Head Coach Tom Shoji is in his 30th year as a college head coach. He previously coached at New Mexico State, Indiana University, Westmar University, and Colorado State-Pueblo. Head Coach Tom Shoji begins his sixth season at Willamette University. Last year, WU had a veteran balanced team, with four seniors and five juniors on the squad. This year, the team remains balanced with five seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and four freshmen on the 15-player squad. In 2011, Shoji coached the Bearcats to their most successful season since 2004. Under his guidance, the team finished at 8-8 in the NWC. Shoji has developed a long and respected career as a volleyball coach. His head coaching experience in women’s volleyball covers 30 seasons, including six years at New Mexico State University and six
seasons at Indiana University. He was at Westmar University in Iowa for one year and coached at Colorado State UniversityPueblo for 11 years. Shoji completed work on his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of California-Santa Barbara. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Ergonomics and Physical Education from UCSB in 1971 and received a Master of Arts degree in Ergonomics and Physical Education in 1978. In 1996, Shoji was chosen as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Northwest Region Coach of the Year for NCAA Division II and was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Coach of the Year. He has worked with the NCAA Division I West Region Committee and chaired the AVCA All-America Committee for NCAA Division I. Shoji, who is originally from Hawaii, lives in Salem with his wife, Chris. They have a daughter, Malia, who is a graduate assistant coach for the volleyball team at nearby Western Oregon University. Tom’s brother, Dave Shoji, has been the head women’s volleyball coach at the University of Hawaii since 1975.

Una Japundza is in her first year as an assistant volleyball coach at Willamette University. Japundza is joining the Bearcats coaching staff after graduating from Robert Morris University last spring with a degree in Business Administration. A member of RMU’s volleyball team, Japundza played in 56 career matches for the Colonials. During her three years with the program (2010-2012), Japundza helped the Colonials achieve an overall Northeast Conference record of 36-12. While earning a full ride scholarship to compete in volleyball at RMU, Japundza finished her collegiate career with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average. She also graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors. Japundza’s excellence in the classroom allowed her to take away several awards and accolades. She was named RMU International Student of the Year, RMU Outstanding Management Student of the Year and RMU Athletics Highest Grade Point Average during her senior year. Additionally, Japundza was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at RMU, while also being involved with United Way and the RMU Center for Student Success.
Peter Balding
Assistant Coach - 1st Year
Peter Balding joins the Bearcats coaching staff as an assistant coach after spending a total of 13 years as a head volleyball coach at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Balding has coached both the men’s and women’s teams at Punahou, serving most recently as the head coach of the girls’ team from 2010-12. Balding has achieved great success throughout his coaching career. He has won 14 Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) State Championships and garnered Coach of the Year honors on eight separate occasions. Balding’s volleyball experience expands back to his own playing days as well. He was a member of the Pepperdine University 1978 NCAA National Championship team and has also participated in the 1983 Pan American Games and 1983 World University Games. Originally residing in Hawaii, Balding is living in Salem with his wife, Mary while coaching at Willamette. Their daughter, Lizzy Balding, is a senior libero on the team.

