The building of the homes is the first private development in New Zealand dedicated to getting first home buyers on the property ladder.

Located at the junction of Moores Valley Road and Hair Street in Wainuiomata, it will include 50 new homes, 41 of which were set aside for first home buyers.

Ten of the homes in the development were up for tender to cover the expected cost escalation from now to completion, so that, they do not pass the cost

increment to first home buyers.

Adrian says the project started in 2018 when he approached Hutt South MP Ginny Andersen with his plan.

“Ginny Andersen believed in us and said lets do it,” Adrian says.

With 50 shovels on site for the largest sod-turning event in the country Ginny says the shovels represent what underpins the whole ethos of the project, “ that’s about putting people first and including people right from the word go.”

A new way of managing COVID-19 I know many people in Wainuiomata are looking forward to a way of life that feels a bit more normal. Our shift into the Orange setting of the new COVID-19 Protection Framework means that with vaccine passes, we can safely enjoy all the great things our community has to offer.

The framework, also known as the traffic light system, is our new way of managing COVID-19, and it’s designed to keep Kiwis safe as we carefully reopen.

Our plan will keep New Zealanders safe, while ensuring we can enjoy summer with fewer disruptions and more certainty.

Businesses can safely operate, big events can go ahead, and people can plan ahead with confidence, because our high vaccination rates mean lockdowns are no longer our main line of defence against COVID. Across all settings of the new framework, vaccine passes are a key part of our plan.

They’ll ensure our communities, workplaces and events are safe, adding an extra layer of protection for people who can’t be vaccinated, like young children.

At Orange, vaccine passes mean we can return to a more normal way of life. Because of the protection the vaccine provides, restrictions like being seated and separated or limiting the number of people able to enter are no longer required in many places, if all customers and staff are fully vaccinated.

We’ll still need to keep up those important health behaviours like scanning in wherever we go and wearing face coverings when we’re

out and about, but the vaccine pass allows us to do more safely.

Adrian says what is also special about the project is the relationship with mana whenua which has been an important one. Care of people, the environment and each other is a key Kaupapa in this project.

My Vaccine Pass to be required Most Hutt City Council community facilities will require visitors to show their My Vaccine Pass as the city moves into the new COVID-19 Protection Framework.

This will affect users of Council’s pools, gyms, libraries, museums, and hubs.

The Government has announced that Lower Hutt, and the rest of the Wellington Region, will enter the traffic light-based framework at the Orange level.

Hutt City Council Chief Executive Jo Miller says Council’s approach is about keeping staff and the community safe, and showing leadership in limiting the spread of COVID-19.

Those under the age of 12 will not be required to present a My Vaccine Pass, as this age group is not currently eligible for vaccination.

“Most people in our city will be able to continue to use our community facilities as normal, given that 93 per cent of those eligible in Lower Hutt have received their first dose and 87 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Jo Miller says that Council offers a range of online services which will continue to be available to the community.

“Since the first COVID-19 lockdown, and in fact before that, Council has significantly invested in our online offerings.

This means people can access a range of online library services including eBooks, films, online learning services, and our Baby Bounce & Rhyme sessions. We are also developing a contactless service

for some of our library collections, and I expect we can share more information on that soon.”

inbrief news Best value chips Consumer NZ recruited 22 chip lovers from across the country to buy and weigh a scoop of chips, finding there are differences in the value.

The survey found the best value scoop is at Moerewa Takeaways in Northland with one scoop costing $3.00 and weighed over half a kilo.

The average price of a scoop was $3.59, and the cost varied from $2.50 to $4.60.

An average scoop of chips weighed 365g. Again, there were some starch contrasts – the lightest was 230g and the heaviest more than twice that at 510g.

The most expensive scoops were found in Auckland and Tasman. Both regions had an average cost of $1.19 per 100g.

Pataka Kai was created out of Covid when it was realised there was a real ongoing need in the

community for a food bank to help support those in need not only in difficult times but all the time.

Added a year ago was the Pataka Kai Maara, garden, which is already helping supply food to the Pataka and a new training kitchen is also in the pipeline.

