Brookfield to enter new era after 10 years Continued from page 1 “It’s been a good opportunity for us to live in an outdoor environment and our sons are now 16 and 13 so it’s been a fantastic environment to bring them up and learn about the outdoors and interact with the groups we’ve had coming through,” Andrew says.

Brookfield Outdoor Education Centre is nestled in the heart of Moores Valley in Wainuiomata.

“We’ve worked with users and community groups around Wainuiomata to develop this place based on their needs and we’ve done that and it’s been a great 10 years,” he says.

The couple say they initially had “a five year plan” to manage Brookfield but the lifestyle and people they met and work with have kept them enjoying the role.

“I think Pauline initially felt we were out in the middle of nowhere but we started to form good relationships with neighbours and created a community within a community.

“Pauline would invite the neighbours for Easter egg hunts and I think that has opened up the place to new people,” Andrew says.

“It took us a good couple of years to work out exactly how things worked and what was needed,” Andrew says.

“We replaced some of the old domestic drives with commercial gas stoves based on feedback, more storage for food, commercial fridges and all of that made a big difference,” he says.

“We looked at an ecology plan, a predator free 2050 approach.

“Ten years ago we gave out a pamphlet on native birds, trees and plants and left them to it.

“Now we have groups coming in and clearing out traps and as a family we’ve been very involved and enjoyed it.”

The couple say running the park, while juggling their own professional jobs and raising a young family has had its moments but it has been rewarding.

“There’s been a lot of interrupted meals or racing kids to rugby matches and then racing back to check people out or meet a group.

“Looking back on 10 years I don’t know how we’ve done it but I also don’t know what we will do on the weekends now,” Andrew says.

Pauline says the lifestyle has been a passion project in many respects with annual leave spent painting, mowing lawns or fixing odd jobs.

“We’ll clear dead rats as a family, which was interesting to start,” she says.

felt right about leaving Brookfield during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It feels like the right time to be closer to civilisation and with the boys being older now, the time is right.

“We feel we are handing it over in better shape than we found it and that is satisfying,” Andrew says.

“We’re going to miss the people and the passionate groups who come through and use the place,” Pauline says.

“All the regulars who kept

coming back for their summer holidays,” she says.

The family will finish on July 3 with a recruitment process underway to find their replacements.

“We just want to thank all the community groups and people who have used the facility,” Pauline says.

“There has been such a broad range of people from school camps to church groups to festival goers and families so it’s been really diverse and we’ve loved every second of it,” Pauline says.

Update on the Heretaunga Block at Hutt Hospital Hutt Valley District Health Board (HVDHB) has received a seismic assessment that has found the Heretaunga Block to be earthquake-prone. Under the legislation we have until 2029 to strengthen the building.

HVDHB staff and patient safety, both clinical and physical, is the priority, so they are planning to shift staff and services from the Heretaunga Block over time.

HVDHB have received expert engineering advice that the risk to people, while they take the next steps, is low.

At the moment it is business as usual for accessing health services.

The emergency department is operating as normal, as it is located in a different building.

It is important that people continue using their local service when they need to, as normal.

As planning progresses there will be some changes at the Hutt Hospital, like new signage and temporary barriers showing people where to go.

Some healthcare services will move over time. When the HVDHB know when services will be relocated they will contact people who are affected.

Please join me in telling the Council to reject a clean fill in Waiau Street. Talk to those who had to put up with the now closed clean fill coast road. Letting a private one run at the end of Waiau street would be an unconscionable act by the Council. If you have gone up the walkway to the top of the hill from the end of Waiau Street you will know the whole area can be a quagmire in winter. Once again there is an issue with council accountability and refusal to engage with the community. If it had not been for The Clean Fill Liaison Group requesting the latest on clean fill applications nobody might have known. I understand the application has been with the Council for months.

Ginny Anderson goes back to school What do you get when the Hutt South Member of Parliament walks into a classroom at Arakura School?

Ginny Anderson teaching handwriting and phonological awareness.

She visited the school to find out the reality of being in a classroom and discover first hand the challenges that teachers face every day.

On June 30, the Primary Teachers Collective Agreement (PTCA) expires.

When negotiations between NZEI Te Riu Roa (primary teachers' union) and the Ministry of Education begin, teachers will be asking MPs to provide schools with more staffing in Budget 2023.

The aim is to improve student/

teacher ratios, have more time for teachers to plan and prepare for teaching and learning, more staffing for learning support and an increase in staffing for Maori and Pasifika learners.

Ginny's visit on Friday was one of the actions of the teachers of Arakura School to raise awareness in the campaign for more staffing in primary schools. Ginny's visit was a chance for teachers and learning assistants to share their stories with her and for the principal, Tute Mila, to explain the challenges she faces every day trying to do the best to meet the needs of all the learners at Arakura School with inadequate staffing.

Peter Free Leader of Learning – Mathematics z Are you a dog or cat person?

I was a cat person. We bought our two fat cats back with us from Brunei nine years ago. Unfortunately, over the first covid lockdown I developed an allergy and now am no longer able to touch them. At the moment we coexist but they don’t really understand why I can no longer fuss them. z Three words to describe yourself?

