WASHBURN ICHABOD WOMEN’S TENNIS 2021 SEASON OUTLOOK After a shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19, the Washburn women’s tennis team looks to spring back into competition in 2021. The team held a 4-4 overall record when the rest of the season was cancelled on March 17, 2020. The Ichabods return six from its previous season roster, while welcoming in two newcomers. Despite the shortened season, the Ichabods had three named to the ITA Regional poll, in its final rankings of the season. The duo of senior Logan Morrissey and junior Svea Crohn ranked second in the region, after ending the season with a 10-5 overall record. The Ichabods also had three players ranked in the top-15 in singles competition. Junior Maria Soler Valverde was ranked No. 6, finishing the season with a 9-5 record while playing the No. 1 spot for the Ichabods. Morrissey ranked at No. 9 while going 7-7 in singles action. Crohn ranked No. 15 with a 9-4 overall record.

opponent Missouri Western State. The team then hosts a non-conference matchup against Southern Arkansas on April 10. The team then checks off two more conference matchups, traveling to Hays, Kan., to face Fort Hays State on April 16 then Kearney, Neb., to face University of NebraskaKearney on April 17. The Ichabods close out their season at home, hosting Northwest Missouri State on April 23. The MIAA Tournament will be held in Edmond, Okla., on April 30-May 2.

Soler Valverde also earned MIAA weekly honors on March 9, 2020, after going 4-0 the week prior. She played No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles when she blanked both opponents Bethel and Tabor, 7-0. Against Bethel College, she and doubles partner Kinsey Fields blanked their opponent, 6-0. In singles, Soler Valverde swept her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at the top of the order. She went on to repeat the same results against Tabor College. Three more returners make up the 2021 team, including sophomore Fields, freshman Sydnee Foster and freshman Cadence Lynn. Fields ended the season with a 5-4 record in singles action and in doubles had a 3-6 record. Foster ended the season with a 5-3 singles record, 1-3 doubles record with partner Soler Valverde and 0-1 doubles record with Lynn. Lynn ended the season with a 4-8 singles record and went 0-5 in doubles with three different partners. Two newcomers join the team for the spring season, Maja Jung and Marta Torres. Jung will join the Ichabods after finishing up her club fall season at home in Germany. Torres will join the women from Spain.

Maria Soler Valverde earned the MIAA Tennis Athlete of the Week on March 9, 2020 after going a combined 4-0 the week before. Soler Valverde ended the shortened season with a overall 9-5 record.

The women’s tennis team will open the season at home, hosting Ottawa on Jan. 31. The Ichabods will then headto Springfield, Mo., to face Drury on Feb. 7. The team returns home on Feb. 21 to host William Jewell. The women take a road trip to Tulsa, Okla. for a matchup against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Feb. 27. The Ichabods return home to host an exhibition match against Barton County Community College on March 5, before hitting the road again to face Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., on March 10 and Valdosta State in Valdosta, Ga., on March 11. The team returns home for an exhibition match against Cowley County Community College on March 17. The women travel to St.Charles, Mo., to go head-to-head with Lindenwood on March 19, before traveling to Kansas City, Mo., to face Rockhurst on March 20. The team will kick off conference play at home, hosting Newman on March 27. The Ichabods then hit the road to Oklahoma for two more conference matchups. They face Central Oklahoma on April 2 in Edmond Okla., before going head-to-head with Northeastern State on April 3 in Tahlequah, Okla. The women return home on April 9 to host conference