Free Metlink services Metlink is offering free travel to all passengers travelling on all bus and train services on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Bus passengers can tag on and off with their Snapper at no cost. Those visiting or without a Snapper card simply need to let the driver know where they’re going and will be given a $0 ticket.

Those travelling on the Johnsonville line as part of the Snapper on Rail trial can also tag on and off without being charged.

Train passengers travelling on any other line can simply board and ride for free.

Both Christmas Eve train and

bus services will run to their usual weekday timetables.

On Christmas Day bus services will run to a standard Sunday timetable in Wellington City, Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kapiti, and the Route 200 in the Wairarapa to a special timetable.

On New Year’s Eve bus services will run to a standard Saturday timetable in Wellington City, Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kapiti and to a special timetable in the Wairarapa.

On Christmas Day train services on the Johnsonville and Hutt Valley lines will run to standard Sunday timetables.

There will be no Melling or

Wairarapa Line services. The Kapiti Line will be replaced by bus.

On New Year’s Eve, train services on the Johnsonville, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa lines will run to standard Saturday timetables. The Melling Line will run hourly from 6:00am to 6:00pm. The Kapiti Line will be replaced by bus.

Sunscreen test In Consumer NZ’s first round of sunscreen testing for summer, six products met their SPF and broad-spectrum label claims. Three products didn’t meet their claimed SPF protection – all repeat offenders from last year. Two of the three also didn’t meet broadspectrum requirements.

Woburn Home’s recreation team pulled out all the stops for its light and colour themed annual wearable arts show.

One hundred-year-old Woburn Home resident Betty Illsley wowed the crowd in an eye-catching outfit decorated with hundreds of milk bottle caps which were saved up and donated by the Z Energy station on Hutt Road.

Residents and staff were treated to an impressive parade of specially designed and created garments which celebrated dance, favourite activities and natural elements including flowers, butterflies, and birds.

The model’s personalities were conveyed in their attire and each garment had a title which echoed

the music accompanying them on the catwalk, including ‘Here comes the Sun,’ ‘Celebration’, ‘How Deep Is Your Love,’ and ‘Respect’.

Modelled by residents in spectacular fashion the garments were made of a variety of upcycled materials such as bottle caps, cardboard rolls, feathers, and ribbons.

New Woburn Home manager Ogubuike Inmpey commended the Woburn Home team for all their efforts.

“Special recognition goes to the whole team especially recreation officer Aynur Daymond for her creative ideas and coordination and resident Hazel’s daughter Lorena Crombie for making and donating most of the costumes,” says Ogubuike.

inbrief news Safe staffing must be mandatory Workers at aged care home and hospitals across Aotearoa New Zealand will take action at their workplaces and at Parliament this December in the fight to win mandatory safe staffing.

On 9 December, union members from E tū and NZNO, supported by national seniors network, Grey Power, plan to present a parliamentary petition and an open letter with almost 7000 signatures, calling for safe staffing levels to become mandatory across the sector.

E tū Community Support Services Industry Council Convenor and aged care worker Marianne Bishop says workers feel incredibly stretched and frustrated due to low staffing numbers, and they aren’t able to provide the level of care they’d like – an issue that has only been compounded during the Covid crisis.

New LGBTQIA bookstore Alphabet Book Club is a new female-led, family-owned, queer, independent online bookstore in Aotearoa - New Zealand, selling books and products with positive LGBTQIA+ representation.

They believe that books are for everyone and all Kiwis should be able to see themselves represented in books without paying for excessive shipping, waiting for months, and supporting large international conglomerates.

On Tuesday 7 December, Alphabet Book Club launched The Alphabet Book Club Book Box, a monthly subscription that includes a Young Adult novel and several themed gifts that relate to the story. The boxes will be sent out in the first week of every month and at the end of each month.

Getting into the Christmas spirit and getting out and about 80-year-old Ping Dong has been teaching himself the clarinet for the past five years and decided to take to the streets and belt out a few carols.

Ping says for him it is about doing things with the time he has left and keeping stimulated and although the clarinet isn’t and easy instrument to play he is giving it a go and a sunny day on Wainuiomata’s Queen Street provided the best opportunity to get out and play.

Delta Buster replaced

After two months on the road providing a base for vaccinations in the community the Delta Buster bus is being replaced by campervans.

