Record number of passengers to visit Caribbean

NCL introduces three new Grammy Experience acts Norwegian Cruise Line has revealed three new acts set to perform aboard

the Norwegian Getaway as part of the

Grammy Experience at Sea. The artists The Caribbean has been a mainstay of cruising for decades and there’s no sign of its popularity slowing down. In fact, the idyllic shores of this iconic region are due for a record number of cruise ship passengers sailing their way to the Caribbean – over 9 million of them, in fact.

Even with the fierce competition which comes from a global cruising market, the Caribbean has repeatedly won out as a favourite for cruisers. Despite the burgeoning popularity of other regions like the Mediterranean, the Caribbean it seems is due to be blessed with fervent popularity for years to come.

Royal Princess to feature in ITV Documentary Princess Cruises has announced that the Royal Princess, one of its flagship vessels, is to feature in a four-part documentary on ITV this summer. The Cruise Ship is set to follow crew members on-board the 3,600 passenger ship as they sail around the Caribbean, taking a behind the scenes look at everything from preparing master suites to arranging the welcome party. Paul Ludlow, Princess Cruises’ managing director for UK and Europe, spoke highly of the fly-on-the-wall documentary: “Even our most travelled guests will be amazed at just how much hard work goes into making sure our ships run smoothly. We’re so proud of everything Princess Cruises has to offer and can’t wait for television viewers to see this for themselves.” Check out our fantastic Princess Cruises offers on page 37.

Cunard Line to welcome Hollywood director aboard Cunard Line has announced that award-

winning film director Wes Anderson will sail aboard the Queen Mary 2 during her transatlantic voyage on 13th June 2014.

Anderson – whose films include The

Royal Tenenbaums and The Grand

Budapest Hotel –

will participate in

special screenings

and Q&A sessions

with passengers in

the ship’s Royal Court Theatre, alongside Academy Award-winning actress Tilda Swinton, screenwriter Roman Coppola and actor Jason Schwartzman.

Cunard Line CEO David Dingle

commented on the announcement,

saying: “Mr Anderson has many fans

among Cunard guests and we know they will jump at this unique opportunity to

enjoy his films, and spend time with him and his wonderful collaborators.”

Turn to page 61 to see our Cunard offers.

Malachi, known for her unique brand of spoken word jazz-fusion hip hop, will entertain guests from 15th June to the

1st August, whilst Roddie Romero will

follow Malachi, taking to the stage from 2nd August up until 30th August 2014. See page 16 for our top NCL offers.

World's best restaurant moves country Renowned chef and restaurateur Rene

Redzepi has announced that his acclaimed restaurant Noma – recently voted as

world’s best – will move from Baltics

cruise favourite Copenhagen to enjoy a

two-month residency in Japan’s bustling capital and Far East voyage mainstay,

Tokyo at the beginning on 2015. Redzepi

claims that the famous restaurant, which draws thousands of booking requests every week, will start from scratch in

terms of ingredients in its new location. In a post on the Noma website, Redzepi commented: “Although our entire staff will move to Tokyo, we’ll leave our

ingredients at home. Rather we’ll bring

our mind-set and sensibilities to the best of pristine winter produce from all over Japan.”

INSIDE CRUISE

A great year for cruising Each issue on these pages, we like to share with you some of the most interesting news from the cruising world, whether that’s the latest on new ships, new itineraries, new entertainment programs, new suites or new menus. As we mentioned in our lead news story last issue, the number of people cruising last year increased significantly and the global number of cruise passengers is set to reach 21.7 million this year. Clearly, the big news story continues to be this growth, so this issue, we’re going to take a closer look at that growth and importantly, the positive impact it’s having on cruising from the UK. by Simon Brotherton P&O Britannia hull

final block has been placed on the first of the line’s awesome new Quantum

her maiden voyage on November 2 this year. Its great news for UK cruisers, as

though the ship’s home ports are set to

ship makes a classic transatlantic journey.

Work continues too on the Quantum’s first sister ship, Anthem of the Seas, which is due to set sail in April 2015.

Again, its good news for those sailing from home shores, as Southampton is set to

INSIDE CRUISE Princess Cruises The biggest news for Princess Cruises

so far this year was the recent launch of their brand-new vessel, Regal Princess.

