The latest news in the big wide world of cruise
Fred Olsen's Caribbean fly cruise
In a sign that things may be taking off again for its would-be Caribbean flycruisers, Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines has recently announced that it intends to re-launch its fly-cruising programme at the start of 2015.
ROYAL TO KEEP IT QUANTUM Royal Caribbean has announced that three new Quantum-Class ships are to be built, the first of which is the Quantum of the
Seas which is due to launch in November 2014, sailing from New Jersey.
Two of the major new features will be the North Star, a viewing pod that extends
out to sea, and the RipCord by iFly, a glass skydiving wind tunnel situated on deck and allowing guests to get the thrill of a
skydive without having to fly thousands
of feet up in a plane. Another ‘first-time-atsea’ feature is the SeaPlex, a large indoor
space which will include roller skating and dodgems.
Elsewhere, work has begun on Royal
Caribbean’s third Oasis-class ship, with confirmation that when she launches in

be revealed, so for now it’s simply being referred to as Oasis 3.

Bringing Cruising to the Heart of London
It looks as though London itself might be getting a new cruise terminal, after the chair of Cruise Britain was appointed to deliver one by 2016. Katie O’Hara has been tasked with overseeing the development of the London Cruise Port which will be located at Enderby Wharf in Royal Greenwich, giving passengers fantastic access as they step off right in the city centre, with major attractions all within easy reach. It’s anticipated that the cruise terminal will be ready for the start of the 2016 season, and that it will be used by up to 100 ships every year, with a capacity for 3,000 passengers at any one time in the land part of the terminal. NCL’s plan is still under development premium cruise destination which will
utilise each island differently. One will be an area offering docking and tendering facilities; the other will be a connection point for mainland tours. Plans for the islands include a floating pier, marina,

development is to authentically reflect the culture nature and history of Belize. 6 I
Cruise Bill of Rights The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), representative for 25 major cruise lines, has announced that the industry is to adopt a passenger bill of rights to give guests on-board a set of guarantees to ensure the safety, comfort and care of everyone on-board. This comes after a set of demands from US Senator Charles Schumer, who had stated that the cruise industry needed to offer a guarantee for passengers to protect minimum standards, for example, ensuring during a power failure that sanitary conditions, medical care and back-up power were all available, along with refunds.

Regatta, Insignia and Nautica are set to receive a $50 million makeover over the course of six weeks, when a number of public areas and the ships’ suites and staterooms will be extensively redecorated to make them more in keeping with Marina and Riviera; Oceania’s newest vessels.
Disney Magic makes it Marvel The Disney Magic, oldest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, has just undergone a refurbishment. New features include the Marvel Avengers Academy, an area where children can become superhero recruits and enjoy props from the films, and the thrilling AquaDunk waterslide. Andy’s Room, a themed Toy Story area
already found on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, has also been added, while various additions and tweaks have also been made to the dining facilities and the staterooms, including a complete revamp of the Animator’s Palace restaurant. There’s also a new Irish pub and sports bar for adults to enjoy.

Carnival Cruise Line’s President and Chief Executive Officer Gerry Cahill recently revealed the name for what is to be the line’s 25th cruise ship, due to hit the ocean waves in the winter of 2016. Carnival Vista, as the 135,000 GT ship will be known, will cater for 4,000 passengers and will feature the line’s ‘Fun Ship 2.0’ enhancements, in which it added many new bars, restaurants and entertainment features to many of its existing ships. It will be Carnival’s newest vessel since the Carnival Breeze first set sail in September, 2009. The three key areas of development for the ship will be dining, entertainment and kids’ clubs. You’ll have to wait until February 2016 to get a look at Holland America Line’s latest vessel, which it turns out literally will be in a class of its own. The as yet un-christened ship will be the line’s first Pinnacle Class vessel, joining the Rotterdam, Vista and Signature Class ships and the line’s ms Prinsendam exploration vessel on the ocean waves. At 100,000 tons and catering for 2,660 passengers, she’ll be the largest Holland America Line vessel yet and will also boast a width of 35 metres, as opposed to the current largest of 32.4. Regent Seven Seas Cruises has recently announced that it is building a brand-new, allsuite, all-balcony ship to launch in 2016 named the Seven Seas Explorer. At 54,000 tons, the Seven Seas Explorer will be the largest ship in the line’s fleet but will have a capacity of just 738 guests. This results in a spacious ship with one of the best staff-to-guest ratios, ensuring exceptionally high standards of cruising. The ship will cost around £300m to build and will increase the total passenger capacity of the fleet by almost 40 per cent, making Regent the biggest luxury cruise fleet in the world.

