This series of Public Lectures is a wonderful example of the University’s values, as we seek to demonstrate the importance and strength of local partnership in our areas of teaching and research at the Warrington Campus – Policing, Health & Social Care, Education, Business and Sport. We are delighted to be hosting a selection of distinguished and notable industry speakers from both the public and private sector, as we explore regional approaches to organised crime, the mental health of young men, the magic weaving business of teaching and education, building a £50bn economy in Cheshire and Warrington and the social and community impact of Warrington Wolves Rugby Club. Detective Superintendent Jason Hudson is the Head of Operations for TITAN –North West Regional Organised Crime Unit. The unit’s mission is to tackle criminals having the greatest impact on communities of the North West. The unit is a collaborative multi agency team represented by Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and Greater Manchester Police Forces as well as embedded partners from the National Crime Agency, HMRC, Police Scotland and the Crown Prosecution Service. Since 2009 the unit has arrested over 530 organised criminals who have been sentenced to over 2000 years imprisonment. They have seized over £63 million of controlled drugs and 59 firearms. Jason is a Cumbrian officer with 29 years Police Service with the vast majority of this spent dealing with serious and organised criminals. COLONEL ALAN FINNEGAN, ROYAL CENTRE FOR DEFENCE MEDICINE: SUPPORTING YOUNG MEN WITH DEPRESSION

SIR JOHN JONES, JFJ TRAINING LTD: THE MAGIC WEAVING BUSINESS

Colonel Alan Finnegan PhD RN FRCN L/ QARANC was commissioned into the British Army in 1987. His clinical background is in Mental Health. He has deployed to Iraq, the Balkans, Northern Ireland, South Africa and Afghanistan. He has served as a Nurse Consultant in Military Mental Health and as the Ministry of Defence (MoD) Specialist Nursing Advisor in Mental Health. He is currently serving as the UK Ministry of Defence Professor of Nursing. He was pivotal to the establishment of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Defence Forum, and then served as Chairman of the Forum from 2004 until 2011. He is a committee member of the RCN International Committee and Chairman of the British Army Nursing Research Professoriate. Alan is a Visiting Professor at the University of Chester and the University of South Florida. Sir John is one of a small, select band of educational professionals who have not only had their achievements recognised in the New Year’s Honours List (2003), but have been able to help and inspire others with their knowledge and passion. One of the most entertaining, inspiring and sought-after speakers on the global educational stage, his achievements and reputation for straighttalking, leadership and creativity have led him to be invited on to a number of panels and thinktanks. When Headteacher of three secondary schools over a period of 17 years, he was asked to join the Government’s Policy Action Team for Neighbourhood Renewal at the Social Exclusion Unit. He was also a member of the Headteachers’ National Focus Group on Truancy and Exclusion and the Excellence in Cities Project at the DfES. Sir John was part of the National Remodelling Team and the Leadership and Development Unit sponsored by the National College for School Leadership. Working part-time at the Centre for Educational Leadership at Manchester University, he presented on a range of programmes as well as designing and delivering a Master’s Course at Liverpool University focused on the leadership of change. A Non-Executive Director on the board of Aintree Hospitals Trust, he was also a Governor of two schools on Merseyside. Sir John has written two books; ‘Truancy and exclusion: a teacher’s guide’ and the best-selling ‘The Magic-Weaving Business’ and has coauthored ‘Winning the H Factor: the secrets of happy schools’. PHILIP COX, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, CHESHIRE & WARRINGTON LOCAL ENTERPRISE PARTNERSHIP: BUILDING A £50BN ECONOMY Philip joined Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership in July 2014. His role is to lead the LEP towards its objective of making Cheshire and Warrington a £50 billion economy by 2040 – more than twice its current size. This role includes overseeing the delivery of the LEP’s programme of £150m of infrastructure and other capital projects, its £¼ billion European Structural Funds programme, and the Cwheshire Science Corridor Enterprise Zone, which was announced by the Chancellor in the November 2015 Autumn Statement.

Prior to joining Cheshire and Warrington, Philip was a Civil Servant, most recently as the Director for Local Economies at DCLG. His background is as an Economist and his Civil Service career has included serving as the Principal Private Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minster and working on issues such as the sale of the Millennium Dome to create the O2 Arena, renegotiation of the contract to build the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (now HS1), the establishment of Enterprise Zones and overall responsibility for the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in England.

ROGER DRAPER, PROFESSOR STEVEN BROOMHEAD, NEIL KELLY AND TONY SMITH: THE SOCIAL & COMMUNITY IMPACT OF WARRINGTON WOLVES Roger Draper is Chief Executive of Warrington Wolves. He is one of the new breed of sports leaders who are applying direct experience of competing as an athlete and first rate business skills and experience to achieve radical improvement in the way sport is run. Over the past 20 years he has been involved in all aspects of the transformation of British sport, putting

in place practical and widely acclaimed strategies, modernising organisations, engineering the joining up of all aspects of sport and securing new commercial backing. He is now leading a more informed approach to sports business management ensuring that Warrington Wolves are one of the leading Rugby League Clubs in the world. He has wide experience in the business of sport, this has included 4 years as Chief Executive at Sport England, leading a major review and reorganisation of the 500m spent on sport in the UK, involvement in the London 2012 bid and he was Accounting Officer for the completion of the Wembley National Stadium project. He then spent 7 years as CEO of the Lawn Tennis Association where he completed a ground breaking £25m commercial partner deal with Aegon and grew the turnover of the business by 45% to £65m. He left the LTA in September 2013, two months after Andy Murray ended Britain’s 77 year wait for a male champion. He became Chief Executive of Warrington Wolves in March 2015. Steven is the Chief Executive at Warrington Borough Council. He was also the Council Chief Executive from 1997 to 2003. Professor Steven Broomhead held the Chair of Entrepreneurial Education at Liverpool Hope University. In May 2011 he gave his inaugural professorial lecture “Making Britain enterprising, entrepreneurial, forward wealth creating again – restoring faith to the centre stage”. In 2007 the University of Chester named their new library the ‘Broomhead Library’. From 2003 to 2011 he was Chief Executive of the North West Development Agency. Steven is the Non-Executive Chairman of Warrington Wolves Rugby Super League Football Club since 2009. The Wolves won the Challenge Cup in 2009 and 2010 and were Super League Winners in 2011 and finalists in 2012. He is also a trustee of the National Football Museum. He is also NonExecutive Chairman of Recycling Lives a charity based in Lancashire. Prior to working in local government Steven was principal of 2 colleges (Durham and Warrington). Neil Kelly is Director of the Warrington Wolves Foundation. Tony Smith is Head of Coaching and Rugby at the Club.
