A Women’s Touch By Rob Fournier

Can you think of one thing that a woman has touched that as a result has not improved? I can’t. Medicine, science, engineering, politics have all measurably benefitted by the infusion of ideas and approaches that are purely from a woman’s perspective. And athletics is no different. But like the other examples, it took some time to open that door. Unfortunately too much time. In the 92 year history of WSU athletics there have been a number of talented student athletes who have distinguished themselves on some exceptional athletic teams. Part of that is simply because over time the competition and the method to record those successes became more sophisticated. For some reason, no one remembers who won those early games in upstate New York that Abner Doubleday is credited with evolving into modern day baseball. But folks can pretty much tell you who won the 1984 World Series and who were its participants – down to the last guy on the bench. Recorded history tends to have a longer “shelf life” than what is passed down from word of mouth. The start of women’s athletics at WSU has that same impediment. Little was recorded…and worse yet, few saw any reason to memorialize those results. It was going to pass – the interest, the enthusiasm and the competition. And automobiles were not going to catch on either. That is what makes the “Club 35” campaign so important. It is an attempt to not only tell those stories of WSU’s introduction of women’s athletics but the stories of those early participants. The start of women’s athletics was as unorthodox as many of its first participants. The volleyball team had a thirty-five year old freshman, there was field hockey (but no softball), a full basketball season was eleven (11) games (total), Sharon Dewey was listed as the “women’s athletic coordinator” and it was nearly three years before they decided to recognize women’s athletic accomplishments with a “letter.” The early “exceptional” female student-athletes were those young women who laid the foundation for today’s women’s programs. They did not have much but there was a selfless determination to make it work. That’s the legacy of the many reunions that I have seen this year. The opportunity to express themselves through athletic competition was different for that earlier generation and not too many folks were around to give examples of how it should be accomplished. In reality, the NCAA wanted nothing to do with women’s athletics. Some might try to “re-write” that history today, but for nearly ten years (that first “magical” decade) women’s athletics were a testament to dedication and sacrifice. It was never “handed to them.” What they created was

of their doing and it has evolved into what it is today as a direct result of their work. Just like the mother who takes great pride in watching her daughter develop, those early women’s student-athletes can too symbolically look back with pride at women’s athletics today. And the most lasting characteristic is the enthusiasm. I have been around intercollegiate athletics for awhile (some might say too long). I have seen the landscape of athletics change both literally and figuratively. We have certainly lost that multi-sport participant as the individual sport has become a year long exercise in preparation. Sometimes parental exuberance overshadows the educational objective; there is the coach who can sacrifice an academic approach to gain a competition advantage and the faculty member who sees no purpose in those commitments in athletics if it requires resources that exceed the four walls of a classroom. All diminish what is the core of intercollegiate athletics. But one characteristic that has remained pretty much constant is the approach of female student-athletes. Unchanged is that spontaneous enthusiasm that was as apparent in 1975 as in 2010. The competition, the game, the participants are tantamount. It is not shoe contracts, endorsements or television. It is truly what embodies athletics at its most basic foundation. It is a love of the game and those friendships that are the natural extension of that shared competition. Women student athletes (and I know this is a generalization) seem to still appreciate those little accouterments that are ancillary. They still get excited that someone puts forth the effort to recognize what they do. Little things still matter. Earlier this year we decorated the women’s ice hockey home facility with some large, colorful graphic banners that depicted the ten (10) year history of the program. They replaced a strange mixture of colors – pink, purples and aqua. It was an eyesore. For ten years the women’s team practiced and played contests in that setting but never uttered a word about the décor or the look. They just went about and did their business – which in this case was play hockey. Unfortunately, the cost of replacement for that color combination was too expensive especially in a budget that demands a wise stewardship of all funds. But this was going to be the year. We would replace that motif. What I did not know was how much the women also wanted the change – and the dramatic impact the change would accomplish. Like most facility improvements, we did it without much attention – promise small and deliver big. As the displays went up, I went out to see how the progress was coming. It just so happened that the women’s team was practicing when I arrived. Something unusual took place. As I was on a raised platform viewing the work, the team (in mass) skated over, raised their sticks and with a unified precision dropped them to the ice and yelled “thank you”. That’s women’s athletics at WSU today…in a way, still the embodiment of that spontaneous enthusiasm of 35 years ago. That’s a women’s touch.

