In the last month her grandson Wolf Walbaekken started as a new entrant and something to be celebrated with four members of the same family at the same school.

When Allison’s mum Florence was a student in 1945 the school was just one room with standards

Florence’s father was on the Wainuiomata County Town Committee, Ray Ashforth, and he had built in Wainuiomata because he wanted space to grow gladiolus and Ashforth Street Wainuiomata is named after him.

Florence who is now 88 lived in Wainuiomata from 1945 to 1992 and Allison attended the school and she also spent two years in the old single classroom block which is now a museum.

Her daughter Danielle Walbaekken came to the school and it was during this time Allison took up teaching at her old school as

“It is amazing to have four generations and amazing that mum is still here and there are a lot of people who have had generations here but for us it is special,” Allison says.

“I always wanted to be a teacher and I came back when the kids started and they needed a reliever and that grew to long term reliever and then deputy principal and then principal and I never thought that would happen.”

Danielle was taught by her mum while she was at the school and was even given a detention by her mum, much to the surprise of other students.

Danielle hadn’t completed her

homework and so a detention was given and a letter sent home giving the reason why.

“The letter said dear Mr and Mrs Burdon your daughter has not done her home work and therefore has to have a detention regards Mrs Burdon,” Danielle says.

They all have great memories of the school including learning to swim 50 metres in the river for Florence and Danielle swimming in the river after school on hot days.

With Wolf now a new entrant Danielle has decided to take up early childhood teaching, in a way following in her mum’s footsteps.

inbrief news Move your butt It’s bowel Cancer Awareness Month – and it’s also the annual Move your Butt fundraiser. This campaign encourages all New Zealanders to get off their butts and challenge themselves to move more.

The campaign runs from the 1st until the 30th of June, and Bowel Cancer New Zealand asks all Kiwis – young or old, fit or unfit – to Move their Butts more during June. The challenge does not need to be extreme, like running a marathon; it simply means challenging yourself to exercise more than you usually do.

Move your Butt month is supported by a range of ambassadors, including TVNZ Breakfast presenter Jenny-May Clarkson whose brother died from bowel cancer at age 54.

In memory of her late brother, Jenny-May will do 54 ‘wall balls’ a day this June – a strenuous exercise that she says will be “tough, but manageable” during her busy schedule.

Showing great talent and discipline across three codes has seen Wainuiomata’s Tane Mumu awarded the Gee & Hickton Funeral Directors Young Sportsman of the Year 2021.

Tane was awarded a rugby scholarship to Scotts College while he was a student in year nine and hasn’t looked back since then.

He has shown great promise

in Softball, Baseball and Rugby and was recently selected into the New Zealand Black Sox Softball Squad.

He was part of the Scotts College 1st XV to win the College Sport Wellington Premier Final, and was also selected in the New Zealand U18 Baseball Team.

“It was pretty much out of the blue and I saw the finalists and I was surprised as,” Tane says.

“I love all three of the sports I play but at the moment I am

going further in softball so I will see where it goes.”

And it is in softball that Tane has made his mark with numerous senior appearances with the Hutt Valley Men’s National Fastpitch Team, the Hutt Valley Fastball 45 Team, the Dodgers Premier Men’s Team where he was named MVP at the prestigious Vic Guth Tournament in Auckland.

Tane was also in the Central Region U19 team which won the

Easter Classic in Auckland where he was named the top batter.

Now in year thirteen at Scotts College Tane says when he finishes up at the end of the year he will probably be on the lookout for an apprenticeship of some sort and continue with sport to see where it goes.

“There is the world series for the Black Sox next year so I will have to try and make that squad and that will be in Auckland,” Tane says.

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation says its 30,000 members who work in DHBs have voted overwhelmingly to reject a second offer in their current round of multi-employer collective negotiations. This means the eight-hour strike planned for Wednesday 9 June will go ahead affecting all public hospitals and DHB facilities.

NZNO Lead Advocate David Wait says he was pleased at the exceptionally high voter turnout and at the member unity the result reveals.

“Members are facing serious nursing workforce issues, with pay rates that do not attract people into the profession or retain the people we have, and staffing levels which stretch them to breaking point, putting them and their patients at risk,” he says.

Little Theatre Les Misérables

A treat is in store for Wainuiomata residents this month with the Wainuiomata Little Theatre’s performance of Les Misérables.

