About washburn Washburn University was established in February 1865 as Lincoln College by a charter issued by the State of Kansas and the General Association of Congregational Ministers and Churches of Kansas. A two-story brick building on the northeast corner of 10th and Jackson Streets was soon erected and the first classes began in January 1866. In 1868, the school was renamed Washburn College, in recognition of a $25,000 donation by Ichabod Washburn, a church deacon and resident of Worcester, Mass. The university was granted a permanent location in 1865 when Topekan Col. John Ritchie donated a 160-acre site, which at the time was a considerable distance southwest of the city. Construction on the first building began in 1872, with occupancy taking place in 1874. For the next two decades, college President Peter McVicar conducted an aggressive development campaign. His efforts resulted in the establishment of numerous Victorian limestone structures which characterized the campus for the next 90 years. Expansion of the school was constant. The School of Law was organized in 1903, as was a School of Fine Arts and a medical school, which educated physicians until 1913. During the next three decades structures such as the Mulvane Art Museum, Benton Hall and Whiting Field House were added to the campus. In June 1966, a tornado struck Topeka and several historic buildings on campus were demolished. The Washburn community rallied and financial support from friends and alumni made possible

about washburn the rebuilding of many school facilities during the coming years. Today, university facilities offer more than one million square feet of modern academic and support space. In 1952, the Washburn Board of Regents officially changed the name of the school to Washburn University of Topeka. In 1999, the university's primary funding was moved from city property tax to county sales tax sources, with the school retaining status as a municipal subdivision of the state. In addition to local financial support, Washburn has received state funds since 1961, which have been coordinated by the Kansas Board of Regents since 1991. Washburn is governed by its own nine member Board of Regents. Washburn provides broadly-based liberal arts and professional education through more than 190 certificate, associate, baccalaureate, master's and juris doctor programs through the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Law, Business, Nursing and Applied Studies. The Ichabod Club is a booster club that works to promote Washburn University Athletics and provides financial support to its athletic programs. Membership in the Ichabod Club has played a major role in supporting the annual scholarship drive and making a difference in the lives of Washburn student-athletes for the past 20 years. Washburn Athletics depends upon the annual contributions to the Ichabod Club Scholarship Fund to continue offering scholarship aid to our student-athletes. The mission of the Ichabod Club is simply to provide the scholarship assistance to young men and women student-athletes (tuition, fees, books, room and board) unless the contribution is restricted to a specific sport or some other specific purpose. All gifts to the Ichabod Club are tax deductible to the full extent allowable by law. Opportunities for alumni, friends, parents and boosters to become involved with the Ichabod Club program are available through pregame parties, golf tournaments, the Ichabod Club newsletter, monthly luncheons, the kick-off party and other special events. 2004 Washburn preview By Gene Cassell Sports Information Director The Washburn Lady Blues enter their second season in school history with a renewed confidence and eagerness to start the 2004 season. Eighteen of the 23 Lady Blues on the roster have played through an entire season of collegiate soccer compared to on three of 22 players who made up the 2003 edition of the Washburn soccer team. Add to this season’s roster, two NCAA Division I transfers who have experience soccer played at a higher level, the Lady Blues are ready to improve on their inaugural season record of 4-13-1. The 2004 Washburn Lady Blues soccer team has 15 players back from last season and mostly dominate the roster as sophomores. The Lady Blues have only one upper classman and have added five freshmen to fill out the roster. “Even though we have lost seven players off of last season’s roster, we have by far improved our talent level and our depth on this year’s squad,” head coach Tim Collins said. “Having a full year to recruit our incoming freshmen has also helped our skill level and it was a very successful recruiting season bringing in five talented newcomers.” The Lady Blues, in addition to five new freshman, have also added the services of three transfers, two of whom come from the NCAA Division I ranks, and the other who played on a regionally ranked NAIA squad who played deep into the playoffs. The Returners The Lady Blues return fourteen players off of last year’s squad, including two all-MIAA honorable mention selections a pair of sophomores. Forward Jenna Lawless and defender Meagan Horvath are each back after combining for 11 goals, five assists and 27 points, which accounted for 42 percent of last season’s point total. A change has been made with Horvath for the upcoming season as she is moving to defender from the midfield position she manned last year scoring five goals with four assists. “This will be an adjustment for Meagan moving to the defense, but it is a position on the field she played in high school and her leg strength will be a boost to us in the defensive end,” Collins said. Lawless returns to one of the forward positions and she will be joined by sophomore Jolene Silovsky. All though she did not play last season on the field, the Missouri-Rolla transfer did practice with the squad and was able to play in spring matches with the team.

