MISSION STATEMENT Wayne State University believes that intercollegiate athletics are an important and wholesome adjunct to the principal purposes of the University: (1) the advancement of knowledge through research and investigation; and (2) the dissemination of knowledge through teaching. To that end, participants in intercollegiate athletics must be, first and foremost, students whose fundamental aim is to obtain a sound education. A major mission of the University is to achieve an increasing level of excellence in the quality of its programs and to enhance the visibility and recognition of the University as a whole. Students who participate in intercollegiate athletics are directly involved in the implementation of this mission of excellence, and by such participation, provide a unifying objective of community and University. Wayne State University believes that a well-balanced program in intercollegiate sports is important so long as it remains in proper focus as an ancillary of the real purposes of the University; so long as it remains under academic control; so long as the players are bona fide students; and so long as the coaches strive to instill qualities of honesty, sportsmanship and clean play.

athletic director rob fournier
It has been a decade (1 September 2000) since Rob Fournier was named Director of Athletics at Wayne State University. A lot has changed in those ten (10) years including the department’s competitive success, classroom achievements, outreach initiatives in the community and the physical structure of the athletic campus. That development has followed a plan that focuses on positive opportunities for today’s student-athletes and supporters. The results have been telling. Wayne State University’s ten (10) best finishes in the prestigious NACDA Cup standings (which measures the overall competitive success of athletic programs around the country) have all occurred in the last 10 years including the two highest marks ever in the past two years – eleventh (11th) in 2009 and twenty-first (21st) in 2010. Those respective finishes secured that WSU would finish in the top four and top seven percent of all Division II athletic programs in those respective seasons. Nine of sixteen (16) athletic teams advanced to the NCAA tournament last season. In those 10 years WSU has catapulted over 100 places in the NACDA rankings. Additionally, in those 10 years, 32 WSU coaches have been named Conference Coach of the Year while three have gone on to be distinguished as National Coach of the Year. For his efforts, Fournier was honored by NACDA as the Athletics Director of the Year in the Central Region in 2008. Also in 2009-10, the athletic department celebrated the naming of 29 All-Americans. Not surprisingly, the 133 All-Americans that have been honored nationally in the past four years are the most in any like period and coincidently exceed any 10-year period in the 93 years of WSU athletics. Last year was also a record-setting year academically and in the community. The Fall (2009) term’s cumulative grade-point average for all student-athletes was 3.08 while the Winter term’s mark was also 3.08. Thirteen (13) of WSU’s sixteen (16) athletic programs had cumulative grade-point averages above 3.00. In addition, in only nine months, WSU studentathletes contributed an exemplary 7,429 community
volleyball
service hours volunteering at a variety of Detroit initiatives. The rise in both academic average and community outreach has been dramatic, consistent and unprecedented. In addition, in the latest federally-mandated graduation rate report, WSU student-athletes received an undergraduate degree at a rate 20 percent higher than the comparable campus population. These, and other academic achievements, are recognized at the annual academic banquet, which he started in 2001. Fournier’s ability to generate private and corporate support has dramatically altered the physical setting of the athletic campus and the practice/competitive opportunities for WSU student-athletes. In his 10 years, he has secured $8,549,957 (9/1/10) in revenue excluding an additional 1.374 million in deferred gifts. That total has helped complete the following facility initiatives: football locker room; baseball’s replica Fenway Park baseball stadium which displays the former Tiger Stadium scoreboard on its famous “Green Monster facade; men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms; softball grandstand, walkway and press box; a Boston Garden-like parquet floor for basketball; Hall of Fame foyer; swimming video board, pool deck and bleachers in the natatorium; football ticket booths and stadium entrance; outdoor marquee; FieldTurf and a new track; scoreboards for baseball and football with a video display; trainer’s treatment area; new USTA tennis courts; and a design charette for a new arena. The physical transformation has been both noticeable and imaginative and boasts a number of cosmetic infrastructure changes as well. In the past six years alone, student-athletes have committed nearly 27,000 community service hours
with such programs as St. Leo’s and St. Aloysius soup kitchens, Motor City Makeover, Make-A-Wish, Relay for Life, canned food drives, Boys and Girls Club, Toys-for-Tots, Skate for the Cure, Genesis House, Focus Hope and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. In particular, the Think Detroit/PAL initiative pairs WSU student-athletes and coaches with over 13,000 Detroit school children in a variety of program and outreach activities. All this is accomplished under the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, one of the first in the conference. Fournier has also initiated an outreach effort for coaches and staff to volunteer one day a

month to a charitable cause in a program labeled WIN -- Warriors in the Neighborhood. Fournier served three years as a member of the NCAA regional-ranking football committee whose responsibilities include selecting the top teams in the region each week and the teams that advance to the postseason. This year will be his third on the NCAA softball regional ranking committee. He currently serves as the chair of the GLIAC officiating committee and is past President of the Conference Executive Committee. In women’s hockey, he served as the
