Teresea Olsen, general manager of Kokiri Marae Hauora and Social Services says the vaccination programme has been going well with a steady 2,075 given last week with similar numbers for previous weeks.

“The uptake and number of people getting vaccinated has been great but we are having high numbers of people making appointments and not attending, between 30 and 40,” Teresea says.

There may be a range of reasons for this.

“I think some of it is because people are booking elsewhere

and not cancelling their appointments so we can’t give that slot to somebody else. Some people have told us they haven’t had a text to remind them when their appointment is,” she says.

“Because the numbers for Maori and Pacifica have been so low we have been encouraged as a Whanau Ora provider to get these groups to come on down and we are trying to removed all the barriers to get them to come down.”

“There is also the general conversation about what is in it and that sort of thing.”

Having the vaccination centre at the Wainuiomata Marae has also been a boost for the community.

“We have had many, many people come in and say they had never ever been to the Marae and it has given them a chance to come and connect and it has been really good for the community to have the vaccination centre there.”

Open six days a week from Sunday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm

with late nights on Wednesdays and Thursdays to 7.30 pm.

This week there is a Maori and Pacific whanau ‘walk in’ COVID vaccination clinic Thursday the 9th from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

The latest figures for vaccinations as of September the 5th show over two and a half million people have received their first vaccination followed by one point three million fully vaccinated.

This means 61 percent of the eligible population have had there first vaccination and 31 percent of the eligible population have had their second vaccination.

After the relative restrictions of the recent lockdowns, Phil Teal, Regional Manager of the Wellington Fish and Game Council, is encouraging licenced anglers to head off to their local river, “take a moment to notice nature”, and celebrate Conservation Week 2021.

“For recreational anglers, this is a timely prompt to get out to the river, actively reconnect with nature, and appreciate the fantastic opportunities and experiences we have close to home”, Mr Teal says.

“We all know that we feel better having connected with nature, and what could be a better opportunity to do this than by safely casting a lure in your local river? Overseas research has confirmed what we probably already knew; being active in the outdoors is hugely beneficial for our mental health and wellbeing and a great antidote to the additional stressors we’ve experienced over recent weeks.”

The Government has now clarified that it

is ok to cast a line at your local river during all alert levels, and Mr Teal is encouraging all licenced anglers to make the most of the opportunity. The guidance indicates you should fish your closest, not your favourite, location. There is no set limit on how far you can travel to fish your “local spot”, but staying within your region is a must. The big catch is that under Alert Level 3 you must fish locally, so check out your local Fish and Game Park and Cast spot.

“If you are lucky enough to live in the Hutt Valley, the mainstem of the Hutt River is a world-class trout fishery and a great place to fish during the winter right on your doorstep!

Brown trout can be caught by casting soft baits under or alongside the willows that line the riverbank.”

Mr Teal says, “the opportunity to fish is a welcomed privilege and not an invitation to meet up with your mates for a chat down at the river, so please enjoy this leave pass sensibly.”

A fishing licence is required to fish for trout.

Short-term licences can be purchased from the Fish and Game website.

inbrief news Stay safe on your bikes More Kiwis are out cycling for recreation, checking out scenery, or just getting out of their bubbles.

While we are in level 3 restrictions, it’s best to remember you still need to be safe on your bike, despite fewer vehicles being on the roads.

Please make sure you are aware of all traffic, and also consider wearing high visibility clothing and have good lights on your bike, especially while riding in low light.

As part of creating a successful multi-modal transport system Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency) is working with its partners, including Police, to offer a safer, more accessible and attractive network for cycling so more Kiwis can choose to get about by bike.

Pipe renewals progressing in Wainuiomata Hutt City Council’s investment in core infrastructure is addressing drinking and wastewater issues in Wainuiomata by renewing pipes, but not in a way you’d immediately recognise.

Lower Hutt Mayor and Wellington Water Committee Chair Campbell Barry says that investing in our water pipes is vital to building strong foundations for our city’s future.

“These renewals programme will enable the current infrastructure we have in place to support the growth we’re experiencing, especially in Wainuiomata,” Campbell says.

“In Hutt City Council’s ten year plan we prioritized investing heavily in our core infrastructure. One of the challenges we face with our bold and ambitious plan is executing the large workload required, so it’s exciting to see this investment being put

to work in our communities.

“This investment is also seeing wider benefits too, with jobs created as a result of the work, as well as the crews employing methods to replacing pipes that cause less disruption and environmental damage.”

Instead of digging a trench, removing the pipe, and replacing it with a new one, pipe bursting is used alongside directional drilling and lining to renew pipes. By feeding liners into them, pushing a new pipe through where the old one used to be, or drilling a new pipe through the ground, renewing pipes becomes faster and more cost effective.

