and Sharon Ritchie 14-13 on an extra end, in which the strong wind moved the jack, so that it had to be re-positioned by the umpire.

The extremely testing conditions continued throughout the finals.

In the women’s game Janet and Fiona were able to hold off June and Merani in another tight finish to take it 18-16.

After a four-hour tense tussle, Rob and Brent needed a five on the last to force an extra end - but managed just a four, the final score being 17-16 to Ross and Wayne.

This is just Fiona’s third year, and her first Centre title and with this win, Janet qualifies for her second Gold Star.

Other performances of note in this event were – Grant Wakefield and Ian Franklin, Gill Oliver and Tannith Potgieter, and Paula Meredith and Kay Martin, all reached the quarter finals.

Cricket a hard, but must watch The international summer of cricket has come to an end and the future looks bright for the Black Caps.

The Black Caps won every home series and swept aside the West Indies, Pakistan and Bangladesh in all formats in dominant fashion and overcame a gritty Australia in a fun T20 series.

It was a big run-scoring summer for Henry Nicholls and Kane Williamson, a return to the good graces of fans for Martin Guptill and the emergence of Kyle Jamie-

son and Devon Conway.

Sceptics can say the touring opposition have been, on a whole, poor which is a fair point.

The West Indies could not catch a cold, the Pakistani’s imploded time after time and Bangladesh were over-matched in all forms.

Even the Aussies did not send their strongest T20 team.

However, people could do well to remember this is the longest and most golden period of New Zealand cricket in our history.

The team is almost unbeatable

at home and far from a pushover on the road.

The team has depth.

World class batting, bowling and fielding and multiple guys waiting in the wings who can do a job.

The TAB currently has the Black Caps as $2.15 outsiders to beat India in the World Test Championship final against India at Southampton.

That’s good money for a team which should thrive in the swinging English conditions.

It’s hard to know whether mov-

ing broadcasting rights to Spark has been a success. New Zealand Cricket won’t release the figures of who has purchased a subscription, however I’d hazard a guess and say numbers have not been great.

People don’t like change and the older generation struggles to understand how an app works.

For me, Spark’s coverage has been passable but only just.

The commentary needs more credibility and everyone needs more training to create a more polished and professional product.

Yes, it’s season one but Spark has a lot of work to do to sharpen their content.

Regardless, if you love cricket, the $75 cost of three months of cricket is well worth it to see some of our best cricket player’s in our history do their thing.

The World Test Championship final in the middle of June will be compelling viewing, if you can handle the moonlight hours.

This team is special and this could be their best platform to show it.

North Wellington lose nine-goal thriller

Good Friday lived up to its name for a number of teams in the Men’s Central League but not everybody’s hot cross buns tasted so nicely after round two of the competition played out.

North Wellington FC were on the coach at 8am for the longest road trip of their season to face Napier City Rovers at Park Island. By 5pm that same day, the result was hard to swallow for the Johnsonville based side as they found themselves on the wrong end of a nine goal thriller with Rovers taking out the match 5-4. The match was a spectacle and then some for the neutral observers, but not one to enjoy for either coach.

The travelling supporters have had to book themselves in for group therapy as they struggled to come to terms with so many goals, two penalties (one retaken) a red card and guilt edge opportunities that their strikers didn’t capitalise on..

The first 10 minutes saw North Wellington look structured and in

control but this didn’t last long with sloppy possession allowing Napier to ease into the game. Napier would go on to have two penalties awarded in the 12th and 20th minutes, scoring both of these and with the second one having to be retaken after an encroachment by the Goal keeper.

Cameron Mackenzie who has recently moved across from Stop Out had another great game, clawing North Wellington back in the 23rd minute.

Already the game had a feeling that it could be a goal fest.

Napier settled after conceding and controlled the remainder of the first half scoring two more goals in the 37th and a great goal by Zac Masden in the 43rd minute giving them a 4-1 lead just before half time. North Wellington had one last opportunity of hope in the first half with a free kick in the 45th minute on the apex of the box. Gavin Hoy took charge on his return to Napier afer recently joining North Wellington and he calmly curled the ball around the wall and in to the top corner, reducing the deficit at the break to 4-2. It was time

for everyone from players, officials, staff and fans to breathe and try and digest what they were seeing.

Scoring a goal right before half time is always a boost to confidence and the next 20 mintues would shape the remainder of the game. That was the theory anyway.

North Wellington came out in the second half much stronger and more structured, pressing and causing Napier to make mistakes. Cory Vickers and Max Batchelor both scored for Norths, bringing the score line level at 4-4 with 20 minutes remaining in the game. There were chances a plenty for North Wellington to score and on any other day they would have.

The final goal however was scored

by Napier in the 78th minute after a defensive collision taking out two North Wellington players, allowing Napier to have a clear run on goal.

Ben Wade would take his chance and make it 5-4. The final 10 minutes were chaos with a red card to Napier, yellow cards to both sides, injuries, substitutions - but no further goals with the end result in the record books

at 5-4 to Napier City Rovers.

It was a far more sedate affair at Wakefield Park with Wellington Olympic doing enough for their first win with a 1 nil victory over Wairarapa United. Waterside Karori also snared all 3 points with a 2-1 win at home over Wainuiomata. Miramar Rangers did nothing to suggest that they wouldn’t be a top three contender with a solid 4-1 win away to their close rivals, Western Suburbs. Petone couldn’t make the most of home advantage losing 5-1 to Lower Hutt.

The North Wellington Men’s Premier side did enough for a 1 all draw against newly promoted Island Bay. The two sides effectively cancelled each other out with Norths stronger in the first half and Island Bay finishing the match in menacing fashion.

It was all smiles though for the Inn Keeper North Wellington Women’s Premier team who won 4-0 over Petone to clinch the preseason Kelly Cup Bowl final. The overall winner of the Cup was Wellington United with a 4-3 victory over Palmerston North Marist in extra time.
