Whilst the recent announcement the station will be operational sometime soon is encouraging supporters of the petition want the community to focus on the real goal, having the station manned 24/7.

A recent assult near the Wainuomata Pools was a perfect example of the need for the station to be manned with a local who did not want to be identified, contacting the Wainuiomata News saying it took the police 45 minutes to arrive after the assault was reported.

They say one of the problems is the group of around 20 young people know they can get away with what they are doing as they are under the age of prosecution and the only way the communities voices will he heard enmasse is to have a petition.

From the officers locals have spoken to, all have said

there is a need for a fully functional community police station in Wainuiomata 24/7.

A social worker also spoke to senior members in the Hutt police and was told that Wainuiomata, when it came to youth crime and serious young offenders, is at the top of the list.

They say the comments in the petition tell the story of how it actually is here, not from MPs etc that just fly in for visits, they don’t experience it.

The people of Wainuiomata have had enough. We need police presence here ASAP..... before someone gets seriously hurt. The assaults/burglaries/ property damage is almost an everyday occurrence here.

inbrief news WRFC Rarotonga trip Wainuiomata Rugby Football club are looking to have a trip to Rarotonga in September this year (dates to be confirmed).

They are looking to have a meeting on Friday 11th February 2022 at the Rugby Club to discuss and anyone with an interest can put their name down.

Janice takes on new role

A major force in building Wainuomata Kokori Marae Pataka, Janice Awatere, is moving on to take up a new role in Kokori’s organisation.

Janice has managed the Pataka since its inception at the start of the COVID pandemic and at the height of the demand the team was going outside of Wainuiomata to Wellington, Porirua, Tawa, Upper Hutt, Lower hutt and reaching right up to Waitangarua to supply food.

She says the success of the Pataka

is because of the Tihei team, “they really got it going because they set up the whole thing and that team was made up of social workers and youth workers and had never done anything like this in their whole lives and came together to build the Pataka.”

It is with sadness that Janice moves on to a new position work ing with parents from Oranga Tamariki.

“My background is with social work and I will be working with parents who have had their kids taken into care and talking

to them about trauma and other things that our kids have experienced which is a lot different than kids in mainstream environments,” Janice says.

“I will be working to see what resources we can give them to make the placement easier.”

She says most of all she will miss the team she has built at the Pataka.

Most of them have been with her from the start.

“I am excited about the new position but I am sad about leaving and I want to thank all the organisations that have contributed

and Kerri Brown. She has helped a lot and the staff are so dedicated to the kaupapa and I don’t have any reserves about leaving and it will never fail,” Janice says.

“We have managed well even though the funding has been pretty small and we have been through three lock – downs and have provided way more than fifty thousand meals. It couldn’t be done without the community support from people like Clives Chemist, the Remakery, Countdown, and all the knitting people who helped with blankets.”

Mandate is probably not the best way to describe rules.

I see them as good advice.

I am not in favour of them.

There needs to be a better way of doing things.

Yes there needs to be guidance when challenges come up.

Parents and drivers – keep children safe Parents and drivers play an important role in keeping children safe from harm as they cycle, walk, bus, and scooter their way back to school.

Police are encouraging parents to talk to their children about being safe around roads, and to remember to be safe themselves when they’re on the road.

“Young children can be excitable and can be distracted when they’re heading to and from school.

That means they may forget to

check before passing driveways, or miss hazards on the roads.

So it’s important to instil in them just how important being safe around roads is,” Superintendent Steve Greally, Director National Road Policing Centre says.

Police are also reminding drivers about how to behave near schools and around school buses.

“If you break the rules – your children will think it’s OK for them to break the rules.

That can put lives in danger,

so be a good example for your children.

“Drivers also need to watch their speed around schools and be extra alert in case a child runs out in front of them without warning.

Children can make mistakes, so always be aware.

Sometimes children can’t be seen if they are behind cars so look under cars for the possibility of feet.

Stay below the 30km/h speed limit for passing schools and

below 20km/h speed limit when passing school buses.

