Kokiri Marae manager Teresea Olsen has been award one of the top 100 Kiwibank Local Hero awarded medals.

It has come as a huge surprise to Teresea who says the award is not so much recognising her work but the work of the whole team of 100 plus connected to Kokiri. “I got notified in an email and I thought it was just spam and checked up on it and it was true and I have no idea who nominated me,�

An award for the team Continued from page 1 “When I looked at some of the others who were nominated I thought it was just a privilege to be nominated among them and those others that were nominated are outstanding.”

Getting the award is not something that is ever intentionally worked towards Teresea says the work she and the team at Kokiri do what the do because it needs doing.

“You don’t think particularly what you are doing is that great you just do because it is needed.”

She is not sure what comes with it apart from an email that said in a few weeks she would receive something special.

“I thought they might send me a Christmas box that would be nice then I can share it with everybody.”

“It is recognition of the organisation and the people in the organisa-

tion and that is what is important,” she says.

She highlights that fact that when Covid struck she never imagined that they would have to close down or that people wouldn’t be able to work.

“One of my staff came in with big tears rolling down her face and she said please don’t make me stay at home, because she meet the criteria, and I said if I had a hundred of

you could save the world and there we always knew that the people we had here were special but during that time they made an even bigger impact and those are the people our success,” Teresea says.

The 2021 Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year Award – Te Pou Toko o te Tau – the kiwi is for people who have made an enormous difference in their community over the past year.

Pukeatua Whanau garden makeover Pukeatua School got a huge boost for its garden recently when workers from Citycare Property set to work preparing it for the growing season.

The local community will have vegetables galore after Citycare Property’s overhaul of the Whanau garden area situated behind the Junior classes.

Libby Nanai and Tom along with a fantastic team of amazing workers from Citycare Property weeded the garden, added mulch, top soil and compost to make our soil even better and then donated a variety of seedlings that they planted with Room’s 2 and 4.

They also used old carpets the school had been collecting for a few years, to

make pathways between the garden.

As a last step in giving support they are also going to replace some of the fence pails and will then paint the fence too.

Citycare Property Contract Manager Tom Cookson says the vegetable garden had overgrown over the year but the Citycare Property team got stuck in to help out by pruning the fruit trees, digging over all the beds, laying mulch over all the grass so the kids can garden even on muddy days, and then laid topsoil and added compost to the beds.

The school pupils joined in for planting spinach, silverbeet, lettuce, corn, tomatoes, rhubarb, various herbs, sugar

snap peas, carrots, pumpkins and cucumbers.

They also planted lavender and borage to encourage bees and marigolds to keep all of the other bugs out.

“Citycare is committed to creating positive social, cultural and environmental outcomes in our workplace and communities,” Tom says.

“After completing a project on the school roof and windows earlier in the year, it was important to support the local community by helping out in this way”, he says.

A sp e cia l t ha n k s to Citycare’s local supplier, McMud Earthworks, who donated a huge truckload of mulch and enough topsoil and compost for all of the garden beds.

Remakery celebrates with Pataka

One of the staunch supporters of Wainuiomata’s Pataka, The Remakery celebrated with a Christmas party and helped out getting the new garden underway at the Pataka.

Remakery founder Julia Milne says they have been coming over every week to help out and decided to put in a combined effort building the gardens, cooking, knitting and sewing as a together day.

“Today was about getting the gardens in and we bought our sewing machines over and we are teaching sewing and knitting.”

“We bought some venison to cook, someone in our community does a bit of hunting and donated it,” Julia says.

During Covid there were a lot of community groups that wanted to establish their own food hub and during the lock-down The Remakery partnered with Kokiri to help get their whanau fed by making a couple of thousand

meals a week and distributing them and from there decided to keep the relationship going and build on it.

“We have got some support around us from funders and we are doing this together now and it is about learning together,” Julia says.

“Kokiri comes and spends time with us at The Remakery to learn and they are still picking up meals as their kitchen isn’t set up yet.”

Julia explains their style of gardening used is also quite different

than home gardening.

Rather than digging the soil over the garden is built up on the existing ground and every thing is built out of waste.

The ReMakery is a place to rebuild, restructure and redefine old, out-of-date things.

It is a place to create a new way, starting with the best of what we already know, and the best of what we already have.

