Big Tex Big Tex, who holds a share of the bareback riding world record and the Wrangler NFR arena record, had surgery April 12 at Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine after a bout of colic. Doctors expect Big Tex to recover completely, but say he will be sidelined for four to six months. The Pete Carr’s Classic Pro Rodeo horse, which was scheduled to perform during the final round at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo, received life-saving treatment at the Lazy E Arena from Dr. Grace Richter of Oakridge Equine Hospital, and the surgery was performed at OSU by Dr. Chase Whitfield. He corrected a displacement of the colon between the spleen and the kidney. Big Tex earned a share of the world record in 2010 - the year he was voted PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year when he took Tilden Hooper to a 94-point score in Silver City, N.M. Bobby Mote’s 91.5-point ride on Big Tex in the fifth round of the 2008 WNFR tied the arena record.
Top Hand Award Dr. Wayne Merhoff, D.V.M., was presented the Top Hand Award on April 12, the highest honor given to volunteers by the Red Bluff Round-Up. Dr. Merhoff, who owned the Red Bluff Veterinary Clinic, has been the Round-Up’s veterinarian since 1977, providing care and services to stock contractors’ and contestants’ horses, bulls and cattle every year since then. “I enjoyed working with the guys who put on the Round-Up, and enjoyed working with the large animals,” Dr. Merhoff told the Red Bluff Daily News. “There’s a strong camaraderie with the guys who are volunteers.” The Top Hand Award is given out annually
to a volunteer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty, giving his or her time and talents to the rodeo.
Reno Rodeo Celebration The 2014 Reno (Nev.) Rodeo will celebrate its 95th year in June and 56 of those years have included the production assistance of ProRodeo Hall of Fame stock contractor Cotton Rosser and Flying U Rodeo. Guests and celebrities at the April 16 Reno Rodeo Legacy Dinner, including PRCA Commissioner Karl Stressman, paid tribute to Rosser’s legacy in front of a sold-out audience at the Livestock Events Center. The Reno Rodeo has commissioned Buckeye Blake, a renowned local artist, to create a bronze statue of Rosser to be placed on the rodeo grounds. Funds raised from the dinner will assist in developing a Reno Rodeo Museum, and officials estimated they had raised nearly $100,000.
Neal Gay Cowboy Reunion Neal Gay, who co-founded the Mesquite (Texas) Championship Rodeo with Jim Shoulders in 1958, will be the guest of honor and host the “Neal Gay Cowboy Reunion” at the Mesquite Arena, June 27-28. Cowboys, cowgirls, bullfighters, specialty acts, barrelmen, stock contractors and PRCA members are all invited guests for the weekend. The June 28 tribute evening includes a cocktail reception, famous Mesquite Bar-B-Q dinner and VIP rodeo seating. The price is $28 in advance and $35 after June 25. The rodeo features Stace Smith ProRodeo livestock, barrelman Jim Bob Feller and specialty act Tomas Garcilazo. Three-time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Monty “Hawkeye” Henson will provide the musical entertainment. To reserve tickets and dinner

Bach Roping Four-time World Champion Team Roper Allen Bach has changed the name of his instructional program from Smart Roping to Bach Roping and has launched a new website at www.BachRoping.com to give the new branding a higher profile. The site has information about his roping clinics and the training center in Boyd, Texas, along with free instructional videos featuring him and fellow World Champions Jade Corkill and Clay Tryan.
Day of the Cowboy The Florida House of Representatives is the latest state to pass a resolution to declare July 26 as the Day of the Cowboy, noting that the Sunshine State has the oldest cattle ranching tradition in the nation, dating back to Ponce de Leon’s second voyage there in 1521.
Performance Horse Sale The Champions Select Performance Horse Sale will take place May 12 on www.TheBreed ersConnection.com, and will feature horses from many of the biggest names to compete in professional rodeo. The consigners include world champions Paul Tierney, Clay O’Brien Cooper, Jake Barnes, Rope Meyers and Jhett Johnson, along with Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers Beau Franzen, Bill Parker, Kyle Lockett, Cody Cowden and Jess Tierney, a three-time qualifier to the National Finals Steer Roping. ecently I was asked to speak to the Bloomer National High School rodeo team. Randy Bloomer and his family do a great job of supporting youth in rodeo. They bring these kids, and their families, to Salado for several days. There they are taught a number of things to help prepare them for the next step in their rodeo career. While CR many of them may not become professional rodeo athletes, most will at least go to college and compete at the collegiate level.

These kids are given some media training and a chance to listen to and ask questions of professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls. Jennifer also gave them mock interviews. Randy prepares them for the next step and are taught what’s expected of them. This type of investment in our youth makes me proud to VSA IN HOUSE PROOF be on the Bloomer team and call CRX’D them a sponsor. Regardless of where these kids go after high school, it’s important to never stop being a student. We are all exposed to wise people with life
experience and how often do we take time to take notes. You think, ‘I’ll remember this conversation.’ If you remember 10% of what you hear you will be lucky. Think about this: If I were to give you the winning lottery numbers…. Would you take a chance of remembering them? Or would you scratch the numbers in your skin with a knife if necessary to be sure you had the right numbers? You bet you would. Because, by winning the
lottery, the outcome would be life changing. Some of the wisdom we allow to drift by us could also be life changing. Write it down. I’m very goal oriented. I make lists and write things down. The items on a to-do list for today are actually mini goals. I believe every day we should have a list of things we want to accomplish and write them down. It’s proven that you will achieve more by using a list. The other thing I think is important for young people, or all people, to keep in mind is never miss an opportunity to shut up and listen. One thing I know for a fact is we do not get any smarter while we are talking. Some of the people I respect the most are people who say very little and yet, could brag for days about their accomplishments. They have no need to prove anything or impress anyone. wo of my favorite times of year are fall and spring. Fall because the weather is so nice and brisk, the trees lose their leaves, the grass begins to turn brown, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really a gorgeous time of year. As I write this article Easter will be coming up next week and spring is already in the air. Easter reminds us of the reality of death and life. The reason death is first is because Jesus taught us the most valuable lesson of spring - that you can have life after death. Throughout life I have noticed that a popular topic for conversation is all of the issues we have in our nation, our world and our government. It reminds me that this world we call home is not really home at all. How do we know this? We look to the homing instincts of the geese when they fly south for the winter. The salmon when they make their way up the tributaries from the Pacific Ocean. Who put that homing instinct in these amazing animals? The same God that overcame death has put a homing instinct in us that bellows from our inner most being that this world is not our home. We are created with a void in our life that can only be filled by the presence of the God of the resurrection. Jesus died on Friday of the Passover week in Jerusalem. On Sunday morning, the stone was rolled away and Jesus appeared to over 200 people to prove that He and only He has the power to give new life. We go through fall, winter and spring many times in our lifetime. It may be winter for you on the inside and maybe spring on the outside. Jesus has the power to bring new life to you, should you choose to accept His sacrifice and believe in His resurrection. Let Him be the Lord of all your life.
