In the College of Arts & Sciences, what you study will be shaped by your unique interests and goals. At WashU, you will discover what came before, what is happening today, where we are going, and how to make a difference.

The College of Arts & Sciences, the largest undergraduate division at WashU, focuses on providing interdisciplinary opportunities that help you learn to solve problems creatively.

Our philosophy is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts—that your varied courses and academic experiences will combine to prepare you for the intellectual challenges of your future endeavors.

“In Arts & Sciences I have been able to be a part of intimate, enriching classroom settings. I have formed close relationships with the faculty, who have introduced me to new ideas, career paths, research, and perspectives.” Kelly, Class of 2022 Majors: English and German Hometown: Park Ridge, Illinois

“The first thing I noticed in my science classes was how supportive and engaging the professors are— their goal truly is to help us learn, and their excitement about the content is contagious.” Preston, Class of 2024 Major: Chemistry Hometown: Mobile, Alabama

79% of science majors participate in faculty-mentored undergraduate research.

66% of A&S students have majors or second majors in humanities and social science fields.

80% of students who participate in our PreHealth advising program are admitted to medical school the first time they apply.

Learn from the best. Our faculty are leaders in their fields, routinely recognized for their innovative research and teaching excellence. Take a class with a Guggenheim Fellow, work in the lab of a NASA researcher, or collaborate with a Mellon Scholar on your own research.

A&S students explore many topics and fields, taking classes in an average of six departments outside their major each year.
