WE ARE WEST TEXAS. WE ARE WT. At West Texas A&M, high-level championship softball isn’t something that happens every now and then, it’s expected. The combination of great coaching, outstanding student-athletes, top-notch facilites and a high level of support have made Lady Buff Softball one of the premiere programs in all of NCAA Division II since its return to campus in the Spring of 2006. Over the past nine seasons under the guidance of Kevin Blaskowski, the Lady Buffs have won two Lone Star Conference Championships with four appearances in the NCAA Postseason including the program’s first NCAA Division II National Championship in 2014. Blaskowski, the 2014 NFCA Division II National Coach of the Year, holds an overall record of 320-219 in Canyon along with a 672-496 mark in his 22-year career. 2014 Dream Season
Making History
The Lady Buffs concluded a dream season on Memorial Day 2014 as they claimed the program’s first ever NCAA Division II National Championship in a 3-2 thrilling win over Valdosta State at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia.
The 2014 Lady Buffs finished the season with an overall record of 60-7 to become just the fourth team in NCAA Division II history to win a National Title while claiming 60 wins in a single season to join Cal State-Northridge (1985), Augustana (1991) and North Dakota State (2000).
Best In The Lone Star State Since the start of the 2010 campaign, West Texas A&M has owned the best winning-percentage by any Texas team in any level of NCAA softball with a mark of 234-74 (.760). HEAD COACH
10TH SEASON VALLEY CITY STATE ‘86 Having been hired to re-start West Texas A&M softball following a 24-year absence, Kevin Blaskowski has wasted little time in building the Lady Buffs into a perennial national title contender. In nine years at the helm, he has registered a 320219 mark, recorded four NCAA tournament berths and an overall record of 672-496 over 22 seasons. While at WT, Blaskowski has claimed a Lone Star Conference title, LSC Tournament Title, two South Central Regional Championships, a South Central Super Regional Title and the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship. 2014 saw the Lady Buffs capture the program’s first ever NCAA Division II National Championship as WT topped perennial power Valdosta State in a Memorial Day thriller at the Moyers Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia. The Lady Buffs finished their dream season with an overall record of 60-7, becoming just the fourth team in NCAA history to win a title while also reaching the 60win mark (Cal State Northridge-1985; Augustana-1991; North Dakota State-2000). Blaskowski and his staff were rewarded for their efforts on the diamond, being named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year while Coach B also picked up Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year accolades. Coach B reached another career milestone in 2013 as he claimed his 600th career victory against St. Edward’s in Austin, Texas on April 14th. The 2012 season saw the Lady Buffs make another appearance in the LSC Tournament before falling to rival Angelo State in the semifinal round, WT just missed out on the NCAA Postseason, finishing the season with an overall record of 35-18. Blaskowski reached a personal milestone on February 19, 2012 as he coached his 1,000th career game in a win over New Mexico Highlands in Canyon. The 2011 season saw the Lady Buffs make a historic run to their first ever South Central Regional Championship as they finished the season with an overall record of 50-18. WT claimed the program’s first ever Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship in 2011. Blaskowski also reached a personal milestone in 2011, claiming his 500th career victory on March 5 in a 15-2 win over Eastern New Mexico at Lady Buff Yard in Canyon, the win was also special for WT’s centerfielder Kim LeComte who hit for the first cycle in program history. The Lady Buffs finished the 2010 season with a 45-18 overall record and advanced to the NCAA South Central Region Finals. Blaskowski was honored as the Lone Star Conference South Division Coach of the Year. Blaskowski was hired in December of 2004 to bring back the softball program to WTAMU’s campus after a 24 year absence. Blaskowski came to WT from Lone Star Conference rival Eastern New Mexico University where he served as the head coach for one year. In 2003, SAU was the Co-Champion of the West Division in the Gulf South Conference with a 31-19 overall record and a 19-4 conference mark.
While at Southern Arkansas, Blaskowski’s teams also excelled in the classroom as they finished in the top ten in the NFCA Team GPA Rankings his last four years. SAU was ranked in the Top 10 of the team grade point average rankings in 1999-00 (5th), 2000-01 (7th), 2001-02 (8th), and 2002-03 (7th). While at SAU, Blaskowski served as a member of the NCAA Division II South Region rating committee in addition to being named Gulf South Conference Co-Coach of the Year in 2000. Blaskowski also has served as the head coach at Phillips University from 1996-1998. He started the program at Phillips which qualified for postseason play in each of its two seasons before the school closed in 1998. THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE Long known as a leader in intercollegiate athletics, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an innovative athletics conference that aims to provide a superior competitive experience for member institutions and to allow for comprehensive development of student-athletes through academic services and life skills programming. The LSC continues to build upon its proud history while intending to be recognized as the premier NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The league’s mission is to provide comprehensive student-athlete experiences in high-level athletic competition, with particular dedication to student-athlete development, graduation success, sportsmanship, ethical conduct, community engagement, and expanding opportunities. The LSC - founded on April 25, 1931 - has developed from a five-team conference of Texas-based schools to a nine-member league that spans three states (Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico). The league continues to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate athletic programs that are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports. Throughout the league’s 83-year history, various institutions have competed under the LSC banner. Today, only Texas A&M University-Commerce (then East Texas State) remains from the original group that was formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest Texas State, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin withdrew from the old Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The membership alignment has changed over the years, with current members having been added from 1954 to 1995. Texas A&M-Kingsville (formerly Texas A&I) joined in 1954, and Angelo State in 1968. Conference membership remained within the Texas borders until 1984 when Eastern New Mexico was admitted. Since then, the LSC has included members from Arkansas and Oklahoma. Cameron (1988, 1996) was added near the outset of an expansion phase, while Texas Woman’s (1989) and previous members West Texas A&M (1986, 1993) and Tarleton State (1968, 1994) joined the league soon after. Midwestern State was admitted early in 1995, while Harding reconnected with the league as an affiliate member in track and field in 2013. In 2014, McMurry returned as an affiliate member in indoor and outdoor track and field, and football. Past members of the LSC include Trinity, Houston, Lamar, Howard Payne, Sul Ross State, McMurry, Harding, Ouachita Baptist, Central Oklahoma, East Central (Okla.), Northeastern State (Okla.), Southeastern Oklahoma, Southwestern Oklahoma, Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word. While the LSC has maintained a long-standing tradition of competitive athletic programs for its members, many teams and individuals have gone on to distinguish themselves on the national stage. Entering 2014-15, LSC member institutions have collected 75 NCAA national championships since the league joined the Division II membership in 1982. West Texas A&M supplied the most recent addition to that total by claiming the softball championship this past spring. The LSC conducts conference championships in 16 sports (seven men and nine women). Men’s championships include football, cross country, basketball, baseball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and golf. Women’s titles are determined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, softball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and golf. The conference office is located in Richardson, Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. Stan Wagnon serves as Commissioner, with assistance from Jay Poerner (Compliance) and Melanie Robotham (Media Relations).
