SCHAEFFER PARK
WELCOME TO SCHAEFFER PARK
West Texas A&M University is home to one of the finest Division II softball complexes in the nation. Schaeffer Park is a state-of-the-art in every way and provides West Texas A&M softball players and coaches with an all-inclusive complex that includes locker rooms, meeting rooms, batting cages and one of the best playing surfaces anywhere in the country. “We are very fortunate to have the administrative support that we have” said Lady Buff head coach Kevin Blaskowski “With their support, we now get the opportunity to practice and play in one of the nicest softball facilities in collegiate softball. Schaeffer Park is definitely one of the nicest Division II facility in the country and it rivals most Division I facilities.” WT’s dream of a new, state-of-the-art softball complex became a reality when ground was broken in a ceremony in the winter of 2009. Construction workers worked continuously to complete the facility, which also competition fields for soccer, track and field and baseball along with tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, three intramural fields for flag football and slow-pitch softball and practice facilities for football, soccer and the WTAMU Marching Band. The result was the creation of one of the nation’s premier collegiate sports complexes. Schaeffer Park, formerly Lady Buff Yard, was completed in December of 2010 and it includes ticket and concession buildings and a spacious pressbox with radio/television booths. The home dugout is connected to the team’s clubhouse which consists of coaches’ offices, a laundry facility, a team meeting room and locker room.

“This is a great facility that has every amenity that you would want” said Blaskowski “It is a great playing surface with one of the best lighting systems available and it is a major plus to have our clubhouse, offices and laundry facility immediately accessible. Our players and staff spend a lot of down time just hanging out in the clubhouse and it it a perfect setup for the camp we hold throughout the year. It is a beautiful facility.” The lighted facility is made completely of AstroTurf GameDay 3D synthetic turf with the combination of green and chocolate brown for a perfect looking playing surface year-round. The stands feature 235 chair back seats for members of the Buffalo Club and season ticket holder and another 300 general admission seats for a total capacity of 535.

THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE
36
Long known as a leader in intercollegiate athletics, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an innovative athletics conference that aims to provide a superior competitive experience for member institutions and to allow for comprehensive development of student-athletes through academic services and life skills programming. The LSC continues to build upon its proud history while intending to be recognized as the premier NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The mission of the Lone Star Conference is to foster student participation and success among member institutions in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of each institution’s total educational program. The LSC shall pursue student-athlete development with highest regard to the principles of academic excellence, sportsmanship, ethical conduct, resourcefulness, community service, gender equity, and diversity. The LSC - founded on April 25, 1931 - has developed from a five-team conference of Texas-based schools to a nine-member league that spans three states (Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico). The league continues to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate athletic programs that are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports. Throughout the league’s 84-year history, various institutions have competed under the LSC banner. Today, only Texas A&M University-Commerce (then East Texas State) remains from the original group that was formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest Texas State, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin withdrew from the old Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The membership alignment has changed over the years, with current members added from 1954 to 1995. Texas A&M-Kingsville (formerly Texas A&I) joined in 1954, and Angelo State in 1968. Conference membership remained within the Texas borders until 1984 when Eastern New Mexico was admitted. Since then, the LSC has included members from Arkansas and Oklahoma. Cameron (1988, 1996) was added near the outset of an expansion phase, while Texas Woman’s (1989) and previous members West Texas A&M (1986, 1993) and Tarleton State (1968, 1994) joined the league soon after. Midwestern State was admitted early in 1995, while Incarnate Word joined the league in 2010. Harding reconnected with the league as an affiliate member in track and field from 2013-15, and McMurry was an affiliate member in indoor and outdoor track and field, and football in 2014. The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB) and Western New Mexico (WNMU) will become full conference members on July 1, 2016, and Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) will become an affiliate member in football on that same date. While the LSC has maintained a long-standing tradition of competitive athletic programs for its members, many teams and individuals have gone on to distinguish themselves on the national stage.

