Top aviator

By Frank Neill Wainuiomata’s Acting Sergeant Rebekah Richardson has been named the RNZAF’s Aviator of the Year for 2022.

Acting Sergeant Richardson grew up in Wainuiomata and joined the Air Force at age 21, following in her father’s footsteps.

After basic training she chose logistics as her trade.

“She shows incredible determi-

nation, perseverance and ability to build relationships and trust with key stakeholders,” he said.

“Acting Sergeant Richardson is an outstanding ambassador for the Air Force.”

“Logistics appealed to me the most because it is so diverse and there are a lot of opportunities.

It’s not one job for your whole career,” she says.

Nine years later she has been a part of numerous international Defence Force missions across Asia, the Middle East and Antarctica, and New Zealand’s support to Ukraine in the immediate

aftermath of the invasion by Russia earlier this year.

However, her career highlight to date was being deployed on a humanitarian aid and disaster relief operation to Papua New Guinea in 2018 and seeing the tangible difference her job made to the local population.

“We were deployed for a couple of weeks delivering aid to remote locations,” she says.

“It was great seeing the impact we were having delivering the aid to them. Seeing the thankful looks on the locals’ faces is something I’ll never forget.”

Receiving recognition was “a lot to take in,” Acting Sergeant Richardson says.

“I pride myself in going the extra mile for our customers, so to speak, and I get a thrill knowing I have helped our people to the best of my ability.”

Acting Sergeant Richardson is posted to Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand at Trentham, where she is in the tri-service Deployed Personnel Support Centre, providing personal and administrative support to deploying individuals across a wide range of missions.

It is part of the Movember movement’s initiative to raise money for mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

To date, the Movember movement has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects worldwide since it began in 2003.

The freshly waxed bus-staches will be seen on all NZ Bus’s Wellington City and Eastbourne bus routes, and will also make an appearance across the region, Metlink says.

“Metlink and NZ Bus are proud to back Movember and men’s health. The cause has really grown on us,” Metlink General Manager Samantha Gain said.

“The giant mos and any lip luggage grown by our front-line team will hopefully boost the fundraising effort.”

This is the second year that Metlink has supported the Movember initiative.

Ian Grose, NZ Bus Chief Financial Officer, who is co-ordinating the campaign, said they raised $20,000 for Movember last year.

This included $10,000 from the operator, who matched the total amount donated to their ‘team’.

“We’re thrilled to be supporting Movember again and will match every dollar up to ten thousand dollars raised through the NZ Bus Team on the Movember website.”

First year 12 Dux in school’s history

Ryan Nelson made history when he became the first year 12 student to be named Dux in Wainuiomata High School’s history.

Ryan was presented with the Wainuiomata High School Cup and Medal for Dux at the school’s senior prizegiving on 3 November.

Along with the top academic award, Ryan received the Otago University Dux Scholarship of $6,000.

He was also presented a cup for the year 13 faculty award for science.

Ryan’s aim is to be a doctor, and next year he will study first year health science at Otago University.

His Dux award came after he placed first in three subjects at NCEA level 3 and second in another level 3 subject.

He placed first in biochemical/ te kukuwhatanga, in redox, equilibria and thermochemical properties, and in trendy relationships.

His second placing came in bright sparks level 3.

Dear Editor, Why is New Zealand celebrating a tradition that is not ours?

Why buy ugly masks for Halloween?

Why can’t New Zealand have its own traditions?

I had my TV turned up a few more clicks to drown out the bangs of fireworks being let off.

P e o p l e d o n’t t h i n k o f their pets when giving their children thrills. I wonder who gets the thrills more: the kids or the adults?

Fireworks are a waste of money. They have become louder and scare the heck out of animals.

They stopped selling sky rockets but instead made a firework with multitudes of miniature-type rockets that still go for over 100 yards All sales of fireworks to the public should be stopped.

Here is New Zealand trying to save the Kiwi birds and other birds. Instead you are scaring them to death or burning down the hills where they roam.

Public displays should be the only venue.

Smoking was banned so why can’t fireworks be. Fireworks do more damage to forest and bush. Trees and plants are our providers of oxygen. Remember that. It will take years for those trees to grow back after any fire.

Arsonists should be made to go out on tree planting teams and plant 700 trees a day by law. Don’t lock them up in prison on our taxes. Get them working.

The main thing is to stop Guy Fawkes completely. Hillsides don’t look very pretty after a fire. Neither would cooked birds.

