A moment’s silence Councillor Keri Brown and her family, son Jackson and partner Kristen Whiu, were up at dawn on Saturday morning, April 25, to take a moment’s silence for our fallen Anzacs. Kristen streamed the service through his speakers so that everyone in the area could hear it. “We had people all around us out.,” Keri says. “And we could hear someone playing the Last Post on their trumpet. Was very moving.” Due to the Level 4 restrictions as a result of COVID-19 the traditional Anzac Day services were cancelled. Instead people were encouraged to create their own displays and rise at dawn to take a moment, whether that be outside or inside their homes.

Charlie pays tribute to Anzacs Young Charlie Ngaheke from St Claudine Thevenet School has created the ultimate Anzac Day display, made with the help of his mum Haylee and grandad Barrie Casley. Charlie painted a large sign and made white crosses with his grandad which he hammered into the ground outside their home. Together they also created poppies out of recycled fizzy
drink bottles. Cutting the bottom of to create the flower-like shapes. All together they made around 20 poppies. “We even put a spotlight on it so it could be seen at night,” Haylee says. Like many other students around Wainuiomata, he created the display as part of a competition and project for school. But mum Haylee says it is not just about the creating of
Acting Hutt Valley area commander for the Police, Dean Silvester, says that Wainuiomata has done a good job at keeping to the Level 4 restrictions over the last four weeks. "We’ve seen, by and large, a good level of compliance in Wainuiomata, with only a few people issued verbal or written warnings," he says. "We urge everyone to keep up the good
work as we move into Alert Level 3." Level 3 came into effect on Monday night at 11.59pm. The newest level is now opening up the countries economy once more and allowing people to order food but only in takeaway capacity. "Nationally, we’ve seen a decrease in crime across areas such as road policing, theft, burglary and assault so that will be very similar at a local level.

Anushka writes to Jacinda By Megan Connolly
Year 8 student at St Claudine Thevenet School, Anushka Kumar, has written a letter to none other than the Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern. Tasked with penning a shout out for someone for a school assignment, Anushka’s first
thought went to Jacinda. “Jacinda is a leader that is really standing the test of time,” Anushka says. “She never leaves things to the last minute, she’s always prepared and organised. “I just wrote how I felt about her.” The youngster says she is in-
spired by the Prime Ministers hard work since she started serving in 2017. “She has inspired a lot of student and teenagers to be interested in politics. “When I was younger I wanted to grow up to be a Prime Minister because I want to help people. “Now that I’m older, I want to
help others not just myself. “I might become a doctor.” Although Anushka hasn’t sent the letter to Jacinda yet, she is hoping that her teacher will send it for her and hopes to hear back. “I hope I get to meet her. “I’d just give her a hug and praise her for all her hard work,” Anushka says.

inbrief news Educators need priority for seasonal flu jabs Now that more than 500,000 vulnerable Kiwis and key healthcare workers have received the seasonal flu vaccine, NZEI Te Riu Roa says a priority vaccination programme needs to be set up for educators returning to classrooms and early education services. NZEI Te Riu Roa president Liam Rutherford says the small bubbles in schools and centres under Level 3 could be expanded to include most staff and children in as little as two weeks when the move to Level 2 is made. “It makes sense to protect all teachers and support staff - and their students and tamariki - from seasonal flu. Even with careful social distancing and strict school bubbles, they will have some of the closest and most prolonged contacts of any workers,” says Liam. “Any outbreak of respiratory illness in a school or centre would cause a lot of alarm and disruption until Covid-19 could be ruled out. “So as our educators move to the front line in the reopening of Aotearoa, we’re calling on the Government to vaccinate teachers and support staff as a priority.”
Waiu Park opens Waiu Park Biking Park opened yesterday when lockdown ticked over from Level 4 to Level 3. This means the signs will be removed, the car park will be open, but the water fountain, bike wash station and the toilets will remain closed. Although exercise and recreation is an important part of maintaining our health and wellbeing. However, Mountain Biking also presents a high risk of injury. Stay safe and physically distance yourself from people outside of your bubble. If you are an experienced mountain biker, use trails you know, or have some fun on the easy ones. “Now is not the time to take up new activities, or expose yourself or your bubble to any risk. Use your common sense – stay local, stay safe and be kind,” a spokesperson says.

