Team effort Extra-large smiles from local volunteers were served along with the delicious weekly hot lunches at the Linden Community Centre last Friday.

The volunteers from the local “Kai Kitchen” group had just been announced as Joint winners of the Tawa Community Civic Awards in the Health and Well Being Category.

Every Friday the volunteers receive a delivery of healthy, fresh ingredients including fruit and vegetables, breads and meat as well as sweet treats donated through Kaibosh, PAK’n SAVE, KCA and EKTANZ. The team transforms the ingredients into delicious and nutritious free hot lunches served in the Centre’s dining room to locals who might not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy a hot meal in the company of others.

Man dies after being shot by police in Newlands More details have emerged after a man died after being shot by police during a family harm incident in Newlands on Tuesday.

Acting Wellington District Commander, Tracey Thompson said during a press conference on Wednesday morning.

“Just before 3pm (Tuesday), police were called to a family harm incident in Kingsbridge Place, Newlands.

“On arrival, police staff were confronted with a situation where a man was threatening victims inside of a house.

“This included a woman and young child.

“While the young child was

able to leave the house, the man attempted to barricade himself inside the address with the woman.

“Voice appeals were made to the man without success.

“Our staff outside the property were able to see the man had a knife to the woman’s throat.

“Police fired multiple shots at the man, critically wounding him and despite our staff providing immediate first aid, he sadly died at the scene.

“The woman suffered non life threatening injuries and was treated by ambulance staff.”

Thompson confirmed police would not be releasing the name

or other details of the man to ensure his whanau are notified first.

“I want to extend my condolences to his loved ones,” she said.

“This is not an outcome anyone involved wanted.

She also said this incident and the unexplained death in Khandallah did not appear to be linked.

Thompson said police new the local community “would be shaken by the events” but assured people that it was an isolated incident.

“We are still in the early stages of the investigation and we will continue to have a presence in the area in the coming days.

Thompson says police were aware the man had gang connections but would not elaborate further.

Former Marsden student named Acting Director General of Health The Deputy Public Service Commissioner has announced the appointment of Samuel Marsden Collegiate old girl Dr Diana Sarfati as Acting Director-General of Health and Chief Executive, Ministry of Health.

Dr Sarfati will act in the role until a permanent appointee takes up the Director-General position.

The Director-General of Health is a pivotal role leading a sector critical to the overall wellbeing of New Zealanders.

The Ministry of Health is the Government’s chief advisor on health matters. The Director-General of Health will lead the Ministry and, alongside the chief executives of Health New Zealand and the 0ƗRUL Health

Authority, the wider sector through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the forthcoming significant change to New Zealand’s health system. As the chief steward for the health system, the Ministry will continue to set the strategic direction for health and will be responsible for developing national policy, regulation and monitoring.

Dr Sarfati is currently Chief Executive of Te Aho o Te Kahu, Cancer Control Agency. Prior to this Dr Sarfati was National Director of Cancer Control at the Ministry of Health to oversee the implementation of the agency.

Several people with North Wellington links were acknowledged in the Queen’s Birthday Honours over the weekend.

Karori’s Dr Bryan Betty was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to health.

He is a specialist general practitioner at Porirua Union, a high need, low-cost clinic in Cannons Creek, Porirua, providing for a predominantly Maori, Pacific and refugee community.

Dr Betty has advocated nationally on health equity issues surrounding Type 2 diabetes and rheumatic fever. He was a member of the Ministry of Health’s National Diabetes Advisory Group, a member of the Capital Coast Diabetes Network, and the New Zealand Diabetes Guidelines Group in 2010/2011. He lobbied PHARMAC in 2020 to fund two medications to improve options for Type 2 diabetics. He was a member of the rheumatic fever guidelines group for the New Zealand Heart Foundation.

Fellow Karori resident, Judge Andrew Becroft was named a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order for services to the judiciary, children and youth.

He was Children’s Commissioner from 2016 to 2021, during which time he has strongly advocated for progress on child poverty, a safer, more effective care and protection system, and for children’s voices and rights to be included in policy and decision making.

Karori’s Michael Scrivener earned a Queen’s Service Medal for services to ethnic communities and refugees.