Well known resident celebrates 80th

Well known Wainuiomata resident Lorraine Tiraha celebrated her 80th birthday on Monday 7 November, and she is still working at PAK’nSAVE Petone and as a Justice of the Peace.

“I have no intentions of retiring,” she says.

Lorraine has worked for PAK’nSAVE for more than 25 years. After taking a break following her first two-plus decades with the supermarket, she was shopping there one day around five years ago when the manager asked her to come back in a pastoral care role.

“I love that place,” she says about the Petone supermarket.

“The staff are cared for amazingly well. The boss has a heart for the person who is in need,” she says.

Lorraine’s decades of service as a Justice of the Peace began when former Hutt City and Wellington Regional Councillor Betty van Gaalen introduced her to the idea.

“I remember Betty van Gaalen persuading me to be considered for JP services.

“I didn’t think that was for me, but she persisted.

“The only reason I was won over in the end is because it is service to people – a free service.

“People are precious.

“It isn’t money that makes the world go round, it is love and care.

“Over the years I have married people and I have conducted funerals.

I have had the privilege to meet a lot of people over time.

Life has been amazing,” she says.

Lorraine and her late hus-

band Dan were also very well known as pastors of the Apostolic Church in Wainuiomata for some 20 years.

One of the lessons she learned from that is that “little can be developed into much”.

Another lesson she learned was that “good things can come out of humble beginnings”.

When she and her husband were the pastors, the Wainuiomata Apostolic Church comprised a very diverse group of people.

“Integration is a beautiful thing.

“It doesn’t just happen. You have to work at it.

“I do believe everybody needs a measure of faith. It only has to be the size of a mustard seed.”

Lorraine and Dan came to Wainuiomata to live around 45 years ago. They moved from Whanganui because her husband got transferred in his public service role as a meat inspector.

Dan worked first at the Gear meatworks, then at both the meatworks and the abattoir in Ngauranga.

“I love Wainuiomata,” Lorraine says.

“I wouldn’t live anywhere else. Home is where the heart is and for me that is Wainuiomata.

“I love Wainuiomata. I’m a millionaire because I live here,” she adds, noting that she does not actually have a million dollars in money and assets, but riches in her interaction and involvement with people.

“We love the community.

“In our hearts there is something very special about community – red, yellow, black and white.”

GARDENING THIS WEEK Grass pest problems : By Wally Richards There are three insect pests that are the main problem ones in lawns; grass grubs, porina and black beetle grubs.

The affect they have on your lawns depends on the number of the pests in a given area.

A few, will hardly be noticed, where a good number per square foot will damage the grasses and be easy to see. Damage can be seen by bare spots, brown, dead areas or discolored grasses.

Birds are a very good indicator that there are grubs in the lawn when they spend their time scratching and pecking in certain areas.

I have gardeners ringing me up about this time of the year to say they have grass grubs in their lawns or that they have dead spots.

My first question is, how do you know you have grass grubs?

They usually reply that there is dead areas or that birds are ripping certain areas apart.

Nether of these are a good indication that there are currently grass grubs actively eating roots near the surface.

If there are dead areas which have appeared in the spring or early summer then it is likely that grass grubs did cause the problem by eating the roots of the grasses in the autumn and into the winter.

The grasses would have appeared ok in the winter, even though they had little root system left, because they were not actively growing.

In the spring when they started to grow on the root system left, which was insufficient to support the grass, thus it browns off and dies.

In the meantime the grubs have burrowed deep into the soil to pupate and then emerge about October to December as beetles.

There may well be a few grass grubs in the lawn at this time and by lifting some turf you can soon find out and how many there are per square foot.

If there are a few like 1 to 5 then its hardly worth while bothering with a treatment, a greater number would be worth while to treat.

Most likely the reason the birds are working the lawn is for porina caterpillars which live in the soil. Porina come up in the early part of the evening to feed at the base of the grasses.

These are easy to control by firstly mowing the lawn to allow the spray you are going to use, to reach the base of the grasses where they feed.

Then in late afternoon mix Neem Tree Oil at the rate of 5mils per litre of warm water and apply that to your lawn area. Using a lawn boy will do the best job to get a good coverage.

(Note EPA has just about completed our application under the new requirements for all Neem Oils and we should be back selling later this month.)

That night when the grubs come up to feed they will get a dose of Neem and that turns off their ability to ever eat again.

If the birds eat them they will not be affected and worms in the soil will be ok too.

The time to treat for grass grubs in the lawns is in the autumn when the soil is moist and they are feeding near the surface. The other time is when they are beetles which is about now.

With porina they can be treated all year round whenever they are present.