It is a place for sharing knowledge, time and skills, and for learning.

Mr Lazzaro says a new Waka Kotahi advertising campaign launched yesterday supports that message by targeting drivers who have developed a sense of complacency about the risk of impaired driving.

They know that drinking increases their chance of crashing, and they know the consequences of being

stopped by Police, but they’re still willing to take the chance.

“Anyone can make a mistake when driving, but alcohol impairment can turn that mistake into a life changing, tragic event.

Superintendent Gini Welch says Police will be working hard throughout the holidays and all summer long to keep everyone safe.

“We’ll be doing everything we can to prevent drink-driving through im-

pairment check points and random roadside testing.

But we also ask people to make responsible decisions that don’t risk lives.

Getting students active

Early bird registrations for Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Movin’March are open - calling all schools to sign up to the month-long initiative that encourages students to walk, cycle and scoot to school.

Greater Wellington travel choice coordinator Kirsty Barr says so far 82 schools have jumped on board, and schools across the region have until 11th December to sign up to be in the draw to win one of six $100 Prezzy Cards.

“This year, Movin’March saw an impressive 129 schools taking part, that’s potentially over 37,000 students getting active on the way to or from school!

“It was an amazing turnout given the disruptions schools experienced with COVID-19, but the nature of the programme is very flexible so we can adapt quickly to changes – so

we’re looking forward to a similar or slightly better turnout in 2021.”

Community feedback was loud and clear that Movin’March gave children and whanau positive and fun things to focus on during a time of uncertainty.

This year the programme took on a greener outlook by launching new, kinderon-the-planet merchandise that also integrates more te Reo resources. School communities received this new look and feel with open arms and enthusiasm.

“In 2021 we will continue to have strong sustainability themes, and we’ll also keep the Movin’Minds competition running where students get a chance to win a Weta Cave Experience tour by creating a mini movie or slideshow,” says Kirsty.

“Schools can register at any time until March 2021,

but to go in to win one of six Prezzy Cards they need to get in before 11th December.”

Greater Wellington’s goal is to see engagement numbers grow even bigger than this year, which climbed up to an impressive 88,675 walking and wheeling trips logged by students across the region.

Greater Wellington councillor and Transport Committee Chair Roger Blakeley says, “We really encourage all schools to get involved and inspire their students and families to get active.

“It’s a fun way for families to get to school and for older students to feel independent while walking or biking with their mates. Being active is essential for young people’s wellbeing,” adds Cr Blakeley.

Jacob deals to rodents

What started as a passion project for Jacob Kawai grew into a more in-depth interest in clearing Wainuiomata High School of rodents.

Jacob started building traps and getting interested in predator free as part of a passion project at school and once he got started and saw the results of what he was doing he decided to carry on.

“People in the group and wanted to trap and I got involved and helped set up the traps. They had already

built the traps and I set up where they should go, Jacob says.

“I put them in places around the school where they weren’t visible so students wouldn’t tamper with them and it went really well and we caught a few hedgehogs and mice and quite a few rats.”

He estimates around 10 rats have been caught so far and hopes to be able to expand the project into Wainuiomata Intermediate.

Jacob has always been interested in conservation and the environment and trapping he felt was a good

“There has been very big drop in the numbers caught and I have tried moving the traps to different locations just in case the pests have got used to avoiding them,” he says.

There are some morality issues around killing an animal Jacob says but he sees it as a necessary thing to do to have a predator free New Zealand.

Next year will be his last year at Wainuiomata High and he says he has an interest in working in horticulture or political science.

Birds eating crops and being annoying: By Wally Richards Birds are wonderful in the garden, bringing us their tuneful talk, their flitting from place to place and their hungry appetite for pests and bugs.

We encourage birds by planting native shrubs that they feed on, setting up food stations to attract them and bird baths also.

Many of us feed the birds by throwing out stale bread and scraps. But at times birds become a curse when they eat our crops of fruit, destroy our seedlings, toss bark from gardens onto paths or lawns and feed on our freshly sown lawn seed.

So we have this enigma, we want the birds in our gardens but we want them to behave themselves and we don’t want them eating our crops and doing damage or making extra work for us.

This is a problem that has worried gardeners for untold time and there is nothing worse than seeing most of your strawberries, plums, apples etc. being eaten by birds or damaged to the point where they are not suitable for our use.