Wellington Water Programme Lead for renewals, Beth Parkin, says that by being more efficient, Wellington Water can identify areas, rather than pipes, that require renewal and undertake a planned approach.

Dear Editor, I had a person come to me before the lock down started moaning about why should the elderly and disabled park near the entrance to the Countdown Main doors. I quickly answered and said why can’t they. Do you have any objection of walking a few extra k’s from the public car parks. He said it’s not fair trucks use to use that lane for the shops behind Queen Street . I answered and said if you are observant you would of Noticed the Lane is still there and Count down have their own loading bay.

Besides if that lane behind the shops was removed all the shop owners of Queen street would have made a big complaint by now . Maybe folks he was still suffering from Covid Lock down anxiety issues from last year?

He only looked in his 40’s. What’s a young person doing moaning about

silly things like that , he walked away muttering to him self . I said have a nice day . I can’t stand Moaners .

We have our own new Supermarket with all the new gadgets and you hear people moaning about silly little things hasn’t got this hasn’t got that . Well if you shopped local maybe they could afford them? If you don’t shop local and go to Lower Hutt you will loose Count Down and if there’s a big disaster and Wainuiomata is cut off from the Hutt what are you going to do with no shops ?

Same with the Village if you keep buying else where you will loose your Village shops This message is to the “elsewhere buyers and Moaners.” Those Disability parks are for people with disabilities would you like to share their disabilities ?

If not stay out of them if you haven’t

got a disability card. If you get fined blame your selves . Have compassion for People with Disabilities you may end up that way your selves one day keep that in mind . I have a great deal of respect for those people with disabilities. I have friends who are in that disability area of health. To park in those parks when you are to lazy to walk in the rain you are preventing people who have got issues with walking you would come under the heading of selfishness. I have no pity on those who do those things to the Disabled if they get a ticket on their window I would use the same words as Windsor Davies used in It ain’t half hot Mum series, ( OH DEAR HOW SAD NEVER MIND ).

Accident no surprise Dear Editor, I was not surprised to hear of an accident on Wainui Hill involving a truck but thought it more likely going up than down. My condolences to all involved in the accident and wish them a speedy recovery. I have had concerns ever since the Clean fill was

reopened and the lack of signage going up warning of trucks on the blind corner and also where lanes merge. I spoke to the Mayor about it months ago but nothing happened so I have an official request for appropriate signage. I am waiting to hear back.

People who don’t know the Wainui

Hill even going at normal speed could go straight up the back of a laden truck. May have to seek signage for going down too as when clean fill closes for good there could be more trucks going down.

Greater Wellington welcomes report

Greater Wellington has welcomed a report from the Transport and Infrastructure Committee on congestion charging in Auckland, describing it as a necessary enabler for mode shift and zero emissions targets.

In its findings the report stressed the need to engage with the public about what congestion pricing is, what purpose it serves, and how it can be implemented, as well as the importance of showing how the revenue would be used to benefit people affected by congestion pricing.

Roger Blakeley, chair of Greater Wellington’s Transport committee wholeheartedly agrees with the findings.

inbrief news Door-delivered goods a target for thieves Police are reminding the community to keep an eye out for courier deliveries to ensure their goods don’t go missing.

Last year over COVID restriction level 3 and 4, Police noticed an increase in thefts from letter boxes and front doors.

Also a target could be items left out for pick-up, such as dry-cleaning, food and gifts.

Perhaps arrange with the receiver that the items will be hidden from view.

Another issue is opportunity thieves following courier drivers and keeping an eye on deliveries left on door steps.

If you see any suspicious activity, such as people loitering around vehicles or looking into car windows, please contact Police immediately by phoning 111.

Police here to help, no matter the alert level Police are urging anyone experiencing abuse or violence to seek support.

Preliminary data shows the number of reported family harm incidents increased by 3.9 percent in week one of Alert Level 4 and 6.2 percent in week two.

Alert level restrictions can put additional pressure on families and increase the risk of violence from a partner or family member.

If you cannot call, leave your bubble and ask a neighbour or passer-by to call for you.

We also urge anyone with concerns about a loved one or friend to call us on their behalf – you could be saving their life.

Hutt City Council strong credit rating The international credit-rating agency Standard & Poor’s has reaffirmed Hutt City Council’s AA long-term rating with a stable outlook.

In its report, Standard & Poor’s says the Council’s large capital programme and borrowing levels are supported by growing revenues and Crown infrastructure funding”, adding that “prefunding remains a key strength to support liquidity.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says the latest rating reinforces Council’s record of strong financial management.

