After enduring weeks of a nusiance prowler banging on the window at his home Wainuiomata Reverend Bill Ingley wants the police to take action. At the very least he would like to see policing staff available in Wainuiomata 24 hours a day and the local police station staffed. Just how difficult it was to get help was bought home to him when he had to call the police for assistance a few months ago. “Something woke me up about midnight and I got up and opened the curtain and there was a face steering back at me so I dropped the curtain and picked up the phone and called the police. Continued on page 2. Long wait for police Continued from page 1. “I waited and waited and the police finally arrived after threequarters of an hour apologising because they had to come from Upper Hutt and they were the only ones in the region,” Bill says. Even though they arrived long after the incident he says the police officers did have a look
around but found no trace of the prowler. “I expected to get some sort of report or acknowledgment but never heard a dicky bird from them.” The middle of the night window knocker continued to come back every six or seven days for around three months Bill says. “I didn’t know what to do but
one day while it was going on I saw a senior sergeant just down the road from my place and I stopped and told him about it and he said if it kept happening to give the police a call, I did and never heard a thing back,” Bill says. He wrote to the officer and has heard nothing. Bill says he has approached
local MP’s from both parties and there is still no action on a better policing service for Wainuiomata. He says as a last resort he wrote to the Minister of Police Stuart Nash and told him his greatgrandfather would be turning in his grave if saw the state of the police, and also heard nothing back that time either.

It was all hands on deck at Konini School on Saturday with the planting of 1000 trees planted on the school’s new nature walk. It all started at 9.00 am, with locals in the community getting busy with barrows and spades, digging holes and shifting mulch, helping to plant around 1000 trees along the walkway. We hope that it develops and grows until it becomes an outdoor classroom where play-based learning can happen, organiser and teacher at Konini School, Bonni Ramage, says. “Our aim is for our students to connect with nature with having an outdoor learning environment and to teach students to be kaitiaki of nature. “It gives them lots of opportunities to learn immersed in that environment, particularly understanding the role that plants, insects and animals have within an ecosystem, because sustainability is so important for their futures and understanding how it works,” Bonni says The project initially started with an inquiry by the senior students in 2017 when the old playground was taken down.

Students took it upon themselves to create a survey where they talked to students and parents of the school to see what they wanted from
the outdoor space and what they wanted to achieve, according to Bonni. The 114-meter walkway was planted out with an array
of native trees. Once the planting was finished all who took part were treated to a sausage sizzle for lunch.

Briggs standing again By Gerald Rillstone
Councillor Josh Briggs has announced he will be standing for re-election as the Wainuiomata Ward Councillor in the upcoming Hutt City Council elections. Josh says he has had a successful first term as a City Councillor and would like to continue being the voice for Wainuiomata residents around the Council table.

“I have enjoyed my first term on Council and it would be a privilege to continue to serve my community,” Josh says. He says he has shown leadership around issues such as the living wage, homelessness and core council services. “I am a strong and passionate supporter and haven’t been afraid to speak up about issues that have a big impact on the community.”

This will be the first election where City Councillors will be elected in a mix of ward and city wide positions. Previously there were two Ward Councillors for Wainuiomata, but now there will only be one and Josh says he will provide consistency for the community of Wainuiomata if re-elected. “Wainuiomata is my home, this is the community I want to represent,” he says.

Road Safety As part of Road Safety Week (Monday 6 May to Sunday 12 May) and following a series of devastating fatal crashes in April, Police and the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) are reminding all drivers to take road safety seriously and do their part to help keep everyone on the road safe. This year 143 people have already lost their lives on our roads – eight more than this time last year and the highest year-to-date figure since 2009. Police National Manager of Road Policing, Superintendent Steve Greally, and NZTA’s General Manager of Safety, Health and Environment, Greg Lazzaro, say Road Safety Week couldn’t come at a better time.