Predator free group keeping up with pests By Megan Connolly
Wainuiomata Predator Free group has been working hard for the past protecting local wildlife by setting traps in surrounding forest. Organiser Steven Fraser says they are “The good news part of what we do is protecting and enhancing our local native animals,” he says. “They seem to have been enjoying the lack of people during the lockdown. There seem to be lots of Piwakawaka (Fantails) about in particular as well as quite a few North Island Tomtits. “ Prior to level 4 lockdown, locals were reported observing many large rats in broad daylight in places they hadn’t been before, but there wasn’t any luck in catching them. “It seems this was due to the ‘Mega Mast’ last Spring when native forests produce lots of fruit,” he says. “Initially this creates a huge explosion of life including native birds and predators like rats. Once the abundant food is gone, the rats turn on native fauna.” Since the group became officially active last year, they have had many locals setting up traps in their backyard.

“People now seem to be catching rats in their backyard traps as the weather turns cold and apparently the abundant food In the forests has disappeared.” Alongside the traps, the action group put out ‘chew cards’ in a number of the parks around the area
‘Chew cards’ are small pieces of corflute sign infused with peanut butter. These are then collected a week later for signs of chewing by rodents. They were placements were focused around the Hine Road and Richard Prouse Park area and around Parkway and Fernlea area.
“There were some signs of rats - typically near creeks.” The group cannot deliver traps during Levels 3 or 4. However they should be able to resume doing so under Level 2 provided people pay by using direct credit, $15 for a T-Rex rat trap and box, Steven says.

Rock paintings spread joy Hidden amongst the bushes and crevices of Wainuiomata, you are likely to find a secret and colourful painted rock or two. Rock painting has become a national interest over recent years as whanau paint messages and, when found by someone else, hide them somewhere else, continuing the tradition. Skye Penaia and a group of people spanning the Wellington region are responsible for painting quaint rocks and hiding them around nature walks. "They usually go in bush walks and in parks. Most people tag on the back to post on Wellington Rock's Facebook or Rocks NZ and then rehide them," Skye says. "We've found quite a few in Wanui's Gum Loop track. "You've just gotta keep your eyes peeled!" Wainuiomata rock painters were beginning to meet prior to the enforced level 4 lockdown at the end of March. Now they meet over the video chat app Zoom every Friday and paint together at home. The group joins up with friends in Auckland. "We are connecting to a church called The Render Gathering which operates in South Auckland and will launch in Wanuiomata this year." The reason they continue to work on this project is simple, Skye says. It is kindness.

The rock painting group made up of people from all over Wellington, including Wainuiomata, have been hard at work over lockdown painting and preparing rocks to hide once contact restrictions are lifted. Photos supplied. Skye Penaia spends lockdown painting rocks in a variety of styles.
"We do this project because it's an amazing way to spread kindness. You never know who will find your rock and what it will mean to them.
It's nice to be able to spread joy to a stranger." To paint rocks and spread joy can be done by everyone of all ages, she adds. "I think that everyone benefits
from this activity. "Kids absolutely love it and it also promotes physical activity, creativity and sharing because they learn they need to rehide for others to enjoy.
"Adults also get a lot out of creativity and physical activity too." Keep an eye out for when The Rocks are Gathering group are planning their next weekend meet up.