“Even small increases in speed result in a much greater increase in your stopping distance, and that can mean the difference between life and death for our children.”

“It is also important to remind them of these safety messages frequently, even as they become young adults.

As teenagers they may be more prone to having their heads down in a phone, wearing earphones,

and potentially not paying attention when they should be, such as when crossing a road.”

Police suggest parents sit down with their kids before the end of the holidays and have a conversation around road safety rules.

“If your child will be going to school on their own for the first time, show them the safest route to get to school and back home and practice with them, including the safest places to cross,” he says.

Pataka clothing alterations

Wainuiomata’s Pataka is offering a clothing alteration service for locals.

Deb McIvor says they will be available to do curtains and school uniforms or any other item that needs altering.

The big thing at the start of the year is to get your school uniform altered and if it needs to be adjusted

to make it liveable for the year we can do it,” Deb says.

“We have done quite a few clothing alterations and it is not well known where to go in the valley and we will have a seamstress on one day a week.”

There will be a small charge that will go to the Pataka.

They will also give advice on dressing for success for job interviews.

Call for Stories The Maori Language Commission is calling for help collecting stories, images and memories that trace the ongoing battle to save the Maori language.

“The battle for the survival of te reo Maori has been fought by generations of people, in our smallest towns to our biggest cities. On our televisions, in our schools, at our workplaces: and importantly in our own homes. Those stories need to be told and saved,” Maori Language

Commissioner, Professor Rawinia Higgins says.

“We are keen for young New Zealanders to interview their parents and elders: What was it like in Aotearoa when they were growing up?

Where did they see or hear te reo?”

“This year marks some significant milestones so we are encouraging individuals, families and communities to share a story, memory or memento that help tell the stories of the battle for our country’s first

language.”

2022 will also see the first Matariki public holiday, something the commission began lobbying for more than 20-years-ago.

“The one thing that hasn’t changed over all these years is that te reo still needs the support of New Zealanders if it is to survive and thrive. We know it takes one generation to lose a language and three to get it back: The countdown is on.”

The commission also released the

findings of four years of Colmar/ Kantar public opinion polling.

More New Zealanders than ever before see te reo as part of their identity as a New Zealander and that speaking te reo is something to be proud of.

35-years ago when te reo became an official language of New Zealand, many feared that te reo would divide us. But in 2022 te reo brings us together. It is the language of Aotearoa and everyone who calls

Aotearoa home.

From the days when it was banned, to protest marches and petitions, Treaty of Waitangi claims, counter claims and cases taken to the Privy Council and back: the battle for te reo was waged everywhere from our dinner tables to the highest courts on earth. It is a taonga for all New Zealanders to cherish, now and into the future.”

The commission will launch its 2022 digital platform next month.

Neighbours encouraged to work together With the possibility of many people self-isolating over the coming months, Neighbourhood Support New Zealand want to highlight a few key things that we can all do during this time to make sure we are best prepared at home and in our neighbourhoods.

Chief Executive, Tess Casey, says there’s every chance that over the next while people could find that their usual support networks, such as family and friends, may not be available to help in the case of required self-isolation.

She suggests that this is where a neighbourhood support group will come in very handy and implores communities to think about establishing one for their neighbourhood if they have not done so already.

A neighbourhood support

group can help people establish networks within their communities so that they are never short on someone to help them with errands outside the home, such as picking up groceries or walking the dog. Neighbourhood Support have collated an extensive range of resources to help communities and individuals in their preparations and planning.

In addition to neighbourhood planning, the not-for-profit organisation have also asked everyone to be mindful of whether they have a sufficient emergency kit in their home. “It’s never a bad thing to have on hand and now is a good time to get yours updated,” said Casey, “and in the spirit of supporting your neighbours, perhaps there’s someone on your street who you could offer to

help put one together for?” An Omicron-ready home emergency kit might include things such as repeats of any essential medications, pain relievers, a thermometer, easy meals, perhaps some additional vitamin C & D, and simple things like tissues and cleaning products.

