Samuel Marsden Collegiate singer Annie J is finding her voice and turning heads.

Her song ‘A Girl Who Cried Wolf’ has a personal message while also raising funds to provide more than two months is safe nights for Women’s Refuge.

Written out of frustration, Annie J wrote the song disgusted at the level of insidious violence against women.

She is fresh off the back of her recent appearance in ‘Pop Stars NZ’.

Annie made No 3 on the NZ Hot Top 20 chart and No 30 on the NZ Top 40 chart over the weekend.

Annie J finds her voice for a cause Continued from page 1.

Annie says life is busy but she is enjoying it.

“A lot of it is still school at the moment but it is really fun to wake up because I do have so much going on and there is a lot of variety.

“I play sport, I dance, I try to have a bit of a social life.

Annie says she has been dancing since the age of two and singing before she could talk.

“I love it and I hope to continue it after school next year.

Annie says the song took several months to get the lyrics and the sound right, especially when it was recorded.

“The song is a departure from what I’m used to doing.

“Usually I do very up-beat, fun stuff but this topic is important to me and my friends and my age-group.

“The acoustic feel of the song really fits and it sounds really relatable, it’s more personal.”

Annie is releasing a live video today that Radio NZ Music will be doing a music video premiere for.

As a child, Annie was nicknamed ‘Bello’ because of her love of singing and she hoped to continue following a musical theatre path next year.

She says Marsden has been supportive of her endeavours.

“Marsden really promote us and I have really good mentors there plus it is a really supportive community.”

Steve looks back at 15 years at the helm of Pirates ship

Steve Francis’ passion for Karori’s Pirates Swim Club remains as intense as it was when he arrived 15 years ago.

Over that time, the club has grown from 30 to almost 200 swimmers with many making national teams and breaking national records over the years.

“Karori is a family-oriented suburb and the kids are sports-mad so I knew there was an opportunity.

“We are right next to Karori Normal School and I thought it would always be a great spot for a swim club.

However, that is not what keeps Steve motivated to get up before 5am each morning.

“The goal for all of us is trying to

hang on to the young ones.

“As they become teenagers there are so many more distractions for them.

“It’s hard to get a teenager up at 5am in winter so I try to keep them interested.”

“Sometimes I walk through the door and I think ‘how many times have I done this’ but 95 per cent of the time I’m excited to get to work.”

The 49-year-old says creating a team culture is key.

“Even though swimming is an individual sport, creating a team atmosphere brings out the best in everyone especially when a lot of the swimmers spend more time here than they do at home.

“Everyone needs a good training partner,” he says.

Pirates Swim Club coach Steve Francis (centre) has seen his hard work pay off over 15 years in Karori.

“Talents can show themselves with growth and if I can hold on to potential late bloomers, they can have success as well, just as much as the kids with raw talent at a young age.

“I have to be patient and look at the big picture at times.”

or-nine-year-old swimmer who is really nervous at their first swim meet turn into these beasts.”

Steve says catching up with past athletes who have incorporated the life skills they learnt with him into their day-to-day lives was something that gave him a lot of pride.

The 25th anniversary was postponed due to Covid-19 last year.

Ngaio resident Maragaret Pitt will always have fond memories of the Ngaio Union Church Hall which is nearing demolition.

The Ngaio Union Church Hall has been a huge part of the life of the Ngaio Crofton Downs community.

“I attended dances and parties there as a child and a teenager, my late husband Russell and I celebrated our marriage there with friends, our children went to playgroups that met there. Then there was Scottish Country dancing,” Margaret says.

“And I ended up as the bookings secretary.”

The Christchurch earthquakes spelled the end for the hall, which was found to fall short of code standards.

Now, it is being demolished to make way for housing and public spaces.

The Johnsonville Floral Art Club is gearing-up to celebrate their 65th anniversary later this month.

The Johnsonville Floral Art Club members celebrated the winter solstice with a pot luck dinner followed by a laughter-filled hour of playing the board game ‘Five Second Rule.’

This is a deviation from the usual club night where they demonstrate different styles of design and help newer members create their own designs.

Johnsonville is Wellington’s oldest Floral Art Club and is gearing up to celebrate their 65th birthday in July.

To mark this special birthday the club is going to have a demonstration by Sheryl Watkin from ‘Your Wellington Florist’ at Plimmerton

on 24th July titled ‘Working with Nature’.