He has been a member of the Hutt Multicultural Council (HMC) since 1999, holding roles on the Executive Committee, as Secretary and Vice President and current Life Member.

Michael has been on the organis-

ing committee of the HMC’s annual Race Unity Celebration event for 20 years, responsible for promotion and logistics support. He has helped organise the Multicultural Football Tournament since 2017 and HMC’s Waitangi Day commemoration event. He helped establish and was a member of the Upper Hutt Multicultural Council from 2006 to 2014 and a member of the Wellington Multicultural Council from 2000 to 2020. He was Secretary of the Seniors’ Council of the New Zealand Federation of Multicultural Councils from 2013 to 2017. He helped prepare a directory of service providers, religious and cultural organisations in the Wellington region for international students. He has been involved with his local Anglican Churches in Trentham from 1979 to 2000 and Karori since 2001, holding vestry and works committee positions. He is a community van driver, taking disabled people to church services and events. He distributes donated household items to refugees settling in the Wellington region.

He is a member of the Karori Resilience Group. Mr Scrivener is Wellington representative for Shoes for Planet Earth, a charity which collects and distributes second-hand shoes.

Johnsonville’s Lynda Hagen was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to law and the community.

She has contributed to the legal research community as Executive Director of the New Zealand Law Foundation since 1998.

Ms Hagen upon appointment expanded the New Zealand Law Foundation’s (NZLF) approach by encouraging innovative projects which created and built legal research capability in New Zealand, giving international prominence to pioneering features and unique strengths. NZLF has encouraged

Kim established and led the Ministry of Education’s Education Infrastructure Service (EIS), which has managed all large, complex construction projects on behalf of schools and is responsible for maintaining and modernising around 2,300 state schools.

Her EIS team has grown from 40 people to more than 500. From 2010 she steered a transformation

of school property from a $300 million portfolio to a $1.35 billion infrastructure portfolio that also encompasses payroll, internet access and school transport. She has been committed to improving schools’ infrastructure and has worked with the building sector and individual schools to ensure each new building or re-fit is designed and delivered collaboratively to meet local needs. She has overseen a major survey of all New Zealand schools and their condition, and has led through challenges including leaky buildings, asbestos and legal proceedings.

She has overseen development of ‘Te Rautaki Rawa Kura – The School Property Strategy 2030’, stabilising the problematic Novopay payroll project, a major school transport contract renewal, wi-fi in classrooms and the Christchurch Schools Rebuild programme.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, EIS worked with schools and internet service providers to connect around 53,000 homes to the internet.

Wadestown’s Emeritus Professor Tony Parker was named an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to industrial design.

He was New Zealand’s leading University-based industrial designer until his retirement in 2020.

Tony was appointed as Professor of Industrial Design at Massey University in 2005. He then became Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of Research at the College of Creative Arts. He began his career at the Ministry of Works and Development, notably designing the executive desk chair used by former Prime Minister David Lange. Between 1992 and 2021, he was awarded 16 Best Design Awards from the Designers Institute of New Zealand and was Convenor of the Product Design category from 2007 to 2021. Much of his career was spent designing security, animal management and fuel system products for Gallagher Industries.

Wadestown’s Judge Carolyn Henwood was named Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the State, youth and the arts.

She established the Henwood Trust in 2004 with the support of the Tindall Foundation and chairs the Trust, which is focused on delivering effective strategies for young offenders.

The Henwood Trust has published ‘NZ Gift to the World’, the ‘Family Group Conference’ and ‘A Covenant for our Nation’s Children’.

In 2006 Judge Henwood was appointed as special advisor for the implementation of the Te Hurihanga Youth Justice Programme, aimed at preventing youth re-offending. She has been involved with youth justice issues internationally and has convened and presented at international conferences.

Newlands’ Souella Cumming was named an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to governance.

She has provided governance, risk management and internal audit advisory services to a range of public and private sector clients for more than 30 years through KPMG. Souella is a Partner at KPMG and Head of KPMG New Zealand’s Consulting and Government Services practices. She works extensively with private and public sector Boards and Audit and Risk Committees to enhance governance practices. Mana Whenua and Council to discuss fireworks at Matariki A fireworks display for Matariki ki PǀQeke will go ahead this year, with Mana Whenua and Wellington City Council meeting to discuss the format of future celebrations to mark the MƗori New Year.