Hot on the heels of the announcement that it plans to launch a new ‘Breakaway Plus’ cruise ship in October 2015, Norwegian Cruise Line has just revealed plans for a second one in the spring of 2017. Like her sister vessel, the ship will weigh in at around 163,000 gross tons and cater for 4,200 passengers, making them the largest vessels in the NCL fleet. The new vessel will continue the flurry of new ship activity for the line, which started earlier this year with the delivery of the 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway, and which will continue with the delivery of her sister ship the Norwegian Getaway in January 2014. Compagnie du Ponant has signed a deal with the famous ship-building yard Fincantieri for the building of a new Boreal-class cruise ship, which is due to launch in the Spring of 2015. The specifications of the ship will be exactly the same as her sister ships in the Boreal class: Le Soleal, the Boreal and L’Austral. This means it will be able to accommodate up to 264 passengers in 132 cabins, all of which will have a view of the ocean and 95 per cent of which will have a private balcony. The ship will be staffed by a crew of 140.

Dining Warning: You won’t lose weight on this holiday! The choice, locations and quality of food on-board
was excellent. The food in the main Opus Dining
Room was exceptional each time we dined there. There was a great choice of appetisers, soups/
salads, main course and dessert, with a vast list of wines from around the world. Fortunately, with all those courses, the portion sizes are reasonable not over-facing! Our booking was on a Select Dining basis, the idea being that you are not tied to early (6.30pm) or late (8.30pm) dining.
In real terms, whilst this provides some flexibility you have to be
prepared to queue on arrival at Opus, the main restaurant, if
you have not reserved a table
in advance (which you can do 24 hours prior), and also be less particular about your
choice of table size. That said, we were always

Land of the Northern Lights
DOUBLE SAVINGS!
The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights as they are more popularly known, are the world’s most spectacular naturally occurring phenomenon, and a cruise on which you’ll experience them makes for a truly memorable northern European holiday. The Northern Lights are a stunning display of colours in the sky particularly visible during winter and caused by electrically charged solar particles entering the Earth’s atmosphere. Whichever voyage you book, you’ll have the chance to visit the Northern Lights Observatory in Alta, the perfect place from which to witness the lights and Tromsø the capital of the Troms County, where the lights are often visible.

excursion that you can undertake
depends on your interests. You might be the sporty type who wants to go hiking,
or diving to see wildlife on tropical reefs. It could be that you’re a foodie, looking to enjoy the culinary delights of the
countries you visit. Or it may be that you’re fascinated by history.
Wherever you decide to cruise to, there
are plenty of amazing excursions that can

life. Whether you’re taking an ultra-luxury oriented line you can enjoy a wealth of
treasures on land, with activities and tours to suit all interests.
Generally you can break down shore
excursions into a number of different categories as there are various styles
available. One of the most common is your
standard city tour. These are simply guided tours around the destination that you’ve
reached, led by an English-speaking guide
and focusing more on the major highlights
city before and you want a general flavour, Sometimes there are tours which have a certain theme, focusing more on one
type of attraction or sight. So it could be, for example, a tour of the museums, or a
guided trip around the intricate churches and cathedrals of your destination. Or if your destination is known for a certain
theme, such as being a famous site from a particular war or having strong ties to an
industry, tours may be offered explaining more of the history of this subject.

you simply cannot miss. It’s been open to the public for over 160 years and is made

What makes it such an amazing attraction is that it has a huge collection of over