“It is further evidence that our approach of getting back to basics is the right one. Not only are we investing in the infrastructure and services that enable our people and all our communities to thrive - we are doing it in a financially sustainable and prudent way.”

Koru Homes NZ has launched to market the first stage of residential housing development Koru Kainga in Wainuiomata– the first private development in New Zealand dedicated to getting first home buyers on the property ladder.

Located at the junction of Moores Valley Road and Hair Street in Wainuiomata, it will include 51 new homes, 41 of which will be set aside for first home buyers.

The semi-detached 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 117sqm homes are priced well below the market rate at a fixed rate of $650,000.

10 of the homes in the development will be up for tender to cover the expected cost escalation from now to completion, so that,

they do not pass the cost increment to first home buyers.

The development is the first of a series of projects Koru Homes NZ founder Adrian Chooi has for the region.

Adrian says he knows what it’s like to worry about putting a roof over his head, having arrived in Lower Hutt in 1988 as an immigrant from Malaysia. Growing up with six other siblings, Chooi’s family often moved from house to house and had to ration on food.

He moved to Wainuiomata in the early 1990s, when the suburb was struggling with job losses after industrial work dried up in Lower Hutt. His first job was working in a petrol station. Having since trained and worked as a management accountant, Chooi returned to resettle in Wainuiomata after some time overseas and wanted to help his old community.

Koru Homes NZ has partnered with local businesses to bring the development to life,

including Wai-Worx, a collective of Te Ati Awa affiliated businesses. They are also taking on local apprentices to complete the work through WelTec. “We have purposedly kept everything local.

From the manufacturing of the houses to the drainage, to the civil contractors and builders – everyone is part of the local community,” Adrian says.

He says the special relationship with mana whenua has been an important one. Care of people, the environment and each other is a key Kaupapa in this project.

Hutt South MP Ginny Anderson, worked with Koru Homes NZ over the past three years helping connect the company with local partners.

Maori communication Escooters portal Minister for Maori Development, Willie Jackson, has announced a new approach to the Government’s Maori communications response to COVID-19.

While the COVID-19.govt.nz website will remain the main source of trusted Covid-19 information for all New Zealanders, the tpk.govt.nz webpage will become another source of Covid

information that will be the go-to website for Te Ao Maori, he says.

The portal includes linking through to important information on the Karawhiua Maori vaccination campaign led by TPK co-delivered by Te Hiringa Hauora (Health Promotion Agency) and supported by the Ministry of Health and the Unite Against COVID-19 teams.

Expert advice for Lockdown runners One of New Zealand’s greatest ultrarunners says it’s awesome to see people hitting the streets in huge numbers during lockdown, but urges them to have a training plan.

Throughout her 25-year career, 52-year-old Lisa Tamati competed in over 140 ultramarathons, more than 70,000km of running.

Running is one of the few activities New Zealanders can do at all Alert Levels and Lisa says it is common for beginners to go too hard, too soon.

“Everyone thinks that running is easy and that you put one foot in front of the other. You buy a pair of shoes and then off you go.

“It’s not. It’s a skill that you need to work on and. You need good form, you need strength and mobility, a coach and a properly structured plan.”

Lisa says one reason for the higher levels is that New Zealanders are stressed like never before during COVID-19.

“Your body is tighter, your immune system is down and your digestive system isn’t working as well. Learning to manage stress is so important.”

And getting out in the fresh air and pushing ourselves is, she says, great for mental health and physical wellbeing.

But, she adds: ”It’s common for ‘weekend warrior’ runners to

For good nutrition, she advocates that you eat whole, unprocessed foods and don’t overdo the simple carbs.

Finally, she says, you need a warm down. “Put aside time to stretch after your run. Build recovery days into your programme.

NZ Paralympians done disservice by TV coverage The New Zealand Paralympic Team has been let down by the poor coverage their campaign has received.

On the surface, converting TVNZ Duke into a non-stop Paralympic channel was a good move, certainly an improvement at first glance on previous campaign coverage.

However, as the days have come and gone, it’s been clear TVNZ’s efforts have been half-baked at best.

Duke has shown the International

Paralympic Committee feed for much of the past fortnight, meaning they had no control over what sports were being shown and when.

Yes, they have a couple of people in studio chatting amongst themselves with no real polish, but too many Kiwi athletes have not had their big moments shown on television and that is unacceptable.

Now, I have a mild form of cerebral palsy, but I’m no champion of the disabled, at least not as much as I should be.

Growing up in the 1990s, I was told never to make a big deal about my disability and get on with life, advice, which has served me well for the most part.

