Music man inspires

Thomas Te Taite is a music man and has been since he was a young boy.

His passion for music has followed him throughout his life and lead him down many paths both personally and in the music industry.

One of which is the Mana Ake programme the Tihei Rangatahi which gets youngsters and teens into a music space and recording studio at the Wainuiomata Community Hub. Thomas inspires and helps the children who not only want to pursue a career in the music industry, but give them hands-on experience in achieving things they may never have thought they could.

Thomas helps youth make music Continued from page 1.

Thomas’ own music journey started back when he was a child and developed as did his love for base guitar.

Leaving school at 16 years old, Thomas spent a year at a music course in Morehu some years later, learning more about base guitar and learning about music theory.

Then, by chance while helping friends audition for the music study course at Whitireia, landed himself a place too.

“It was the first time they had accepted somebody for base,” Thomas says.

Thomas went on to play in many different bands around the country and Wellington region.

But around seven years ago, Thomas fell in love with recording and making music digitally.

“My cousin explained to me that no one makes music on recorders, its all on computers now,” Thomas says.

After many years of forklift driving, and devouring all he could about the programs in his spare time, he was finally able to take the leap and use making

music to support his family, he says.

Now Thomas is bringing all he’s learned back to the community.

“I thought ‘wow, that’s something I’d love to do because it’s something I’d like to teach, and why not teach the children of the community,” Thomas says.

The Mana Ake programme,

which is part of the TiHei Rangatahi running out of the Wainuiomata Community Hub, teaches and helps youngsters with anyone who wants to pursue a career in the music industry.

“We’re trying to show music can be more than a hobby,” Thomas says.

The programme also works

“The power of music is huge, it brings families together,” Thomas says.

“If you’re interested all you have to do is come in and have a talk with me and we’ll see where you fit in,” Thomas says.

Some of my personal interests are in the arts like theatre and cinema.

In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors, socialising, drinking coffee and exploring my new home town.

Prior to moving to the North Island, I lived in Christchurch for five years and studied at Media and Communication and Cinema Studies at the University of Canterbury, focusing on journalism.

It was last year that I moved to sunny Marlborough to work for

the Blenheim Sun newspaper as a reporter.

During my time at the Blenheim newspaper, I got hands-on experience in networking and telling the important stories of a tightknit community.

The amount of people you get to know as a journalist in a small town is the most enjoyable part of the job and I am very much looking forward to meeting and getting to know everyone in this community too.

Mentoring Molly

For 21-year-old Maereana (Molly) Weston of Wainuiomata 2018 was huge.

It started with her working as a swimming instructor at the local summer pool.

Then she was picked up into the mentoring scheme being run by the Wellington Boys’ and Girls’ Institute (BGI).

“I was nominated by a guardian angel somewhere. Just as I was giving up, a door opened.”

Founded in 1883 in association with St John’s Church in Wellington, BGI runs programmes

that help young people build strong and life-long relationships alongside other life skills such as effective leadership and communication.

The scheme offers the opportunity for some to be paired with regional mayors, deputy mayors and other community leaders.

Molly was paired with Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace. During the year she attended five wananga. “One weekend every two months.” Ray’s involvement came with catch up days after every wananga.

She says she began last year being someone who was afraid

to step out of her comfort zone.

Now she finds herself reaching out to other young people who may have lost their way, even being at risk of suicide.

“I am asking them how they are feeling, how is school going?

Slowly they open up. And I used to be so focussed on myself.”

Molly amazed herself at the launch of the 2019 programme on Monday night. She introduced herself and led the warming up exercises for all those present.

As well as Ray, and Hutt councillor Tui Lewis, attendees included Wellington Mayor Justin Lester, Deputy Mayor Jill Day

and Porirua Mayor Mike Tana who are mentoring young Maori.

Molly says her year on the scheme has been the best experience. “Meeting new people, it’s the coolest thing ever” She is still swim instructing, at Naenae pool now the summer pool in Wainuiomata is closed for the winter.

Molly is also continuing her mentoring work with other young people as a volunteer.

“I like doing it, even if it is for free. If it saves a life!”

Colin the T-Rex has a new home The giant steel Tyrannosaurus Rex known as Colin has found a new home.