In 2017, both groups collectively agreed to move the Guy Fawkes fireworks display in November to Matariki in June.

Matariki was deemed more

appropriate for a significant celebration and fireworks display.

November the 5th is also the anniversary of Te PƗhuatanga o Parihaka – a very important day for the people of Te Ɩtiawa Taranaki WhƗnui.

Volunteers helping each other in Johnsonville Johnsonville Rotary has donated three office chairs for the Johnsonville Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) volunteers to use as they answer calls for help from the public.

“The office really needed new chairs as the ones we had were too old, seat and back not staying in position, which was causing some back pain for the wonderful volunteers who support our clients,” says Dulce Piacentini, Manager of Johnsonville CAB. CAB Johnsonville is extremely thankful to Rotary Club of John-

sonville and are celebrating that two organisations came together to make sure the community keeps on receiving a much needed service.

CABs aim to ensure that people do not suffer through ignorance of their rights and responsibilities or of the services available or through an inability to express their needs.

Volunteers receive training and attend the CAB office in the Johnsonville Community centre every weekday and Saturday mornings.

They answer questions in person, by phone or via email.

Dulce called upon the help of Johnsonville Rotary Club who are proud to run events and activities to support the local community in Johnsonville, Churton Park and Newlands. Johnsonville Rotary were happy to help the CAB by funding chairs that are comfortable for the volunteers to use.

Human impacts on Wellington Harbour clearer A comprehensive report from Greater Wellington, in partnership with Wellington Water, on the ecological health of the region’s largest harbour, Te Whanganui-aTara (Wellington Harbour) has just been published.

Every four years, data is analysed from over twenty strategically placed monitoring sites, including several control sites in the depths of the harbour. The findings look to understand the impact that human activity and subsequent sediment contamination have had over time.

Two key findings are the high amounts of muddy sediments at all sites barring Evan’s Bay and high concentrations of copper, lead, and legacy concentrations of mercury at some sites.

“This hasn’t happened overnight, rather over decades or longer” said Megan Melidonis, GW Senior Environmental Scientist, referring to the metal concentrations.

“Left untouched this industrial legacy often has limited effect on the marine environment, but when disturbances shift sediment, toxic effects can be felt both within localised bottom dwelling animal communities and within the wider aquatic environment.

Such a disruption of the natural food chain may deter visiting marine life such as dolphins, orcas and seabirds but may also affect

important aquatic habitats including recently discovered beds of red seaweed, an important habitat in Wellington Harbour that provides refuge for an abundance of sea life including the elusive decorator crab”.

“Potential degradation of the harbour is not confined to industrial sites as monitoring areas further afield are vulnerable to sediment, nutrients and contaminants from rivers and paved areas.

“Being a deep basin harbour, Te Whanganui-a-Tara encourages the retention of fine sediment, while the activity of waves and wind fetch over its great expanse can shift sediment and associated contaminants from point source stormwater discharges, industrial sites, and areas focused around port activities.

Wellington Water are required to monitor sites within Wellington Harbour as a condition of the consent granted to them to allow discharges to the marine environment.

“With numerous outfalls located around the Harbour, we not only need to be aware of what’s entering our harbours through stormwater but also ensuring we’re not inadvertently contributing to the deterioration of our marine and coastal environments” said Melidonis, referring also to over 700 litter items

Police appeal for info on Khandallah death Police investigating the death of a man found in a reserve in Khandallah are appealing for information from the public.

The man, in his 40s, was found by a member of the public in Odell Reserve around 4pm yesterday.

A scene examination is ongoing in the reserve today, and Police staff are completing area inquiries around the reserve.

“We believe the deceased was walking his dog, a golden labradoodle, from his home in the Amapur Drive area to Odell Reserve,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch.

Police are interested in any sightings of the man as he made his way to the reserve with his dog between 2:15pm and 3:40pm.