The Magic of the Orient From ancient temples and monuments to stunning scenery and the finest cuisine, few voyages offer as many exotic wonders as the Far East. by Simon Brotherton
N
othing quite says ‘exotic’ like the notion of a voyage through the
ancient and mysterious orient; a land of temples, palaces, pagodas
and breathtaking natural scenery where there’s hundreds of years of
fascinating history to explore. Indeed, on a cruise to the majestic Far East you can certainly experience all those things but this is a region where there’s so
much more on offer. Here, old meets new to astounding effect and ultra-modern
megacities are home to a heady mix of cultures and experiences, where the choice
of exotic cuisine and retail options is as abundant and enticing as the otherworldly architecture.
‘The Far East’ is actually a catch-all term we British coined to refer to the
eastern and south-eastern areas of the Asian continent, meaning there are many
contrasting countries to explore. Depending on your itinerary, you can experience the highlights of such countries as China, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and Myanmar and a host of iconic capital cities, each with their own unique histories and distinctive landmarks to enjoy.
Mainly because of the extremely hot climate in many parts of the region during
the summer, you’ll find that Far East cruises tend to take place in the winter and early spring months. When it comes to itineraries, because your ports of call on
this cruise are on the other side of the world, the only way to explore the region on a shorter itinerary is by way of a fly cruise, where you’ll jet off to one of the major
cities and begin your cruise from there. It may be a round-trip but it’s also possible to end your journey in a different city and fly home from there. Another way to
sample the delights of the Far East and pretty much the only way to do so when Krabi, Thailand
travelling from the UK is by booking a world cruise, as all such voyages tend to call at a number of far-eastern ports during their itineraries.

Whether you’ve a dream experience or you simply want an incredible cruise package, our take on bucket list cruising highlights many of the best holidays available. by Ian Lewis
T
here’s every chance you’ll be familiar with the term ‘bucket list’ but for anyone who isn’t, it’s simply a
list of all the things you want to do before you ‘kick
the bucket’. This could involve all manner of objectives, from
visiting some of the world’s most famous and historic places, to climbing its highest peaks and getting up-close and personal with an exotic species of animal or three.
Whether it’s scaling the world’s highest peaks, sailing its
mightiest rivers or meeting its most unusual creatures, there are so many things that we dream of doing and compiling a bucket list of those dreams is the first step many of us take towards achieving those life goals.
The great thing is it’s possible that you could cross off a
number of items on your own list during a single cruise
holiday, as some of these voyages are the perfect way to visit a number of countries – and some of their most famous sites – in a short space of time.
There are all manner of things you might be interested in that would work wonders when combined with a cruise
holiday. Cruises are the ideal flexible option for bucket list
holidaying as you can see various countries and get close to
all manner of events or landmarks. Even if something is held inland, you can dock at the nearest port and transfer to the The Great Wall of China

Moving away from sporting events, helicopter tours are
one of those touches that really make a holiday feel special. There are few things in the world which retain an element of exclusivity, and a sense of experience that generates excitement and genuine awe. It becomes an occasion,

Or it could be that a natural wonder is the kind of thing you are desperate to experience. The Northern Lights are one of those phenomena that top almost everyone’s bucket lists,
just because there’s a magical quality about being able to see
these breath-taking colours dancing across the sky. A number of cruises already use the Northern Lights as a focal point due to it being such a popular event.
Sticking with the natural world, you might want to try
swimming with some of the amazing species of the world. A lot of people want to go snorkelling around the Great Barrier Reef, famous as being home to some of the best

There are all kinds of suggestions that are possible. You might want to take a ride in a hot air balloon, or sleep

no light pollution to ruin the view. It could be that you want to expand your horizons with a new language, with some

Europe's Top 10 Rivers One of the best things about a river cruise is that there are a great number of different rivers that you can choose from when you’re looking for a destination. Each has a unique flavour, giving a true distinct variety to your cruise options and ensuring that there’s always something for everyone. Of course it comes down to your own preferences, but here’s my own personal top 10 list of European rivers that are commonly sailed on as part of a cruise holiday... by Ian Lewis