World famous bugman Ruud Kleimpaste arrived at Konini school this week to the delight of students and teachers. Ruud was at the school in his capacity as official ambassador for the Treemendous School initiative. He has been an unofficial ambassador since the project began, providing another level of education to Treemendous events. Ruud uses the environment as a context for education and tells stories about how nature and the planet operates on a sustainable level. “We can learn a lot from our Biodiversity – especially from the bugs” he says. His aim is to inspire both students and teachers to use their outdoor learning areas as a source

Bouncing babies at library Wainuiomata’s Library was filled with laughter and chatter this week as the bouncing babies group got under way. A weekly half-hour programme of songs, rhymes and fingerplays especially for children aged 0-2 years and their parent/caregiver. One of the reasons for the group is to help build a foundation for literacy which starts as soon as a child is born, and every story, song, rhyme or fingerplay strengthens that foundation. The get-together is designed to help toddlers get a head start by joining other parents and their little ones for companionship, fun and interaction.

Queen Street mini makeover Love Wainuiomata collaborated with Scouts New Zealand recently to achieve a Queen St mini-makeover for the community with the help of over 170 Rovers. Esther King of Love Wainuiomata says: “A vibrant town centre is an essential part of our community’s vision, and we worked with the Rovers on projects that would make Queen St feel loved and more like home.” “The makeover includes a new decking area by the library which we’ll activate as a performance, relaxing and family zone, making 16 planter boxes which will pop up over the coming weeks, giving a lot of love and colour to the Fairy Garden. “We made the tables and benches more inviting with a big sanding, painting and staining session, brightening the pavement by the mall entrance with kids’ games like hopscotch, and washing local shops and businesses,” she says. “We were so impressed with

achieved and we’re incredibly grateful for the ongoing positive impact it will have.” The volunteer service came about as the Rovers, the young adult branch of Scouting New Zealand, were having their
national Moot at Brookfield. They kindly donated the afternoon to support Love Wainuiomata projects in Queen Street. Local volunteers and local business Exciting Future Solutions also helped out.

Three needles faster than two
Oldskool Bike By Gerald Rillstone
A flash from the past outside Wainuiomata Library this week was an old-style Raleigh 20 harking back to the years when riding a bike was cool. Mark Shanks discovered this gem of a bike just over a year ago while on a trip north to fetch a car tyre from a wreckers. “I was at the wreckers and out
of the corner of my eye I spotted it and asked if it was for sale and the guy said ‘how much will you give me?’” Mark says. They agreed on $40 and Mark took it home. “All it needed was a tyre to be pumped up and that was it,” he says. Mark rode the bike over from Belmont in Lower Hutt on the shared path and admitted he did have to get off and push
for a bit. “I’m not trying to break records riding it and it might be a bit slower than some modern bikes but while I’m riding there are things to see and I’m thinking at the same time,” he says. Raleigh 20’s were made from 1968 into the late 1980’s and were a huge success with 147,000 being made and sold in 1975 in the United Kingdom alone.

Gathering for the mutual love of crafts and knitting Louisa Burns of Wainuiomata is a crafty volunteer who is knitting not only for the enjoyment of the craft but also as a way of supporting charities. Louisa says her current project is a three by three blanket knitted corner to corner with three needles and will go to the cancer society. “It is not made to be sold but for
those who need a blanket or a hat I have knitted a lot of them in the past,” she says. Lousia is also part of a group in Lower Hutt called Crafty Volunteers who knit and make things for a range of charities and has been knitting for more than sixty five years. Even though it is a craft of yesterday Louisa used the internet to work out how to make this blanket. “I looked it up on facebook and saw how to go about it,” she says.