And what should one do if they find themselves in self-isolation at home? Casey encourages, “There’s lots of great health advice out there but it’s also important to stay connected and reach out for help if you need it.”

We all know that social connection is a fundamental human need - perhaps now more than ever – and Neighbourhood Support are encouraging people to make sure they have someone who they can check in with each

The latest Youth Justice Indicators Summary report shows a continuing substantial drop in the rate of youth offending.

“This latest report shows that offending rates among children aged 10 to 13 fell by 65 percent between 2010/11 and 2020/21.

Over the same period, offending rates among young people dropped by 63 percent,” Justice Minister Kris Faafoi says.

“This means that there were 2,900 fewer children and almost 8,500 fewer 14 to 16 year olds offending than there were 10 years ago.”

The Youth Justice Indicators report shows the flow of children and young people through

the youth justice system from 2010/11 to 2020/21. Police, Oranga Tamariki, and the Ministry of Justice each capture data about the performance of the youth justice system which is then analysed to produce the report.

“These reports give youth justice agencies better understanding from when children and young people who offend first enter the justice system, how they are dealt with as they move through it, and if they reoffend.

“These latest results show further reductions in offending by children and young people, which builds on the downward trends shown in the previous report,” Kris says.

I remember about 15-20 years ago writing about pending climate change with temperatures forecast to rise and suggesting how great that will be as we will be able to grow more tropical type plants in New Zealand.

I cannot remember any talk of man made climate change rather it was all to do with cycles that have been occurring for millions of years related to sunspots, volcanic activity, clouds DQG RFHDQ WLGDO À RZV Our planet during recorded histories has seen ice ages, mini ice ages, PDVVLYH À RRGLQJ GURXJKWV RI HSLF proportions and good times weather.

Somehow or other we have as a species survived reasonably well through all that nature has subjected us to.

Now I remember at school in social studies; how we were shown that all of New Zealand have at times spent about as much time under the sea as above it and then wondering if we were to need water wings before I was old enough to leave school.

We are just the higher parts of a massive continent, most of which is under water currently.

Imagine the wealth and land we would have if that continent once again rose above sea level.

Likely the worst man made changes we have caused is deforestation of too many natural canopies that have protected the soil and absorbed excess carbon.

Science tells us that in the past the planet has at times had extremely high levels of carbon dioxide.

Carbon dioxide is a colorless and QRQ À DPPDEOH JDV DW QRUPDO WHPSHU ature and pressure.

Although much less abundant than nitrogen and oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere, carbon dioxide is an important constituent of our planet’s air. A molecule of carbon dioxide (CO2) is made up of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms.

When you inhale (breathe in), air enters your lungs and oxygen from the air moves from your lungs to your blood.

At the same time, carbon dioxide, a waste gas, moves from your blood to the lungs and is exhaled (breathe out).

Exposure to CO2 can produce a YDULHW\ RI KHDOWK H൵ HFWV

On the other hand CO2 is a must for plants which they love and the more they get the bigger they grow.

Besides not only do our plants love CO2 but in taking it in they release oxygen which we love.

Is that not a grand system? (reason why we have indoor plants to provide higher levels of oxygen and absorb our bad breath).

When the planet’s air had high PPM of CO2 then gigantic forests of cycads and ferns grew and where did all the CO2 come from back then?

Volcanoes which erupted frequently on the younger planet.

If it was not for those events we would not have our fossil fuels today.

Nurseries growing crops in glasshouses will often use CO2 generators to increase the amount of CO2 in the glasshouse which in turn increases the growth of the crops.

Politically our farmers whom not only produce the food we eat but are a mainstay of our exports are under pressure to change their farming methods to reduce New Zealand emissions.

I agree that some farming practices QRZDGD\V DUH YHU\ GL൵ HUHQW WR WKH ZD\ things were done say 60-70 years ago.

I always feel really sorry for cattle DQG VKHHS RXW LQ RSHQ ¿ HOGV VX൵ HULQJ from the climate; no shade in hot sun, no shelter from the elements; rain, wind and cold.