He is 170cm tall, of medium build, and was wearing a black jacket with a fluoro orange top underneath, a dark-coloured cap, shorts, and work boots.

We are also asking anyone that was walking in Odell Reserve and the Punjab Street area yesterday afternoon, between 2-4pm, to contact Police.

Floral Art members learning new skills Johnsonville Floral Art Club members have been learning how to incorporate flax components into their floral art designs.

Caroline Smith an experienced teacher of flax weaving first taught us about the observance of customs and rituals of using flax and to respect the plants themselves as a gift from Tane. Caroline then taught us plaiting, shredding and creating flax flowers over several sessions. We then were challenged to use these new techniques in designs which could include flowers and

other foliage.

The club is keen to attract new members.

It has been operating in Johnsonville for 66 years .It meets 10 times a year at the Uniting Church 18 Doctor Taylor Terrace on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Previous experience is not necessary. Experienced members are available to offer advice and help the newer members.

Hospitality opportunity comes to the capital Ministry of Social Development and Restaurant Association expand Hospo Start programme to Wellington to get job seekers restaurant ready The Restaurant Association training programme Hospo Start, which prepares job seekers for a career in hospitality is set to launch its first programme in Wellington as the partnership with the Ministry of Social Development grows.

MSD provides the funding and support for the programme, which plays a vital role in seeing job seekers equipped with entry level skills and mentoring support to gain and maintain employment in hospitality.

Hospo Start is run regularly in Auckland and will now run in Wellington from 7th – 24th June.

It offers a three-week intensive training course and eight weeks job seeking support. The training is employer-driven and updated regularly based on consultation from members and the industry in relation to entry level requirements.

The hospitality industry continues to rate a lack of skilled employees as one of the key challenges facing hospitality business operators.

According to The Restaurant Association annual hospitality report, the number of hospitality businesses in New Zealand increased to almost 19,000 in 2020. While the industry currently employs 134,000 people, the key challenge is a lack of skilled employees.

Restaurant Association member feedback from 2022 indicates that 79 per cent of hospitality businesses trying to recruit junior

workers were finding it difficult to do so.

These recruitment challenges remain and in April 2021 this was highlighted as the biggest pain point for operators.

The latest Stats NZ figures show there are more than 98,000 people unemployed in New Zealand. Hospo Start hopes to reduce these rates and make it easier for restaurants to find skilled workers.

“Involvement in the programme makes it easier for Hospo Start trainees to enter our industry. In addition, knowing they have mentoring support from a team through their first few months of job seeking is a vital component to their success.” Says Marisa Bidois, CEO of the Restaurant Association.

“We are working with a number of establishments that have employed young Hospo Start candidates with great outcomes on both sides. Not only is it important to find new recruits for the industry and ensure they are work ready, but we also know it’s important to give people the opportunity to have a meaningful career in our industry.”

Ministry of Social Development’s Director Industry Partnerships Amanda Nicolle says Hospo Start supports job seekers get the skills they need to fill the range of vacancies in the sector.

“We’re committed to working with the sector to build the capacity and capability needed amongst New Zealanders looking for work.

Neko Ngeru Cat Café is Crowdfunding with Pledgeme Wellington’s cat café is coming back bigger and better than ever! Neko Ngeru has purchased a two-story building in Central Lower Hutt to be home to the rescued cats and their caretakers. The ground floor is already leased out to Café Soleil and the first floor is going to be the cat café and caretaker residence.

The crowdfunding will help with the costs of adapting the current upstairs office into an amazing space to relax with cats. There will be lots of cat climbing furniture and hiding places on the walls and ceiling, an exercise wheel, a “catio” (covered and screened-in deck), magnetic locking system on the doors, and comfortable places for the humans to lounge and play with cats.

As with many construction projects, there have been delays. So, there is no fixed opening date for the cat café yet.