Cyclocross for all ages By Gerald Rillstone
Cyclocross comes to Wainuiomata later this month with the fi rst in a series of events and the first time in Wainuiomata. Helping to boost the events profile and helping out with sponsorship is Wainuiomata’s Ben Powell, a keen cyclist all his life and owner of Johnsonville Cycles and Servicing. Ben says the sport is open to anyone who can ride a bike and there are grades to cater for all abilities which can range from a 10 minute Kids’ race, to A Grade for the more experienced. “It depends on what you want to do but we have multiple laps around a short circuit, gravel trails and a few other new circuits,” he says. Although there are purposebuilt bikes for the sport the organisers do allow the use of any style of bike in C and B grade with A grade for the more serious and well set up cyclist. Unlike most cycling events Cyclocross races are run by time rather than distance. So you know exactly how long

you’re signing up for, and the aim of the game is to complete as many laps as you can.
A mountain bike, road bike or a hybrid will do the trick if you are keen to give it a go, Ben
says advantage of cyclocross is that it’s accessible for a range of bikes, so whatever you’ve got,
the odds are good that you can use it to get your feet wet before committing to a new bike.
barich, think the trip is going to be “pretty cool”. “We’re excited about the new experience,” Jack says. Currently, the team is fundraising as much as they can to get themselves over to Japan and find sponsors to help all the boys get their uniforms, which includes clothing for games, training and leisure. Their fundraising efforts so far have mainly included hangi’s,
raffles and quiz nights. Plus approaching local business in hopes of gaining a sponsorship for one of the boy’s uniforms. The next quiz night is planned for June 15 at 7pm at the Fitzroy Tavern. Tickets are $20.
Rugby boys off to Japan By Megan Connolly
To coincide with the Rugby World Cup, 22 Wainuiomata High School Rugby students will be heading off to Japan in September to experience the game in a whole other way. The trip has been months in the making and is the last opportunity for many of the boys, particularly the senior students, to experience something to-
gether as a group. “Its quite special because many of these boys have played together since they were five years old” according to one of the organisers and mums, Jane Law. This is the first trip of its kind for sport and rugby at Wainuiomata High School. Four adults and three teachers will be accompanying the team during their two-week stay in
Japan. The boys will even get the opportunity to stay with host families and really immerse themselves into the culture. “They’re an amazing bunch of kids and really deserve the opportunity to go. “They’ve worked really hard and kept motivated,” Jane says. After 44 years with the organisation, soil conservator Stan Braaksma ,is hanging up his boots and retiring from the Greater Wellington Regional Council. While many things have changed over Stan’s career, his dedication and fascination in planting anti-erosion trees and improving the environment remains prevalent. Stan says over his time working in the land management sector he has been given the licence to ‘play’ and gain a vast amount of knowledge in his field. “I’ve been given really good freedoms to be able to innovate and experiment in the region, giving me a lot of experience with a number of tree species. I’ve gone on to get a huge amount of skill in forestry,” Stan says. Stan was among the first to identify and initiate planting of eucalyptus trees in the fight against erosion, alongside other species such as kowhai and his beloved willow and stands of poplar trees – referred to as poles. “Last year 24,000 poles were planted and we’re regularly getting over 90 per cent survival rates which is all because of this control of directing the planting and owning the processes.” Greater Wellington Land Management manager David Boone says those recurring pole orders are a testament not only to Stan’s knowledge of his subject but also his

commitment to providing the best possible soil conservation advice to farmers. “There’s a need with this work to get private landowners on board – in rural communities in particular, it’s basically good old fashioned people skills.” Outside of his day job, Stan’s name is also synonymous with the Ballance Farm Environment Awards where he has served as a regional council representative and finalist

judge since 2002. In recent years that has included becoming involved in all aspects of farming, promoting everything from ‘gate to plate’ food entrants to more unusual cottage industries like judging a witloof farm. A competitive soccer player till the age of 59, Stan intends to keep active post-retirement including maintaining farm forestry and consultancy work – made possible by the skills he gained at Greater Wellington.