The 6.5-tonne metal sculpture is moving from behind his fence in Dowse Square to Avalon Park where he will take up residence in the eastern end of the pond. Colin was created by Hutt Valley firms Macaulay Metals and Real Steel for the 2018 HighLight: Carnival of Lights, and then donated for auction with all money raised going to support Te Omanga Hospice. Through donations from Chris MacKay and E Tu Awakairangi Public Arts Trust the sculpture has now been gifted to Hutt City Council.

Homelessness to be addressed

Moments of silence

Hutt City Council is about to start considering possible responses to homelessness in Lower Hutt, including Council’s contribution to tackling the problem.

Several options, one of which will become part of a plan to prevent vulnerable families becoming homeless and improve access to housing for those who are homeless was discussed on Monday.

As part of a homelessness strategy, already agreed to by Council, an action plan will be coordinated with the city’s social service providers, which have been a central part of the research and development of the strategy.

While homelessness is difficult to precisely measure, Council research shows it has been increasing over the past 12 years and it is now taking longer to get homeless individuals and families into settled accommodation.

inbrief news Smallest bird brought back to Wainui New Zealand’s smallest bird has flown into Wellington City. ZEALANDIA has translocated a total of 59 titipounamu (rifleman) into the ecosanctuary from Wainuiomata Mainland Island.

The translocation occurred over a number of days, with the official welcome on 17 March by Taranaki Whanui ki te Upoko o Te Ika. Capturing, processing, and transporting the birds involved over 60 people from many organisations.

The translocation provides another safe-guarded population for the small endemic bird, as well as a chance for more people to see and learn about them.

Bridge walk this weekend Wainuiomata Night walk is on this Saturday night from 7pm where walkers will go up the hill and around the square.

Working bee at Arakura Primary There will be a family working bee at Arakura Primary School from 4.30pm on Friday to work on and tidy the school grounds.

Family switches to cycling

Cecillia Visan-Logologo and her chilren Jayde Visan, Noelani, Elizabeth and Hana Logologo, have decided that this year they would have it as a family goal to cycle to and from school everyday.

“We wanted to challenge ourselves to adapt to a more active and healthy lifestyle,” Cecillia says.

The choice to change was an easy one and had many positive reasons like health and the planet.

“Not only does cycling have many benefits on our health but I think it will aide in teaching my children the importance of making the planet a better and safer place with lesser use of motor vehicles,” Cecillia says.

She says by choosing to cycle it means they’re able to explore the hidden gems of Wainuiomata that they may

have missed if they had been driving, not to mention what they’re saving on petrol.

“I think it is important for families especially for the kids to ride and walk to school where they can learn the importance of road safety, such as cars, pedestrians and reading road signs,” Cecillia says.

Since they began, the rewarding part of the change has been the opportunity Cecillia has had to bond with her children.

“Its teaches them to have confidence, have courage and shows them that exercise can be fun,” Cecillia says.

“It gives them a sense of independence too and encourages them to be more active and not rely on transportation all the time,” Cecillia and her girls hope to continue the family goal throughout the year no matter the weather.

Noelani, Elizabeth and Hana Logologo have made the decision to bike to school with mum Cecillia Visan-Logologo as part of active and healthy lifestyle..

Students learn about wellness

Students at Wainuiomata Intermediate School played Ki O Rahi and learnt about health as part of their Wellness Week last week.

Having a week that focused

on moving the body was all about promoting health to the students.

By giving students the chance to try new wellness practices like meditation, yoga, sports games and healthy breakfasts, meant they could experience

new things.

Early in the week the inter school athletics competition was held at Newtown park where six students successfully made it onto regionals.

Keeping the competitveness up, on the Thursday all 11

classes got the chance to compete against each other at Ki O Rahi.

A wellness exhibition was held Monday morning and a school picnic on the grass on Friday celebrated the end of the week.

Everybody needs good neighbours Tenants have registered about 50 Neighbours Day events ranging from such things as movie nights to street parties, barbecues, gardening activities, clean ups, sharing a cup of tea and pot luck meals.

Community Development Manager Karen Allen says Housing New Zealand staff members are supporting local events across the country.

“We’ve taken a more tenant-led approach to Neighbours Day this year because we want tenants to feel empowered to be actively involved in the event planning.”

Getting to know your neighbours is an important part of building safer, more connected communities, Karen says.