chair of the Structure Committee and a member of the Executive Committee. Prior to joining Wayne State, Fournier served as the Senior Associate Commissioner and general counsel for the Mid-American Conference. While serving as the acting Commissioner of the Conference (1999), he moved the league office from Toledo to Cleveland, wrote and secured a long-term contract for the men’s basketball tournament at the Gund Arena (now Quicken Loans Arena) and secured the three largest corporate gifts in the history of the MAC including First Energy as the tournament sponsor for the men’s postseason basketball tournament. He also wrote and negotiated the Motor City Bowl football contract that is the MAC’s longest post-season Bowl alignment. As the chief compliance officer for the league, Fournier investigated and reported on over 350 infraction cases that insured fairness in case resolution and corrective action. At the request of institutions, he has appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and conducted campus reviews of compliance effectiveness in financial aid, rules education, eligibility and institutional control. He has served as liaison to various NCAA committees for which the conference held cabinet positions. The MAC presidents recognized Fournier’s achievements when they unanimously conferred a Certificate of Commendation and a mark of esteem for his efforts in 1999. A licensed attorney, he received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude and his master’s with honors from the University of Akron. He was a national forensics champion and qualified for the national finals in six events. Fournier received his law degree from Akron in 1986 and was admitted to the Ohio bar that same year where he is still licensed to practice.

Phil Nickel’s Career Head Coaching Record Year School 1996 Thomas More College 1997 Thomas More College 2008 Wayne State University 2009 Wayne State University OVERALL @ WSU OVERALL CAREER
Phil Nickel was named the 12th head coach in the history of the Wayne State University women’s volleyball program on March 3, 2008, by WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. In his first season at the helm, Nickel led the Warriors to the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 2005. Wayne State advanced past the opening round for the first time since 1997 by defeating Hillsdale in the quarterfinal in Detroit. The Warriors were defeated by Grand Valley State in the semifinals, but finished the season 17-12 including a 9-7 mark in conference play. The following year, Nickel’s squad went 199 to post the highest win total since 1998 and the highest winning percentage since 1997. The Warriors again qualified for the conference tournament, losing 3-1 at Ashland in the quarterfinals. “In Phil we have the person that reflects well on the long and comprehensive national search process we undertook,” said Fournier. “He brings leadership, a strong recruiting background and knows what it takes to build and sustain a winning program. His positive reception during the interview process by student-athletes, staff and other coaches underscores those intangible attributes that are so necessary to work with divergent groups and achieve success. I look forward to the energy, focused approach and work habits that have been a trademark of his career.” Nickel came to Wayne State after serving as the assistant coach at the University of Houston for the last six seasons (2002-07). His responsibilities at Houston included recruiting, personnel development and assisting with on-court coaching. During his tenure with the

Rob has made a commitment to the volleyball program, and I look forward to working with him to reach the goals we have set.” His other NCAA Division I volleyball experience includes assistant coaching positions at Illinois State (2000-01) and Wright State (1998-99), as well as a head coaching position at Division III Thomas More College for two years (1996-97). Nickel compiled a 34-43 mark in his two seasons with the Saints leading them to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a #4 ranking in the South Region in 1997. TMC finished the year with a 20-17 record. Nickel has served as a committee member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, which represents the interests of collegiate

gliac information/composite schedule The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 38 years. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University, and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years of existence as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school. The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year. Prior to 1995-96, all member institutions of the GLIAC were
located in the state of Michigan. On December 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew from the conference after the 199697 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status. Westminster College, located in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, became the 14th member of the GLIAC when it accepted its expansion offer in May of 1997. On June 30, 2000 Westminster left the conference as it changed its affiliation to NCAA Division III. The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007, and competes in 18 of the league’s championships. The addition of Tiffin left the GLIAC with 12 full members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for the 2008-09 academic year. The GLIAC moved on under new leadership during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. Also under his leadership, the conference has grown to offering championships
in 20 sports (10 men’s and 10 women’s) while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and studentathletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play. The conference entered another new era on July 1, 2010 when Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, entered the GLIAC. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC is rotated alphabetically by school, with Don Brubacher, Director of Athletics at Hillsdale College, serving as GLIAC President in 2010-11. Dr. Larry Arnn, President of Hillsdale College, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year. The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historically black college or university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009. Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissioner for Compliance/SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner for Media Relations; Denise Gross, Assistant to the Commissioner; Mike McCann, Supervisor of Football Officials; Kim Vieira, Supervisor of Soccer Officials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; Rob Doss, Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials; Bill Ek, Supervisor of Men’s Basketball Officials; and Rich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.