Set in Paris in 1832 putting on the show has seen sets and costumes built from scratch and countless hours of work put in by cast and crew for this years show.

Theatre president Trevor Williams says the last show they did was Mama Mia which was set on a Greek Island so this one requires a totally different look.

“It is all grey and dingy and dark so it is quite different,” he says.

Putting the set and costumes together has required them to hunt through Op Shops and building the sets sees materials gathered from peoples garages.

“Even the tip or wherever and sometimes it is a matter of being

at the right place at the right time,”Trevor says.

Once the curtain opens show will be put on from the 23rd of June to the 10th of July Wednesday to Saturday nights and a matinee on two Sundays.

“It is quite a long show it is about three hours all up with a 20 minute break in the middle and it is great to be doing the show as it is one of the shows a few people have been wanting to do and we applied to the people in Australia for the rights to do it last year and had to hold off performing because of Covid,” he says.

Trevor says Le Misérables is reasonably complicated and it has attracted some great local talent and the opportunity to see it shouldn’t be missed.

To says thanks and give a little back to the community Wainui Dental have put on a free barbeque on the strand over the long weekend.

Team leader Nicole Reeve says the support they have received from the Wainuiomata community over the past year has been so amazing they wanted to show some appreciation.

“We love the Wainuiomata community so much that we decided to do a free barbecue for all the locals to come down and have some free food and we had some great giveaways also,” Nicole says.

The team had been brain-storming ideas on how to give back to the community and thought a free barbeque was a good starting point.

Wainuiomata artist Gary Gerrard’s self portrait is one of the top 50 entrants selected for display in the Te Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award exhibition.

Created this year the competition encouraged emerging Maori artists to create portraits of their te puna (ancestors) in any medium.

The awards aim was to encourage and support the next generation of Maori artists to pursue their aspirations in the realm of mahi toi (art).

Gary is over the moon to have his work recognised in the exhibition.

Gary is a tutor at the Mix in Lower Hutt and decided to give an online demonstration doing a self portrait during the lock-down.

“It is for my son and my moko and will be passed on to them,

they did ask if it was going to be for sale and having myself in the book made it special too and to be in the top 50 of 128 is amazing,” Gary says.

He has been overwhelmed and humbled by the experience of such appreciation being showed for his work.

There is still a chance he might be the peoples favourite with votes placed by visitors to the exhibition at The New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pukenga Whakaata .

The competition attracted works by 128 Maori artists on this year’s theme and was a collaboration between the Kiingitanga and the New Zealand Portrait Gallery.

Greater Wellington Chair Daran Ponter has warmly welcomed today’s Government announcement on infrastructure funding, saying it removes any lingering doubts over the future of RiverLink, Wairarapa rail upgrades and new rolling stock for the Capital Connection.

“We’ve been waiting for certainty on the future of these projects, and now we have it,” Daran says.

Improvements at the Melling intersection ensure several key objectives of the RiverLink programme are achieved – a resilient and safer transport network for all travellers, improved access to Wellington City from the Hutt Valley as well as enabling economic and urban growth.

Cr Ponter also described the Government’s approach as far-sighted investment, given its focus on public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure.

The NZ Upgrade Programme will invest $211 million in infrastructure upgrades to increase line capacity and support increased frequency of Metlink and Capital Connection services. The package includes the refurbishment of the Capital Connection and a range of safety improvements.

Artist Lisa Reihana, well-established and respected in Aotearoa and internationally, was one of the judges, along with Sir Derek Lardelli and Kura Te Waru Rewiri.

Reihana said the heartfelt effort behind each artwork was a great

reminder of the values and matauranga that Maori carry.

Seeing the exhibition live in person Gary says captures the true essence of the works.

The Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Exhibition will tour Aotearoa, starting in August, for the next two years, before a fresh competition begins.

Hutt City Council has voted to apply to become a Living Wage accredited employer, as part of its deliberations on the upcoming 2021–2031 Long Term Plan.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says the decision will complete Council’s Living Wage journey – after it resolved to pay directly employed workers the Living Wage back in 2018.

“As a long-standing advocate for the Living Wage, I am incredibly proud of our Council moving towards becoming an accredited Living Wage employer,” Campbell says.

Hutt City Council currently pays all directly employed staff the Living Wage, and several Council contracts require workers to be paid the Living Wage too. This includes Council’s street cleaning contract, and the city’s new kerbside rubbish and recycling service.