20th May saw the sister ship to the line’s Royal Princess take to the ocean waves on her maiden voyage – a seven-day

Mediterranean voyage from Venice to

Athens. Catering for 3,560 passengers,

this feature-packed vessel will feature a

host of the spectacular innovations which made their debut on Royal Princess, such

as the shimmering centrepiece the Princess Atrium, the glass-bottomed Seawalk

viewing platform and the palatial Princess Theater.

Michael’s Club VIP Lounge

Many major cruise lines opt for refits and refurbishments to keep their fleets updated with the latest attractions. Some ships have been sailing the world for years but regular sessions in dry dock make sure that they’re offering cruise-lovers a thoroughly modern experience. It’s often a chance to rejuvenate much-loved ships, and depending on the kind of work done in dry dock, they can even end up looking like new ships entirely – but they still keep the same crew and the same atmosphere on-board that experienced cruisers go back for. by Andrew Hall

SHIP REVIEW Accommodation The Seabourn Quest is one of only a few

ships in the cruise industry to offer all-suite

accommodation, 90 per cent of which comes with its own private veranda – the perfect place to relax and observe the spectacular passing ocean views. A multitude of suite

categories are available to book aboard the

Seabourn Quest, from the comfortable Ocean View suites, which feature a large picture window, to lavish Wintergarden suites,

packed with fantastic amenities and providing over 1000 square feet of living space.

We opted for a Veranda suite on our voyage and we were truly impressed by what

we found once we crossed the threshold. Everything about the suite was ideal. It

offered plenty of space and had a distinctly contemporary, yet utterly luxurious feel.

All of the in-room amenities seem to have been placed with us in mind. There was a

large flat-screen television with all the latest movies and music, an iPod docking station

so we could play our favourite music as we got ready in the mornings and a fabulous

queen-sized bed – perfect for a good night’s sleep after an exciting but tiring day at sea. Our bathroom was also more than we had expected, equipped with a large bath and shower alongside a huge double sink.

It was the little touches, however, that made our stay in the Veranda Suite feel really

special. We had only been in our room for

SHIP REVIEW Suite Types Wintergarden Suite Covering an area of approximately 1097 square feet, this is the largest and most luxurious suite on-board. Not only does this suite offer plenty of space, including dining space for six, it also boasts a glassenclosed solarium with tub and day bed in which to truly relax. Other opulent amenities include a private veranda, whirlpool bathtub, pantry with wet bar and two flat-screen televisions.

Signature Suite This expansive suite features large forwardfacing windows from which to observe spectacular ocean-views. With dining space for four to six people, your whole party can enjoy the passing scenery while they eat. A host of Seabourn’s other amenities are also included to create a wonderful living space.

could help ourselves to as many or as few courses as we pleased.

Often sequels are never as good as the originals, but this was definitely not

the case when it came to the Restaurant 2. This unique dining venue offered something a little different from the norm, in the form of a seven-course

tasting menu bursting with flavourful options. Although there is no extra charge to dine here, be aware that seating is limited, so make your

reservations as early as possible. We also took advantage of the ship’s in-suite dining service one morning,

ordering fresh coffee, juice and breakfast from our room service menu. Before we knew it our order had arrived and the

vessel’s friendly wait staff had laid out a table for us, so we could enjoy our meal in a more private setting. 

The Silversea Difference

Mike Bonner Silversea

A popular choice with many cruisers who book their holiday with Six Star Cruises is Silversea, so I caught up with the line’s Managing Director Mike Bonner to find out more about what makes the line so special, its forthcoming vessel, and where you should definitely not dive without the aid of a wetsuit. by Simon Brotherton Could you tell us a little about your background and how you got involved with Silversea? I originally joined Silversea back in 1999 in the early days of the company, working in

the marketing department. I left in 2006 to

pursue an opportunity in the hotel industry, however, the call of the ocean was never

far away and I re-joined Silversea late 2011 as General Manager for the UK & Ireland. During the five years I was away much

had changed, including the launch of Silver Spirit and the introduction of Silversea Expeditions.

Why did you make the decision to launch Silversea Expeditions? Expedition cruising has been around since

the 1960s but was always defined by ships with relatively basic accommodation,

standards of cuisine and service. However, our Chairman Dott. Manfredi Lefebvre, realised that there we plenty of people in the world who wanted to sail to the

world’s last undiscovered wildernesses or

experience places in a manner sympathetic

fleet sailing to faraway places such as the Arctic, Antarctic, Galapagos, West Africa and Pacific.