WARRIOR WITHIN 35 Years (and counting) By Lisa Seymour

This past year has given me a rare insight into the history of women’s athletics at Wayne State University. As I sat and listened to those student-athletes of an earlier era (some stretching over a generation) it seemed at times I was re-living my own WSU career. It soon became apparent to me that lost in those old game scores, statistics, and competitions were a lot of memories – good memories. Friendships that have transcended careers, accomplishments and a few disappointments. It was apparent to me that even the outcomes of games became less an object of discussion and recollection than those who had participated. It was about friendships. Friendships that were nurtured from long van rides, occasional meals that were higher in caloric content than nutrition and those cadence chants that seemed as rhythmic as if rehearsed by a drill sergeant. It was about coaches who were not in it for the money or the prestige. We are a team all our own, dating back some 35 years…and still counting. I chuckle to myself when I think of the countless groundballs during my four year softball career that were constantly exhorted around Gary and Pat’s admonition: “eat it up, shoot it over, squeeze it tight.” If only the other challenges we will face in life could be so easily dismissed with a good, accurate throw. And as I listened to those Tartars of an earlier era, it was apparent those simple lessons learned over the years in athletics competition have become a source of inspiration, resiliency and pride. In the end, we realized we were all better prepared for the vagrancies of life because of those tests of perseverance we endured as a student-athlete. And no one had regrets over those experiences. Each sport, each team had a character that defined them as a group. That character developed through hard work, a few tears and a lot of laughs – some not appreciated until years later. “We are the Warriors, we cut no one no slack, we play for the name on the front of our jerseys, not for the ones on the back.” This simple chant said after every win by our women’s hockey team extends so much further then just center ice. It may not be great English, perhaps due to the considerable amount of Canadians on our women’s hockey team , but it emphasizes a certain image, a purpose, a spirit, a camaraderie. Those early names on those jerseys have changed countless times over the years but the symbolic name of WSU is now the common denominator for every female student-athlete now bound together by nearly four decades of shared experiences. It truly is the name on the front of the jersey and the names of the other teammates who shared those jerseys with you. That’s what we remember…and that’s what will last. Things have changed a lot in those 35 years. Thankfully for the better. Today’s student-athletes owe a lot to their predecessors just as future generations will undoubtedly look back at us some forty years later with that same perspective. We can only imagine. An old note found in the sports information office file dated 1974 stated “field hockey, it was a long seven game season.” And to think in my softball career we sometimes played seven games in a weekend! I don’t know what it was like for those young women who were the pioneers for what we have become today but I am glad that they started the journey. It has made the road for each of us a little easier…and I am not just talking about in competitive athletics. That is what the “35 campaign” has meant to me. A chance to connect with our past and to also “re-connect” with our commonality – that of enduring friendships.

It Takes a Special Dedication 35 years ago some people might have said: “She throws like a girl.” “She runs like a girl.” “She jumps like a girl.” But today they just say “She’s an All-American.”

Warriors Raise Funds For Cystic Fibrosis

Softball Ranked 20th Nationally By NFCA

Wayne State University student-athletes capped off their successful fall fundraising campaign for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by presenting Grand Valley State University assistant swimming and diving coach Roger Karns with a check for $1,103 on Saturday, Jan. 9, prior to the WSU-GVSU dual meet at the Matthaei Aquatic Center. In September, Karns reached out to fellow members of the GLIAC to support his fundraising efforts for CFF by sponsoring him in a fundraising walk in Winamac, Ind. The disease personally affected Karns when his five-month-old grandson, Ethan, was diagnosed with the disease. Karns set a goal of $1,000 for the race. The $1,103 adds to the over $1,500 Karns has raised to date for the CFF. Left to right: Matt Cunningham, Roger Karns, Wayne State senior swimmer Cauli Bedran, and Rob Fournier Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), a member of the WSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, brought the cause to the attention of the student group. The SAAC made it a fall fundraising initiative to raise money for the foundation in the name of Roger and Ethan Karns. “One of the things that separates WSU student-athletes is their response to a challenge,” commented WSU director of athletics Rob Fournier. “When the general ask went out to assist in this worthwhile endeavor, the WSU SAAC accepted and made a significant difference in an appeal. We may be friendly competitors...but in the end, WSU studentathletes get ‘the bigger picture.’” Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a nonprofit donor-supported organization, is to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease.

The Wayne State University softball team was ranked 20th in the nation in the 2010 NFCA Division II Top 25 Preseason Poll, per voting by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions. The Warriors received 85 points, four more than Wayne State College in Nebraska. Gary Bryce is entering his 29th season as head coach of the Wayne State softball program in the 2010. He has a 925-577-6 (.615) overall record, and ranks seventh all-time among NCAA Division II head coaches in victories. Wayne State has been nationally ranked 23 times in Bryce’s tenure and has made 15 appearances in the NCAA Tournament since 1982. The 2009 senior class was the first in school history to make four consecutive NCAA Gary Bryce Tournament appearances. The Warriors will begin the 2010 season Fe. 19-21 at the University of AlabamaHuntsville Charger Chillout in Decatur, Ala.

