Bearcat athletes excel on their respective teams throughout the year. Several teams have attained postseason success during recent seasons, continuing a history of excellence in Willamette Athletics. These teams and athletes also shine in the classroom. From Academic All-District and Academic All-America selections to several Fulbright, Kemper and NCAA Postgraduate scholarship winners, WU athletes have been honored for their academic achievements. It is this combination, along with a strong commitment to community service and Willamette’s motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” that makes Bearcat Athletics great. The 2013 Willamette University Men’s Soccer Media Guide was written by Robert McKinney, athletics communications director, and by athletics communications assistants Timothy Walsh and Brandon Chinn. Designed by Christopher Sabato, graphic design specialist. Edited by McKinney. Additional help provided by athletics communications assistants Walsh, Chinn and Aly Croney. Lloyd Fobi
Head Coach - 3rd Year Email: lfobi@willamette.edu Office Phone: (503) 375-5428
Last season, head coach Lloyd Fobi drected Willamette to its first winning season since 2001. The Bearcats achieved a record of 10-7-2, including 7-5-2 in the Northwest Conference. Lloyd Fobi is in his third season as the head coach of the Willamette University men’s soccer team. Under his guidance, the Bearcats have achieved a 16-16-4 overall record and a 12-13-3 record in Northwest Conference play. It is the best two-year win-loss record for Willamette men’s soccer since 2000 and 2001.
In 2012, Willamette achieved a 10-7-2 overall record, including a 7-5-2 mark (4th place) in the NWC, for the Bearcats’ first winning season since 2000. Highlighting the year were a 3-2 overtime win against then undefeated, 10th-ranked Whitworth University, a second consecutive sweep (2 wins) versus archrival Linfield College.
co-champion Pacific Lutheran University, while earning a pair of 3-0 wins over archrival Linfield College. Prior to arriving at Willamette, Fobi was an assistant men’s soccer coach at nearby Corban University for a year and a half. He has also coached with the Oregon Olympic Development Program. As a college player, Fobi competed for Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore. He played on two OSU teams that were nationally ranked (2003, 2005) and helped the Beavers reach the NCAA Tournament in 2003.
An entertaining and aggressive team, Willamette led the NWC with 36 goals scored. Senior Mike McGrew became the first Bearcat to be named First Team AllNWC since 2003.
“It’s a different angle looking at the game from a coach’s perspective ... you have to look at it from the whole picture, what the final goal will be and how to get there. How do you build each day to get to that?,” Fobi said.
Willamette finished the 2011 season with a 6-9-2 overall record, including a 5-8-1 mark in the NWC -- an improvement of three overall wins and four conference wins from the previous year. The Bearcats notched a 2-1 winc over eventual NWC
“Our goal is to be the best team in our conference,” Fobi commented. “We will be a blue collar team. That is what we have to be to reach our goals. It’s how you carry yourself ... it’s working hard, but working smart.”

2013 MEN’S SOCCER
2012 SEASON REVIEW
2013 SEASON OUTLOOK
Last season saw the Willamette men’s soccer team continue its remarkable resurgence under second-year Head Coach Lloyd Fobi. The Bearcats went 10-7-2 overall, including 7-5-2 (4th place) in the Northwest Conference.
Coming off its best season in over a decade, Willamette’s rapidly improving men’s soccer program plans to use 2013 to solidify its place in the upper eschelon of the Northwest Conference.
It was WU first winning season since 2000, when the Bearcats went 10-8-2 (6-6-2 in the NWC) under WU Athletic Hall of Fame Head Coach Jim Tursi. Along the way, Willamette registered several impressive triumphs, including a 3-2, double-overtime victory against 10th-ranked and previously undefeated Whitworth on Oct.27 The Bearcats also posted a 2-1 win at Puget Sound and secured their second consecutive season sweep of archrival Linfield. WU notched a 3-2 victory in McMinnville on Oct. 6 and concluded the season with a dramatic 4-3 win over the Wildcats at Sparks Field. All told, Willamette was victorious in six of its final eight matches, and led the NWC with 36 goals scored. Seven of the Bearcats received All-NWC honors, a record for the program since joining NCAA Division III in 1998. Senior midfielder Mike McGrew was the first Willamette player selected First Team All-NWC since 2003, while fellow seniors Etienne Galbreath (D) and Erik Kaufman (F) earned Second Team All-NWC recognition. Another Second Team selection was Trevor Jensen (Jr., MF), who notched eight assists, tying Willamette’s singleseason record. Yazan Hishmeh (Fr., F) led WU with seven goals on the year, while Kevin Martin (Jr., D) helped Galbreath anchor a solid defense. Both were named Honorable Mention All-NWC.
After leading the NWC in goals scored one year ago, the Bearcats look to be powerful on offense again this season, with playmaking senior midfielder Trevor Jensen leading the way. Jensen scored five goals and notched eight assists last year, tying a single-season school record in the process. His 18 points ranked third in the NWC in overall scoring. Along with Jensen, forwards Adan Vazquez and Will O’Neil, defender Kevin Martin, and midfielder Robin Hryciuk round out Willamette’s experienced senior class. Just three juniors will be in action for WU this season, while the Bearcats’ 14-man sophomore class saw significant playing time last year. Nine freshmen round out the team’s roster. Starting goalkeeper Braydon Calder (So.) earned a 9-6-1 record in goal last year. He posted a 1.36 goals against average, two solo shutouts and recorded 55 saves. After starting nine matches in 2012, fellow sophomore Sam Gonzalez (D) is expected to join Martin on a retooled, but not necessarily rebuilt, back line. Although Jensen is the midfield leader, Tyler Yates (So., MF) should play an expanded role this year. Yates played in all 19 matches as a freshman, scoring four goals and registering eight assists. Yazan Hishmeh (So., F) figures to be Willamette’s biggest threat up top. A big, physical forward, Hishmeh led WU in goals (7) shots (33) and shots on goal (19) in 2012. The speedy Vazquez complements Hishmeh’s physical presence, and has scored eight career goals.

The Willamette University sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes. Athletic trainers focus on two components: service and education. Service includes the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by our athletes. It also involves referrals to medical personnel when athletes become injured or ill. The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical setting.
Students achieve experience by covering practices and games, and by working in the treatment centers where they help Willamette’s certified athletic trainers with rehabilitation of injuries. Our athletic training staff works closely with our team physicians from Silverton Hospital, the physical therapist from PT Northwest and the staff at the Bishop Wellness Center on the WU campus to provide care for our varsity athletes. WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY
With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.
Salem, Oregon
Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block. Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know. When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

sparks field The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility on the WU campus. Sparks Field has lights for night games and seats 500 fans. The facility, which features a FieldTurf surface, is one of the top small college fields in the Pacific Northwest. Sparks Field also includes covered seating for both teams and has a public address system. Adjacent to Sparks Field is the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center includes the Fitness Center, which is available for use by the soccer teams. The Currey Classroom in the Sparks Center is a great location for team meetings and to evaluate player performances on video. Other facilities at WU include Cone Field House for volleyball as well as men’s and women’s basketball, McCulloch Stadium for football plus track and field, John Lewis Field for baseball, the WU Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. Cross country meets are held in Bush’s Pasture Park, the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River, and golfers practice at both Illahe Country Club and Creekside Golf Club.

sparks CENTER Sparks Field is located next to the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center also has offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. There are extra courts on the lower level for basketball and volleyball, plus handball and racquetball courts. There is a weight lifting and fitness center, as well as classrooms and locker rooms.
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Willamette has won 28 NWC team titles since 2003. Current coaches at WU have achieved NWC Coach of the Year honors 24 times. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.
NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