Treatment for grass grubs and black beetle grubs can either be a strong chemical one or a safe natural one such as Wallys 3 in 1 for lawns which is a mix of Eucalyptus and Tea Tree oils.

This will not harm wild life, pets or worms, where the chemical ones will.

To treat the grass grub beetles you can use the method described in my first book, Wally’s Down to Earth Gardening Guide, extract; Grass grub adults emerge in October, (as beetles) and are active until about mid-December, depending on weather conditions and exactly where they are in New Zealand.

The cooler the temperature, the later they emerge. The adults will start to emerge in mild conditions, when the soil temperature reaches about 10 degrees, they then mate, fly, eat and lay eggs in the short space of time between dusk and early evening.

As they tend to fly towards light, you are most likely to know they’re there when the flying beetles hit your lighted window panes.

This very attraction for the light has become one of our best weapons in controlling the pest in its adult stage.

You can set up a grass grub beetle trap by placing a trough, such as the one used when wall-papering, directly underneath a window near a grassed area.

Fill the trough with water to about two-thirds of its capacity, then place a film of kerosene on top of the water.

Put a bright light in the window, the beetles fly towards the lit window, hit the glass and fall into the trough. The kerosene acts as a trap, preventing the fallen beetles from climbing out.

You can extend this method to areas away from the house by using a glass tank, such as might be used for an aquarium.

Place the empty tank into a tray containing several inches of water (and the kerosene), and position a light inside

the glass tank.

By adding a sheet of ply or something similar over the top of the tank, you will ensure that the light shines only through the sides of the tank above the waiting water and kerosene.

It is better to use a dome-shaped battery-powered light rather than an ordinary torch for this job as the bigger light makes the trap more effective.

If the tray and tank are raised off the ground and placed on something like a table, you will get an even better result.

However you set up your beetle trap, this is a very good method to dispose of the pests.

Simply get rid of all the beetles caught the next morning by flushing down the toilet or feeding to chooks..

Run this system (call it Wally’s Grass Grub Beetle Catcher, if you like) from just before dusk to about 2 or 3 hours after sunset.

We know now how to make the grubs’ preference for light work against them, but light can also work in their favour.

If you have un-curtained windows in rooms which are lit at night, you will find grass grub beetles from yours and neighboring lawns will be attracted to the area during the early hours of the evening.

Street lighting is probably the worst offender, and people with areas of lawn near street lights often find those are the parts worst-affected by grass grubs.

The beetles will eat the foliage of various plants such as roses, beans and citrus while on the wing.

Those plants that are being eaten can be sprayed with Neem Tree Oil. If the populations of beetles are very high then in the early part of the evening take a torch and check the plants that are being eaten.

If you see lots of the brown beetles then mix up a spray of Wallys Super Pyrethrum added and go out and spray the pests.

The pyrethrum is a quick knock down and should wipe out good numbers of them.

The more beetles you can kill means less damage to your lawns next year.

Ditch sugary drinks

Wainuiomata schools are being urged to introduce “water only” policies by the New Zealand Dental Association (NZDA), starting with the 30-day Switch to Water challenge this month.

“Although the numbers of schools voluntarily introducing ‘water only’ policies isn’t large overall, teachers and staff in schools that have made the change have reported a positive impact on learners,” NZDA Sugary Drinks Spokesperson Dr Rob Beaglehole said.

Dr Beaglehole made this observation in association with National Oral Health Day, which took place on 4 November.

National Oral Health Day also coincided with the NZDA Switch to Water Challenge – where people give up sugary drinks and instead drink water for 30 days this November.

“It’s really easy to sign up to Switch to Water, so we urge all Kiwis to give it a go,” Dr Beaglehole said.

Each year thousands of people across the country sign up with

their whƗnau, schools, workplaces or as individuals to take the 30-day Switch to Water Challenge. It is a great way to start new habits and kick old ones.

NZDA says that with the Ministry of Education’s consultation on healthy drinks in schools being effectively deferred to a report due out by late 2023 there is a need to step up efforts in schools.

“Dentists have a role to encourage their local schools to only provide healthy drinks, these being water, unflavored milk and non-dairy milk alternatives,” Dr Beaglehole said.

Locals win notable book award

Wainuiomata’s husband and wife team of Dahlia and Mani Malaeulu have won a 2022 Storylines Notable Book Award.

Theywon their award for the book “Tama SƗmoa”, which was the only Pasifika work among the winning titles.

The award was presented by Storylines Children's Literature Charitable Trust Te Whare Waituhi Tamariki Aotearoa in Auckland on 6 November.