Season Review After dropping 10 of their first 13 games to start the 2012 season, the Bearcats rallied back to win six of their final 10. That late-season surge brought Willamette’s overall record to 9-14, 7-9 in the NWC. Among those late season wins, none was bigger than their victory on Sept. 28 when Willamette upended #10 Puget Soung 3-2 after dropping the first two sets of the match. In her final season as a Bearcat, Madisyn Leenstra led Willamette with 284 kills and a 3.30 kills per set average. She recorded double digit kills in 14 of Willamette’s 23 matches.
Season Outlook Despite the loss of four productive seniors from the 2012 roster, Willamette remains rich in talent and is in a good position to compete in its sixth season under Head Coach Tom Shoji. With a combination of experience and talent, the inside unit will likely be the focal point of the WU attack. Senior’s Shannon Waltz and Carly Hargrave remain in the middle for the Bearcats while fellow senior Kirsten Brehmer and juniors Elisa Ahern and Taylor Gee are sure to get on the action as well. Emily Compton is starting her fourth year as the Bearcat setter. So far in her WU career, Compton has tallied 2213 assists, for an average of 8.61 assists per set.
Leenstra’s highlight game came on Oct. 5 against Lewis & Clark when she notched a career high 28 kills in the victory. For her efforts, Leenstra became the first Bearcat since 2004 to earn First Team All-NWC recognition.
Senior libero/defensive specialist Lizzy Balding will look to lead the Bearcats defensively. Splitting time through her junior year, Balding has recorded an even 600 digs to lead the Willamette active roster.
Junior Shannon Waltz was the only other Bearcat to earn conference recognition, being named Honorable Mention NWC for the second consecutive season. Waltz provided Willamette with 125 kills and 72 total blocks while leading the conference with a .301 hitting percentage.
With six newcomers on board in 2013, the Bearcats have added what coach Shoji thinks might be his strongest recruiting class yet.
Junior Carly Hargrave led the team in blocks with 103. She ranked third in the conference with a 1.20 blocks per set average. Hargrave also finished with 192 kills and a .276 hitting percentage. Junior setter Emily Compton notched 846 assists. Her 9.51 assists per set average ranked third in the Northwest Conference. Defensively, the Bearcats were led by senior Kathy Lee Glenn, who achieved 326 digs (4.79 avg.). She also finished second on the team with 29 assists.
Sophomore transfers Lindsey Compton and Sarah Fincher, along with true freshmen Riley Fawcett, Alida Holt and Taylor Lum are all expected to immediately help fill the void at the outside hitter position. Alexa Dowdell will also be counted on to provide depth at both the opposite and middle hitter positions. Willamette’s 2013 schedule kicks off on Aug. 30 in California for the Pacific Coast Classic. The pre-season schedule also includes a trip to the Colorado College Molten Classic (Sept. 6-7). The Northwest Conference schedule gets underway on Sept. 20 against Whitworth University. Willamette’s first home game will be eight days later against Pacific Lutheran, the defending NWC champions.

The Willamette University sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes. Athletic trainers focus on two components: service and education. Service includes the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries suffered by our athletes. It also involves referrals to medical personnel when athletes become injured or ill. The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical setting.

With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions. The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too. Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette. Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes. CONE FIELD HOUSE Cone Field House is the home of Willamette’s volleyball team, plus the men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams. The arena includes Gordie James Court, which holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on both sides of the playing surface.The court was redone in 2010 with the Bearcat logo added at center court. The WU volleyball court is connected to the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center includes the Fitness Center, which his available for use by the volleyball team. The Currey Classroom in the Sparks Center is a great location for team meetings and to evaluate player performances on video. Other facilities at WU include Sparks Field, where the men’s and women’s soccer teams play, McCulloch Stadium for football and track and field, John Lewis Field for baseball, the WU Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. The Bearcats host cross country meets in Bush’s Pasture Park, the rowing teams practice on the Willamette River, and golfers practice at both Illahe Country Club and Creekside Golf Club.

sparks CENTER Cone Field House is located in the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center also has offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. There are extra courts on the lower level for basketball and volleyball, plus handball and racquetball courts. There is a weight lifting and fitness center, as well as classrooms and locker rooms.
The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Willamette has won 28 NWC team titles since 2003. Current coaches at WU have achieved NWC Coach of the Year honors 24 times. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.
NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves. For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Dr. Stephen Thorsett
Willamette University President Stephen Thorsett became the 25th president of Willamette University and professor of physics in Willamette’s College of Liberal Arts on July 1, 2011. Thorsett served previously as the dean of the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences at University of California, Santa Cruz. He joined UC-Santa Cruz as an associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics in 1999. He was appointed to professor of astronomy and astrophysics and chair of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics in 2003.
David Rigsby
Willamette University Director of Athletics David Rigsby is in his third year as the director of athletics at Willamette University. He previously served in several positions in the campus life division, most recently as associate dean of campus life. Rigsby was a member of the baseball team at WU for two years before his career was shortened by an arm injury. He earned a B.A. degree from Willamette in 2000 with a major in Chemistry, and later added an M.S. from Duquesne University.