People are welcome to attend this demonstration on July 24 at 2pm at the Johnsonville Uniting Church 18 Doctor Taylor Terrace.

Admission is $15 which includes afternoon tea.

40 hour sleepover adventure

A long held tradition continues at St Benedicts School in Khandallah with the 40 hour famine sleep over in the school library.

Principal Michael Hinds was on hand to help out with plenty of parents taking it in shifts to supervise the students.

Michael well remembers doing the 40 hour famine as a kid and thinks it is something every student should experience.

“I just want to give that experience to the kids for their own memories and the year sevens do 20 hours and the year eights can do 40,” Michael says.

The sleepover included a game of spotlight then for those who wanted to the Allblacks game was screened in the library or there was a Xfactor type of drama.

“We all go to church in the morning and after that we come up to the school and have a big shared breakfast,” Michael says.

From roads to rotary for Steve Spence Recently retired Wellington chief transport planner and Karori resident, Steve Spence, was inducted as the President of the Rotary Club of Wellington North last week.

Steve arrived in Wellington in November 1982 to join the Traffic Management branch of the Town Planning Department and, two years later, became City Traffic Engineer.

Throughout his 39 years with the Council, Steve’s main task was to keep Wellington moving, while perpetually waiting for the outcome of “Let’s get Wellington Moving” to emerge in reality.

Over time, Steve became responsible for a broad transportation and traffic team, planning, designing and managing the city’s transportation network as well as car parking buildings, street lighting and a range of transport assets.

One of his major successes was the installation of the SCATS traffic signal system across the city, which made a

big difference to traffic flow and safety.

More recently the team has planned and implemented major street upgrades, furniture and planting in the CBD and suburban shopping centres.

Steve, who has served eight mayors and six CEOs, was originally nominated for right otary by his friend and colleague, the late Ken Boyden.

With the growing realisation that the traditional form of rotary clubs did not necessarily meet the needs of contemporary society, the world leaders have loosened the reins by encouraging its world-wide network of 6500 clubs to organise themselves in a way which is appropriate to their community.

Wellington North has moved from a weekly to fortnightly lunch meeting in Thorndon plus a monthly pizza and salad evening meeting in Khandallah to which members of other community organisations,

such as churches, have been invited to participate.

Recent guest speakers have included Andrea McCanse on the science of contact tracing, Race Relations Commissioner, Meng Foon and Wellington City Missioner, Murray Edridge.

Beyond the meetings the Club is involved in a range of activities, including managing the Khandallah Village Fair, supporting primary schools, provision of tertiary scholarships and Rotary’s youth leadership programmes.

The club continues to support the new Regional Children’s Hospital and last, but not least, Charity wholesaler Kiwi Community Assistance, both financially and through working bees.

The well attended Changeover function, held at the Wilton Bowling Club, concluded with a talk on issues facing Wellington by Mayor Andy Foster who managed to answer a number of tricky questions.

“That will be a bigger job than the one we have just done,”said Jeremy. “We’ll have to get a crane in, and ensure that it doesn’t harm the road.”

Johnsonville’s Olympic Harriers has been named the top-performing club at the North Island Cross Country Championships over the weekend.

The event at Spa Park in Taupo saw Olympic runners earn five golds, a silver and four bronze medals over various age-groups.

Brooke Martin won the under-10 girls 1000m event in a time of 3 minutes 59.4 seconds.

Susanah Lynch ran a tremendous tactical race to win the senior women’s 5km even in a time of 17.46.2.

Nic Hankinson won the Masters Womens 40-44 race in 21.13.9.

Annie Van Herck prevailed in the 65-69 age-group in a time of 28.56.7.

Mike Waterman won the Masters Men 50-54 6km race in 23.22.3.

Tracy Berghan was second

in the Masters Womens 55-59 event.

Oliver Harland earned a bronze in the Boys Under-14 race.

Hey Everyone! This week, I want to share with you two ways homeowners believe they can get the best possible price for their home. What they really mean is ‘net profit’ ie; how much money in hand they have after a sale. We regularly come across two types of house-sellers: 1) People who believe that getting the most money in hand is about minimising costs, so they pick the real estate agent with lowest fees, and invest in the cheapest marketing possible, and spend nothing on presenting a property (as they believe buyers can see past it and they will get their own building / LIM report) 2) People who believe that getting the most money in hand is about maximising sale price, so they focus on the best possible process to get the best possible price. They ensure their property is well promoted across multiple channels (not just online), they invest in getting their property looking as best as possible and they hire a real estate agent that actually has the seller’s best interest at heart and our community of buyers love to deal with (people pay more buying from people they like). Just like a WOF and Service history when you buy a car, getting a LIM and Builder Report upfront will give buyers full confidence to fall in love with the home!

