2017 Year 2 Semester 2 Master of Architecture Design Studio: Thesis Project Brief The project is set in the old town of Jakarta, where it once functioned as headquarters during the Dutch colonial period. Surrounding buildings are mainly of colonial architectural style. The brief requires design of a mixed-used building combining two key programs: market and community centre. Hence, the challenge is to define the role of contemporary architeceture in a historic urban setting and how it mediates a meaningful encounter with the surroundings. Project Description The project aims to target the urban poor community in Jakarta, including the street vendors and street artists who are currently being evicted and displaced due to gentrification. The project intention is to create a familiar platform which the urban poor can relate to through adoption of the kampung characteristics. The kampung nature is important for the urban poor as it is the kampung spatial qualities that they are used to work and live within and difficult to forget despite being removed due to forced eviction. Through architecture, it is hope that the familiar spatial quality (flexibility and informality) will be able to provide a platform for the urban poor to comfortably showcase their skills and contribution to the urban society. Being located within the context of the site as a major tourist attraction spot, it also helps to increase recognition of their contribution which are currently being overlooked.

2017 Year 2 Semester 1 Master of Architecture Design Studio: E Project Brief Located on the corner of Clark and Graham Street in Port Melbourne, the studio brief requires the design of a house for an extended family and their pet dog, taking into account of the client’s needs and daily routine. Project Description Driven by Barbara (client) and her family’s need for transparency and openness among family members, yet still accommodating for the needs of each family members, the project aims to achieve a balance between interaction and privacy, both within and with-out the house. Firstly, introduction of an atrium over the kitchen, housing circulation spaces intersected with public spaces dedicated for each family members, creates an open environment that allows for spatial, visual and audio interaction while still being able to enjoy their own activities. The atrium also splits the house into two, creating refuge from publicity at the atrium at both ends of the house, when needed. Privacy from guests are also maintained by the interconnectedness of public spaces, from the entrance through public atrium to the top floor. Hence, as the title depicts, the project intends to weave the relationship of family members and friends under the same roof, through a balance of prospect and refuge.

THE APERTURE 2017 Year 1 Semester 2 Master of Architecture Design Studio: D Project Brief Set in the city of Lisbon, the project brief requires design of a building to house 60 different programs, housing Lisbon’s creative makers involved in local arts and crafts. Through research of the city’s local culture and characteristics, we are to define our own program and brief. Project Description Lisbon, being known as the city of seven hills, has an undulating hilly landscape. Due to this hilly landscape, it resulted in the formation of viewing platforms offering stunning views back to the cityscape. These viewing platforms, known as miradouro, eventually turn into spots to gather and enjoyment of the stunning views of Lisbon’s roofscape. Hence, this project adopts the feature of miradouro as the design driving force. The building is composed of various openings and platforms located at different heights, which are angled to capture and frame the essence of Lisbon. The openings are located at varying height, imitating the hilly landscape of Lisbon, to frame different amount of details. These platforms also function similarly to the miradouros, where they act as shared space for the creative makers to meet and gather.

2017 Year 1 Semester 1 Master of Architecture Design Studio: C Project Brief The site is located in Carlton, at the fringe of Melbourne CBD. The studio brief requires design of a residential typology to attract family from the suburb to live in the city. With increasing downsizers, the studio challenge the design of a multi-residential apartment block (taking into account of the adaptability of the apartment units as family size changes over the period of ownership).
Project Description In order to attract families from the suburb, the apartment block is designed with incorporation of features commonly found in suburban houses, including: private outdoor space for individual dwelling and interaction/ shared space for families which will create the overall experience of engagement with surrounding activities, instead of being completely privatised in typical apartments in the city. Alternate stacking of individual apartment unit module result in different void spaces, ranging from single, double to triple storey. These void spaces are turned into shared facility space for apartment users, which not only encourage interaction among neighbours but also increasing the sensual experience as one journey back to their own apartment unit. Apartment units are also designed for adaptability. It is spread across two floors with separate entrances, allowing for the top floor to be rented out when not in used. As a family, the double height space encourages interaction between both floors. Alternatively, if it is a nester or a couple residing within, the void space can be converted into a kitchen for upper floor usage.

Wangaratta Festival
Junipalooza is a celebration of all things gin, with dozens of makers in one room, sharing their enthusiasm and know-how of the drink. It started three years ago in London and was met positively by gin enthusiasts. Not only will they be serving local gins, but will also bring a whole host of European ginsmiths, each keen to share their passion and knowledge of the drink. This will be the second year for Junipalooza Melbourne as they will team up with the renowned Gin Queen herself, Caroline Chiderley, as your special host for the evening.
Conceived by a group of locals in 1989 as a way to attract visitors and raise profile of the town, the first Wangaratta Festival of Jazz was staged in 1990, with attendances of 2500. With a diverse mix of jazz greats and rising stars. It has then grown to become an internationally renowned event, attracting around 25,000 visitors. The festival has won various tourism awards and is recognised as the leading jazz event in Australia.

Method
1. Roughly chop cauliflower florets and stem. Using a food processor, process for 30 seconds or until very finely chopped. Add salt. Process for a further 5 seconds to combine. Transfer to a fine sieve set over a bowl. Stand for 20 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 160C/140C fan-forced. Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper. 3. Using the back of a spoon, press cauliflower to remove excess moisture. Blend baking powder with oil in a large bowl. Add the egg, parmesan, rosemary, flour and cauliflower. Mix well to combine. Spread 2 tablespoons of mixture onto 1 prepared tray to make a 7cm x 15cm rectangle. Repeat with remaining mixture to form 5 rectangles on each tray. 4. Bake for 45 minutes or until browned and crisp. Stand on trays for 2 minutes. Transfer crackers to a wire rack to cool completely. Cut roughly into pieces. Serve with dips and assorted vegetables.