The bus provided the wider Hutt community with the opportunity to get vaccinated and was the prime driver behind getting numbers up over 90 percent in the community.

Teresea Olsen, general manager Kokiri Marae Hauora and Social Services, says the campervan will enable the vaccination service to go where the bus couldn’t, into some of the areas in the community where vaccination numbers are at

the lowest.

“The Norfolk area, Glendale area and Homedale have the highest numbers of unvaccinated whanau and so we are going to take the service to them and create more opportunities for them and make it easier for them,” Teresea says.

“When the bus goes back on the 12th of December we will already have our campervans and can go street by street.”

Teresea says they will be able to offer not only COVID injections but also flu vaccinations and health checks.

“It will be an all in one service on the road and we are pretty excited about it.”

New and free fares Metlink has announced it will be trialling a range of new fares in March next year, including free or heavily discounted fares on weekends.

Details of the trial are yet to be fully developed but could include a range of discounted, bundled and even free fares on the region’s bus and train services.

Scott Gallacher, General Manager for Metlink, says the trial will help provide valuable demand insight to help plan for growth

and service design changes in the future as well as pave the way for new fare products as part of the introduction of integrated ticketing system.

“We want to test the resilience of the Metlink network during this trial to see how demand for services are affected when different price packages are put together.

This is part of our ongoing commitment to passengers to provide a reliable, attractive, and modern public transport service across

the region that builds on lessons learned at home and overseas,” says Scott Gallacher This latest trial comes on the back of a number of exciting initiatives from Metlink, including: Early Bird Fares, Snapper on Rail for the Johnsonville line, Cashless Express Services, and On-Demand Services in Tawa.

Red Cross Shops needs more volunteers New Zealand Red Cross Shops are putting a call out for hundreds more volunteers to help during the holiday season and beyond.

National Retail Manager Talei Kitchingman says around 300 additional people are needed to help keep the 46 stores well-stocked and running smoothly. “We are very grateful to our shop volunteers who are working extra hours to support our teams, but we would love to share the load.”

She says while it’s often been a challenge to ensure enough helping hands, as the pandemic continues and people’s circumstances may have changed, finding enough people has become a real struggle right across the country.

Ms K itchingman says people have b e en ver y generous donating items to the stores lately, a nd w it h s o much d em a nd , t h e lack of volunteers is impacting the stores. “We can’t get the stock out on the f loor fast enough, we can’t present the shops as we’d like or provide the level of sevice that’s needed.

We could be selling so much more.”

She says Red Cross Shops play many roles.

“Our shops are a hub in many communities where people can meet others and buy affordable things for their homes. They also provide work experience for young people and job seekers, and they support environmental sustainability as donated goods are ‘recycled, reused and reloved.”

Red Cross Shop coordinator Maree Brogan used to volunteer in the Rangiora shop and now works in the Woolston store. Woolston needs another 10 volunteers and Ms Brogan hopes more people will come forward soon.

“The Red Cross team have become like family to me.

We are all working for a good cause and we can all have a good laugh together. It really makes you feel like you are giving back and doing something good for others.”

“We’ll be providing data from this trial to our funding partners at Waka Kotahi so they can consider how public transport can be funded in the future to help our region and others encourage more people to take it up and leave cars behind,” says Cr Blakeley.

This is the time of the year some of a gardener’s bug enemies get out and cause damage.

I have had my first phone call this week in regards to grass grub beetles eating the foliage of plants.

The beetles are nocturnal. They will come out at dusk to mate and feed and lay eggs during their short life span.

One beetle might consume a few leaves but hundreds and even thousands start to become a biblical plague.

I remember a few years ago about this time a lady phoned me with a sad story.

She had purchased a horticultural block of land with hundreds of EOXHEHUU\ SODQWV 6KH KDG ¿ JXUHG out that the income from the harvest would cover her mortgage repayments.

What she had not calculated on was the block being surrounded by paddocks which were full of grass grubs.

The beetles were out in their thousands feeding on the blueberry foliage and shredding the plants.

What to do? When this happens in towns plants get eaten at night and there is no sign of any culprits in daylight then it is beetles doing the damage.

Take a torch after dusk and go check the plants that are being eaten for the beetles.