volleyball August 25 Wayne State was predicted to finish in a tie with Hillsdale for first place in the South Division, according to the 2009 GLIAC preseason coaches’ poll. The Warriors and Chargers accumulated 22 points each in the poll. Wayne State also received two first-place votes to Hillsdale’s three. Ashland, which totaled 17 points to place third, received the other first-place vote. August 28 The Warriors opened its 2009 schedule with a 3-0 victory over Urbana on the first day of the Warrior Invitational at the Matthaei. Wayne State hit .347 for the match, compared to Urbana’s .036 mark, in a match which took just one hour to complete. Candis Jenich posted a double-double with 17 kills - a career high - and 10 digs, as did Cydney Biessel with 35 assists and 10 digs in her collegiate debut. August 29 WSU finished the weekend without dropping a set, earning a 3-0 victory over Slippery Rock in the final match of the Warrior Invitational. Wayne State limited SRU to just seven points in the third set, the first time WSU held an opponent to a single-digit score in a non-tiebreaker set since Sept. 2, 2005 against Virginia Union. Biessel and Jenich were selected to the Warrior Invitational All-Tournament Team, and Sarha Gosselin was named the event’s Most Valuable Player. Gosselin totaled 44 kills, 40 digs, nine blocks and a .312 hitting percentage on the weekend. September 5 Despite dropping its first set after six straight 3-0 victories, WSU remained undefeated with a 3-1 win over St. Joseph’s (Ind.) at the Findlay TownePlace Suites Classic. The Warriors followed that with a 3-2 comeback victory against Missouri-St. Louis to start the season 8-0. Gosselin was also named the MVP of this tournament, collecting a teambest 56 kills and five aces along with 31 digs and seven blocks. Lauren Mallast was selected to the All-Tournament team. September 9 Mallast was chosen as the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week, the third award of her career. She led WSU at the net with a .308 hitting percentage and 28 blocks in the TownePlace Suites Classic, posting 33 kills on the second day. September 11 Wayne State was handed its first loss of the season in a five-set battle at Ferris State to open conference play. Three of the five sets were decided by just two points in FSU’s 3-2 victory, including a 15-13 result in the decisive fifth set as the match crossed the two-hour mark. September 12 The Warriors defeated Grand Valley State for the first time since 1998, earning a 3-1 victory at the GVSU Fieldhouse and snapping the 18th-ranked Lakers’ 37-match home winning streak. WSU won the first, third and fourth sets by identical 25-23 scores, avenging a 2008 defeat in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals and handing Grand Valley State its first loss in Allendale since October 7, 2006. Double-doubles from Jenich and Gosselin highlighted the winning effort. September 15 Erasing a two-set deficit in a 3-2 win at Northwood, the Warriors improved to 10-1 on the season. Mallast led Wayne State at the net with 18 kills and nine blocks, while Jenich totaled 16 kills and 12 digs for her fourth straight double-double. Biessel’s 54 assists were the most since Oct. 10, 2003, when Rebecca Hague collected 61 at Lake Superior State.

2009 season timeline
September 19 Wayne State rebounded from a shutout loss at Hillsdale with a 3-2 victory at Findlay, improving to 3-1 in five-set matches. Gosselin had a team-high 16 kills and 14 digs, while freshman Kate Sak contributed eight kills and seven blocks.