Tiger Stadium Scoreboard Installed At Wayne State The Wayne State University baseball program will feature a “new” addition to its field this coming season, as a scoreboard from historic Tiger Stadium was installed on the Green Monster left-field wall at WSU on Wednesday, Dec. 16. A landmark in Detroit for nearly 100 years, Tiger Stadium was demolished this year almost a decade after the Detroit Tigers opened Comerica Park. Many valuable remnants of the stadium were preserved by the Detroit Historical Society, which had possession of the scoreboard until its relocation to Wayne State. Tiger Stadium first opened on April 20, 1912, at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Trumbull Boulevard, less than two miles south of the WSU athletic campus. The scoreboard, installed in 1961, was originally placed at the 440 mark directly at center field, according to the Detroit Historical Society. It was later moved to far left field after many players complained that it was in the batter’s line of sight towards the pitcher. The City of Detroit and the Detroit Historical Society salvaged over 200 pieces of Tiger Stadium for preservation purposes in October 2007. The DHS and Wayne State Athletics were in discussions over the last 10 months regarding plans for the loan, transport, and installation of the scoreboard at WSU. The Wayne State University baseball program is entering its 70th season this spring. The facility underwent a substantial renovation in the summer of 2003 to create a replica of Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, around the perimeter of the outfield. Fenway, ironically, officially opened the same day as Tiger Stadium.

WSU Hosts Fall Letterwinners Reception The Wayne State Department of Athletics hosted the Fall 2009 First Year Letterwinners Reception on Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame Exhibit at the Matthaei Center. Athletic director Rob Fournier and football alum Scott Fisher (1980-83) addressed the student-athletes who were receiving their first varsity letter at Wayne State. Head coaches Rick Cummins, Phil Nickel, and Paul Winters, along with associate athletic director Jason Clark, were also on hand to present the varsity jackets to the letterwinners. Facility Updates New bleachers were installed on the south side of the Matthaei Aquatic Center in late January, just a few weeks prior to the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships. The bleachers seat 266 people, including 68 chairback seats. The steel construction of the bleachers provides a superior seating experience than that of their wooden predecessors.

The men’s varsity locker room at the Matthaei received an upgrade, as over 100 new lockers and cages were installed. These provide studentathletes with greater security over their possessions and equipment during practices and events. The lockers are utilized by nearly every men’s varsity team at Wayne State, including basketball, baseball, fencing, tennis, and swimming and diving.

The Wayne State baseball field will feature a piece of a historic Detroit landmark this season, as the left-field scoreboard from Tiger Stadium was installed on the Green Monster in left at WSU. The scoreboard was one of many fixtures in the now-demolished stadium preserved by the Detroit Historical Society. Tiger Stadium was located at Michigan and Trumbull, just a few miles south of the WSU athletic campus.

Facility Updates

WARRIOR WITHIN

Wayne State teams and individual student-athletes have worked hard to claim a great championships through the 92-plus years of WSU Athletics. Many of those trophies and awards are now on display in a new case installed just outside the natatorium at the Matthaei. Among the trophies visible are WSU’s national fencing championships, its swimming and diving conference titles, and Joique Bell’s Harlon Hill trophy.

Construction continues on the future outdoor ice rink, which is being installed over the old tennis courts on the athletic campus, just south of the baseball field. The boards have been erected, and some peripheral features are also being added, including a canopy for seating. Glass panes, as well as the ice surface itself, are to follow. This project has been made possible through Wayne State Athletics’ partnership with Pepsi.

Room 127 at the Matthaei, which includes the tennis and intramural offices, underwent a renovation recently creating more efficient workspace for coaches and graduate assistants. Once simply a large room with haphazardly placed office furnature and scattered equipment, the area has been redesigned to allow for more defined work stations and maintain a more functional atmosphere.

Warrior Club With over 400 student-athletes, the cost of managing a successful athletic program requires regular, private support. The Warrior Club creates that opportunity to direct a tax-deductible gift to assist your favorite program or the overall initiatives of the athletic department. In the past six years, Wayne State athletics has risen from 134th in the country in the National Athletic Directors’ Cup standings that rank all Division II programs, to an 11th-place finish in 2009, its highest ever. This accomplishment represents success for many teams – all of which must confront escalating costs, scholarship needs and facility improvements. Your support is instrumental to maintain that continued level of excellence and support today’s student-athletes. 9) -9 50 ($ S^ R IO 9) R R 24 A 0W 10 E ($ B TH ) F LU O 99 C S -4 'S D R 50 N E IE $2 N ( IN FR B U W L 9) C ER 99 TT 0LD O 50 LE G ($ D B N U A L 9) C N 49 -2 EE TY R SI 00 G 0 R 1 ($ VA B 9) LU 99 C -4 00 25 ($
