Marc Mauillon

The Royal Danish Opera: L’Orfeo L’Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) is the earliest opera still performed today with some frequency. Monteverdi wrote it in 1607 for the wintertime Carnival season in the Italian city of Mantua. The story is the familiar mythological one of Orpheus and Eurydice, and moves between sunny landscapes to the darker confines of the Greek underworld. The composer called for strings and harps to accompany the earthly scenes and brass instruments for depicting the underworld. Orfeo is sung by French baritone Marc Mauillon, and the role of Eurydice, which would originally have been taken by a castrato, was portrayed by soprano Sofie Sund-Tonnesen. Lars Ulrik Mortensen conducts. Saturday, August 29 12:00 pm

the Italian-Jewish Baroque master Salamone Rossi.