The Mayor and Councillors have agreed to Council applying to become an accredited Living Wage employer by the end of the year. The application will then be assessed, with accreditation expected to be awarded after that.

inbrief news Elder abuse prevention Age Concern New Zealand are calling for funding to be invested its vital elder abuse prevention and education programmes which complement the Governments Elder Abuse Response Service (EARS).

“The Elder Abuse Response Service is great for supporting the victims of elder abuse, but we need this same investment in education and prevention of elder abuse, Stephanie Clare, Chief Executive at Age Concern New Zealand says.

“We need to support our EARS workforce with professional development and supervision and educate New Zealanders to prevent this horrific abuse happening in our families and communities across Aotearoa.

We want to make sure everyone knows they have a duty to protect the rights of older people to make their own decisions and choices and prevent elder abuse. But many of us do not, especially with our own family members.

Cowboy Bonsai

Ingredients:

s 5 tablespoons olive oil, divided s 1 tablespoon butter s 8 cups thinly sliced onions (about 3 pounds) s 3 garlic cloves, minced s 1/2 cup port wine s 2 cartons (32 ounces each) beef broth s 1/2 teaspoon pepper s 1/4 teaspoon salt s 24 slices French bread baguette (1/2 inch thick) s 2 large garlic cloves, peeled and halved s 3/4 cup shredded Gruyere or Swiss cheese

1. In a Dutch oven, heat 2 tablespoons oil and butter over medium heat. Add onions; cook and stir until softened, 10-13 minutes. Reduce heat to mediumlow; cook, stirring occasionally, until deep golden brown, 30-40 minutes. Add minced garlic; cook 2 minutes longer.

2. Stir in wine. Bring to a boil; cook until liquid is reduced by half. Add broth, pepper and salt; return to a boil. Reduce heat. Simmer, covered, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour.

3. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 400°. Place baguette slices on a baking sheet; brush both sides with remaining 3 tablespoons oil. Bake until toasted, 3-5 minutes on each side. Rub toasts with halved garlic.

4. To serve, place twelve 8-oz. broiler-safe bowls or ramekins on baking sheets; place 2 toasts in each.

Ladle with soup; top with cheese. Broil 4 in. from heat until cheese is melted.

Cowboy Joel from Wainuiomata has had a lifetime connection with bonsai and after immigrating to New Zealand from South Africa five years ago he bought that passion with him.

In doing so he left behind 300 of his personally raised Bonsai Trees and thousands of other trees he looked after in his home nursery.

His love of bonsai started when he was in his 20’s during a visit to an uncle in another town who had two bonsai’s.

“He took me out and showed me how to find the right trees and I just started and went crazy.”

He collected 22,000 seeds from one tree and with his wife built a nursery to raise and care for his growing collection.

“We didn’t even know how to germinate them so we took them to a nursery and they charged us ten cents a seed to get them started and over the next 20 years they were our stock trees,” Joel says.

Coming to New Zealand and unable to bring any of his bonsai with him Joel has started a small collection from scratch.

His personal favourite tree in Africa is the Acacia but coming to New Zealand he had to learn the new trees and restart a new collection

and make new bonsai friends.

“I’ve always loved the variety of approaches to the art of bonsai,” Joel says.

“There are 3 ways to technically achieve a bonsai. Firstly, grow it from seed. Secondly, source one from the wilds and thirdly, purchase a nursery stock tree that has potential and pot it on. The third way was the easiest in a new country and especially where nurseries and hardware stores have so much stock.”

Only four New Zealand species are manageable and suitable, the Beech, Kowhai, Totara and Coprosma.

His New Zealand collection is four years old and slowly growing consisting of the few native trees that lend themselves to bonsai and Kowhai trees are one of his favourites.

“There were a few reasons why I preferred this native, not only it’s lovely yellow bell like flowers but also because it’s leaves were the same shape and size as my African favourite, the Black Monkey thorn,” he says.

“One difficulty is pruning to promote side growth. Wherever you prune, you only get one new shoot at the end instead of four or more like other trees. So it takes a lot of thought and hope to develop more branches when they are young.”

With the Kowhai he has created a living art expression in the style of a Hobbit house.

Roses as we all know are a deciduous plant and in winter they shed their leaves and have a nice rest till the advent of spring.

With the weather being so mild to date, our friends the roses, are still in leaf with some flowers on a few plants.