This trust aims to inspire young New Zealanders and their whanau to enjoy the magic of reading, especially reading books created for them by New Zealand writers and illustrators.

Every year since 1999, Storylines has produced an annual list of outstanding books for children and

young people published by New Zealanders.

There was a record number of entries this year across Aotearoa and the winning titles were selected by expert panels in each category.

“Tama SƗmoa” is a story based on Sione, Lima, Tavita and Filipo who are high school friends, uso or brothers.

T hey a re pa r t of a specia l letter-writing project that helps to start a brave new conversation, an open and honest talanoa with themselves starting with the words “Dear Uso”.

They share the cultural challenges they face, and without realising it, their need to belong, to be accepted and the impact this has on their wellbeing overall.

“Tama SƗmoa” includes a space created for 14 Samoan male students

and educators to share their own boys-to-men stories, lessons and journeys to help today’s tama SƗmoa, our tama Pasifika, to be better understood and supported in succeeding as themselves.

Four of those contributing authors also live in Wainuiomata – Elijah Solomona, Simati Leala, Emmanuel Solomona and Aleki Leala. Another author, Dr Sadat Muaiava lived in Wainuiomata before moving to Wellington recently.

The other authors are Isaac Sanele, Senio Sanele, Okirano Tilaia, Israel Risati Sua-Taulelei, Saul Luamanuvae-Su’a, Atama Cassidy, Darcy Solia, Liko Alosio and Mikaele Savali.

She and Mani were “so excitied” that “Tama SƗmoa” had won a Storylines Notable Book Award, Dahlia said.

Acting Out, Wainuiomata’s youth musical theatre, held a highly successful open day at the Louise Bilderbeck Hall on 30 October.

“We had a huge turnout. It was very successful,” Acting Out’s President, Jeremy Yuile says.

“We had more than 40 kids” at the open day, held to give young people the opportunity to see what Acting Out is all about.

Acting Out has been operating for about five or six years with the aim of making it affordable for Wainuiomata tamariki to experience theatre.

It does this by aiming to put on the best

show possible each year.

This year’s show was “Into the Woods Jr” and next year’s show will be “Frozen”.

In addition, Acting Out is also involved in other performances. This year, for example, Acting Out will take part in the Christmas concert that will be held in the Pioneer Church on Coast Road.

Each Sunday Acting Out holds a session at the Louise Bilderbeck Hall from 3pm to 5pm during school term times.

There the young people learn singing, dancing, performing, projection and just standing up in front of audiences.

Williamson silences social media doubters Kane Williamson proved the doubters wrong against Ireland.

The Black Caps captain has copped it from all sides for his perceived lack of runs and slow scoring rate during the Twenty 20 World Cup in Australia.

However, his scintillating 61 off 35 balls in a must win game against Ireland was proof that form is temporary and class is permanent.

In what is likely a case of New Zealand cricket fans getting greedy and letting the last seven or eight years of success go to their heads, many wanted Williamson out of the team at any cost.

Such was the social media buzz, that many fans did not care who replaced him at No 3 in the batting order or as captain.

Williamson’s form has not been up to world class standards over

the past 18 months, thanks in part to injury, but he is the best batter New Zealand has produced and we should feel fortunate to pick him in any format he wants to play.

Cricket is not like rugby in this country, world class players are few and far between, The luxury to throw Williamson on the T20 scrap heap isn’t there.

made the semifinals, was a timely reminder for cricket fans not to get greedy.

It is always a positive, in my view, for fans to be objectively critical of players when they underperform, that shows people care and they want the team and players they support to be held to a high standard but the chatter around Williamson over the past fortnight was similar to an ungrateful child

complaining about the presents they got on Christmas Day. Make no mistake, Williamson is a gift to cricket in this country and much like Ross Taylor, when he does retire, the hole he leaves in the team, in any format, will not be able to be replaced by one person.

New sports record for high school

Three Wainuiomata High School students won player of the year in their sports at this year’s College Sport Wellington Awards.

This is the first time in its history that the school has won three awards by College Sport Wellington.

“We are very proud of our school that punches above its weight,” says Wainuiomata High School’s

Sports Co-ordinator Peter Cowan.

Alexis Tauaneai won the award for Rugby League player of the year, Charvarna Williams the award for Lawn Bowls player of the year and Diamond Mass the award for K්orahi player of the year.

Wainuiomata High School’s 2022 sportswoman of the year, Alexis had an outstanding year in Rugby League, including being selected for the under 18

Samoan team which competed in the Pacific Youth Cup. She represented New Zealand as a member of the country’s under 18 Rugby League Clubs team.