When you see them then spray them directly with Wallys Super Pyrethrum at commercial strength.

That is 2.5mls per litre of water. ,W LV D VWURQJ NQRFN GRZQ D൵ HFWLQJ the pest’s nervous system and killing them.

You need to go out each night to check and spray till after a few nights there are no more beetles.

If you are not able to go out then just before dusk, spray any target plants with Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil with the Super Pyrethrum added.

When the beetles arrive later on they will get a dose of Neem when they feed and also have contact with the pyrethrum so a double whammy.

There is another way to control the beetles as they are are attracted to light.

Now this could be used outside in a weatherproof situation as you do not want to mix electricity with water/rain.

Also ideal to use for mosquitoes DQG VDQG À LHV LI RXWVLGH KDYLQJ D BBQ. It will also incinerate moths and DQ\ RWKHU À \LQJ QLJKW LQVHFWV Likely it will be zapping away most of the night so next day you can unplug and clean up the burnt

bodies.

Another pest that will appear about now is the pear-slug or cherry slug.

It is a black slimy looking slug that feeds on the foliage of cherry and pear trees and is the larva of WKH VDZÀ \ 7KH ¿ UVW LQIHVWDWLRQ LV RIWHQ QRW noticed because the numbers are often few but the second infestation later in January/February period is large and damage to the foliage is certainly seen.

Being a slug-like pest they are controlled by sprays of Wallys Liquid Copper with Raingard added So check your trees for them and if seen spray. ,I \RX FDQ HUDGLFDWH WKH ¿ UVW ZDYH of them then there will be few to cause damage later on.

For other pest insects now is the time to get on top of them before they can breed masses of their R൵ VSULQJ Whitefly, leaf hoppers, scale, thrips, mites, caterpillars, etc.

Fill up your sprayer with Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil combined with Wallys Super Pyrethrum to spray any and all target plants just before dusk.

You can add to this spray Magic Botanic Liquid if you want to also promote healthier plants.

If you do this every two weeks before problems start to arise or if already a problem then once a week till you have control.

Settled weather means population explosions.

New data will help predict shaking Findings of a new paper published this week will help predict the shaking Wellington can expect to experience in earthquakes and shed light on why the city saw so much damage from the 2016 Kaikoura quake.

The paper, by Master of Science student Alistair Stronach and Professor Tim Stern from the School of Geography, Environment, and Earth Sciences at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, shows the thickness of soft sediments beneath Wellington city is up to two times greater than previously thought.

“When earthquake waves pass

through layers of sediment—as opposed to basement rock—they increase in intensity and lead to more shaking. This can have a devastating effect on cities, even when earthquakes are located several hundred kilometres away,” Professor Stern says.

In the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, strong waves were produced that got “trapped” in the sediment basin beneath Wellington and caused unexpected damage in the Pipitea and CentrePort area of the city, he says.

The vulnerability of this area to seismic waves stems from both the depth of the sediment and the fact it is mostly reclaimed land.

Data from the research will be used in future computer simulations to predict the shaking that may be expected in different areas of Wellington city.

The research, funded by the Earthquake Commission and published in the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geo-

physics, used high-precision measurements of the Earth’s gravity field to make a map of the sedimentary thickness beneath Wellington city.

Measurements were made with a state-of-the-art gravity meter, which can pinpoint gravity differences to one part in 100

Greek-Style Pork Chops Ingredients:

s 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, divided s 1 teaspoon dried oregano s 2 teaspoons olive oil, divided s 2 garlic cloves, minced s 4 (4-ounce) boneless center-cut loin pork chops s ¾ cup plain fat-free Greek-style yogurt s 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill s ½ teaspoon salt, divided s 1½ cups diced plum tomatoes (about 2 medium) s 1 cup diced seeded cucumber s ½ cup diced red onion s Cooking spray

1. Combine 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, oregano, 1 teaspoon olive oil, and garlic in a zip-top plastic bag.

Add pork to bag, and seal. Marinate for 20 minutes at room temperature, turning after 10 minutes.

Combine remaining 1 tablespoon vinegar, remaining 1 teaspoon oil, yogurt, 1 tablespoon dill, and 1/8 teaspoon salt, stirring well with a whisk. Cover and chill. Combine tomatoes, cucumber, and onion.