October 31 Wayne State snapped its five-match conference losing streak with a 3-0 victory at Tiffin. Mallast, who contributed nine kills and hit .438, also compiled four blocks to bring her career total to 286, surpassing Kristin Haewski (1987-88; 282) for ninth all-time at Wayne State.
September 25 In its first home match in nearly a month, Wayne State defeated Ashland 3-1, at the Matthaei. The freshman class provided some key contributions, as Biessel posted a double-double with 38 assists and 12 digs, while Sak and Madie Kent combined for nine kills and eight blocks. Sak also had three service aces.
November 5 Meg Leone was selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV College Division Third Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Leone, the only four-year senior on the 2009 roster, was the first WSU volleyball player ever to receive such an award from CoSIDA.
September 26 The Warriors remained unbeaten at home following a 3-0 win over Tiffin in a match that took just 61 minutes to complete. Gosselin, Jessica Condeni and Maureen MacDonald tied for team-high honors with 10 digs as WSU earned its seventh shutout win of the year. Mallast hit .474 and led the Warriors with 11 kills and four blocks.
November 7 The Warriors secured their second consecutive berth in the GLIAC Tournament after defeating Findlay in five sets as the Warriors celebrated Senior Day at the Matthaei. All five seniors contributed to the victory, with Gosselin and Jenich each recording a double-double in their final home match. Gosselin totaled 19 kills and 19 digs, while Jenich finished with 12 kills and 15 digs. Leone had a season-high eight kills along with four digs and a pair of blocks. Mallast contributed four blocks and three kills, and Condeni totaled four digs and was 21-for-21 on serves. Biessel finished with 48 assists, her eighth 40-plus performance of the year.
October 2 Wayne State extended hits winning streak to four matches with its eighth shutout victory of the year at Lake Superior State. Jenich led WSU with 12 kills and a .458 hitting percentage. Sak chipped in with five kills and a season-high eight blocks. October 9 Wearing pink jerseys to “Dig for a Cure” in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Warriors fell for the first time at home in 2009, losing a 3-1 decision to Northern Michigan. After dropping the first set, 25-20, the Wildcats won the next three (25-21, 25-22, 26-24) to extend their winning streak over the Warriors to 26 matches dating back to 1990. Wayne State held a 10-point lead late in the fourth set but could not hold off the NMU comeback, resulting in WSU losing consecutive matches for the first time all season. October 10 Gosselin matched her career-high with 21 kills to go with 16 digs, but Wayne State lost a five-set match to Michigan Tech at the Matthaei. MacDonald finished with 15 digs, and Lindsey Graciak racked up 11 digs and three aces. October 16 In its first match against Northern Kentucky since 1999, Wayne State won its opening match at the Asics GLIAC/ GLVC Crossover. Gosselin set a career-high with 22 kills in the five-set triumph. Wayne State followed that with a 3-1 win over Drury, supported by Mallast’s career-best 21 kills. Condeni totaled a career-high 17 digs with three aces in the victory over the Panthers. October 17 Wayne State capped off the Crossover with its second shutout win of the season over St. Joseph’s (Ind.). Gosselin, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, finished with 50 kills, a .396 hitting percentage, six aces and 26 digs on the weekend. The Warriors were the only team to go undefeated at the Crossover. October 20 Gosselin became the first Wayne State player to receive Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week honors. She was also named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week, having guided WSU to a 17-5 record, already matching the team’s 2008 win total. The 2009 squad was the first to win 17 of its first 22 matches since the 1997 Tartars were 19-3.