Why should a seasoned Six Star Cruises traveller give a Silversea Expeditions voyage a try? Regular cruisers are often looking

for something new when it comes to

destinations, so with our expedition fleet, we are able to access other parts of the world that we are unable to visit with

our classic fleet – remote and untouched places including Antarctica, the Russian

Far East, the fabled North West Passage or

the stunning Kimberley coast of northwest Australia. The expedition cruise itself is different to a regular cruise – there is a

greater level of active participation if you are to get the most out of the holiday but

the rewards can be thrilling. Our regular cruise guests can of course expect many

of the hallmark services and facilities that we offer on our classic fleet ships, such as

all-suite accommodation, butler service and our all-inclusive value.

Silver Discover is the latest addition to our

levels of comfort that were not available at launched in 2008 to provide an authentic expedition experience but with all the

expedition fleet and entered service on

April 2nd. At just 5,218 tonnes, like her

sister ships, she is a small intimate vessel that is perfect for charting the waters in

which she will operate. She is a purposebuilt expedition ship carrying no more

than 120 guests in all suite accommodation.

Silver Discoverer will be based year-round in the Pacific sailing on itineraries as far

north as the Russian Far East, all the way

down to the New Zealand Sub-Antarctic. In between, she will sail to Southeast

Asia (including Malaysian Borneo and

Western Papua); spend time in Australia’s stunning Kimberley region which is

mostly accessible by sea and discover the indigenous tribes and ancient cultures of Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia.

You recently visited Antarctica on-board one of your ships. Could you tell us a little about it? The chance to sail to the seventh continent

was the opportunity of a lifetime that I will never forget. The sense of excitement on-

board - before you even set sail - is palpable so you can imagine the atmosphere

when the expedition leader makes the

announcement: “Ladies and gentleman, if you would like to go out on deck, we have our first sight of icebergs ahead.”

DESTINATION FOCUS Baltics The incredible thing about cruising the Baltics is the diversity involved – in the space of a single

voyage around this spectacular region, you can

find yourself pursuing the Aurora Borealis on the wintry shores of Iceland, visiting the historical splendour of St Petersburg and touring the medieval townships of Estonia.

Although central Europe tends to attract more tourists, it can work in your favour that the

Baltics region is overlooked and underrated by many. Even during the summer season you’re

unlikely to find yourself having to fight through crowds to get to grips with everything that the Baltics has to offer.

Sailing from the UK to this collection of intriguing states is a completely stress-free prospect, made

all the more alluring by the fact that many Baltic destinations are wonderful place to visit all

year round. Even in the midst of winter, there is an otherworldly mystique to these Baltic destinations.

Saaremaa Island, Estonia

It’s when the weather is at its frostiest that ports can be a scintillating as summertime in the

Mediterranean. The gorgeous tree-lined expanses of the Finnish countryside contrast beautifully

with the stone architecture of Tallinn, a patchwork of spires and towers capped by pure, white snow. The ports of Reykjavík and Stockholm present a flurry of cultural highlights such as the Laugardalur (Hot Spring) Valley and the

outstanding Vasa museum, home to the only preserved 17th-century ship in the world.

Throughout the changing seasons, the timeless attractions of the Baltics are a constant that travellers simply can’t afford to miss. 

“Don’t you have a family or someone who would want to go with you?” I asked,

For various reasons she didn’t and she went ahead and booked. How brave, I thought.

Well, I did warn readers that my thoughts

on solo cruising were patronising. Around the same time, the editorial team at Cruise

Concierge received an email complimenting us on the magazine, but rightly, bemoaning

the absence of articles for solo cruisers. This article is an attempt to rebalance our focus. The issue, for me, is that I cruise with

Charlie as a couple or in a group with other couples. So, I am looking to readers who

are solo cruisers to respond to the outcomes of my research so that other readers can

be more informed about the pleasures and pitfalls of going it alone.

Regular readers will know that I ask

around wherever I go to get opinions

and comments about different aspects

of cruising. The WI, my writing group, painting class, friends, relatives and

neighbours are all quizzed. Reader, I can hear your doubts about my sampling

techniques. However, recent discussions

were informative and thought-provoking. A friend who is considering booking but

has yet to satisfy his doubts raised issues

that experienced solo cruisers might help to answer. 

