You Are Here : Bay Area Transformations This course is an interdisciplinary design studio covering the fields of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Master Planning. A series of projects were designed in the bay area, addressing the varying scales of these fields, with programs defined through site visits, research and location specific needs. The focus on the interventions was to engage both visiting and localized communities simultaneously, as is the nature of balancing called for in the bay area’s recent decades of growth and further global attention.

Three Landscape Interventions, New Boardwalk, Landscape Masterplan

SITE : For Project 1, our site is the wildlife refuge landscape surrounding of The Don Edwards Alviso Education Center. Located at the northern edge of Alviso, on a small peninsula reaching into the bay, stands a 1970’s timber-industrial-structure building that is Education Center. Surrounded by marsh-land, water and levies the Ed. center extends into the landscape minimally with a small boardwalk with benches and Ed. signage, a garden, an open air classroom, as well as the practical access road and main parking lot, as well as a smaller auxiliary parking area to accommodate access beyond the hours of operation. 10

Keeping Quiet Pablo Naruda

Now we will count to twelve and we will all keep still. This one time upon the earth, let’s not speak any language, let’s stop for one second, and not move our arms so much. It would be a delicious moment

What I want shouldn’t be confused with final inactivity: life alone is what matters I want nothing to do with death. If we weren’t unanimous about keeping our lives so much in motion, if we could do nothing for once, perhaps a great silence would interrupt this sadness, this never understanding ourselves and threatening ourselves with death, perhaps the earth is teaching us when everything seems to be dead and then everything is alive. Now I will count to twelve and you keep quiet and I’ll go.

without hurry, without locomotives, all of us would be together in a sudden uneasiness. The fishermen in the cold sea would do no harm to the whales and the peasant gathering salt would look at his torn hands. Those who prepare green wars, wars of gas, wars of fire, victories without survivors, would put on clean clothing and would walk alongside their brothers in the shade, without doing a thing.

Isolation // Cubes are isolated to create a comfortable enough space for people inside to meditate and enjoy the framed view. PROGRAM :

New Visitor’s Center Building, New Boardwalk, Landscape Masterplan

SITE : For Project 2, our site is The Don Edwards Visitor’s Center & Offices in the surrounding Wildlife Refuge landscape. Located at the western edge of Fremont, CA a small mountain roughly 80’ tall extends along a waterfront, dividing the wildlife marshlands of Fremont from the marshlands at the Bay’s edge. In the site are the existing Don Edwards Offices (which are located in the former Visitor’s Center building) as well as the small and ‘meant-to-be-temporary’ current Don Edwards Visitor’s Center building. Both of these facilities as well as the hiking trails and landscape access, are served by two large parking lots. The relatively isolated site is still very accessible near the bay-crossing, highway 84, allowing the mountain location to have main entry points from both North and South. The site is central and serves as the welcome point and home base for the vast 30,000 acres, of the Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge. photo : Yifan Shen

“A free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped his feet are ties so he opens his throat to sing The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but lngs for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings freedom The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds sofy through the sighning trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn But a chaged bird stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts a nightmare scream his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but lngs for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings freedom.