Family, faith, fitness. z What did you want to be when you grew up?

I was one of those people without a really clear idea about what I wanted to do. I only really decided to become a teacher as I was leaving university. z One thing we’d be surprised to know about you?

I’ve had several haiku published in the NZ Poetry Society’s magazine, A Fine Line, and also overseas. z Have you met anyone famous?

I was in a conference with the patriarch of the Coptic Church and have a photo with him. z My favourite food to cook or eat is...?

I prefer cooking things that are easy. Quantity rather than quality is important to me.

z The shop you can’t walk past is...?

Women’s clothing shops.

My favourite was Hartley’s in Queensgate. Why did they have to shut down?? But there is still Heroine Fashions in Petone and Penelope’s in Otaki. My wife has got used to me buying her clothes unexpectedly. z What’s your favourite game of sport to watch?

All Black test rugby, especially the World Cup. z Your dream weekend involves....?

Walking one of the Great Walks in NZ. I’ve only got the Heaphy and Paparoa tracks to do. z Favourite programme or series currently watching?

I watch quite a bit of Korean soap on Netflix because it is wholesome stuff. I am a bit of a romantic and like plotlines with happy endings. Because I read the sub titles, I often watch without any sound on. z What’s one thing on your bucket list?

I would like to go on a trip and visit some of the really old sites. The pyramids in Egypt, walk the angel trail in Israel, Parthenon in Greece, etc.

How would you like to bring a little Magic to your gardens, all plants as well as your house plants?

There is a very simple way which many gardeners have found to their delight; MBL Magic Botanical Liquid.

You could call it Magic Prehistoric Compost Tea as it is derived from sediment that was formed millions of years ago when the planet was new and bursting with life.

Things grew ginormous back then plants were several times larger than their counter parts of our times and the animals or dinosaurs were in most part monsters as well.

What made them so?

It was the rich minerals of the time along with the highest levels of CO2 the world has ever known.

CO2 varied between 2000 to 4000 ppm 65 million years ago We currently are only 387 to 420 ppm which means plants do not grow as big as quickly as they did 65 million years ago.

That is except in commercial glasshouses were we use CO2 generators to pump the gas into the house and speed up growth and size of crops.

It is an interesting cycle as plants absorb CO2 and release oxygen, we need oxygen to breathe and we expel CO2!

So if we use logic to the common denominator and we reduce CO2 we have smaller plants (combine this with massive deforestation) Less OXYGEN for us.

If you want to find out how that feels without having to climb mount Everest where at high altitudes there is much less oxygen then take a paper bag and breath in and out into the bag for several minutes.

Your brain will become deprived of required amounts of oxygen you will feel sleepy, lose concentration and your body functions will start closing down. Organ damage will start to occur as your blood is now not carrying oxygen to the cells only CO2. Not good.

Oceanic plankton which provide about half the worlds oxygen but most of that is used by the marine life.

A problem also lies in the oceans called algae bloom which when it dies it uses more of the ocean produced oxygen than can be replenished at that time.

This can create extremely low oxygen concentrations, or hypoxia which are dead zones as no marine life can live there.

We see algae blooms occurring in NZ as a result of nitrogen and phosphorus run off combine with temperature, sun light and low flow of water makes perfect algae bloom conditions.

So the old saying; breathe out and make a plant happy (and grow) is very true.

Everything in Nature has natural balance we need oxygen and plants need CO2, the more CO2 the bigger the plants, the bigger the plants the more oxygen we have to breathe.

So if you go for a walk in the park where there are lots of trees and plants or better still go for a walk in the bush and you will feel good as a result of higher concentrations of oxygen for you to breath in.

Back to our Magic... My partner has a lot of house plants which she started collecting in the last year or so and recently her friends commented on how really big they had grown and healthy they are.

They want to know her secret which turns out to be MBL that she adds a little to the water every now and then when watering them.

That is why I have been prompted to write again about MBL. Other interesting comments from gardeners have been: Regular spraying of roses with MBL has reduced considerably leaf diseases and now some roses have perfume never detected previously.

Seedlings produced to sell only take about half the time as they did without MBL. Seeds germinate far quicker in one case pumpkin plants from seed in one day.

Vegetable crops twice the size in just about half the time.

Combine MBL with Mycorrcin or/and molasses and increase the effectiveness of both growth and less diseases. Why? It is MAGIC. MBL ( Humate and Fulvic acid ) is a growth booster for plants, it makes for much bigger root systems, stronger and healthier plants.

It is been used with balanced NPK fertilisers to create world record vegetables in America such as 26.7 kg Celery and a 14 kg cauliflower to mention two of many.

If you are into growing record breaking vegetables for shows this could be for you.

Benefits may include; Aids and speeds up germination of seeds.

Helps to release locked up fertilisers from past applications especially phosphates.

chemical fertilisers and organic foods for plants.

Helps reduce many common plant disease problems.

Increases availability of micro nutrients.

Contains a number of trace elements such as Si, Mg, S, Mn and more.

Increases ability for photosynthesis.

Contains silica which strengthens cell walls, helps block disease and regulates cell temperature which increases drought and frost tolerance.