The longer this situation continues, reduces the rest period before next spring and can effect their possible potential in the coming season.

Wet, cold weather along with a few hard frosts does wonders in cleaning up problems of pests and diseases that the previous season saw.

The question arises, ‘What should we do with our roses at this time?’

We could just leave them and hope that winter will do the job for us sometime before we need to prune in July/August period.

Alternatively we can help force them into having a rest now by cutting all the canes of our bush and standard roses back to half.

At the same time we might as well remove any dead, diseased or spindly canes.

Then we can do one of two things; spray the reduced canes with Lime Sulphur to burn off any remaining foliage and assist in wiping out any disease spores or pests harboring on the canes.

(In other words we are doing what a few hard frosts would do.)

This would be a good spray to use if you have had a fair bit of disease problems through the season.

The alternative for those that have not had too much in the way of problems, is to spray the canes with Wallys Liquid Copper.

We all want to have the best looking roses, free of diseases and pests and if we do the right thing by working with the natural forces of Nature it becomes a relatively simple task.

Insect pests such as aphids and scale prefer nitrogen rich sappy growth so avoid using rose fertilisers and Nitrophoska and your pest problems will lessen.

Instead use natural products such as blood & bone, compost, dolomite and sheep manure pellets.

By not using these man made fertilisers will also greatly reduce your disease problems.

Aphids will still appear on your roses in the spring but a simple natural spray of Super Pyrethrum and Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil will give you safe control.

Diseases that may have been on your roses this past season will have

released spores which are harboring in the soil waiting for spring.

To help eradicate these spores spray the roses and soil underneath with potassium permanganate (Condys Crystals) To aid the soil life action you can drench the soil a couple of times over the next few months with a combination of Mycorrcin and Magic Botanical Liquid.(MBL) These two products feed the soil life and clean up harmful residues in the soil.

If you would like to add more beneficial microbes to your soil then drench the soil with either Micro-Life or Bio-Mangus Fish fertiliser. (Using non chlorinated water) Now having achieved a healthier soil do not ruin it by applying Rose fertiliser or Nitrophoska as these products are acidic and harm both worms and soil life.

The more worms you have in your soil the healthier the soil and plants will be.

If you have low or no worm populations you have a problem that needs to be rectified.

After your final pruning at winter’s end you can further enhance the health of your roses by applying all the minerals that they would like in their diet.

The once a year application of Ocean Solids and Wallys Unlocking your soil will achieve this.

In spring the new growths on our roses are very healthy and we should do all that we can to maintain this healthy aspect.

A 2 to 4 weekly spray over the foliage and soil of MBL and Mycorrcin will greatly assist.

The reason that the foliage is so healthy is because the soil food web has been able to grow and expand and we need to protect this fragile life.

The avoidance of chemicals is a must and also one needs to consider what is coming out of your tap.

Chlorine is used to kill microbes in our drinking water and it will also knock back the beneficial soil life.

During winter and spring with ample rainfall we have no need to water and everything is healthier as a result. I came to realise this a few years so to overcome the problem I placed suitable filters on my outside taps to remove the chlorine.

This made a big difference to all my plants and gardens in fact the water was just about as good as rain. (not quite as rain has other benefits lost

to tap water) New Season Roses are now starting to come into garden centres and many will pick out a few new specimens to add to their existing collection.

If you buy a rose that is potted up in a bag in a mix to keep the roots moist then you only have to ensure that the mix is kept moist till you plant out.

Bare rooted roses should be ‘heeled in’ till you are ready to plant out.

(Heeled in means digging a hole and temporarily planting them in a group) The most important aspect in planting new roses is to place them in a spot where they are going to get plenty of sunlight.

The less sun the poorer the flowering and the more scraggly the rose.

The first season should be devoted to obtaining as much foliage as possible without being concerned with the number or size of the flowers.

The reason is, the more leaves, the quicker the establishment.

To obtain ample leaves make some liquid animal manure and give the roses a drink of this every 2-3 weeks diluted down 1:10.

Chicken manure is best but any other manure will also do.

If you are planing a rose in a new bed or in a new spot away from existing roses here is another little tip.

Place half to a full spade of dirt, from an existing rose bed into the base of the planting hole.

The soil will have the right beneficial fungi that works in conjunction with roses to assist their ability to feed and gather moisture.

You have, taken away the delay period that would happen for the beneficial fungi and the new rose to establish a relationship.

Planting in an existing rose bed already has the right fungi in action.