I spoke to a farmer’s wife recently who has a well-established orchard on the farm with over 100 various fruit trees. She told me that she considered herself lucky if she was able to get one percent of the fruit for their own use.

Birds often attack the fruit long before it ripens and they do not just eat a few fruit completely, they peck a bit out leaving the fruit damaged and to rot prematurely on the tree.

Last season I found birds eating my green tomatoes that were not even fully grown.

I receive many complaints from gardeners with bark gardens and every day they have to sweep bark off paths or pick it up off the lawn.

Garden Enterprises and Key Industries have searched the world for remedies that could solve the problem but did not hurt the birds. We looked at and trialled various products and most of them were a total waste of time.

Then a few years ago we discovered a space age product that worked extremely well in trials.

It is a special metallic tape that is called Bird Scare Flash Tape. A metal tape that is red on one side and silver on the reverse. 2.5cm wide and 150cm long. You take small lengths (say 30cm) and fix on stakes or branches.

It is very light and flutters in the slightest breeze which scares most birds for a while till they become

used to it.

This makes it a good temporary fix while fruit is ripening.

We tried it in an area of the country side where birds are a real problem; 3 rows of cauliflower seedlings were planted side by side in 50 foot rows.

Thirty feet of the ribbon was suspended between two stakes, 2 foot above the 3 rows. The ribbon was twirled like a Xmas decoration.

The results were that the seedlings about a metre or so beyond the ribbon were completely destroyed by the birds, but not any damage could be observed on the ribbon protected plants, which grew happily to maturity.

The ribbon is best applied before any damage happens as it is easier to deter birds before they start feeding on a crop rather than break a habit (which may or may not work so well).

The ribbon is best strung between two stakes or branches where it is free to twirl in the mildest breeze. It should be within close proximity of the crop you wish to protect.

Say on tomatoes in a row, a run of ribbon about midway up the stakes

and another at the top of the stakes maybe best.

In bark gardens you should run the ribbon between stakes about 2 foot tall near the edge where the bark is kicked onto the lawn or path.

Leave in position for about a month or two and then remove as I would think at some time the tape would not work as birds become accustomed to it.

You can always put it back when damage starts to occur. A garden edging that is too tall for the birds to kick the bark over is a permanent fix.

Early cricket musings for the summer ahead Some interesting early talking points two weeks into the international cricket season.

All world class test teams have a quality spinner, and New Zealand

does not and none seem to be emerging from the lower levels.

We will get away with that on our seamer-friendly pitches but overseas, we’ll be ruthlessly exposed with both bat and ball.

Times, they are changing and some investment in finding emerging spin talent would serve the Black Caps well in the future.

For now, the cupboard looks a little empty.

Road-racing season is now underway

By Andy McGechan This popular three-round Suzuki International Series is New Zealand’s most esteemed motorcycle competition and it has again attracted a huge number of top-calibre riders, particularly this year with the country now virtually free of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

The racing at Sunday’s opening round at Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park certainly offered an appetising foretaste of the brilliant racing to come over the next few weeks.

Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon, on the outskirts of Feilding, follows as host venue for round two this coming Sunday, December 13, and the Suzuki International Series action wraps up, as it traditionally does, on the public streets of Whanganui, riders tearing around the worldfamous Cemetery Circuit, on Boxing Day (Saturday, December 26).

Series organiser Allan ‘Flea’ Willacy said members of the public

Bike fans simply fizzed at being a part of the first major motorcycle road-race event in New Zealand since the pandemic lock-down, with Sunday’s racing under a warm, clear sky absolutely perfect for thrilling handlebar-to-handlebar action throughout all of the 12 various bike categories.

This three-round competition traditionally signals the start to the new season and always attracts the cream of the motorcycling community, riders keen to show off and test their bikes and their skills ahead of the national championships, set for the South Island in January and in the North Island in March 2021, and so would also stand as a litmus test for that championship series.

“The crowds were great and the racing was fantastic,” enthused Willacy afterwards.

“There were a few upsets among the results and a few crashes too, so I think there will be a few riders with a point to prove at rounds two and three.

“The GIXXER 150 class racing was particularly good to watch.

Actually, across the board, all the racing was splendid.

“We are looking forward to Manfeild this coming weekend, where we anticipate it will again be tight battling at the front of the fields.”
