A Piece of Ribbon 100 Years Later By Rob Fournier, esq, Director of Athletics

When David L. Holmes walked over to the student council meeting at Old Main on an October evening in 1917, there was a sense of excitement in the air. After fifty (50) years as Detroit Medical College/Detroit Normal Training School, the school was about to take the next step in its “evolution”. Dean David Mackenzie (Wayne State did not have an “official” named President until 1933) had announced that intercollegiate athletics would start in the coming year and had hired the young athletic director from nearby Cass Tech to start the program. This was big. As Holmes walked into the packed room he was met with the enthusiasm and anticipation of becoming part of the bourgeoning advent of college sports across the nation’s campuses. They could only dream what was ahead. The Dean saw it as a vehicle to build school pride and excite alumni of the school that back then would soon be fifty (50), while the students saw it as a novelty that was fast becoming an integral part of a college campus. One hundred years later, well…they could only imagine. And both were right in their expectation. As simplistic as it might seem, the young athletic director brought with him pieces of cloth in various colors in a brown bag to the evening meeting. It truly was the first step. I guess you might say this was a “focus group” sans the marketing strategists. They discussed what should be the school colors. Holmes displayed the various arrangements and the group decided upon green and gold. If the colors represented currency, the investment seemed worthwhile even then. Now a century later, its dividends have far exceeded even the most enthusiastic of pioneers. And you need look no further than the long list of graduates to underscore the point. A lot has happened in that century in the department…and a lot more is yet to happen. In that time there has been 617 All-Americans – almost 400 (396) having been so recognized since 2000. In the sixty-seven (67) year history of the Academic All-American Award, there has been 64 honorees at WSU. In the first fifty years of the award, there were 24 recipients who wore Tartar/ Warrior uniforms, and in the last 15 years, 40 awarded with a record 32 in just the last seven years.

Now a mere 100 years later, it might be time to pull out those old shrouds of ribbon and let them unfurl. Obviously not with the same uncertainty as David Holmes questioned back in 1917, but with the same excitement, enthusiasm and spontaneity that makes everyday life so remarkable. the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Those many years as an independent saw remarkable success competing in Division I and earning basketball trips to the NCAA tournament against the likes of Kentucky and DePaul. You could peel back and examine layer, upon layer, upon layer of accomplishment, academic success and competitive achievement. So many stories…so many advances…so many memories. It is a remarkable narrative that is still adding chapters – life-changing chapters. In today’s world of instantaneous gratification, tweets and immediate social posts, there is something refreshing, and nostalgic, about an institution that has survived 100 years. And make no doubt, there were years of simple survival in that glorious story. An experience at Wayne State that has helped define who you are, and who you have become. Maybe once more re-live that exuberance of youth that transformed your life…and impacted the lives of many you met. You have to admit, even after a “few” years, green and gold are always your colors, and the colors that makes you look your best. Come on…it’s still your school. Those colors have not faded. They never do. We’re just a little bit older.

Amazingly there have only been three conference affiliations in those 10 decades including initially as a charter member of the Mid-American Conference (can you imagine if that association had continued?), eleven years in the President’s Athletic Conference, and ultimately since 1975, 2

Harwell Field Grand Opening Recap The Harwell Field project was announced in the summer of 2013 and was unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 18, 2017. Guest speakers included WSU Board of Governors Chair Sandra Hughes O'Brien, WSU President Dr. M. Roy Wilson, WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier, S. Gary Spicer, Sr., longtime friend and attorney for Ernie Harwell, Alan Trammell and Kirk Gibson.

Several media outlets were on hand to cover the exciting event.

The facility includes numerous exhibits which pay tribute to Harwell's marriage to Lulu, audio and video of Harwell’s signature calls and moments, and the controversial Jose Feliciano national anthem during the 1968 World Series. There are interactive areas where you can listen to other announcer's great calls, watch Ernie's farewell speech and read letters written to Ernie.

The building is a replica of Brooklyn Dodgers Ebbets Field rotunda (main entrance). The cost was $2.3 million with all money privately raised (no state funding). Initial announcement was made on June 6, 2013. Ground was broken on August 8, 2016.

Community Service Recap The Wayne State University Department of Athletics and its studentathletes continue to make an impact in the community. For the 2016-17 academic year, the Warriors donated 10,136 hours of service to several organizations around campus and Metro Detroit. Some of the groups that WSU aided include Detroit PAL, Gleaners Food Bank, Komen for the Cure, the HIGH program, Wayne Cares, Detroit Free Press Marathon, Team IMPACT and Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Basic Needs Drive

The marquee event continues to be the Basic Needs Drive where hundreds of WSU student-athletes used a total of 63,000 items (mostly toiletries and hygienic essentials), to make nearly 2,000 bags. Those bags were donated to the Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO) and throughout the downtown area. The NSO relies heavily upon this project and the donation to sustain what they offer to the less-fortunate throughout the entire year. The Southfield Westin hotel donated over 7,000 of those items. Another special event was the #Lunchbag where a group of close to 80 student-athletes prepared nearly 1,500 bag lunches at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church before distributing them at the Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO), Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS) and the Rosa Parks Transit Center.

ae p WSU Athletics c R Summer Camps The Wayne State University Department of Athletics hosted several successful camps during the summer, which brought hundreds of area teams and campers alike to the Midtown campus.

FOOTBALL CAMPS

Over 1,300 high school football players were on campus for three separate prospect camps on June 4, June 14 and June 16. Several programs from around the Midwest were also in attendance, including Michigan State, Iowa, Iowa State, Syracuse, Indiana, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Central Michigan, Ball State, Bowling Green, Dayton, Western Michigan, and Eastern Michigan. Football also hosted a pair of 7-on-7/Big Man Camps on June 22 and June 29 with a total of 300 campers each day.

You can always find more information on Wayne State’s camp programming at WSUAthletics.com/camps.

MEN'S BASKETBALL CAMPS

The men’s basketball program hosted two team camps (Weekend Shootout) on June 16-17 and June 24-25 plus an individual clinic (Warrior Basketball School) from June 26-29. Nearly 700 campers attended all of the sessions.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CAMPS

The women’s basketball program hosted three team camps on June 19-20-21 along with a prospect camp on August 4. In total over 500 campers received great instruction from head coach Carrie Lohr and her staff.

VOLLEYBALL CAMPS

The volleyball program hosted a pair of camps on July 15-16 inside the Matthaei. Nearly 70 participants received instruction from fourth-year head coach Tim Koth, his staff and student-athletes. The Warriors also conducted several satellite camps around the area.

BASEBALL SUMMER CAMP

The Warrior baseball program held its annual summer baseball camp and nearly 200 young ball players attended each of the three days. The camp curriculum changed a bit in 2017 from past years as a campus tour was added to day one and a Comerica Park Tour was a highlight of day two.

We want to remind you of what is acceptable when dealing with our current and prospective student athletes. First, it is important to determine if you must follow the rules surrounding a representative of athletics interest. You are considered a “Representative of Athletics Interest” or “booster” if you: • Are or have been a member of any organization promoting Wayne State University Athletics. • Have ever made a donation to the Athletic Department or any booster organization. • Have ever assisted in evaluating or recruiting prospects. • Have ever helped to arrange or have provided employment to enrolled student-athletes, prospects, to their parents or relatives. • Participated in a Wayne State athletics program. • Once you become a representative or athletics interests, you retain this status FOREVER.

Please keep in mind, it is possible to jeopardize a student-athlete’s eligibility with just one act of kindness! Please ask before you act. 16
