Community donates food to all walks of life Continued from page 1. “Whanau in Arms is for all walks of life and nationalities,” Fraggle Tawhai, coordinator of Wainuiomata Whanau in Arms, says. “People come for a variety of reasons.” “For some, it is just a top-up.” Fraggle’s passion lies in giving back to her community. She has been volunteering for Whanau in Arms since

March this year, runs Kaibosh weekly for those engaged with Kokiri Marae Health & Social Services and also volunteers at St Vincent de Pauls secondhand store, behind St Patricks Church. Whanau in Arms exists because the community is dedicated to helping all whanau from various backgrounds. “That is what ma kes it unique and keeps me coming

back” she says. “We are a close knit community who tautoko each other through hard times.” The food donated to Saint Vincent de Paul by Pak ‘n Save is transported into town by Frank Vailini who has also been part of the volunteer group for a very long time. He also delivers this service to Moera, Petone, Naenae, Pomare, Taita, Stokes Valley,

Heretaunga and Timberlea. Fraggle’s cousin, Grace, is inspired by the people she meets and is also a passionate volunteer. “It’s about helping others in need,” she says. “Wainuiomata is a great place to be.” Whanau in Arms operates out of the Wainuiomata Community Hub on Tuesday mornings from 9am to 12pm.

Deck construction coming up Just in time for summer, a community deck is being built by locals for locals next week in Queen Street. The main work will be happening from Monday October 12 to Wednesday October 14. Anything not finished will then be done in the days after. Esther King from Love Wainuiomata says: “We’re blown away by the support for this community decking. “We’ve managed to provide the materials but the only way it can be made is by generous individuals and businesses donating their time and skills. “We get to go ahead next week thanks to an amazing donation by Downer who are providing three skilled team members free of charge from Monday to Wednesday. Without Downer and other businesses like Exciting Future Solutions and K&D Contracting Ltd we wouldn’t be able to get this under way.” “We’re also really excited to have local youth involved from YOUth Inspire’s Licence to Work programme, contributing their volunteer morning on Tuesday, October 13,” Esther says. The deck will be big, finish-

Construction on the new deck will begin next week so keep an eye out for helpful volunteers from YOUth Inspire bringing the space to life. Whoa wicked wheels! Wicked Wheels is back again this Saturday 12, 11am to 2pm, after its first successful rodeo last school holidays. Bring your wheels (whatever that means to you) down to Queen Street, get outside, have fun and exercise. “Wicked Wheels is all about our kids being able to ride and play together here in our town’s heart,” Esther King from Love Wainuiomata says. “For this event, we’ll be making a special ride and play zone which will be car-free in Queen St with the length of Anzac Way in front of Wainuiomata Hall, and the carpark behind the hall. “This transforms Queen St Reserve into a safe, fun place for our kids to ride and play with whanau.” It’s also a great chance to bring a picnic or grab some kai, Esther adds. “Then hang out while the kids ride, swing, climb and try activities like decorating their favourite wheels. Or you can get moving and jump on a scooter yourself!” There will be a Bike Rodeo with jumps and ramps to try out too. Just bring your own favourite wheels from home or have a go on some of the wheels provided for everyone to use. If your wheels are unique you could be in to win a spot prize. Wicked Wheels is a free community event held every school holidays hosted by Love Wainuiomata, Healthy Families, Wainuiomata Community Hub and Wainuiomata Sportsville, with lots of great locals volunteering to make it happen.

The much anticipated Sportsville, which is to be built at Frederick Wise Park, has evolved into a plan that will be far more multi-use and multi-purpose than that initially planned, chairman of Sportsville David Meiklejohn says. Originally, the plans were to focus on the major local sports like rugby and football, but since then the outlook and vision for the hub space have changed.

Plans for the sports hub building were placed before the Hutt City Council in 2017 and included in the HCC Long Term Plan. A facility operating plan was then developed and resubmitted in 2018. But as part of that process the conclusion was reached that some clubs were happy with where they were and this lead to a rethink regarding what the facility needed to provide. “It has been very positive because it has made us go back to our roots and really look at

the facility we wanted and what was needed,” David says. With many community sports groups forced to relocate from their buildings on Moohan Street Old College, David hopes that Sportsville could help them in the future. “What we are doing now is a multipurpose indoor facility that will house many indoor-based sports and other groups.” Over the last year, they have been looking at different building structures that would work for the local community and

found a North American design, the Tension Membrane Structure, to be the best. “There are currently none in New Zealand so we’ve had to do a lot of research,” David says. The design is reminiscent of a large tent-like shape. Given the work that still needs to be done on the design, David says that they are hopeful that they can have a concrete plan by early next year and a Sportsville building by 2021. “It is about increasing participation for all sports.”