But they are hopeful it will be within 2022 and the crowdfunding will certainly help with that. But when they put their home on the market back in November, suddenly the market flooded with lots of homes for sale and there were few buyers who could get banks to finance them. Months of empty open homes, with assurances that the other sellers were having the same problem, have gone by. Meanwhile the settlement date was looming. Ken went to Japan to personally transfer money saved there. Due to tighter rules, some of it could not leave Japan and what could, was lessened by an unfavorable exchange rate. They lost about 10% of their saving by transferring at that time but it could not be helped. The settlement payment due on March 31st could only be partially met and default interest kicked in. They are working on getting

a high-interest loan but at least it will be better than the 12% they are obligated to pay right now. For the moment, the vendors are being kind, but it is too much to ask them to wait forever.

It seems like some long-awaited construction will be happening “soonish”.

The consent to upgrade the ground floor with firewalls and another toilet has finally been granted after four months.

The seismic report that was started in November did come through in April.

Many building companies were contacted but all were too busy. Finally, a building company owner looking for inside work for the winter was tipped off to the project by his daughter who follows Neko Ngeru’s Facebook page. (Pester power may yet prevail in getting things done as soon as may be) Much will depend on getting gib board and other materials sorted. That’s only for the ground floor, though. The consent for the upstairs cat cafe is in the process. Some consents have been taking nine months. Hopefully that won’t happen to Neko Ngeru Cat Café.

Although the upstairs cat cafe won’t be ready for a while, the downstairs tenant, Café Soleil, has been established as a great place for delicious food and coffee.

Coming originally from Spain, owner chef Christine puts a Mediterranean flair into her culinary creations. The tortilla Española is a classic. When the upstairs cat café is done, food and drink can be brought upstairs to enjoy with the cats.

Will Anthony set for Oceania Champs A 93-strong New Zealand team combining a healthy mix of youth and experience including Olympic Harriers runner Will Anthony, is set to compete at the 2022 Oceania Championships in Mackay, Queensland this week.

The squad features a combination of elite able-bodied and Para athletes, developing athletes and U20 and U18 age-group performers all hoping to broaden their experiences on the international stage.

A total of 12 athletes named in the initial wave of selected athletes for the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon will feature led

by World Indoor high jump bronze medallist Hamish Kerr, New Zealand women’s 100m record-holder Zoe Hobbs, Sam Tanner, fresh off his PB and 1500m victory in the Prefontaine Classic, and Oceania hammer record-holder Lauren Bruce.

The eight remaining New Zealand athletes have been conditionally selected for the World Championship team and with world rankings points on the line in Mackay the meet will be key for the following eight athletes; Eddie Osei-Nketia (men’s 100m), Brad Mathas (men’s 800m), Georgia Hulls (women’s 200m), Oliva McTaggart and Imogen Ayris (women’s pole vault), Keeley O’Hagan (women’s high jump) Nicole Bradley (women’s hammer) and Tori Peeters (women’s javelin).

A total of ten athletes selected

for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will also be in action at the Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Complex. These include nine of the above plus discus thrower Connor Bell. High jumper Keeley O’Hagan is the only conditionally selected athlete for the Commonwealth Games competing in Queensland.

Following the postponement of the 2022 World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe because of the global pandemic, the Oceania Area Championships represent the primary international competitive opportunity for our premier para-athletes. New Zealand boast a strong line up of 11 Para athletes in Mackay led by Tokyo Paralympic gold medallists Lisa Adams (shot put F37) and Holly Robinson (javelin F46). Double Paralympic sprint medallist Danielle Aitchison will feature in the 100m and 200m T36 events while Tokyo Paralympic shot put F37 duo Ben Tuimaseve and Caitlin Dore also compete.

Also bolstering the New Zealand team in Queensland will be a large contingent of U18 and U20 athletes including four athletes bound for the World U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia in August; James Harding (800m and 1500m), Will Anthony (3000m and 5000m), Talia van Rooyen (100m, 100m hurdles and 4x400m relay) and Natalia Rankin-Chi Tar (shot and discus).

cord-holder and Tokyo Olympian Hamish Kerr is one of the most high-profile athletes in action in Mackay, where he hopes to recreate the success he enjoyed at the 2019 edition of the Oceania Area Championships in Townsville, when he equalled the then national record of 2.30m to strike gold.

“Townsville was definitely a pivotal performance,” he recalls.

