THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fibers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today. With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate. Barry Burk Roping Roundup th Celebrates 25 Anniversary

16-19 Boys Tiedown Roping champion, Justin Parke from Gooding, Idaho

T

wenty-five years have come and gone since the idea for “a special calf roping where the young ropers of the country could all get together to showcase their talent” was put into motion. The names of the winners in the past years read like a who’s who of the present-day professional calf ropers. Putting together this “silver anniversary edition” offered some new challenges. Barry had heart surgery in January, several states scheduled their Jr. High State Finals the same week in May and, added to that, an already tough economy. It seems all the challenges were met as 625 entries competed for a payoff of over

$62,000 plus saddles, roping equipment, and a full line of cowboy attire from hats to boots. As an added feature to this year’s Roundup, the voice of a talented, young announcer from Oklahoma, Garrett Yerrigan, was called upon to provide some entertainment and professionalism for the Roundup. He did a great job and everyone really enjoyed him. The Roundup started off with the 13 – 15 Tiedown roping at noon on Friday, with ninty-one contestants. The first roper out, Dublin, Texas roper, Aaron Calloway, was told by Barry he had a great calf and he used him like a pro, tying him in 9.08 to

win that go round. The fastest calf of this roping came in the second go when Stephenville, Texas cowboy, Marty Yates, tied one in 8.98 to win that round. In the third round, Colby Jenkins, Call, Texas, made his move, tying his calf in 9.53 to win that round and take over the lead in the Average. His fourth-place win in the short go gave Colby a 44.66 on four and the championship saddle. As is tradition, Saturday morning is time for the 12 & Under Tiedown. The first go round was won by Hondo Harris, Agua Dulce, Texas, with his 14.73, but Westyn Hughes, Caldwell, Texas, proved to be the man of the hour as he placed on every calf and won the Average with a 56.15. Dublin, Texas cowboy, Sy Felton, captured the short go with a rapid 12.68 to move from fourth to second in the Average. The fastest calf of the roping was turned in by Westyn Hughes with his 12.28 in the third go round. While the little ropers are the main event in the coliseum, the 13 – 15 Breakaway ropers are turning in some quick times in the number 2 arena. Pawhuska, Oklahoma roper, Tyler Milligan, started off hot by winning the 1st round with a 2.88 and then won second in round two with a 2.85. Ryder Gann, Tahlequah, Oklahoma, won the 2nd round with his 2.82. As he has done in the past, Stephenville, Texas cowboy, Marty Yates, won the 3rd round with a rapid 2.45 and then got even faster in the short go with a 2.29 to win the round and take the Average with the time of 12.83on four head. On Sunday we always start off thanking the Lord for all his

19 & Under Girls Breakaway Champion, Kaity Beaty from Ponca City, Oklahoma

In arena number 2 on Sunday afternoon, the 12 & Under Breakaway roping was the event to watch. The first round went to Mt. Home, Texas roper, Dakota Felton with a 3.04. Round number 2 was won by Ty Iselt, Lincoln, Texas with his speedy 2.91. In the third round, Tiedown Champion, Westyn Hughes, put it away with the fastest time of the roping, a 2.88. In rounds 2 and 3, Cooper Lee, Quitman, Arkansas, had been getting checks and came into the short go in the lead in the Average. His second-place time of 3.33 in the short go gave him the victory in the Average with a time of 14.37 on four head. As a footnote to this event, it has to be mentioned that seven-year-old, Cinch Moody, Stephenville, Texas, was one of the only twenty-one contestants out of 103 entries that had time on all three head prior to the short round. Monday, Memorial Day, brings on the fast and the furious 16 – 19 Boys Tiedown Roping. Reese

blessings. Talented singer and contestant’s mom, Christy McGuire and Barry’s buddy, Big Rick Eggenburg, filled the coliseum with beautiful music and a tremendous message was delivered by Pastor Marty Brock. After a great church service, it was time for the 19 & Under Girls Breakaway as 133 young ladies were ready to rope. The 1st round was won by Ponca City, Oklahoma cowgirl, Kaity Beaty, with a time of 2.72, which would be the fast time of the roping. In round number 2, Merryville, Louisana roper, Paige Plush, was the winner with her 2.91. TiAda Gray, Lovington, New Mexico, trying to redeem herself from a broken barrier in round 2, turned in a 2.80 to win the 3rd round. Kaity Beaty came into the short go in the lead and sealed the deal by winning that round with a time of 3.43 to take the championship. Her average time of 12.68 will go into the record books as the second fastest time in 25 years of the Roundup.