HighLight is an annual event on Labour Weekend that takes over Wellington and the Hutt’s Riddiford Garden with immersive light installations from international and local artists. It will be held from Friday, October 25 to Monday, October 28 from 8pm - 11pm, with free entry. Last year saw over 130,000 visitors. This year is themed around space, time, love and the outdoors, and has some pretty cool installations on display including a crashed UFO, massive lit up musical mushrooms, a giant neon peacock and snail and even a bit of UV spaghetti. The event is a hit for families and has a jam-packed programme with these installations and a world-class live performance line-up. HighLight visitors can enjoy a bustling food village made up of local favourites and fireworks above the gardens every evening.

Voting closes this Saturday Voting is still open for council elections. If you have lost or did not receive your voting papers, you can head to the Community Hub Library to make your vote. You can also drop your voting papers at the Library to make sure your votes get in on time. Voting will close at midday on October 12. By October 17 official results will be released.

Community Christmas events right around the corner Christmas is right around the corner. At least it is for the team at Love Wainuiomata who have already donned their elf hats to prepare for community Christmas events. There has already been lots of planning happening to bring Christmas joy to Wainuiomata starting on Saturday, November 30. First up is Wainuiomata’s Christmas Parade which will start at 10am and be followed by Christmas in the Nui from 11am to 3pm. Christmas in the Nui will bring Christmas to Queen St Reserve with performances, stalls, rides, activities and kai. To make this celebration a bright and vibrant one, Love Wainuiomata would love to see your group involved on the day. And who doesn’t love community Christmas cheer? Get in touch to get your group, club, school, church or business involved, with either or both events, at christmasinthenui@gmail.com or 020 4116 9759.

WAINUIOMATA CLEANFILL

The cleanfill site will be full soon so we’re looking to create a Community Liaison Group to help us design the future of the site. We want to know what you see as the future of the current site. While we are committed to making it a community reserve, the purpose and design of this reserve is open to your suggestions. By Megan Connolly

Twelve-year-old Deklin Frew-Parks has a big heart for the community he lives in. His love for the community runs so deep he can often be found helping out in the Community Hub, lending a hand to the local Volunteer Fire Brigade or just hanging out with family and friends. What he loves most is “all of the nice community and whanau around here, and the love and support,” he says. “If you don’t have a community of people, there wouldn’t be Wainui, everyone would just move over the hill.” The youngster is a year 7 at St Bernard’s College, Lower Hutt, but lives in Wainuiomata with his dad, Cam Parks.

Some of the favourite things he likes to do are go to the pools and BMX track with his dad. His hobbies include building “random things” like go-carts and tree huts. When he grows up he would love to be a firefighter or work with helicopters. A big reason he wants to be a firefighter is to follow in the footsteps of his family who have a long history of volunteering for the brigade. “Every single Christmas I would be on the fire truck in the parade,” he says. Deklin’s advice for being a good member of the community is simple. “Take a look around at the community and just give back,” he says. “Give back by helping, donating and volunteering.”

We have organised drop-in sessions where you will be able to share your vision and ask any questions. Wainuiomata Community Hub - Room 2 Wednesday 9 October Thursday 10 October 9am-12pm and 3-7pm 4.30-6.30pm If you’re not able to make one of these drop-in sessions, but would still like to contribute, please go to huttcity.govt.nz/haveyoursay-cleanfill

Problem drivers Dear Editor, There’s a problem with some drivers in Wainuiomata. They get fast cars and ignore road rules. Drivers on Wainuiomata’s residential roads are doing 70 kph in a 50kph zone. I wish these speeders would slow

down in our built up areas. These drivers hurt and kill innocent others. Speed Kills. Don’t they know they are driving a car which is 50 percent plastic? Look at the bumpers, all plastic! Plus you don’t get the full chassis.