“It fosters a sense of wellbeing, helps people feel that they belong and reduces loneliness.

“If you know your neighbour, you feel more comfortable having a chat over the fence or in the stairwell.

“That way you are also more likely to go to them if you need a hand with something “Housing New Zealand has been involved in Neighbours Day activities for several years.

“This year we are excited to be increasing our support by

The iconic New Zealand TV show, ‘What Now’ made themselves at home at Wainuiomata Primary School on Sunday for an epic live show.

It was a great turn-out with many locals buzzing for the chance to see themselves on television and be a part of the What Now starting again for the year.

There was plenty of entertainment for

everyone and even some lucky youngsters were chosen from the crowd to play a game with the hosts Erin, Chris and Evander.

The What Now team made sure there was plenty to squeal about from foam to slime to six-legged races and performances from local students.

Some were even lucky enough to get slimed on screen.

In fact, everyone got a good dose of slime at the end!

Help restore biodiversity Keen to help in restoring regional biodiversity? Here’s your opportunity.

Greater Wellington is looking for people with a strong interest in how we manage biodiversity, who have good links to their wider community and who can work with others in a collaborative setting.

The continuing national trend towards biodiversity decline, seen in disappearing habitats, rising numbers of threatened species and compromised fresh and coastal water poses a massive challenge to New Zealand to which the greater Wellington region is not immune.

Forest cover across the region has fallen from 98 per cent of cover to just 28 per cent since human arrival and only less than three per cent of its wetlands remain.

Pest animals and plants continue to undermine the quality of what’s left and many native species struggle to survive.

“Stabilising and ultimately reversing the damage done to our environment is at the heart of what we do at Greater Wellington, but realistically the whole of our community must get involved if we are to turn things around,” says Greater Wellington General Manager, Catchment, Wayne O’Donnell.

Greater Wellington Regional Council is therefore looking for people with experience in environmental improvement to help develop and drive a biodiversity framework aimed at restoring thriving ecosystems and biodiversity.

“We’re looking to bring together interested and active parties within the Wellington region to better coordinate

our efforts and achieve measurable gains for biodiversity conservation.

“No single agency or group can do the job. So we are working towards establishing a Collaborative Working Group to develop a Regional Biodiversity Framework that would be a partnership between Greater Wellington, mana whenua, the Department of Conservation, local authorities, the wider community and many other groups and organisations.

“Working together in a collaborative regional framework is likely to give us a better chance of developing a shared vision for biodiversity management, a greater awareness of the need for more action and a better, more coordinated response to reversing decades of environmental degradation,” says Wayne.

The project was started by Greater Wellington in partnership with mana whenua and the Department of Conservation last year.

The call for volunteers for the Collaborative Working Group follows a series of workshops held on the subject, where the idea of a Regional Biodiversity Framework was discussed with biodiversity stakeholders and interested members of the public.

The group will draw together the views of our region’s biodiversity community to develop the Framework.

Greater Wellington will facilitate and support the group and sit on it as a member. The group, independently co-chaired in partnership with mana whenua, will drive the project forward.

Free football event on Friday

In conjunction with Love Wainuiomata, the Wainuiomata Football Club will be holding a free community event this Friday, March 29 from 5pm to 7pm in the Queen St Reserve.

The Little Kickers will be in action plus some demos by the Football Club and their UK imports.

What’s better is that there will be some chances to win prizes draws, a lolly scramble, and a bouncy castle.

It’s a great opportunity to get involved with the local sports club and have a kick around with real players.

Open to both primary and secondary students, it’s a fun activity to finish off the week, according to organiser Esther King.

“Having it at the Queen St reserve means it is easy to just head over the road for a kick while you’re waiting for your Friday takeaways,” Esther says.

The idea behind the free event is getting the community and the local sports groups more intertwined together, according to Esther.

Great turn out for Kindergarten play day

It was a big day for children and their families at the Wainuiomata Hall last week for a free play day run by combined kindergartens in Wainuiomata.

It was a great turn out with about 74 families attending the event, according to an organiser, Melissa Zgomba.

“It was a really successful day,” Melissa says.

The five local kindergartens came together to show the community what kindergartens are all about.

“We wanted to educate families on what Kindergarten is and share it with families,” Melissa says.

It was a wonderland with eve-

rything from toys to Play-Doh for the youngsters to play with.

