WELCOME! Dear parent & family members, The First Year Center would like to extend a warm welcome to you and your student. We understand the transition from high school can be a major adjustment not only for students, but also for family members as well. The First Year Center is here to ensure those transitions are as easy and comfortable as possible for everyone involved. Our goal is to make sure each new student builds and sustains his or her academic and personal goals. We bring together people, programs, and resources to provide an undergraduate experience of exceptional quality, where we come to know each student by name and story and where we help them prepare for a life of purpose and meaning. We are here to help your student have an amazing experience at Washington University in St. Louis. The orientation experiences for students and families are intentionally planned separately to give each of you the opportunity to learn about the university and all we have to offer. While your student is meeting classmates and learning about life on campus, we strive to help you become familiar with the Washington University community. Your student will be very busy over the next few days and your time together will be limited. When making plans with your student, please refer to your student’s schedule to be sure they are on time for important Bear Beginnings programs. If you will still be in St. Louis, time has been set aside for dinner on Saturday evening and lunch on Sunday evening for you to enjoy meals together. Keep in mind that your student will be extraordinarily busy from this point onwards. During Bear Beginnings: New Student Fall Orientation, both students and their family members will receive a lot of information about a wide variety of topics. We encourage you to speak with your student about your experiences and ask them about theirs as well. Bear Beginnings is organized to cover the following topics with your students: • • • •
Academic integrity Academic resources and support Alcohol and drugs Being a positive member of the Washington University community • Dining options • Diversity and inclusion

Health and counseling services Living in St. Louis Living with a roommate/suitemate Preparing for classes Safety Sexual assault
Please talk to your students about these topics as they may have questions that you want to answer. We will also be providing you with an opportunity over the next two days to write a note to your student, which will then be mailed a few weeks into the semester. The “Letters from Home” notecards will be available for pick up and drop off at various parent and family events. Finally, always know the First Year Center is a resource for both you and for your student. We are here to answer any questions you have or provide any help that you need. CAMPUS TOURS 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM | DANFORTH UNIVERSITY CENTER, GRAND STAIRCASE Tours of the Danforth Campus, not including the South 40, will be provided by the Washington University Student Associates (WUSAs). WUSAs work for the First Year Center serving as orientation leaders during Bear Beginnings, and then as academic mentors throughout the first year. Tours depart every hour. The last tour will leave at 3:00 PM.
SWAP: SHARING WITH A PURPOSE MOVE-IN SALE 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM | SOUTH 40, BASKETBALL COURTS SWAP is holding a sale of reusable room items, including furniture, fridges, and microwaves. SWAP is a student-run nonprofit that works to keep items in reuse on campus. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Trading Post, an on-campus freecycling center.

White and Karen Levin Coburn, Senior Consultant-in-Residence and co-author of the best selling Letting Go: A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years (2016)—along with two upperclass students—will give parents and families a preview of the ups and downs of the Washington University first-year experience and ways for parents and families to support their student’s success and evolving independence. This is an interactive session that will allow parents and families to ask questions about what to expect in the first year. Martin welcomes all new students and families to the university. Speakers will include the interim Provost, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and a Washington University senior. Doors will open at 6:45 PM for parent and family seating. Seating in the Athletic Complex for families and guests is extremely limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note, the majority of seating in the Athletic Complex is limited to bleachers and requires the ability to climb stairs. Additional viewing locations with a live televised broadcast of the ceremony are listed above. Guests with small children or mobility limitations, requiring the use of wheelchairs or chairs with back support, may want to consider these additional viewing areas. Families in the additional viewing areas will be closer to the East End where all new students will gather with their families to close the Convocation Ceremony.