(If you haven’t killed it with chemicals) In the first season, two other points should be remembered.

Roses need ample water to establish and the soil should never be allowed to dry out, but don’t overwater.

Secondly if cutting any flowers off a new rose do not take much or any of the stem that has leaves on it.

Leaves means energy from the sun for faster and better establishment.

If you have any roses that you wish to move, now is the time to do it; cut the canes back to half, then lift and move.

One last tip do not cut or prune your roses on a cool/cold, moist day as silver leaf disease can enter the wounds. Always wait for a sunny drier day.

A partnership between Hutt City Council and Kokiri Marae will see essential community services delivered to the Naenae community from a new base in the town centre.

Kokiri Marae provides social services with a holistic wrap around approach encompassing education, health initiatives, cultural values, and aspirations.

From June, Kokiri Marae will operate from a Naenae base, adjoined to a new council-run pop-up community space in the middle of Hillary Court.

Mayor Campbell Barry says he’s thrilled that the Naenae Community will have direct access to Kokiri’s services, and that their presence will add social value to the town centre.

“We know that Kokiri are well placed to deliver whanau ora services to people in our city, and as a Council, it’s our job to support them to do that,” Campbell Barry says.

Osaka takes admirable stand for mental health Naomi Osaka’s withdrawal from the French Open due to depression has been a long time coming in hindsight.

When Osaka confirmed she would not fulfill her media commitments at Roland Garros, many felt the move by the multiple-time Grand Slam champion was a moment of diva attitude.

It is anything but that.

Osaka has battled to handle the media scrutiny of her success.

She’s thrived on the court despite

battling her mental health issues off it.

Here is an extremely talented player who has never enjoyed the media spotlight and is considered by many respected journalists as introverted and quiet.

She has cried at press conferences, tested-up at trophy ceremonies and ended media commitments because it all became too much.

Just because you are a talented sports person it does not mean you have the tools to handle the intense

scrutiny that comes with it.

Osaka has dropped many hints about this issue and those in charge of the French Open have missed a lot of red flags.

Yes, the media has a job to do and while they are an easy target for fans with a keyboard and a social media account, they continue to have a right to ask players questions post-match.

Tennis officials must be more aware of the mental health of their players.

Tennis is better for having Osaka on the court, she gives the women’s game credibility and the hope for a brighter future.

It’s also been nice to see current players come out in support of Osaka.

Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were two notable names to express their feelings on the matter.

Djokovic even gave a nod towards the media for the role they play.

Williams, while known for her temper tantrums and diva qualities,

has long supported Osaka since Williams was beaten by her in a US Open final and was booed for it by the New York crowd.

Williams consoled Osaka that night as the young star hung her head and moved her bat down to her eyes so no one could see her cry.

There has never been more pressure on athletes than there is today and the 23-year-old Japanese star has taken a much-needed stand and should be applauded.

The overwhelming response from players and the bumper crowd at last weekend’s Parkway v Wainuiomata College Old Boys game, was that it must become a permanent Queen’s Birthday fixture. And other codes are keen to jump on this waka to possibly create a Derby Day sports festival.

The concept is the brainchild of Wainuiomata College’s Moana

Kuma who says “The fixture is a nod to our town’s history and another way of bringing our community together. The game was probably secondary to what was a mini-reunion for the players, teachers and supporters alike. We never expected such a huge crowd, but it reflects the keen interest in such a game and shows again just how awesome our community is.”

The game itself, won by Parkway College Old Boys 7-5, was a typically rugged and physical affair. There were glimpses of yesteryear from Wainuiomata College Old Boys first five eighth/ halfback Tui Bradbrook and centre Tama Renata in the first half; while controversial selection Piri Weepu provided some welcome composure to the Parkway effort once injected into the battle.

Whilst the pace of the game was understandably pedestrian at best, the contact was absolutely brutal. Hence, the injury toll did mount in the second half.

As expected the game was played in the best of spirits with referee Mayor Campbell Barry commenting later that his only difficulty was managing the 30 assistant referees on the field!

The match raised $911 for Wai-

nuiomata High School’s rugby programme. Kuma and team captains Alec Leala and Justin Va’a acknowledge the fantastic support from local sponsors, Ninox Construction and real estate agent Des Smith.

A proud Wainuiomata resident, Smith was beaming at the after match function when he said, “The Wainuiomata community was the winner today!”