“We enjoyed great conditions and to jump a big new PB, get the auto standard for World Champs and gain big world rankings points has stood me in good stead for the past two years.

“To come back to the Oceania champs is important for me. I never take representing New Zealand for granted, so if I’ve got an opportunity to put on a Black Singlet, I’m going to take it.”

After testing positive for Covid on his return from Belgrade when he won a World Indoor bronze medal in March, he has perhaps suffered some lingering effects and has not quite been able to deliver his best at the Doha and Birmingham Diamond League events last month.

But each day he is getting stronger and hopes for a good performance in Mackay.

“I haven’t quite hit my performance goals yet during the outdoor season but if I get up to around 2.30m again that would be really good leading into World Championships,” he says.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Magic: By Wally Richards How would you like to bring a little magic to your gardens, all plants as well as your house plants?

There is a very simple way which many gardeners have found to their delight; MBL Magic Botanical Liquid. You could call it Magic Prehistoric Compost Tea as it is derived from sediment that was formed millions of years ago when the planet was new and bursting with life. Things grew ginormous back then, plants were several times larger than their counter parts of our times and the animals or dinosaurs were in most part monsters as well.

What made them so?

It was the rich minerals of the time along with the highest levels of CO2 the world has ever known. CO2 varied between 2000 to 4000 ppm 65 million years ago. We currently are only 387 to 420 ppm which means plants do not grow as big as quickly as they did 65 million years ago. That is except in commercial glasshouses were we use CO2 generators to pump the gas into the house and speed up growth and size of crops. It is an interesting cycle as plants absorb CO2 and release oxygen, we need oxygen to breathe and we expel CO2!

So if we use logic to the common denominator and we reduce CO2 we have smaller plants (combine this with massive deforestation) Less 2;<*(1 IRU XV ,I \RX ZDQW WR ¿ QG out how that feels without having to climb mount Everest where at high

altitudes there is much less oxygen then take a paper bag and breath in and out into the bag for several minutes. Your brain will become deprived of required amounts of oxygen, you will feel sleepy, lose concentration and your body functions will start closing down. Organ damage will start to occur as your blood is now not carrying oxygen to the cells only CO2. Not good.

Oceanic plankton which provide about half the worlds oxygen but most of that is used by the marine life. A problem also lies in the oceans called algae bloom which when it dies it uses more of the ocean produced oxygen than can be replenished at that time. This can create extremely low oxygen concentrations, or hypoxia which are dead zones as no marine life can live there. We see algae blooms occurring in NZ as a result of nitrogen and phosphorus run off combine with temperature, sun light and low À RZ RI ZDWHU PDNHV SHUIHFW DOJDH bloom conditions.

So the old saying; breathe out and make a plant happy (and grow) is very true. Everything in nature has natural balance we need oxygen and plants need CO2, the more CO2 the bigger the plants, the bigger the plants the more oxygen we have to breathe.

So if you go for a walk in the park where there are lots of trees and plants or better still go for a walk in

the bush and you will feel good as a result of higher concentrations of oxygen for you to breath in.

Back to our magic... My partner has a lot of house plants which she started collecting in the last year or so and recently her friends commented on how really big they had grown and healthy they are.

They want to know her secret which turns out to be MBL that she adds a little to the water every now and then when watering them. That is why I have been prompted to write again about MBL. Other interesting comments from gardeners have been: Regular spraying of roses with MBL has reduced considerably leaf diseases and now some roses have perfume never detected previously. Seedlings produced to sell only take about half the time as they did without MBL. Seeds germinate far quicker in one case pumpkin plants from seed in one day. Vegetable crops twice the size in just about half the time.

Combine MBL with Mycorrcin or/and molasses and increase the H൵ HFWLYHQHVV RI ERWK JURZWK DQG OHVV diseases. Why? It is MAGIC. Woeful Warriors are unwatchable It appears the Warriors are looking for rock bottom but cannot find it.

Losing to the Sharks when they had a two-man advantage wasn’t it because then they lost to the hopeless Newcastle Knights.