The 2014 campaign saw the Lady Buffs re-write the program and Lone Star Conference record books as WT set seven new individual or team LSC marks along with way. Alyssa Lemos became the alltime league leader in runs scored (251) and walks (179), the 251 runs is 3rd all-time in NCAA Division II history while the senior shortstop holds the NCAA career record in walks. As a team, the Lady Buffs broke the Lone Star Conference single-season records in runs (554), doubles (133), homeruns (105) and RBI (502) while also breaking the Lone Star Conference single season record for wins with 60. WT’s 554 runs scored ranks third all-time in the NCAA record books while the 133 doubles is third all-time and the 105 homeruns is third all-time. Renee Erwin, the Daktronics Ron Lenz Player of the Year, broke the LSC record for runs scored (81) in a single season, which is fifth all-time in NCAA history, while also tying the league’s single season record for total bases with 175. The Lady Buffs led all of Division II softball in win-loss percentage (.896), slugging percentage (.635) and on-base percentage (.462). (#1) WT 8, (#20) LIU-POST 1 The Lady Buffs used their team speed on the basepaths to take the early lead as Tyler Wilkinson walked and stole second base as an errant Pioneers throw into center field allowed the junior to race to and round third base with an LIU-Post bobble in the infield scored Wilkinson for the early 1-0 lead with one out. Renee Erwin registered a walk followed by a Kaisha Dacosin RBI double to the right center field gap to give WT the early 2-0 lead. The Lady Buffs broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning as they plated five runs on two hits with two Pioneer errors, the inning was highlighted by anAllie Cranfill three run double to right field with the bases loaded and two outs to score Erwin, Dacosin and Jessica Sipe as WT ran their lead to 7-0 after four complete innings of play. WT added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as Cranfill drove in her fourth RBI of
the game with one out and runner on second and third as the junior infielder layed down a bunt to score Erwin from third base with WT headed to the seventh inning with the 8-1 lead. The top of the seventh inning saw Hokianga force a groundout to Sipe at the hot corner followed by a Pioneers infield single to put a runner on first with one out, the Lady Buffs committed their first error of the game with a misplayed ground ball at second base before Lemos registered the second out with an infield fly to short followed by a flyout to Wilkinson in center field to pick up the 8-1 victory. Hokianga moved to 26-3 on the season, giving up one run on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts in the complete game victory. (#1) WT 6, (#19) ARMSTRONG 5 The Pirates wasted no time scoring in the top of the first inning as Alexis Mercer to deep right center field to leadoff the inning, Armstrong wasn’t done yet as they put runners on the corners with no outs before Hannah Newcomb registered the first out of the game via the strikeout. The Pirates drove in another run with a Hannah Reppert groundout to Jessica Sipe at the hot corner for the 2-0 lead. Alyssa Lemos and Tyler Wilkinson made up for early errors in the field as they both reached base to start the bottom of the first inning before Renee Erwin gave the Lady Buffs the lead with a three run blast down the right field line the opposite way to give WT the 3-2 lead with no outs. WT loaded the bases with three straight walks to Allie Cranfill, Mallory Wyatt and Lacey Taylor with two outs before Armstrong made a diving stop in the hole between first and second to end the inning with the Lady Buffs leading 3-2. Armstrong threatened in the top of the third inning as a leadoff single followed by a single and a WT error to put runners on second and third with one out followed by an RBI groundout to Gehle at second base by Reppert to tie the game at 3-3.
WT wasted no time re-taking the lead as Sipe reached first via a Pirates error in the outfield to leadoff the inning followed by a strikeout and a Wyatt double down the right field line to put runners on second and third with one out, Taylor gave WT the lead with an RBI groundout to first base as Sipe scored from third to move the score to 4-3 in favor of the Lady Buffs. The Pirates retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning as the defensive miscues continued for the Lady Buffs as an infield error, WT’s fourth of the game, with one out put a runner on first base for Mercer who connected on her second long ball of the game to run the Armstrong lead to 5-4. The bottom of the sixth inning saw Gehle lace a line drive to the right center field gap as the Pirates were unable to come up with the catch, Lemos grounded out to the circle to move Gehle into scoring position with one out before a Wilkinson single to right field put runners on the corners with just one out. Erwin drew her third walk of the game to load the bases followed by a big AASU strikeout by Ollivia McLemore before Sipe came up with the big hit as the senior looped a ball over the third baseman’s head that just stayed fair to drive in a pair of runs to give the Lady Buffs the 6-5 lead headed to the seventh inning. The top of the seventh inning saw the Pirates launch the first pitch of the frame deep to center field as Wilkinson made the grab at the wall in left center followed by Hokianga registering her fourth strikeout of the game for the second out, the junior lefty walked Ellis who doubled earlier in the game to bring her sister Heather Ellis to the plate as the sophomore struck out swinging to end the game as WT took the 6-5 win.