Riemer, Stinnett, Texas, was the fastest of the 142 contestants in round number 1 with his 8.54. It went down to the last roper to declare the winner of round number 2 as Heath Thomas, Hemphill, Texas turned in the time of 8.81. Round number 3 is usually when the fastest time of the day comes but not this year. Tomball, Texas roper, Wes Wyrick, captured the round with his 8.68 which let the 8.54 of Reese Riemer in round number 1 claim the honor of having the fastest time. While all this had been happening, Justin Parke of Gooding, Idaho had been just roping solid, putting short 10second runs together. He came into the short go leading the Average but all fifteen ropers were separated by only a little over three seconds. The short go was won by Pleasanton, Texas roper Cody Lawrence with a 8.79 to move him into the lead in the Average. Justin roped his final calf in the solid style he had shown all day in the time of 9.18 for 3rd in the round and 1st in the Average with a time of 39.58 on four head. A new Tod Slone Championship saddle and a pocketfull of money made the trip back to Idaho a lot more pleasant. As we bring another BB Roping Roundup to a close, a big pat on the back goes to the Alpha Gama Rho fraternity boys from Texas A & M Commerce and their sponsor Dr. Flavio Ribeiro who manned the stall office and provided all the chute help. For a good roping the cattle are the main ingredient and a great job was done by Mark Holder for the 12 & Under calves and by Glen Robinson for the calves for the other age groups. With the tough economy presenting challenges on every corner, a big Thank You goes out to the following sponsors who really make this roping a success: Ardmore Tourism Authority, Bailey Motors, Brooks-Maberry, Inc., Choctaw Casino & Resort, Cinderella Horses, Circle M Trailers, Diamond T Arena,

Brazile Pulls Off Double Win In Return To Competition At 50th Daines Ranch Rodeo Courtesy of PRCA

T

revor Brazile’s return to competition went just fine – even if it did come a little earlier than planned. He won the tie-down roping and paired with Patrick Smith to win the team roping at the 50th Annual Daines Ranch Rodeo in Innisfail, Alberta, over the June 16-20 weekend, earning $10,180. He did all of this after trying to doctor release out of the rodeo because his injured elbow still hasn’t healed to his satisfaction and with virtually no practice in the five weeks since his last rodeo appearance. “If I’d started another doctor release, I wouldn’t be able to compete for 10 days, and I’d miss all the Fourth of July rodeos. My doctor actually told me to take another 4-6 weeks at home, but the pain’s no worse than it was, and it’s rodeo time.” The big payday at Daines Ranch lifted Brazile’s season earnings total to $120,454, keeping him more than $56,000 ahead of second-place Ryan Jarrett as he bids to win his record-breaking eighth all-around world championship. Brazile is also first in the tie-down roping world standings, sixth in steer roping and sixth among team roping headers.

Like Son, Like Father! Glen Stuckey followed in his son’s footsteps by winning the Strad $1,000 Bonus this month as his son did in February. Players from Texas, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Colorado all competed for the prize.

Slaying Our Giants

T

here’s no doubt in my mind that my father would have been a world champion calf roper if he had chosen to make a career in rodeo. I have a picture of him from the National Finals Rodeo in Dallas where he was getting off on the right side and holding his slack. Obviously he was way ahead of his time. The most rodeos he made in any one year was thirty-eight, and that’s back when most people went to all they could get to. There were two things that kept him from being all that he could be as a roper or from winning world titles.