With snow-capped mountain peaks, aweinspiring glaciers, immense icebergs and
majestic wildlife greeting you at every turn, it’s not hard to see why Alaska is one of the most sought-after cruise destinations.
Alaska is America’s largest state and is

The Inside Passage was sculpted by the
force of glaciers millions of years ago and extends close to land from northwestern
Washington State, through western British Columbia, to southeastern Alaska. This part of Alaska is historically known for

ALASKA & THE ROCKIES Destination spotlight:
Juneau
The capital of Alaska and the USA’s secondlargest city by area, Juneau is a key port
of call on Alaskan voyages because of the
large number of attractions and spectacular natural wonders which are within easy reach of the city. Within Juneau itself,
there’s a fascinating history to explore, too. As it lies in a region which played a
significant role in the American Gold Rush, it’s perhaps not surprising that Juneau was named after the Canadian gold prospector
Joe Juneau, who discovered gold there and co-founded the city with fellow prospector Richard Harris. It has been Alaska’s
capital since 1906 and is today part of the
Municipality of Juneau, along with Douglas and the greater Juneau Borough, after merging with them in 1970.
Nature If it’s natural beauty you’re after, then
Juneau’s the place, as there’s so much to
see nearby and all manner of excursions are operated from the city. Tracy Arm Fjord is
perhaps the most famous natural attraction associated with Juneau; a spectacular body of water which carves two glaciers; North and South Sawyer.
The Mendenhall Glacier, which boasts an
excellent and informative visitor centre,
the Nugget Glacier creek, the falls drop
Juneau, and together with the spectacular
offer some fantastic photo opportunities.
is another hugely popular excursion from Mendenhall Valley it forms the protected
Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area. There
are a number of trails from the centre which all offer spectacular views of the glacier and surrounding scenery and another
key Juneau attraction can be found along one of them; Nugget Falls. Formed by
some 377 feet into Mendenhall Lake and
Mount Roberts is another popular natural
wonder and whether you choose to take an
exhilarating tram ride or a scenic hike to the summit, you’ll enjoy a great view of both the city and the Chilkat Mountains.
Culture There are a number of cultural attractions which play their part in telling Juneau’s
story. Built to honour Alaska’s patron saint, the Shrine of St Therese is a tranquil place
for quiet contemplation regardless of your faith, located on an island outside Juneau. The city’s also home to the Alaskan State
Museum, which is the ideal place to learn all about the history of Alaska, from the
story of its native peoples to Russia’s later ownership. Speaking of Russia, a legacy
of the country’s link with the region and a popular cultural attraction is St Nicholas, a beautiful Russian Orthodox Church
which offers visitors a little slice of Eastern
Europe in Alaska. The Last Chance Mining Museum meanwhile, is the place to go to
find out all about the history of the region’s The Mendenhall Glacier
gold mining industry and the role it played in the great American Gold Rush.

ALASKA & THE ROCKIES Peyto Lake in Banff National Park
Cruisetour spotlight:
The Canadian Rockies Cruisetours are a great way to extend your cruise in this fascinating region
and combine the luxury of a cruise with the adventure of a land tour. You can explore a number of scarcely-visited
regions, including the Alaskan interior or the extreme north, but the Rocky
Mountains remain one of the most popular destinations.
Famously known as the Rockies, they’re
one of the world’s most famous mountain ranges, extending for more than 3,000
miles from the north of British Columbia in Canada all the way down to New Mexico in the United States. Even with a couple of days to spare, you’d be hard-pressed to explore even a small part of this vast
mountain range under your own steam, which is where the Rocky Mountaineer
comes in. Many Alaskan cruises begin or end in the Canadian city of Vancouver,
and it’s from here that this famous Rocky Mountain train begins its journey. The
Classic Rockies route involves a memorable two-day journey from Vancouver to Banff via Kamloops, which offers travellers the chance to experience the Rockies’
sensational beauty and most memorable points of interest. With breakfast, lunch,
accommodation and transfers included, this is certainly one train journey you’ll never forget.
