Head Coach 22nd season texas christian ‘85

Butch Lauffer beings his 22nd season as head men’s soccer coach at West Texas A&M University. During his tenure, Lauffer has coached the men to 19 consecutive winning seasons and the women to 12-plus victories in 12 seasons. Lauffer has recorded a 250-113-28 (.639) record at the helm of the Buffs with a 440-180-44 (.663) overall record at WT. In 1991, Lauffer organized a Division II soccer program in less than three months and in their first season he guided the Buffs to a 10-8-2 record; he has a 217-99-22 (.642) record over 18 seasons. The Buffaloes reached the NCAA Division II men’s soccer playoffs for the first time in 1997, losing to Cal State-Bakersfield in shootouts. The men made a return trip in 2000, and both the men’s and women’s teams qualified in 2001. The Buffs were ranked in each of their first 11 seasons. Lauffer was named NCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2001 and received the LSC Men’s Coach of the Year award in 1999 and 2000. Additionally, he was chosen as the Women’s LSC Coach of the Year in 1996 and 2001. Lauffer started the women’s program in 1996, leading them to a 12-4-0 finish and Lone Star Conference regular season title. Lauffer has several foreign and domestic coaching licenses, including an English Football Association’s preparatory coaching license (1982), the United States Soccer Federation “A” license (1987) and the Irish Football Association Grade 1 coaching license (1989). Most recently, he earned a United European Football Association “A” license from the Wales Football Association in 1998 and a UEFA pro license through the Scottish Football Association in 2001. During the 1994 World Cup, he became a member of the USSF National coaching staff. He assisted FIFA with the technical reports for all World Cup contests at the Dallas venue and taught coaching courses on developing coaching skills for the “A,” “B,” and “C” levels. In the summer of 2008, Lauffer lent his coaching talents to Trinidad and Tobago as he was an assistant

coach for the country’s Under-17 Women’s National Team. The field of competitors includes Canada, Mexico, USA, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. Lauffer joined the coaching staff of Randy Waldrum, of Notre Dame, as Trinidad and Tobago prepared to host the 2008 CONCACAF(Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) Women’s U-17 Championship. Lauffer, born in Washington, D.C., moved to Dallas at age seven and has played or coached soccer ever since. In his playing days, Lauffer competed for the Texas Longhorn Soccer Club; he logged over 100 international matches with them and was a member of the first American team to win a European Tournament - the Munich Cup - in 1978. Lauffer has written three soccer books about coaching and player development. His first book, Coaching Soccer, was published by Sterling Publishing Company in 1989. It was praised by Soccer Digest as a “gold mine of tips and advice from one of America’s greatest soccer experts.” The book was re-released in the fall of 2006. His second book, Soccer Coaches Guide to Skills, Drills and Technique Training, was released in the fall of 1991. His latest book, Techniques, Tactics and Teamwork for Women’s Soccer, was released by Sterling Publishing in the spring of 2001. He co-wrote it with April Kater, Syracuse University’s head women’s coach. In conjunction with Championship Productions, Lauffer has created two three-disc DVD sets describing how to implement various game tactics and coaching techniques. The first set, released in 2005, includes “The Complete Guide to the 3-5-2,” “Tactical Flexibility With the 4-2-3-1 System,” and “Attacking in the Final Third.” The second set, released in 2006, includes “Butch Lauffer’s Counter Attack System,” “Butch Lauffer’s Zone Play,” and “Butch Lauffer’s 12 Best Training Games.” Butch is also director of soccer for the Amarillo Drifters Soccer Association. Lauffer lives in Amarillo with his wife, Kimberly, and their two children, Kendall and Kyle. He also has a son, Blake, who lives in Hurst/Bedford.

the lone star conference Long known as a leader in intercollegiate athletics, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an innovative athletics conference which aims to provide a superior competitive experience for member institutions and to allow for comprehensive development of studentathletes through academic services and life skills programming. The LSC continues to build upon its proud history while intending to be recognized as the premier NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The league’s mission is to foster student participation and success among member institutions in Division II intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of each institution’s total educational program. The LSC strives for academic excellence, stresses involvement within the community, and prides itself in upholding traditions while continually seeking new opportunities to provide student-athletes with a unique and superior experience. The LSC - founded on April 25, 1931 has developed from a five-team conference of Texas-based schools to an 11-member league that spans three states (Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico). The conference membership recently changed with the departure of five Oklahoma schools following the 2010-11 academic year. The league continues to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate athletic programs that are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports. Throughout the league’s 80-year history, various institutions have competed under the LSC banner. Today, only Texas A&M University-Commerce (then East Texas State) remains from the original group that was

formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest Texas State, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin withdrew from the old Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The membership alignment has changed over the years, with current members having been added in each of the past six decades. Texas A&M-Kingsville (formerly Texas A&I) joined in 1954, followed by Angelo State in 1968 and Abilene Christian in 1973. Conference membership remained within the Texas borders until 1984 when Eastern New Mexico was admitted. Since then, the LSC has grown to include members from Arkansas and Oklahoma. Cameron (1988, 1996) was added near the outset of an expansion phase, while Texas Woman’s (1989) and previous members West Texas A&M (1986, 1993) and Tarleton State (1968, 1994) joined the league soon after. Midwestern State was admitted early in 1995, while the University of the Incarnate Word became the newest member in 2010. Past members of the LSC include Trinity, Houston, Lamar, Howard Payne, Sul Ross State, McMurry, Harding, Ouachita Baptist, Central Oklahoma, East Central (Okla.), Northeastern State (Okla.), Southeastern Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma. With a more streamlined membership in place, the LSC will do away with divisional formats during the 2011-12 athletic seasons. Dating back to the 1997-98 academic year, the league was formed into two divisions - North and South - in football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball. Volleyball and baseball returned to playing

without divisions in 2007-08, with football, basketball and softball set to go back to a one-conference model this year. While the LSC has maintained a longstanding tradition of competitive athletic programs for its members, many teams and individuals have gone on to distinguish themselves on the national stage. Entering 2011-12, LSC member institutions have collected 74 NCAA national championships since the league joined the Division II membership in 1982. Abilene Christian supplied the most recent additions to that total, capturing both the men’s indoor and outdoor track and field championships this past year. The LSC conducts conference championships in 16 sports (eight men and eight women). Men’s championships include football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, track and field, tennis and golf. Women’s titles are determined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, softball, track and field, tennis and golf. The conference office is located in Richardson, Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. Stan Wagnon serves as Commissioner, with assistance from Jay Poerner (Compliance) and Melanie Robotham (Media Relations).