Increase pH buffering properties of soil.

Retains and releases water soluble fertilisers for plants when needed.

Increases soil aeration.

Improves soil structure.

Makes soil more friable.

Has a capacity to detoxify chemical residues and heavy metals.

A powerful, natural chelating agent.

Improves taste and shelf-life.

Fulvic acid can promote prolonged production, as it tends to delay the aging process.

Fulvic acid increases the metabolism of proteins.

Used at the rates of 20ml per litre as a soil drench as required and 10ml per litre as a foliar spray once or twice a month.

A must for roses, tomatoes and all vegetable and fruit crops.

Green keepers are using it for better turf so onto the lawn for better healthier lawns.

If you have brown patches on the lawn where dogs have urinated use MBL to help restore or re-establish grass.

Another close loss for Wainuiomata Wainuiomata’s Swindale Shield campaign of close losses continued Saturday with a 29-25 defeat to Avalon.

With Avalon fullback and earlier try-scorer Moomoo Falaniko in the sin-bin, replacement hooker Tufi Tufi scored the match-winner for the Wolves in the 79th minute.

Wainuiomata were fast out of the blocks and fullback Derek Lealiifano scored a try that was converted by debutant halfback Jacob Renor to put the home side up 7-0.

Lock Jarimar Schuster then found the whitewash and Wainuiomata were up 12-0 inside 10 minutes.

The Wolves hit back through centre Pena Sione-Leota, but Renor kicked a penalty to make it 15-7. Avalon scored through fullback Falaniko but there was no further scoring for another half an hour.

The drought was broken by consecutive Avalon tries to Tufi Tufi (his first) and No. 8 Chris Lafaele and Avalon led 24-15 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Woeful Warriors are unwatchable It appears the Warriors are looking for rock bottom but cannot find it.

Losing to the Sharks when they had a two-man advantage wasn’t it because then they lost to the hopeless Newcastle Knights.

Many thought the handling of the Matt Lodge exit, where the forward got a $750,000 handshake which will count towards next year’s salary cap, was the lowest ebb but being pummelled 44-12 against an under strength Manly team missing their main star Tom Trbojevic and

several State of Origin representatives on Saturday night was equally as pathetic as anything I previously mentioned.

I think many of the players have given up, perhaps having one eye on returning to Auckland in three weeks.

The Warriors barely fired a shot as Manly opened up a 26-0 lead at halftime.

There is one area in particular that I got wrong pre-season.

I was all in favour of bringing Shaun Johnson home to add experi-

ence in the halves and an improved kicking game.

Well, he’s a shell of himself and a liability at the moment.

Clearly down on confidence, Johnson, perhaps fearful of injuries no longer attacks the defensive line when he has the ball which was his X factor when he was younger.

Now, defensive lines don’t respect his running game and simply slide on to the attackers outside him, correctly predicting he will pass it on.

Add to this his mediocre at best defence and kicking game which

has been below par for much of the season and the Warriors have been left looking rudderless in attack more often than not.

There is a part of me that has pity for coach Nathan Brown, I don’t think Craig Bellamy or Wayne Bennett could do much better with this crop of players.

Yes, I’m sure many are fatigued from three seasons exclusively playing in Australia and for all their flaws, the club deserves a lot of credit for doing that because it has kept the competition afloat.

However, this team has zero of the trademark Warriors flair which was both exhilarating and maddening from week-to-week.

This is just a bad team which looks utterly lost and out of motivation to do better.

My partner, a massive Warriors fan, who ensures we watch every game, said on Saturday to turn it off at halftime.

Her faith is shaken, mine has thankfully long gone and I’m sure we aren’t the only ones questioning where the club goes from here.

Wainuiomata knocked out of Chatham Cup

Wainuiomata exited the Chatham Cup as Central League side North Wellington won the round two fixture at Richard Prouse. 1-0 down at half time thanks to a deflected goal early on, Wainui were still in with a chance to go through to the third round. However North Wellington showed their class and Wainui never really got out of the blocks as the game ended 7-0 to the visitors.

In other results, the Reserves

bounced back from last week’s disappointing defeat by putting on a class A performance. A double to Christian Donaldson and a goal that can only be described as a screamer from Jamie Rybinski helped the home side win 5-0 against Victoria University. Rowan Whitfield and Joel Ashforth also got on the scoresheet. The Thirds had a tough day at the office as a good first half performance was not replicated in the second half

and they lost 4-0 against Brooklyn United. The Roundballs extended their unbeaten streak to four games as they travelled to Porirua and beat Western Suburbs 3-1. The Horns had another tough game as they conceded five against top of the table and undefeated Miramar Rangers.

Onto the Masters games and the Undertakers won just their second game of the season but they did it in style as they beat Upper Hutt 6-2.

Pasifika faced Eastbourne in a top of the table clash between the only two sides yet to drop any points this season. In an evenly poised contest, both sides still remain undefeated as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The OC’s wrapped up Saturday’s fixtures with a narrow 3-2 defeat against Naenae.

The Wildcats were the only Wainui side to play on Sunday and were unfortunately unable to find the back of the net as they went

down 3-0 against Wellington United.