Also returning to the forward position is sophomore Celese Siebert. Siebert scored two goals last season. In the midfield, the Lady Blues return three of their four starters in a trio of sophomores in Amanda Geist, Anna Fahey and Deidre Gorynski. All three scored one goal last season. Other returnees include sophomore Amanda Broome and junior Virginia Barnes. The Lady Blues return the most experienced group in the defenders section of the field. With the addition of Horvath to the group, sophomores Laura Barnaby, Stephanie Bruegger and Erica Schmidt all return to the team. In goal, sophomore Erica Painting returns after starting the final 13 games last season after an ankle injury forced her to miss parts of the first five games of the year. The Newcomers The Lady Blues will have a total of eight new faces by way of high school signees and three college transfers. Sophomore Jenna Hatlestad is a NCAA Division I transfer from Charleston Southern where she appeared in ten games in goal, starting nine recording 40 saves in 630 minutes of action. Also joining the Lady Blues from the D-I ranks is Lauren Schwindt. The sophomore was the second leading scorer on the Ragin’-Cajuns team from Louisiana-Lafayette where she scored three goals totaling nine points. The third transfer is sophomore Jamie Francis. The Topeka native joined the Lady Blues for spring drills from Ottawa, where the Braves finished their season in the NAIA Regional finals. “We’re looking for leadership from these three soccer players and for them to come in and contribute to our success, helping to build our program,” Collins said. They are joined by a quartet of freshman in defender Jolene Lutz, midfielders McKinley Rainen and Megan Garlow and forward Emily Leeper. The MIAA The Lady Blues were picked eighth in the MIAA Coaches poll, tallying 14 points. Five-time defending champion Truman State was tabbed as the team to beat as they finished with 41 points. The Bulldogs had five first place votes. The other two first place votes went to Southwest Baptist with 37 total points. The Bearcats were followed by Central Missouri in third with 33 points, Missouri-Rolla in fourth with 25 points. Northwest Missouri was picked fifth with 16 points and Emporia State and Missouri Southern were awarded 15 points, one ahead of the Lady Blues.

2003 in Review The first season of Lady Blues soccer on paper might not have been a success in the win column finishing with a 4-13-1 record, but from a standpoint of building for the future it was nothing but a success. Washburn opened its program with a 5-1 victory over Ottawa University at the Lady Blues soccer field on Sept. 3 infront of nearly 350 fans who came to see history. The Lady Blues did not dissapoint scoring 13 minutes into the match on a goal by freshman midfielder Meagan Horvath. The Lady Blues learned quickly what it was like to play as a new program in the MIAA as they dropped their first weekend road trip falling to Missouri-Rolla 1-0 and to Missouri Southern 3-1. Returning home to face non-conference foe East Central, the Lady Blues put together a frantic comeback scoring two goals in the final six-plus minutes of the match to notch the program’s first win over a NCAA Division II school. The win over the Tigers would be the last taste of victory the Lady Blues would have over the next 32 days as they entered the meat of the MIAA slate falling in seven straight matches including a 7-0 loss to No. 13 Truman State and a 4-0 loss to No. 1 ranked NebraskaOmaha. Despite the tough stretch, the Lady Blues rebounded to top Northwest Missouri 4-1 on Oct. 8 and gained their first winning streak by topping Missouri Southern the next time out 3-2. Washburn even went on the continue their streak of matches without a loss against Emporia State garnering a 1-1 tie in double overtime. However, the Lady Blues would go on to fall in their final four matches, including a pair of tough overtime losses to Missouri-Rolla by a score of 1-0 as the Miners scored in the second extra frame and a 2-1 loss to Central Missouri in overtime to wrap up the season. The Lady Blues placed three on the all-MIAA honorable mention team in a trio of freshmen in forward Jenna Lawless, midfielder Horvath and defender Monica Ruiz. Horvath also was named the team’s first most valuable player. She led the team with four assists and finished with 14 points total scoring five goals on the season. She also led the team with 22 shots on goal and 53 total shots.

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a 10-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Missouri and Kansas, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 15 years, the league has undergone several changes, highlighted by expansion and increased participation in national championships. The MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 11 national championships and more than 100 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts conference championships in eight men's and
eight women's sports. Men's champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, baseball, tennis, and golf. Women's champions are determined in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field, softball and tennis. Ralph McFillen was named to succeed Ken B. Jones as commissioner of the MIAA in January 1997, and took over in July of that year. He formerly served as commissioner of the Metro and Gulf South conferences. Matt Newbery, formerly an assistant sports information director at Pittsburg State University, joined the conference in July 1994 as director of sports information.