However, these Kiwi Paralympic athletes should not be treated as second-class sporting citizens anymore.

They don’t need 12 dedicated channels like the Olympics had last month but they deserve to have every medal winning opportunity played live in their

own country.

How else are other disabled people meant to be inspired to strive for more in their lives?

If TVNZ cannot provide live coverage of key Kiwi moments, then they should not bid for the rights to broadcast the event in Paris in three years time.

The fact no one could watch Lisa Adams in the discus final on Saturday night was a disgrace.

Paralympians need to stand up and demand better and Olympians

should do the same.

A dedicated channel covering medal winning moments of New Zealanders is not too much to ask in 2021 and should not be too much to ask in 2024.

I feel sorry for many of the athletes whose achievements may have been recognised but not truly appreciated due to the outdated efforts of TVNZ. The national broadcaster must push to be better next time or stay out of the way.

What’s the best medicine to take when this latest edition of the COVID-19 thing blows over? How about a dose of adrenalin and some awesome bike racing action?

Head to the Cemetery Circuit web site for news and ticket options for the 2021 edition of the always popular Suzuki International Series.

Expect to be royally entertained with live motorcycle racing in the three-round Suzuki International Series, preparations well advanced and everyone looking forward to going racing, despite another year of interference from that dreaded pandemic.

“Rider entries are coming fast and furious,”series organiser Allan ‘Flea’ Willacy says.

“We have again been given good support from sponsors, especially from Suzuki New Zealand and we will be running the same classes that proved popular last year.”

He believes it is going to be another scorching summer of motorcycling this year with the annual

Suzuki International Series roadrace competition again absolutely swamped with entries. Willacy reckons he will again have trouble fitting them all in.

Willacy is overjoyed with the huge interest being shown by riders and he believes the 2021 edition of the series, set to kick off at Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park on December 4-5, will be massive.

Manfeild follows as host venue a week later, on December 11-12, and the action wraps up on the public streets of Whanganui’s famous Cemetery Circuit on Boxing Day (that’s December 26, in case you’d forgotten).

The first two rounds will again be two-dayers – first day for practice, qualifying and a single sprint race, while day two will feature two red-hot races for each bike class.

This popular series is New Zealand’s most esteemed motorcycle competition and it has again attracted a huge number of topcalibre riders.

Whakatane’s Mitch Rees won

the Suzuki International Series in the premier Formula One class in 2020, before going on to win the 2021 national superbike crown a few months later, and he will hope to defend both those crowns this time around, although that will be no easy task.

Taupo’s Scott Moir, the Suzuki International Series outright winner in 2017 and again in 2018, is determined to win again and Suzuki’s 2019 national superbike champion Daniel Mettam, from Glen Eden, won’t be taking a back seat either.

They will be joined again in the Suzuki superbike ranks this year by the 2020 New Zealand Supersport 600 champion from Whanganui, Richie Dibben, and while it’ll only be Dibben’s second season on a 1000cc bike, it pays not to ignore the likely threat he’ll pose.

As always, the third and final round of the series, on the public streets of Whanganui’s worldrenowned Cemetery Circuit on Boxing Day (December 26), will bring fans the excitement and closeness that only street

Two girls to watch in the junior women’s motocross scene in New Zealand are Penny and Hazel Lang, says Motorcycling New Zealand (MNZ) women’s commissioner Sandra Perry.

“Penny, just about to turn 13, and Hazel, aged 10, have had lots of help from their mother, Melissa Mudgway, herself a former women’s motocross front runner, in learning the basics – it’s young women like this competing we want to see more of. They’re our future,”Sandra says.

“Both parents, the wider family and clubs have nurtured these

two amazingly talented young women and this is what the MNZ Women’s Commission is about.

“It probably helps that motocross runs in the family with the two girls having the support of their uncle Aaron Mudgway and cousin Daryl Hurley.

“The Lang sisters started racing in March 2016, with Penny now New Zealand No.2 in the 12-16 years’ grade and Hazel national No.2 in the 8-11 years’ division.

“If any sport wants to thrive the culture has to be positive, progressive and inclusive – this is a great sport – we need to make it a positive experience for girls who want to be involved and attractive

to the majority of girls who may want to give it a go,” says father and husband Nick Lang.

“The Women’s Commission is about changing the culture so it is conducive to inclusion, growth and most importantly enjoyment – my girls, their friends and the sport will be all the better for it.

“I would love to see clubs host flat track or natural terrain riding as well as support and promote the novice and junior girls’ classes to get more girls along to give it a go and have fun with their friends,” said Nick Lang.