sports talk With Jacob Page
Aussie rugby’s Castle crumbling Raelene Castle is no mug and she is no pushover. Her long, drawn out exit as the boss of rugby in Australia shows how dysfunctional the sport is across the Tasman and is not a reflection on Castle’s ability to lead. The 48-year-old former Netball New Zealand and the NRL’s Canterbury Bulldogs chief
executive is not afraid of a challenge but speculation of bullying and the Aussie rugby brass wanting her out finally wore her down it would seem. She is too easy of a scape goat for Australia’s rugby problems. For a bunch of former Wallabies’ captains to sign a letter against Castle is an absolute cop out.
It’s a move of desperation like an angry talkback caller that rings to vent about what they do not like without offering any solutions. The investment in grassroots rugby in Australia has diminished immensely over the past decade and it shows. It’s been 18 years since John Eales kicked that injury time
penalty at the Cake Tin to retain the Bledisloe Cup for the last time. Australia needs solutions, hard analysis on what is going wrong and how they can stop their ship from sinking. Rumours of Phil Kearns taking over are certainly a potential positive for the commentary booth considering his biased
in-match analysis has been a hard listen for many years but could he have some of the answers? Hopefully this is rock bottom, I fear it is not but when Australian rugby is strong, we, as New Zealand rugby tragics are forced to lift our game. That’s a positive for everyone.
Callum receives cricket award By Megan Connolly
Local cricket club captain Callum Mackaness has recently been awarded the Mike Curtis Cup from Cricket Wellington for his contribution to the community. Last season was Callum’s first year as club captain so receiving this award was unexpected, he says. “I knew I was nominated but I forgot, so receiving the news was a surprise,” Callum says. “It is nice to be acknowledged and for Wainuiomata to be noticed by Cricket Wellington.
“Thank you to Justin Morgan for nominating me.” The 23-year-old has been a part of the local club since he was 12 years old. In that time he has moved up the grades, played for Petone Cricket Club and then in Scotland for the last two seasons. “The whole goal was to come back to the club and play with my mates and try and push up the grades,” he says. The club was only two games away from playing in the final before the country moved into the lockdown period due to COVID-19.
However, this year, they did finish the season ‘top of the table’, he says. They were also recently promoted to the premier reserve grade. “I am really happy for the club. There are a lot of good players who don’t get the recognition they deserve.” Callum’s favourite part of his role at the club is that he loves seeing achievement in general, whether it is personally or with the club. “Especially so this season, as we’ve training really hard.” Callum Mackaness the Wainuiomata Club Captain was recently awarded the Mike Curits Cup from Wellington Cricket for his contribution to the club.
Free Ambulance reminds available 111 for medical emergencies Wellington Free Ambulance is reminding their community to continue to call 111 if you are experiencing a medical emergency and to let them know if you or anyone in your household is experiencing flu-like symptoms. “Look after us, so we can look after you,” Wellington Free Ambulance Chief Executive Mike Grant says. It’s important we continue to keep ourselves, each other and our community safe. “Seek medical care early, don’t leave it until you feel really sick. GPs are offering consultations over the phone and pharmacies are still open. "Please don’t be worried
about calling 111 for help if you or anyone you know needs it. We’ll work with you to ensure the best care, in the best way, and will take ever y precaution to ensure to you stay safe from viruses such as COVID-19,” Mike says. Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic teams are well prepared to respond safely and appropriately. When you call 111 they’ll ask additional questions about recent flulike symptoms for you or anyone in your household. A Clinical Paramedic Advisor might call you back to discuss what’s happening for you. Please be honest and let
them know how you are feeling, whether you’ve been in contact with someone who has COVID-19 or if you yourself have had COVID-19 and since recovered. When paramedics arrive they might already be wearing face masks and eye protection. They will assess you from a two-metre distance and ask about flu-like symptoms for you or anyone in your household. They may ask you to put on a surgical mask. Depending on your symptoms they will determine what level of personal protective equipment they need, so please be truthful even if it was a recent cold or sore throat.
Art thrives in other ways during crisis Arts and events have been severely affected by the Covid-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown, but many have adapted by virtually opening doors to old audiences and new. With venues, galleries, and museums closed during the lockdown, a whole new world has opened up for people to enjoy from their living room – and artists, performers and event organisers have found a captive audience with innovative, interesting and entertaining ways. The Royal New Zealand Ballet are doing Live In Your Living Room shows, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is streaming online performances in the Play Our Part series, and Wellington City Council is supporting and funding creative and cultural activities in the capital too, says Arts, events and culture portfolio lead, Councillor Nicola Young. “Arts is in the middle of adversity, literally and meta-
phorically," says Mayor of Wellington Andy Foster. “Everyone has had to adapt to the Alert Level 4 lockdown, and the arts and events communities are proving their creativity has no bounds and will continue to perform and provide entertainment in the new realms of Level 3. “The situation has also introduced older audiences to new technology, and younger people to arts that have traditionally been popular with more mature members of our society and hopefully that will continue in the future.” Museums and galleries are doing virtual tours and talks, there are Spotify lists of local music content, #LoveLocal campaigns, and platforms where everyone can share ideas, resources, responses, strategies and experiences as the creative community work together through Covid-19. Find out more in our arts and funding sections of the Wellington City Council website.