Warriors roll the dice on Nikorima As the Warriors chuck quick money at their halves problem by bringing in Kiwi Kodi Nikorima, it highlights the issue with the club. Shaun Johnson must have a slight smirk in Cronulla as the club he left under a cloud in February has been forced to make a hospital pass decision to lure Nikorima, the Broncos half, to Auckland.
When Johnson left, Warriors fans were told by the club that the phone was running hot with players wanting to be amongst the New Zealand franchise. Like many things with the Warriors, that was predictable hyperbole. The forking out of the cash not even midway through the season
is an admission that the current state of affairs simply is not good enough. Nikorima is a talented 25-yearold who has played 86 NRL games. He’s young enough to make a decent impression and he’s signed through to the end of the 2021 season.
The sceptic in me still ponders if he was that great a player, why would the Broncos, who are having a terrible season themselves, let him go in the middle of a campaign? This outcome is the best the Warriors could do given the situation. They have likely overpaid for Nikorima’s services but luring the
best players across the Tasman has meant they’ve done that for years. Without this roll of the dice, and that’s what it is, the Warriors’ season would have gone nowhere. Of course, it may still pan out to go nowhere, but that wouldn’t be a new outcome for a Warriors campaign, would it? After all, it’s just a matter of faith.

School Old Girls 39 Following last week’s upset loss, Aute came back with a comprehensive win over High School Old Girls. Aute had a steady start with some accurate feeding into shooter Sarah McLeod-Venu leading the first quarter by 16-8. Defenders Valerie Taito, Alofa Aberdein-Tapuai and Lace Tangianau worked well providing turnovers and bringing the ball smoothly through the court for the shooters to score. Aute increased their lead at half time to 36-20 with some smart feeding by midcourter twins Alicia and Maryanne Tomokino-Geale. The Tomokino-Geale twins combined well with their sister Crystal Tomokino giving some excellent ball to McLeod-Venu who slotted the goals with ease. “We had a good training this week and so very pleased to come up with a good win,” says co-coach Alannah Laban. Premier 1: Ulalei Pua 84 Maidstone
36 Ulalei Pua served up another masterclass performance, turning the opposition inside out. The defensive unit of Paula Te Huna and Hayley Mellon suffocated the attacking options by Maidstone, creating turnover ball which was converted by the goal shooters Bronwyn Pelenise and Alicia Hina. It was impressive netball, pretty to watch. Senior 1: Ulalei Fuefuesina 40 Convent Old Girls 29 Ulalei Fuefuesina, the young guns of the Club are now 3 wins from 3 games. After a slow first half where Fuefuesina were down 17-16, the whole team stepped up with turnover ball throughout the court and some smart feeding by Tahaani Hepi and Crystal Ruatara. Shooters Montana Hepi and Bree Itula could easily convert the goals taking the lead at ¾ time 28-24. Fuefuesina continued to dominate
the game stretching out the lead in the final quarter. Senior 2: Ulalei Moso’oi 26 Stokes Valley Rugby 18 Ulalei Moso’oi celebrated its first victory of the season. Ulalei started strongly with goal shooting duo, sisters Katy Kosega and Stacey Kosega shooting long and accurately. Ulalei led 14-8 by half time. Stokes Valley Rugby made a mini-come back in the 3rd quarter to close the gap to 20-18. In the final quarter the defensive unit of Summer Pere, Melesete Sagaga and Lei-Marie Rooney completely shut down the opposition who failed to score a goal in the final quarter. Draw for May 11 2019 at Walter Nash Centre, Taita: Premier 1: Ulalei Aute v Ulalei Pua 9am Senior 1: Ulalei Fuefuesina v Naenae Collegians 12pm Senior 2: Ulalei Moso’oi v Maidstone 3pm

For the first time in the history of the sport Wainuiomata has an under 15 girls’ rugby league team. Team manager Teejae Maxwell says the team played last season for the first time and enjoyed it so much they were all keen to give it another bash this year in the under 15-year-old grade.
The only problem is there is limited competition in the region for them. “This is them going from under 12 grade last year straight to under 15 girls and the Wainui team and the Titahi Bay Marlins girls team are the only two in this grade,” Teejae says. She says the big challenge is to find other teams to play but it is early days and Teejae hopes other clubs
or schools will get on board. At the moment Titahi Bay and Wainuiomata Under 15 Girls have to play each other every week and win or lose they all enjoy getting on the field. “The whole team goes to school together and for some of them it is their first time at it, but it’s all about having fun and playing League,” Teejae says.