If you look at similar properties sold next to each other, we have stats to show that what a house sells for had little to do with the actual house. What a buyer pays depends on the buying process.

Whichever way you decide, you can’t go back in time and re-do it – But you can think about relative differences in the

process - Let’s say Agent 1 got you a sale price of $800k, what would you have got with Agent 2 if you did more marketing, presented your property beautifully and you had an agent that was looking after your best interest and had exceptional rapport with the community and buyers? There is simply no argument that your sale price would have been higher. By doing more you will get more for your property. So, avoid the “what if” and sell with no regrets!

Sadly, with real estate, companies do not incentivise their agents to get a premium price. Getting $20k more for the seller, may only be a a few hundred more for the agent.

So, before you gamble with your biggest asset, focus on the tangible selling process, not agent promises. The best possible process will get you the best possible price.

Te reo name gifted to ancient rimu in Otari-Wilton’s Bush To coincide with Matariki, Wellington’s oldest and tallest tree, the 800-year-old rimu in Otari-Wilton’s Bush, has been gifted the name Moko with a plaque unveiling on Tuesday.

The name Moko has been gifted by local Iwi after some discussion about a suitable title, and establishing the age and sex of the tree – Moko was decided upon as it is most appropriate for a female tree, which is younger than Tane Mahuta.

Otari-Wilton’s Bush is the only public botanic garden in New Zealand dedicated solely to native plants, and this tree is a valuable reminder about the importance of preservation in our environment, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“This rimu has seen off predators, diseases and human development in its over 800 years on this site, and will continue to do so thanks to our committed team and the viewing platform which helps protect the roots.

“As guardians of this land, we are very proud of the remarkable work being done at tari – and so it’s fitting we honour this magnif-

icent tree that is the beating heart of this popular visitor attraction.

“When considering a name for formal adoption, it must reflect the unique identity, culture and environment, and tell a story about the history, geography, and heritage of the subject. It also needs to take into account the views of the community and stakeholders.

“Moko was determined to best fit the criteria, and conjure up a sense of t rangawaewae for all to connect with and enjoy.”

It’s important to celebrate, embrace and acknowledge our environment, and recognise this iconic rimu with gifting it a te reo M ori name, says Te Atiawa’s Liz Mellish.

“Otari is whenua that is important to Te Atiawa and Ng ti Tama as a site of indigenous forest which was a place for bird snaring.

“It was on the route to Makara and trails went past and through there. All trees of T ne are important in Te Ao M ori, the ngahere the forest was the home of insects, birds and plants that provided sustenance for us.

“Not only sustenance but rongo and building materials, clothing and many other uses such as weapons, carving, and waka. The value we place on the ngahere is immeasurable for mental health as it’s a place for reflection, for gathering with wh nau, and to commune with living flora and fauna.”

A bequest from architect and environmentalist Robert Fantl has helped conserve the tree – 50 years after he helped save it by challenging its demolition in the courts when the Council had plans to build a road through the area to the nearby landfill.

Funding for a viewing platform to protect the tree roots was provided by the tari-Wilton’s Bush Trust, via the bequest from the Fantl estate. Members of the Fantl family will be present at the event.

Phil Parnell from Otari-Wilton’s Bush Trust says the donation has helped protect the tree for now and the future.

Wellington groups call for free public transport trial A coalition of organisations has launched a petition calling on the government to fund a trial of free public transport for Community Service Card holders and students in the Greater Wellington region.

“This is an essential move for students who face unaffordable living costs in the city, foregoing basic needs and services in order to use public transport,” said Victoria University of Wellington Students Association (VUWSA)

Engagement Vice President and campaign spokesperson Grace Carr.

“The government is funding a similar trial in Auckland next year. Wellington people deserve something similar.”

The pilot would help reduce transport poverty, the coalition says.

“People like me can’t afford a bus fare,” said a Community Services Card holder from Wellington, who

preferred to remain anonymous.

“I take the train from Wellington to Paekakariki to see my cousin and even with a Total Mobility Card it costs $11.50 and that’s a lot of money, so sometimes I can’t afford to go.”

The proposal is also touted as a step to help the region address climate change.