November 11 The 2009 season came to an abrupt end as the Warriors dropped three straight sets in a 3-1 loss at Ashland in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament. The Warriors, who had not qualified for postseason play in consecutive seasons since the late 1990s, won the first set 25-19, but the Eagles swept the next three (25-19, 25-15, 25-20) to advance to the semifinals. Wayne State, which has not won at Kates Gymnasium since 2001, was led up front by Mallast who had 12 kills, a .348 hitting percentage and four blocks. Sak contributed 10 kills and hit at a .304 clip. MacDonald led all players with 21 digs. Wayne State finishes its 2009 season with a 19-9 record, the most wins since 1998 and the best winning percentage since 1997. November 12 Three Warriors received All-GLIAC awards for 2009. Gosselin was selected to the All-GLIAC First Team for the second consecutive season. She became just the fourth WSU player to earn two career First Team selections and the first since Erin Meyer became a three-time First Team South Division honoree in 1997-99. Mallast claimed her second straight Second Team honor, and Sak was chosen to the Honorable Mention squad. Sak was one of only two freshmen to earn All-GLIAC status, along with Ashland’s Brittany Snider who was named Freshman of the Year. November 24 Gosselin was voted to two All-Midwest Region teams, the Daktronics, Inc. All-Region Second Team as voted upon by the area’s sports information directors, as well as the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Honorable Mention All-Region squad. She became the second Tartar/ Warrior to claim more than one career All-Region award, joining Rachel Parham who received AVCA honors in 198687. December 22 Condeni, Gosselin, Leone, Mallast and MacDonald were all named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team. Condeni, Gosselin, and Mallast were eligible for the award for the first time in 2009, while MacDoanld became a two-time recipient and Leone claimed the third award of her career.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Warriors hosted “Dig for a Cure” in October as part of its efforts to raise funds and awareness for research and treatment for the disease. Wayne State wore pink uniforms against Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech at the Matthaei, and sold pink decals as part of the fundraising efforts.
Sarha Gosselin played in all 107 sets in 2009, posting eight double-doubles and finishing fifth in the conference in kills per set (3.27). She was an All-GLIAC First Team and twotime All-Region selection as a senior, and finished her twoyear Wayne State career ranked third all-time in kills per set (3.48) and attempts per set (9.39).
Lauren Mallast, who with Gosselin played in every set in 2009, broke into the WSU top-10 lists for block solos (67 - T9th), block assists (229 - 10th) and total blocks (296 - 9th) after only two years at Wayne State. The 2008 national leader in blocking average, Mallast finished second in the GLIAC (eighth in NCAA Division II) in 2009 with a 1.24 blocks/set average. She attained Second Team All-GLIAC status for the second straight season.
Meg Leone, a three-time GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree and officer on the WSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, provided the student-athlete response at the annual Academic Recognition Luncheon in April. Leone was the first WSU volleyball player to earn CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors.
The volleyball team was among the squads participating in the sidewalk painting effort to create the “Spirit Walk” on the WSU athletic campus as part of the inaugural “W” Day in April, an event which served as the culmination of the Club 35 campaign, celebrating 35 years of women’s athletics at Wayne State. Cydney Biessel burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2009 and totaled 1,015 assists, 13th-most in school history. She finished fifth in the GLIAC with a 9.58 assists/set average. Biessel also tied for second on the team in service aces (21) and contributed 170 digs, 51 kills and 45 blocks in her rookie campaign.

The 2010 season will mark the 36th year of varsity women’s volleyball at Wayne State University. Since the program’s inception in 1975, under the direction of head coach Gloria Soluk, WSU has won 615 matches, claimed three conference championships as well as three GLIAC South Division titles, and made two appearances at the NCAA Regional tournament. After posting a combined record of 30-80 over the first four seasons, the 1979 Tartars went 33-15, including an 8-2 conference mark, and won their first of three consecutive GLIAC championships (sharing the 1979 title with Oakland). Kathy Higgins, the program’s all-time leader in career winning percentage (.786), led the 1981 squad to a 34-9 record, which remains the singleseason record for victories, and was named GLIAC Coach of the Year. The Tartars went 32-9 the following season but were edged out by Ferris State for the GLIAC title, as the Bulldogs were a perfect 8-0 in league play compared to WSU’s 7-1 mark. Wayne State’s program continued to build through the 1980s as Matt Peck began his 11year tenure – longest in school history – in 1984. Peck’s teams finished with a winning record eight times, including the 32-6 record of 1986 which remains WSU’s highest single-season winning percentage (.842).