Alexis was also selected for the Wellington Rugby League nines team, where she won a most valuable player award and was selected in the tournament team.

She was also selected for the Upper Central Stallions under 18 team, and played for the Wainuio-

mata Rugby League Club.

Charvarna was selected ro the Bowls Wellington under 18 team, helping the team to victory in the North Island Quadrangular tournament in July.

She also performed outstandingly in singles competition, and was runner-up in the Wellington Secondary School singles championships this year.

as a netball award in the school’s 2022 sports awards.

Diamond has been named in the Aotearoa K්orahi team, along with fellow Wainuiomata High School student Tiaki Nager-Ropitini.

The Aotearoa K්orahi team will play at the Junior National Competition in Hamilton in November and will also play against The New Zealand Area Schools team.

Police warn about scam If you receive an email saying your computer has explicit illegal material on it, the email is a scam, Police are warning.

An email scam is circulating that references Police and other justice sector partners, the Police say.

It claims authorities have done a search of the email recipient’s computer and located explicit illegal

material.

The recipient is directed to reply within 48 hours or a warrant will be issued for their arrest.

“This email is a scam and anyone who receives it should not reply under any circumstances,” the Police say.

Although some versions of the email do not specifically reference

money, other similar scams involve the recipient being issued a “fine” when they respond.

While the nature and specific details of scams often varies, it’s important to note that Police and other government agencies will never contact you out of the blue and ask for your password, credit card or bank details.

Police have received several reports of this scam and enquires are under way.

Anyone who received this email is asked to forward it directly to the Police Cybercrime Team: cybercrime@police.govt.nz.

Police recommend taking a cautious approach to unsolicited emails.

“Trust your gut instinct – if it

doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t,” they say.

Market gift to playcentre Wood Hatton Playcentre has received a donation of $160 from the proceeds of the 29 October Wainuiomata Market.

Following the market, its organiser Wira Te Paa presented the $160 to Community Board Member Lesa Bingley for Wood Hatton Playcentre of which Lesa is a member.

The Wainuiomata Market is “a great market,” says Wainuiomata-based Hutt City councillor Gabriel Tupou.

"Despite the bad weather, those who did turn up [to the 29 October

market] showed their generosity by donating to the cause for the month – Wood Hatton Playcentre, which I attended with my Mum Faith many moons ago."

"There are a range of high quality crafts at these monthly markets, from Rick's Chocolates to baby knitwear and fragrant candle melts.

“It is certainly worth checking out for Christmas gift buying and supporting local vendors and businesses.

“Whaea Wira does an amazing job organising the markets," Gabriel says.

Hutt a healthy place In the eight years the Healthy Families NZ initiative has been running, Hutt Valley has shown the most improvement in health and wellbeing, based on the New Zealand Health Survey and B4 School Check data.

The local Healthy Families programme is led by Hutt City Council and Chief Executive Jo Miller says she’s pleased with the results of the Healthy Families NZ Summative Evaluation Report 2022.

“We know that in healthy environments children learn better,

workplaces are more productive, people are happier and healthier, and communities thrive.

“This community-led approach recognises that communities are best placed to understand and prioritise their own health and wellbeing.”

Jo Miller says over time many councils are adopting the tools and methods used by Healthy Families NZ, in particular shifting power to communities and enabling them to assert more ownership, voice and influence on issues

that affect them.

The report says the role of community voice, leadership, priority setting, and solution generation have been especially evident.

Across all Healthy Families NZ locations improvements tended to be seen in child health, particularly in body size and immunisations, along with tobacco use in adults, the report says.

Aspects of health and wellbeing that tended to show deterioration were mental health, cardiovascular-related indicators, and

an unmet need for primary health care. Changes in physical activity and oral health varied across the Healthy Families NZ location areas.

Healthy Families Hutt Valley is part of the Healthy Families NZ initiative, which has a vision to create a healthier Aotearoa by addressing the systems and environments that impact health and wellbeing. The approach is community-led, systems-focused and grounded in mƗtauranga MƗori.

The Summative Evaluation Report was commissioned by Te Whatu Ora and led by Te Kura TƗtai Hauora, School of Health at Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University of Wellington. The report is available on the Healthy Families NZ website, https://www. healthyfamiliesnz.org/publications.

There are 10 Healthy Families NZ communities across Aotearoa, and 11 lead providers that include iwi, whƗnau ora, local government, regional sports trusts and Pacific-led social change organisations.