Many thought the handling of the Matt Lodge exit, where the forward got a $750,000 handshake which will count towards next year’s salary cap, was the lowest ebb but being pummelled 44-12 against an under strength Manly team missing their main star Tom Trbojevic and

several State of Origin representatives on Saturday night was equally as pathetic as anything I previously mentioned.

I think many of the players have given up, perhaps having one eye on returning to Auckland in three weeks.

The Warriors barely fired a shot as Manly opened up a 26-0 lead at halftime.

There is one area in particular that I got it wrong pre-season.

I was all in favour of bringing Shaun Johnson home to add experi-

ence in the halves and an improved kicking game.

Well, he’s a shell of himself and a liability at the moment.

Clearly down on confidence, Johnson, perhaps fearful of injuries no longer attacks the defensive line when he has the ball which was his X factor when he was younger.

Now, defensive lines don’t respect his running game and simply slide on to the attackers outside him, correctly predicting he will pass it on.

Add to this his mediocre at best defence and kicking game which

has been below par for much of the season and the Warriors have been left looking rudderless in attack more often than not.

There is a part of me who has pity for coach Nathan Brown, I don’t think Craig Bellamy or Wayne Bennett could do much better with this crop of players.

Yes, I’m sure many are fatigued from three seasons exclusively playing in Australia and for all their flaws, the club deserves a lot of credit for doing that because it has kept the competition afloat.

However, this team has zero of the trademark Warriors flair which was both exhilarating and maddening from week-to-week.

This is just a bad team which looks utterly lost and out of motivation to do better.

My partner, a massive Warriors fan, who ensures we watch every game, said on Saturday to turn it off at halftime.

Her faith is shaken, mine has thankfully long gone and I’m sure we aren’t the only ones questioning where the club goes from here.

Johnsonville Hawks clipped by OBU

A sluggish 15 minutes in the second half cost Johnsonville any chance of beating Old Boys University in their Swindale Shield rugby encounter on Saturday.

Johnsonville only trailed 22-14 at halftime before a sluggish effort after the restart saw the score blowout to 41-14.

In a positive, the Hawks were able to rally to earn a four try bonus point to keep their top eight chances alive.

OBU won the big moments of the game, while Johnsonville failed to make all their chances pay. A case in point was OBU’s final try that clinched the match, second five Callum Harkin spoiling Johnson-

ville ball at the back of the scrum and running 40 metres unopposed to score in front of the cricket nets to bring up his 100th point of the season. Harkin converted his own try and OBU had the game in the bag at 41-14.

Johnsonville coach Jason Adamson says his team struggled to put their stamp on the game.

“I thought we prepared really well but we just couldn’t find our rhythm.

“OBU made the most of our mistakes and while we created some chances, we were our own worst enemy at times.”

Injuries to captain Ha’amea Ahio, flanker Sam Green, winger Jed Mitchell and the unavailability of first-five Levi Grace will be con-

cerns in the coming weeks.

The team is set to welcome back Niall Delahunt from a hand injury and the Irishman could slot back into the No 10 jersey with Grace absent which would also allow Mark Sutton a chance to stay at his preferred halfback position.

Johnsonville will have to play their rescheduled match against Hutt Old Boys’ Marist at some point after a covid enforced postponement in round seven.

It means the team will likely play three games in seven days.

Johnsonville will play Paremata Plimmerton at Ngatitoa Domain in a must-win clash on Saturday with both teams on 23 points, five points outside the top eight.

North Wellington advance in Chatham Cup

The Chatham Cup is the New Zealand men’s football equivalent of the FA Cup and it first kicked off in 1923. The knockout competition is open to any club, with the teams higher up in the echelons not needing to participate in the preliminary and first rounds. However, with round two playing out across the country between Friday and Monday of Queen’s Birthday Weekend, the David and Goliath match ups could no longer be avoided.

In terms of the Wellington region matches, it wasn’t the green, green grass of home but it was good enough as TFS North Wellington headed over the hill to face Wainuiomata at Richard Prouse Park on Saturday. Richard Prouse is always a tough place to go and play football and conditions after a damp week were challenging for both sides, a perfect leveller for cup football.

It was still anyone’s game at half time though and the vocal locals were more than happy watching their men walk into the sheds at just 1-0 down.