In 1987, the Tartars finished 27-7 and qualified for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional for the first time ever, falling to conference champion Ferris State in a five-set opening round battle. Nonetheless, Peck was named GLIAC Coach of the Year, and Wayne State had its first volleyball All-American crowned in senior Rachel Parham. Parham, Wayne State’s all-time leader in kills, blocks, hitting percentage and aces who was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999, was also selected as the GLIAC Player of the Year in 1987, the only volleyball player in school history to earn the award. As the program rolled on into the 1990s, Wayne State eclipsed the 20-win mark three more times under Peck, including the 1994 season, Peck’s final year at WSU. Behind top hitter Demitria Brooks, who led the team with 501 kills and a then-school record 559 digs her senior year and joined Parham as the only players in school history to reach the 500-kill mark in a single season, the Tartars went 26-10 and qualified for the NCAA Regional tournament for the second time, losing a first-round match at Northern Michigan. Tim Bearden took over as head coach in 1995 and, as the GLIAC split into two divisions, led Wayne State to three consecutive South Division championships from 1996-98. One season
program history
after reaching the consolation final of the GLIAC Tournament in 1997, the team posted a programbest 15-4 league record in 1998. Wayne State finished 21-13 overall that season, but would subsequently endure six straight losing seasons as the program struggled heading into the new millennium. Wayne State was ousted from the 1999 GLIAC Tournament by Grand Valley State in straight sets, and would not return until 2005 in Ernie Gilbert’s second year as head coach. Elisa Joris was the standout on that squad, becoming the second AllAmerican in program history her senior year. She led the nation with a 1.79 blocks/game average, second-best at WSU behind Parham’s 1.88 average in 1987. In 2008, the first season under Phil Nickel’s direction, the Warriors went 17-12, their best record in a decade, and advanced past the first round of the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since 1997. Lauren Mallast led the nation in blocking average (1.51), and Sarha Gosselin was selected as an All-American after finishing with 401 kills, a league-best 3.86 kills/set average, and 259 digs. Last year, Nickel’s squad again qualified for the conference tournament and went 19-9 to post the highest win total since 1998 and the highest winning percentage since 1997.

SERVICES AVAILABLE TO WSU STUDENT-ATHLETES Academic Monitoring The Department of Athletics participates in the university-wide early alert system in which instructors provide notification to students and their advisors about unsatisfactory progress after the fourth week of classes. In conjunction with the coaching staff, requests for information about class attendance and performance are sent to each instructor. The academic coordinator tracks individual progress, schedules meetings with students as appropriate, and personally contacts instructors as necessary. Counseling/Mentoring The coordinator meets with student-athletes individually and arranges for group meetings/workshops with other support service personnel regarding academic, athletic, career, and/or personal issues (for example, group sessions covering such topics as test-taking skills, time management, learning styles, etc.) The Department of Athletics has collaborative relationships with many other critical units on campus to help provide appropriate support services. Advising/Registration In conjunction with academic advisors in the University Advising Center, the coordinator assists student-athletes with term course planning and registration, including holding special student-athlete Orientation sessions to introduce them to NCAA and GLIAC eligibility requirements and departmental academic policies as well as to Wayne State University’s academic programs, procedures and regulations, and services. The office also works closely with academic advisors in all the university’s schools and colleges to ensure appropriate semester course selection and timely progress towards degree. The office serves as a clearinghouse for information about campus resources and student support services, university forms, enrollment deadlines and institutional academic policies and procedures. Structured Study In an effort to help ensure the academic success and the development of consistent study patterns of student-athletes, the coordinator organizes supervised study sessions for each team. Tutorial Services, Writing Center, Mathematics Laboratory The university provides free peer tutoring in most subject areas either on a drop-in or by-appointment basis. In the event that the Academic Success Center cannot provide tutoring for a specific class, the Department of Athletics has set aside funds to hire individual tutors. The coordinator works with academic department chairs to identify qualified tutors and is always available to arrange special individual or group sessions in a variety of areas. As in all other services, the office works in a proactive manner to provide assistance before academic problems arise.
Over 200 student-athletes, faculty and staff attended the annual Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet held in April 2010. athletic academic services The Wayne State Athletic Department has developed a comprehensive approach to academic services for its student-athletes. The department’s goal is to assist studentathletes in pursuit of their designated course of studies and ultimately to achieve graduation. This objective is facilitated by appropriate academic advising, major selection, tutorial assistance and other life skill development and academic support services. A major goal of athletic academic services is to significantly increase the department’s graduation rate over the next five years and to continually emphasize the success of WSU’s student-athletes in the community. Part of the initiative already has been realized by the department’s annual Spring Academic Recognition Banquet that honors student-athletes with a 3.5 or better term grade point average. The name of each graduate is permanently displayed on a brick as part of the department’s “Wall of Fame.” The recognition is prominently displayed in the main concourse as you enter the Matthaei Athletic Facility Complex.