Meet

the Cruise Concierge

As we’ve reported earlier in the issue and as you’ll see as you read some of our features on new lines and vessels, the cruise industry is ever-expanding whether that be all-new ships, large-scale refurbishments, even completely new river cruise lines. To ensure we’re at the forefront of this excursion, we’re expanding too, so with that in mind, this issue, we’d like to introduce you to three of our newest Cruise Concierge, so you can find out a little more about them. Which brands do you sell?

I sell on Cruise118.com

Where in the world would you most like to explore by cruise ship?

I’d love to do the fjords by cruise. On holiday, I usually opt for warm weather and sunbathing but I think I’d brave the colder climates for the chance to take in the stunning scenery and experience to culture on land. I haven’t yet had a chance to sample any of the smaller ships, so I’d like to give that a try too.

What’s your favourite holiday destination you’ve visited so far?

My favourite place would Heather Thomas have to be either Florence or Santorini. Both are beautiful and are perfect, whether you like exploring or long lazy days in the sunshine.

Tell us a little about yourself, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I have a keen interest in interior design and love making the ideas I’ve sketched out and searching for inspiration for new designs. I also really enjoy long walks with my dog and boyfriend. Other than that, shopping and cocktails with friends on my days off are a must!

Where in the world would you most like to explore by cruise ship?

The Norwegian Fjords and the Baltics – I’ve been dying to go to Copenhagen for years. Couple it with some fjordland and it’d be holiday Heaven for me.

What’s your favourite holiday destination you’ve visited so far? I absolutely loved Thailand – amazing food and amazing culture!

SixStarCruises.co.uk and Cruise118.com

South East Asia - everywhere and anywhere but especially Burma and Cambodia. I’ve spent about a year altogether in the region over the last 10 years – it’s a bit of an obsession of mine.

Tell us a little about yourself, what do you like to do in your spare time? I spend most of my free time travelling when I can and getting as far away from home as I can, and getting under the skin of new places. I love my photography, so I’m often armed with my trusty Canon in hand. After that, you’ll generally find me eating my way across the city, or drinking too many cocktails in the Northern Quarter in Manchester, where I live.

RIVER VOYAGES It is here that subtle innovations make

a huge difference to what have become

standard features for river cruisers. The

open-air terrace restaurants at the bow of each ship re-invigorate al-fresco dining,

while the accommodation on-board sets a

new standard in river cruising – each cabin has superb, sleek decoration throughout, and that’s not all – balcony and owner’s

suites even feature drop-down windows which work with the push of a button.

Amidst all the innovation are convenient features which improve the passenger

experience no end. The main dining room

Scenic Crystal

has multiple stations serving up world-

class cuisine from a multitude of regions,

the sun deck features a pop-up bar which

offers cocktails whenever you wish, and the aforementioned swimming pool even has a retractable roof.

In no uncertain terms, this all-new

cruise line is setting out to cater for each individual passenger in a way which

the river cruising public can hardly have expected. Whether it’s the huge amount of space which is a hallmark of the

accommodation, or the heated loungers

in the pool area, Emerald Waterways are

determined to innovate river cruise ships for the better, while retaining the classic style of sailing the world’s waterways.

Scenic Tours With a range of exciting itineraries now available to book on

RiverVoyages.com, Scenic Tours is set to become a new icon of river cruising and

selection of experiences to choose from.

What to wear The question of what clothes we should pack when we go on holiday is an eternal one. What with baggage weight restrictions, space and the weather, there’s a lot to think about. As far as what to wear on a cruise, we need to think about what we’re going to wear on our shore excursions, by the pool and of course, how to impress when dressing for dinner on that all-important formal night.

Marvel's Avengers to slog it out in Seoul Following a mammoth clash with interstellar interlopers in the streets of New York, our favourite Marvel comic book characters recently headed to the

South Korean capital Seoul to film scenes for the sequel to 2012’s blockbuster Avengers Assemble. Filming on Avengers Age of Ultron, which is slated for a summer 2015 release, has begun and has already seen the ensemble cast

filming in South Africa and London. Rumour has it that the location list is only set to grow, with the USA and Italy also reportedly on director Joss

Whedon’s radar. The film sees the return of the stellar cast which includes the likes of as Robert Downey Junior as Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth as Thor, with James Spader taking on the role of the Avengers’ arch-nemesis, Ultron. Seoul is a popular excursion on Far East cruises which visit Korea and is served by the port of Incheon.