Have you seen a sheep stand in front of a fence post to gain a few inches of shade from a hot sun?

In a natural setting animals would be roaming in tree or bush clad areas foraging for vegetation to eat while protected from the elements.

Not practical as you would need a lot of land for a small amount of stock.

I thought of a compromise recently and that is why not have ever green trees planted along part of fence lines of paddocks?

It would lessen the amount of grass grown overall but the health of the stock would improve as they would be able to shelter from the elements.

If the trees grown were weeping willows then not only would you have a large canopy of shelter but willow leaves are a good supplement food when grass is short.

An area where farming has changed from 70 odd years ago when I was a boy on my Uncle’s farm in Bell Block is; from smaller farms to large holdings today.

Back then a farmer like my Uncle had about 100 to 150 acres and ran about a hundred cows.

Farmers as such were considered ZHOO R൵ LI WKH\ KDG D JRRG OLIHVW\OH made good money, expenses were low (not buying tons of fertiliser or big vet bills) which meant a healthy bottom line.

The soil in the paddocks was rich in earthworms and microbes, manure from stock was naturally broken down to feed the grass. The grass was highly nutritious so the stock was healthy.

No pollution of water ways and nitrogen from manure was feeding the grasses.

All that was needed occasionally would be a dressing of lime to keep WKH VRLO OLIH KDSS\ DQG R൵ VHW WKH DFLGLW\ from urine and manure.

Thistles and weeds would be grubbed out, not sprayed with herbicides.

I would turn over a dried cow pad (manure) and gather a can of tiger ZRUPV WR HLWKHU JR ¿ VKLQJ IRU HHOV in the stream that flowed through one part of the farm or to feed to the chickens.

Hay making in summer ensured a barn full of hay bales for winter feed when grass growth was slow due to short daylight hours.

A big vegetable garden, a pig sty with a few pigs fed with slops from the dairy factory (curds and whey).

Metlink thanks passengers Metlink is showing its gratitude to Kiwirail and its passengers for their patience, while work went ahead on the Wellington rail network over Summer.

Daran Ponter, Greater Wellington Council Chair, said Kiwirail should be proud of its efforts to improve the network’s safety, performance, and sustainability.

“I’d like to thank those who worked so diligently on the network during a time when the majority of us were enjoying a break from work,” Ponter said.

“I hope they take satisfaction from knowing that commuters will reap the benefits of their hard work now and in the future.”

A new collaboration between Drug Free Sport New Zealand (DFSNZ) and Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) aims to boost anti-doping support and inclusion for New Zealand’s Para athletes by 2024.

Internationally, Para athletes and Para sport have experienced imbalanced anti-doping support compared to able-bodied athletes and sport, while being expected to hold themselves to the same high standards. Brady the winner before all else Few people can claim to be the best all time in their sport without much of an argument.

Don Bradman, Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky and Michael Jordan come to mind and newly retired NFL quarterback, Tom Brady may be on that list.

The 44-year-old ageless wonder called time on his career after 20 seasons last week.

Brady went to an unprecedented 10 Super Bowls and won seven.

Brady’s story is well known,

drafted as the 199th pick of the 1999 NFL draft.

Throughout his stellar career, he never had the best arm, he wasn’t the fastest runner, he didn’t have the best footwork.

What separates him the most is his unrivalled desire to win.

Brady said in his 2017 book, “The TB12 Method: How to Achieve a Lifetime of Sustained Peak Performance” that he sticks to a 9pm bedtime and he wakes up at 6am.

At one point, it was rumoured

Brady installed a clock in his home gym with a countdown to the next Super Bowl.

Brady also tried to hold-off Father Time with a strict diet when he aged which included avocado ice cream.

While all these things may seem a little odd, you cannot argue with the results.

As a Green Bay Packers fan and someone who has followed the NFL for the past decade, I couldn’t warm to Brady.

It was nothing personal, his class is undeniable, his play never grabbed me, never made me as a rather clueless fan, sit up and take notice.