Sprinkle tomato mixture with 1/8 teaspoon salt; toss to combine.

2. Heat a grill pan over medium-high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Remove pork from bag, and discard marinade. Sprinkle both sides of pork evenly with remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add pork to pan, and cook for 4 minutes on each side or until desired degree of doneness. Remove pork from pan, and let stand for 2 minutes. Place 3/4 cup tomato mixture on each of 4 plates, and top each serving with 1 pork chop and about 3 tablespoons yogurt mixture.

Ajaz produces performance for the ages The term ‘historic performance’ is often overused, especially in sport, but what spinner Ajaz Patel did on Saturday night in India should be celebrated for many years to come.

Patel became just the third bowler in cricket history to take all 10 wickets in a Test innings on Saturday, saying the stars have aligned for him to enjoy record figures of 10-119 in Mumbai, his birthplace.

The 33-year-old Patel took four wickets on day one and added another six on day two - two in his first over of the day and another four after lunch, as India were dismissed for 325 in the series-deciding Test at Wankhede Stadium.

“It is quite a special occasion for me; not only me, my wife, my mum and dad, my family. A very special day for me. To be born here and then come back here

and achieve something like that is pretty special,” said Patel, who moved to New Zealand with his family when he was a child,” he told reporters.

Jim Laker (10-53), for England against Australia in 1956, and Anil Kumble (10-74), for India against Pakistan in 1999, were the only bowlers to have previously taken all 10 wickets in a Test innings.

Ironically both Patel and Laker

have played cricket for Auckland with the English spinner playing for them in 1951/52.

“Welcome to the club AjazPatel.

Perfect10. Well bowled!” Kumble said in a tweet.

One can only hope Patel is celebrated for his achievement for the rest of his life and long beyond it.

Hopefully New Zealand Cricket can have the foresight to produce some memorabilia for the

achievement.

If they are smart enough, and I question whether they are, they’ll produce something for the man-cave of New Zealand cricket tragics everywhere.

Patel will only get limited chances to add to his 11 tests, such is the life of a front-line Kiwi spinner but he must be celebrated for an achievement we are unlikely to see again from a Kiwi bowler in our lifetimes.

Hashtags help change the law

For a group of Wellington rangatahi, known as The Hashtags, advocating for their community to get this law changed has been a primary focus for a number of years. The group have been supported by Regional Public Health, Health Promoters, Leah Clark and Sisi Tuala Le’afa, who mentor the group, which was formed in 2010.

“One of our first major projects was looking to get the law changed on smoking in cars with anyone under 18. In 2011, a University of Otago study found that frequency of people smoking in cars in Wainuiomata was 11 times higher than the average in the study. For us this reconfirmed what we already knew, this was a problem in our

community, that mostly affected Maori and Pasifika people. We wanted to do something about it through a community response,” Leah says.

Wainuiomata Rugby League Club jumped on board at the time to support the campaign by becoming smokefree and banning smoking on their club grounds. “That was really important for us, because all the time we used to see parents smoking in their cars while picking up and dropping off their kids at league games and practise. What we see now is that kids from the club act as health champions and encourage their parents not to smoke.”

of community information and pop-up events, and even presenting to Select Committee at Parliament, in what The Hashtags describe as a ‘nerve-wracking’ experience.

“The Select Committee asked us lots of questions, so we could tell they were engaged. We felt like they got the message we were sending,” Ihaia Waenga, member of The Hashtags says.

“Working with rangatahi, I’ve never underestimated them. Our

Hashtags are the only youth group that have changed law – from little Wainuiomata. What can you say about that!” Leah says.

The Hashtags continue to meet on regular basis and discuss issues that affect youth and their community.

The group is self-led and continue to be leading community voices on issues including child rights, suicide prevention, youth homelessness and period poverty. “What inspires me about The Hashtags as a group and

as a concept is there are so many positive health outcomes that are tied up in this mahi. Not only do they influence positive change in our community through health reform and act as voice for youth, but at the same time they’re developing these amazing leadership and critical thinking skills. This helps to lay the foundation for them to go on to achieve academic success in tertiary education and then within their chosen career,” said Leah.