There was even something for the adults with free coffee and snacks provided by the local Countdown in support.

“It was incredible and we were just blown away by the level of interest.

“It’s something we’ll look at doing again,” Melissa says.

It was like an explosion of colour at Trafalgar park in Lower Hutt for the Family Colour Fun Walk on Sunday.

“It was a lot of fun and there was a great turn out,” an organiser says.

The event was run by Hutt City Kindergartens as a way to get children and families together for a fun day on the weekend.

Participants strolled around a marked out course where pre-purchased powdered paint was thrown at everyone.

The brightest and most colourful results were for those who were brave enough to

wear all white.

For those that would rather not get covered in colour, there was plenty of opportunities to kick back and watch the action from the comfort of their picnic rugs.

“It was an opportunity to bring our community together for a few hours of fun, with the chance to participate in some really cool, low cost activities that will help raise some funds for Waiwhetu and Waterloo Kindergartens,” organisers say.

Compared to the previous two years, this year’s Colour Walk was the largest crowd they’ve had, according to organisers.

The Warriors rollercoaster rides again in 2019 The New Zealand Warriors could be a fun team to watch in this year’s NRL, as long as your expectations are minimal.

The Warriors in 2019 will be like that unexpected bunch of flowers or chocolates after a rough day, rather than that brand new bike you’d plead for at Christmas.

If your expectations are low, I think you’ll enjoy the season and the team may squeak into the top eight playoffs.

The first two weeks have laid the potential blueprint for the Auckland club.

A confidence building 40-6 win over the Canterbury Bulldogs in week one was followed by a

deflating 34-6 defeat to the Wests Tigers on Sunday night.

That’s the rollercoaster you’re on as a fan this year.

I am not a Warriors fan, I lost the faith in 2007 and my blood pressure, heart-rate and swear jar have been eternally grateful ever since.

When million-dollar man Shaun

Johnson left for Cronulla late in the pre-season, many would have expected the Warriors to be a skydive to the bottom of the table.

It doesn’t look quite that dire.

The club has always struggled away from their Mt Smart Stadium base and to have any chance of making the playoffs, it will need to be rectified.

The enigmatic Warriors don’t have the flair or x-factor of past years.

They’ll have to do the basics well week-in and week-out.

To achieve that, they’ll need to be a new breed which shuns their past.

It won’t be easy, it may not be possible.

Lovely weekend for tennis Cam comes to Wainui

Cam Shorney has come all the way from Bristol, United Kingdom, to Wainuiomata to play for the local premier football team.

The 21-year-old has been playing the game his whole life and is very excited to be playing the game in New Zealand.

So far Cam’s finding the city to be very enjoyable, he says.

“It’s completely different to back home.

“Everyone is very happy and chill here,” Cam says.

Since moving over to the country a little over six weeks ago, Cam and his fellow teammates have had the opportunity to explore some of the beaches and area surrounding Wainui when they’re

not training.

Up until coming to New Zealand, Can has mainly played for teams in the United Kingdom.

Cam played for Bath City for a short period and played at a premier level on his home turf for the Keynsham Football Club for four years.

Cam and the team train twice a week at Richard Prouse Park and are set to be training the next generation of players.

In the near future, the new recruits will also be going into the schools to teach primary aged students too.

The first game of the season is kicking off on March 30 at Richard Prouse Park against Upper Hutt City Football Team at 2.30pm.

Wainuiomata Tennis Club will be running Club Champs through March and April.

The Junior Club Champs are being played on Tuesday afternoon with most children entering and practicing the tennis skills they

have learnt during the season.

Over the weekend was the Senior Mixed Doubles Competition which was lucky to have perfect weather for tennis.

Cameron Paulik Runners-up: Elesha Smith & Adam Smith.

Plate Winners: Tracey McEwan & Ryan Commane. Runners up: Shelley Matheson & Ray Short.

Wainuiomata Rugby Club v Hutt Old Boys Marist

It was a big first game of the Swindale Sheild season for Wainuiomata Rugby club at William Jones Park, with Hutt Old Boys Marist coming out on top with 36 to Wainui’s 19 points.

However, Coach Dan Smith is hopeful about the coming of the season.

“It blew a few cobwebs out so we know what we need to work on,” Dan says.

The club is set to play Petone Rugby Club this week.