Some drivers take silly risks, in and out of lanes, often tailgating. Some drivers get so close to the other person bumper, you would think it was a stretched limo! Peter Wells

“In this industry you have to have care running up and down your veins,” Woburn Home clinical nurse manager Anna Roberts says. She says working as a nurse in aged care is a fantastic way to gain skills while having the privilege to be part of the residents’ journey and hear their remarkable stories. “We are here to support the residents to maintain independence as well as providing meaningful activities for them.” Anna started working with Enliven more than 16 years ago as a healthcare assistant at the former Kilmarnock Heights Home. She was awarded a scholarship provided by Presbyterian Support Central for healthcare assistants to study nursing, and was able to keep working part-time while she studied. “Working at the home during that time really helped me in my nursing studies because I got to learn

more about evidence-based practices and health-related policies,” Anna says. She is a firm believer in Enliven’s philosophy of care, which works to combat the feelings of loneliness, helplessness and boredom that can come with ageing. “I’ve seen the difference it has made to the lives of elders.” Woburn Home registered nurse Jean Al-Daghestani says she has enjoyed building connections during her almost five years there. “You get to develop a relationship with the residents

and their families. When you help someone you get this lovely smile from them. “You even get the chance to dance or sing with them if the mood strikes!” In her time at Woburn, Jean has also gained skills in leadership, holistic and palliative care. She says every day is different and a new learning opportunity. Enliven is always on the look out for great nurses to join the team. School Holiday fun: Glow in the dark By Megan Connolly

The school holidays are on so that means mischief, mayhem and a whole lot of fun. Last Friday youngsters worked on creating spooky monster masks by decorating them with glow-in-the-dark

paint then took them into a dark room to see their masks come to life. And if a face mask wasn’t enough, youngsters drew fun shapes on their faces with more non-toxic glowing markers. There’s no way you wouldn’t be able to see these guys in the dark!

SPORTS TALK with Jacob Page

Spark Sport flop offers Sky a chance Like a phoenix from the ashes, it seems Sky Television has a chance to soar again thanks to Spark Sport. The Rugby World Cup coverage simply has not been good enough and not worth the $59.95 to $89.95 price tag. Personally, I’ve had only minor issues and nothing that has seriously impacted my viewing experience but it is clear I am one of the lucky few. Many sport fans, who have

bemoaned Sky Television’s absurdly high prices and overall monopoly on sport coverage in New Zealand, have likely realised the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. I have just signed up for all Sky Sport channels through their app Sky Sport Now for $39.95 a month on a 12 month contract. I get all sport channels and on demand sport content but no other Sky products, no movies,

no basic package, just sport that I can chromecast to my television. As a fan of rugby, league, cricket, American sport, golf and tennis majors, as well as all the one-off events, to me it is a no-brainer at that price point. Four years ago I was paying Sky over $100 a month for many channels I did not want or need. This option cuts the fat and gives me a price I can live with. Spark Sport have a lot of work to do and while their initial

response to technical issues was admirable, it is clear streaming issues are still occurring and now the company is trying to minimise the issue publicly while trumpeting the games where there are no issues. Well, I’m sorry, Spark Sport, patting yourselves on the back for delivering the service at the standard you should have is a silly way to get a sore arm. Public perception is starting to come back to Sky Sport, who

have lost a lot of subscribers over the past year but may have a chance to claw most of them back if they are smart with the packages they offer. Spark Sport must go back to the drawing board if they want to be a serious competitor for sporting rights in this country. This experience has been a failure. Perhaps that’s harsh but it is the reality and now Sky has a chance to capitalise.

Young tennis players start summer season next week By Megan Connolly

The Wainuiomata Tennis Club juniors are about to hit the court for a new season next Tuesday. There’s something for youngsters of all ages and stages, no matter the skill level says, coach and organiser of the junior division Antz Rivett. “It’s about getting kids running around and away from a computer,” she says. Junior bronze, silver and gold coaching will start on Tuesday, October 15 from 4pm. Junior Aces, aged five to seven and seven to nine, will start on Wednesday October 16 at 4pm. For the youngest tennis players, the afternoon sessions are more games-based than skills-based. But as they grow older they start building up their skills. “Registrations are still open,” Antz says. “You can just come along to one of the sessions and sign up there and then. We never turn people away.” The highly anticipated interclub tournaments begin next week. It involves keen players travelling around the Hutt Valley area playing other teams. Interclub is for tennis players aged eight and over. Contact Antz for more information about the junior club on 027 813 8807.
