SKANDALARIS WHERE CREATIVE CENTER MINDS CONNECT
WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS
Welcome to WashU from the Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation & Entrepreneurship!
The Skandalaris Center aims to inspire and develop creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship at WashU. Our resources are open to all students —no matter your major. We offer networking, training, and funding opportunities along with creative programs throughout the year to help you succeed in your innovative and entrepreneurial pursuits.
Visit SC.wustl.edu to learn more! The Skandalaris Student Entrepreneurial Program (StEP) provides a unique opportunity for students to own and operate a business on campus that serves the WashU community. Student owners can supplement the valuable business and entrepreneurial skills they learn in the classroom with real-world experience as they manage and lead their own businesses. Students can buy into an existing business or start a new one. Early fall 2021, we will have shares of Refresh, Bears Bikes, and Bear-y Sweet Shoppe for sale!
How to Get Involved
Undergraduate students can either purchase shares of an existing StEP business or start a new business. Loans are available to students with demonstrated financial need. Email the Skandalaris Center for more information about StEP: sc@wustl.edu.
2021-2022 StEP Businesses Bears Bikes was founded by two WashU students in 2004 when a lunchtime chat led to a simple idea: let students rent bikes for the semester or school year! Bears Bikes exists today to help the WashU community move sustainably. Our values are sustainability, safety, convenience, and reliability. Bear-y Sweet Shoppe is a pay-by-weight candy store. The Bear-y Sweet Shoppe owners sell their shares of the company to underclassmen, so the business will always be owned and operated by students, for students. Working on a team that is constantly changing gives us the chance to bring in fresh perspectives, new ideas, (and more and more candy) every year - and we love every minute of it!
Founded in the fall of 2020 amidst the pandemic, DormDrop seeks to serve the WashU community by delivering food directly to students’ dorms. Providing a contactless food delivery experience is something we pride ourselves on. Focusing on selling items primarily made by WashU students and members of the surrounding communities, Gallery 314 was founded as a celebration of entrepreneurship, creativity, and most importantly, St. Louis!
Refresh is a premier salon and barbershop serving WashU, conveniently located near 18 undergraduate residencies. We only hire high-quality licensed professionals throughout the Greater St. Louis Area who do all types of hair styling and grooming services including haircuts, buzzcuts, blow-outs, coloring, waxing and threading, styling and more. Since its founding in 2008, Sharing With A Purpose (SWAP) annually collects reusable items left by students during the spring move-out season and stores them over the summer. SWAP then resells these items to students at an affordable price during Move-In. SWAP also runs the Trading Post, an exchange store on the WashU campus.
Our founders believed that students should not have to waste hours out of their weeks going through the dormitory’s laundry process. Since then, Wash U Wash has evolved into being the university’s premier student-run laundry service, offering excellent drycleaning and folded laundry to both the student population and university administration.