“Increased public transport use is crucial for reducing our emissions, and the Climate Commission

has recommended lower fares to encourage mode shift,” said Jenny Rowan from K piti Climate Change Action Group.

“It’s also really important for this to be a just transition. We need to prioritise public transport access for those on lower incomes. The proposed pilot would do just that.”

“Accessible public transport is important for equity and climate action. That includes fair pay for our bus drivers, which we

fully support,” said VUWSA Campaigns Officer and campaign spokesperson Katherine Blow.

NZ Rugby do Tonga no favours with thrashing You could be forgiven in thinking Tom Latham and Devon Conway had laid a good platform for the All Blacks on Saturday night.

The All Blacks 102-0 win over Tonga looked more like a cricket score and was not a good advertisement for international rugby.

The night was an embarrassment on many levels.

Scores between international teams should never get that lopsided in the modern game.

Tickets from $50 upwards for that is not acceptable.

Many of their players were club players based in New Zealand living out a dream of playing for their country against the greatest rugby entity on the planet.

However, what happened on Saturday does nothing to improve the game in the Pacific Islands.

better than what we witnessed on the weekend.

Hawks look for revenge against Axemen

Johnsonville will be looking for a little revenge when they play Wellington Axemen in the opening round of the Hardham Cup on Saturday.

In a battle of 11 v 12 on the Swindale Shield ladder, Johnsonville earned two wins, with the Axemen earning three including a 27-17 triumph over the Hawks in round eight back in May. Prior to that game, Johnsonville coach Jason Adamson had described it as a game his team was capable of winning.

“We have to be more clinical this time around,” Jason says.

The team will welcome back several

key names like halfback Mark Sutton, utility Niall Delahunt, prop Ha’amea Ahio, No 10 Oliver Paotonu and lock Adney Roebeck.

“I’d like to play a little wider against them this time around, really challenge them in the wider channels,” Jason says.

While the scrum has been a highlight for Johnsonville this year, the line out has been a struggle.

Jason says the team is eager to produce a strong showing in a big game.”

Statistics say Johnsonville have a good chance, having scored 38 more points and conceded 47 less points throughout the season.

Stoppage-time goals sink North Wellington

Round 13 of the Men’s Central Football League played out on Saturday with North Wellington FC hosting Western Suburbs at Alex Moore Park. The match was a must win affair for both teams and could possibly shape the remaining five games of the season. North Wellington held the mortgage on eighth place prior to the weekend’s game and Western Suburbs were sitting in fifth spot. Both teams are aiming to clinch the all-important fourth place berth this season with only four points between them before the start of play.

North Wellington had the better of the first half overall but with a goal each in the opening 45 minutes, it was all tied up going into the break. North Wellington’s goal came courtesy of Jesse Randall in the 27th minute while Western Suburbs scored right before half time through Ihaia Delaney.

The second half was a tight affair with a couple of chances to each side. Nick Stanton in goal for North Wellington had a good afternoon, making a couple of clinching saves while Western Suburbs Keeper Kees Sims made the save of the game late on from a Gavin Hoy header 6 yards out which Hoy would normally convert nine times out of ten. Jesse Randall again gave North Wellington the lead with 6 minutes remaining in the game, but this was not enough on the day. Wests proved the value of persistence, never gave up and played right to the final whistle with goals in the 90th and 93rd minutes for substitute William Gillion. The end result was a 3-2 win for Wests, leaving their North Wellington hosts to wonder what went wrong after such a superb effort until almost the very end.

The result leaves Western Suburbs in control of their destiny now to take the fourth place spot. North Wel-

lington mathematically are still in with a chance but need favours from other clubs to make it in to the National phase of the competition.

In other matches in the round Wellington Olympic won the clash of the titans 3-1 over Lower Hutt City, Wairarapa United had a 1 all draw with Waterside Karori, Napier City Rovers squeezed past Peone 1-0 and Wainuiomata remain winless after a 7-1 loss at the hands of Miramar Rangers. Miramar leads the group on 33 points, Wellington Olympic 32, Lower Hutt are on 28 and Wests and Wairarapa are further back on 19 points.

Napier are on 17, Waterside Karori, 15, North Wellington 12, Petone 6 and Wainuiomata are yet to get off the mark.

The North Wellington women are having a better time of it with the Innkeeper North Wellington Premier team opening up a 5 point lead in their competition after a 2-0 win over Victoria University.