The only thing that makes your eyes widen is the amount of winning he has done over the past 22 years.

Brady is someone who got every single drop of potential out of himself.

He had to scrap early in his career for recognition but once the starting

quarterback job was his in New England, there was no stopping him.

Winning matters a lot when it comes to legacy.

Getting to the top of the mountain puts any athlete into a new stratosphere but to break new ground like Brady has is simply incredible.

It’s highly unlikely anyone in the coming decades will win seven Super Bowls.

That needs to be recognised and appreciated as a sports fan.

Nga Hau E Wha O Wainuiomata victory

Two teams from the Nga Hau E Wha O Wainuiomata club, the under 16 girls and the under 18 girls were the victors in the battle for the Jean Kellett Cup and the TuiaPereira Cup tournament over the weekend.

The under 18s coached by Renee Davies and Jermaine Pasene showed what all the training could do and won the Ana Tuia Pereira Cup. They battled hard on a wet paddock to claim the cup against tough opposition.

The under 16s girls coached by Sisi Tuala Leafa and Luke Laban did the club proud becoming the Jean Kellet 16 girls champs.

Jean Kellet was a Wainuiomata resident who played for Wainuiomata and made the Kiwi Ferns and now lives in Australia.

Nga Hau E Wha O Wainuiomata club CEO Star Olsen says there was a lot of discussion over the names to go on the trophy.

“It was just a no brainer to have Jean’s name on the cup and the under 18s cup was named after a Kiwi Fern also who played out of the Renwick Club Tuia-Pereira and was a Kiwi Fern as well,” Star says.

“What we are short on is history and having these trophies gives us the opportunity to tell our people who they were and what they have done.”

It will become an annual tournament and it also gives girls the chance to play the game and experience it he says and they had a few first timers on the day which is really encouraging.

Covid stifles motorcycling

When the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic stifles a sporting occasion, its impact is felt well beyond the tight-knit sports community.

This is particularly so in regards to such a popular annual event as the Honda-sponsored Whakatane Summercross and the affect this month’s late cancellation has had on the Bay of Plenty Motorcycle Club (BOPMCC) and, indeed, on the entire Kiwi motorcycling community.

Originally scheduled to run, as usual, on the last weekend of December, pandemic concerns forced this historic 50th running of the Whakatane Summercross to be rescheduled for the following month, January 2022.

The host Bay of Plenty Motorcycle Club promised it would be worth the wait and their vast volunteer crews continued to push on with preparations.

But then the New Zealand government imposed Red Traffic Light conditions on the country just a

week ago, in a desperate bid to slow the advance of the virus, and the iconic bike event that had since been rescheduled for January 29 and 30 could now not go ahead at all.

Well in excess of 500 competitors, plus thousands of spectators and support personnel – including administrators, medics, lap-scoring/ time-keepers, track commentators, the media, food stall operators, maintenance workers such as tractor and digger drivers, and food stall and coffee cart operators – therefore had their plans for the long Auckland Anniversary Weekend tossed out the window.

Motel and camping ground bookings were hurriedly cancelled and time off work and family holiday trips were abandoned.

Immediately we can see that for events such as this, made possible entirely by volunteer labour, donations, club fees and a handful of noble sponsors, so it’s a massively disappointing waste of energy and resources, with no financial compensation on offer, when things

turn sour.

Long-time motorcycling event commentator Neil Ritchie expressed his sadness that the Whakatane Summercross could not run this time around.

“The Whakatane Summercross is one of the longest-running major motocross events on the New Zealand calendar, ranking alongside the New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville (which was also cancelled this year),” he says.

The character of the New Zealand motocross community is exemplified by the Bay of Plenty Motorcycle Club and I’m sure we will all bounce back to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this event in the near future.”

As usual, the Whakatane Summercross was to be run at the club’s popular Awakaponga circuit, near Matata, and again expected to attract a “Who’s Who” of Kiwi motocross talent.

The event was again this year acting as a springboard for riders heading into the busy part of the season, culminating with the four-