First, he never spent any amount of money for a horse and always made his own. There’s nothing wrong with that and I respect him for that. Secondly, he had a family with five kids and did not want to leave us. He always had one or two jobs at home and just went to a few rodeos. He stayed home for his family. My dad has no regrets whatsoever and knows he made the right choice. As one of his five kids, I know I’m grateful. Having my dad there while I was growing up and learning had a huge impact on the man and roper I am today. Knowing this, I’ve taken those two things on in my own life as giants to slay. I focus on those two things and will do whatever it takes. I’ll never let money keep me from buying the right horse, even if I have to borrow it. As for the other, I don’t want to be away from

Down the Line continued my family any more than my father did. To be the husband and father I want to be, I need to have my family with me. As much as I love what I do, it will never be as important as or deprive me of my family. Therefore, we travel in a ‘Toter Home’ which is basically like a NASCAR tour bus with living quarters. To excel at anything requires sacrifice of some kind. In the last year, by working with a trainer, I’ve radically improved my strength and agility, none of which came without sacrifice. Whether it’s giving up some of my favorite food or the hundred plus sit-ups I do every day, it’s worth it for the improvement it’s made in me and my roping. In the end, I won’t define my career by world titles, NFR qualifications, or money won. I will judge myself by asking if I did everything possible to be the very best I could be. To really evaluate my career, everything has to be taken in perspective including the adversities, wins, and losses. That’s what I use to evaluate myself and not P/U by Wcomparing myself CH VSA IN HOUSE to PROOF others. I will have to know, without a doubt that I left nothing to chance and no stone unturned. If you have giants you need to slay, go after them with whatever you have. Even if it’s only a slingshot. See you down the line and God bless.

A man who has friends must himself be friendly... Proverbs 18:24 (NKJV)

M

y son had a roping horse named Buster. This horse really wanted to be your friend. However, when Buster was in his formative years he had several traumatic things happen to him. He was born and raised in Colorado and CRX’D as a young horse his owner took him elk hunting. During this hunt, his owner used Buster to pack a large bull elk off the mountain. Buster got spooked and ran off to the camp with this huge bull elk strapped on him. After that, in the next few months, on two separate occasions bulls got him down in the sale barn. Needless to say, Buster had a very traumatic childhood and as much as he wanted to be your friend he had trouble being friendly with strangers, and occasionally even with family members. We learned to overlook many of Busters’ faults because he really was a good horse. Many times in our personal life we automatically shut out certain individuals that we form an opinion about in thirty seconds. Forming an opinion so quickly causes us to miss some of the greatest gifts in life; the relationships God blesses us with. You may have been burned on occasion, or have been done wrong (like Buster) and had a troubled childhood. I would like to encourage you to ask for God’s help to get you past the pain and keep your attitude towards others friendly. Not everyone still waves when you pass them on the road but it doesn’t mean that they are not friendly. Not everyone appears friendly because they may have a little “Buster” in them. So remember to give them a chance and show them how to be friendly, by being friendly no matter how different they may be from you. Hot Summer Action

G

et Ready – Set – Go! Summer time is here and for calf ropers, that means the fun has started and if you haven’t been to a rodeo, jackpot or USCRA event yet – you are missing out. From PRCA caliber ropers to those just starting out in the sport, it is hitting its high for 2010 and some of the best events of the year are just around the corner. Jr. calf ropers have to be counting the days before this years 26th annual Roy Cooper World Championship event that will be hosted at the brand new Circle T Arena in Denton, Texas. With the great turnout of the recent Barry Burk Jr. event as well as the Carter Robertson event that wrapped up at the end of May, things look good for

Jr. competitors who are planning to attend this year’s Roy Cooper event. For ropers who have grown out of the Jr. divisions, the USCRA has set the stage for another great event over the 4th of July holiday. The Firecracker 5-Header will be hosted at the Lonestar Arena in Stephenville, Texas and will no doubt be a hit among ropers of every caliber. Not only is there a great format, but the early summer event pays like a slot machine and Tod Slone saddles will be up for grabs to the Average winners of the EE, 00, #1 and #2 ropers of the weekend. These are only a few examples of the great events that are on the calf roping schedule for the next month. I believe ropers really enjoy these types of events. The bigger money, larger prizes and added excitement of these events make competitors rise to the occasion and craft a

whole new attitude in the sport. That is what makes summertime so great for calf ropers. It would be awesome to see more of these type of events hosted throughout the entire year. I know the jackpot events are important, and create a practice area, or a beginning place for ropers, but if a large event was within driving distance every other month or at least every quarter, I bet ropers would jump on the chance to compete in these bigger and more exciting events. I believe the sport is ready for this step forward. Larger events, different formats, more prizes and more excitement will generate more ropers and more events in the long run – I guarantee it. The sport of calf roping is thriving and making a move to grow events and attract more competitors is vital to future of the sport.
