SCHAEFFER PARK West Texas A&M University is home to one of the finest Division II softball complexes in the nation. Lady Buff Yard is a state-of-the-art in every way and provides West Texas A&M softball players and coaches with an all-inclusive complex that includes locker rooms, meeting rooms, batting cages and one of the best playing surfaces anywhere in the country. “We are very fortunate to have the administrative support that we have” said Lady Buff head coach Kevin Blaskowski “With their support, we now get the opportunity to practice and play in one of the nicest softball facilities in collegiate softball. The Yard is definitely the nicest Division II facility in the country and it rivals most Division I facilities.” WT’s dream of a new, state-of-the-art softball complex became a reality when ground was broken in a ceremony in the winter of 2009. Construction workers worked continuously to complete the facility, which also competition fields for soccer, track and field and baseball along with tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, three intramural fields for flag football and slow-pitch softball and practice facilities for football, soccer and the WTAMU Marching Band. The result was the creation of one of the nation’s premier collegiate sports complexes. Lady Buff Yard which was completed in December of 2010, includes ticket and concession buildings and a spacious pressbox with radio/television booths. The home dugout is connected to the team’s clubhouse which consists of coaches’ offices, a laundry facility, a team meeting room and locker room.
“This is a great facility that has every amenity that you would want” said Blaskowski “It is a great playing surface with one of the best lighting systems available and it is a major plus to have our clubhouse, offices and laundry facility immediately accessible. I envision our players and staff spending a lot of down time just hanging out in the clubhouse. It is a beautiful facility.” The lighted facility is made completely of AstroTurf GameDay 3D synthetic turf with the combination of green and chocolate brown for a perfect looking
playing surface year-round. The stands feature 150 chair back seats for members of the Buffalo Club and season ticket holder and another 340 general admission seats for a total capacity of 490. “I think fans are going to love coming to games at The Yard” said Blaskowski “There is not a bad seat and fans will be able to see everything that happens on the field. The atmosphere will be one of the best ballpark atmospheres in the country.”

ABOUT THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE Formed more than 80 years ago, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) exists to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate athletics programs that are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports. Since its inception in 1931, the pursuit and attainment of academic excellence among student-athletes has been the priority for every member institution. However, in the wake of recent membership changes, the conference has developed an intentional focus on elevating its status to become the premier athletic conference in all of NCAA Division II. The LSC aims to provide a superior competitive experience for member institutions and to allow for comprehensive development of student-athletes through academic services and life skills programming. Formed with five charter members on April 23, 1931, the storied league continues to build upon its proud history. With 263 Academic All-Americans since 1990, 74 NCAA national championships since joining Division II in 1982, 44 legends enshrined into the LSC Hall of Honor, and a steady stream of high-profile NFL alumni, it’s clear to see why… We’re the One. The mission of the Lone Star Conference is to foster student participation and success among member institutions in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of each institution’s total educational program. The LSC strives for academic excellence, stresses involvement within the community, and prides itself in upholding traditions while continually seeking new opportunities to provide student-athletes with a unique and superior experience. We seek to celebrate the many accomplishments of LSC student-athletes. This includes the provision of awards programs for current student-athletes, as well as regular acknowledgement of the legendary figures that played for or coached LSC teams over the past 80 years. It also includes support for initiatives that promote success in academics and citizenship. After all, the student-athlete experience in Division II reaches beyond the playing field. It’s a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting, providing growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide LSC student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. Long known as a leader in intercollegiate athletics, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an innovative athletics conference which aims to provide a superior competitive experience for member institutions and to allow for comprehensive development of student-athletes through academic services and life skills programming. The LSC continues to build upon its proud history while intending to be recognized as the premier NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The league’s mission is to foster student participation and success among member institutions in Division II intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of each institution’s total educational program. The LSC strives for academic excellence, stresses involvement within the community, and prides itself in upholding traditions while continually seeking new opportunities to provide student-athletes with a unique and superior experience. Past members of the LSC include Trinity, Houston, Lamar, Howard Payne, Sul Ross State, McMurry, Harding, Ouachita Baptist, Central Oklahoma, East Central (Okla.), Northeastern State (Okla.), Southeastern Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma. While the LSC has maintained a long-standing tradition of competitive athletic programs for its members, many teams and individuals have gone on to distinguish themselves on the national stage. Entering 2012-13, LSC member institutions have collected 74 NCAA national championships since the league joined the Division II membership in 1982. The LSC conducts conference championships in 18 sports (nine men and nine women) with the addition of indoor track and field in 2012-13. Men’s championships include football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and golf. Women’s titles are determined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, softball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and golf. The conference office is located in Richardson, Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. Stan Wagnon serves as Commissioner, with assistance from Jay Poerner (Compliance) Melanie Robotham (Media Relations) and TBD (Marketing and Broadcasting).

Angelo State was picked to repeat as Lone Star Conference softball champions as the 2013 preseason poll was unveiled by league officials. ASU received 19 of the 26 first-place votes for a total of 251 points in the poll selected by LSC coaches, sports information directors and various media representatives. The Rambelles, who posted a 48-11 overall record in 2012 and made their eighth NCAA Division II regional appearance, won the league title for the sixth time last season. In addition to ASU being tabbed to repeat, the individual honorees were duplicated from last year’s preseason awards. Once again, Texas Woman’s junior Bailey Vrazel was named LSC Preseason Player of the Year. The shortstop from Danbury, Texas, started all 54 games last season for the Pioneers and led the team in batting average (.414), runs (61), walks (31), on-base percentage (.514) and stolen bases (75). For the second consecutive year, Vrazel led all collegiate softball players in steals and broke her own TWU and Lone Star Conference single-season record for stolen bases. She also set a new single-season school records in runs and walks. Incarnate Word’s Briana Sanchez claimed LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors for the second straight year. The senior from San Antonio, was named to the all-tournament team for her performance during the Cardinals tournament championship run last season. Sanchez was 17-11 in the circle with a 3.43 earned run average and 196 strikeouts in 202.1 innings last season. TWU was ranked second in the poll with five first-place mentions for 220 points. West Texas A&M was third with 181 points to edge Abilene Christian, who was fourth with one first-place nod and 176 points. UIW, the defending tournament champions, picked up the remaining first-place vote to share fifth place with Midwestern State with 151 points each. Tarleton State (134), Cameron (66), Texas A&M-Kingsville (55) and Eastern New Mexico (45) rounded out the poll. The 2013 season starts February 1 with LSC teams playing a single round-robin schedule with a three-game series against every other team. Each series shall consist of a doubleheader one day and single 7-inning game the other day. The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regularseason conference games, while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the league’s automatic qualification into NCAA postseason. The single-elimination championship will be played May 3-4-5, in Canyon, Texas as part of the LSC Spring Championships Festival.
