The McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis is a place where you can push the boundaries of what it means to learn. Here, you’ll explore your interests across multiple disciplines, including medicine, artificial intelligence, and renewable sources and climate change. When you graduate, you’ll join a community of engineers who work to solve global challenges and improve the quality of life for humanity.

“I picked WashU mainly for its collaborative environment, and I like how WashU focuses so much on hands-on work. In a lot of places, one only ever learns the “theory” of engineering but never really gets to use what they’ve learned until they start a job. Here, however, I’ve already been able to apply my skills, including working in the machine shop and Spartan Light Metals Makerspace.” Tomás, Class of 2025 Major: BS in mechanical engineering Hometown: Glen Rock, New Jersey

“I chose WashU because of the flexibility in its course and major options. I also really appreciated the sense of community provided by the professors, my fellow students, and the Danforth Scholar Program, which I am a member of.” Katy, Class of 2025 Major: BS in electrical engineering Hometown: New York

WHY WASHU ENGINEERING

Top 10 reasons 1. We’re not just a top university and world leader in research and education—we’re solving challenges that affect our community and the world. See how on Instagram at @washuengineers.

3. We offer more than one path to your goal—70 percent of engineering undergraduate students pursue a second degree, a combined graduate degree, or a minor, often in a non-engineering discipline.

2. We believe in learning by doing— which has earned us the No. 15 spot on Niche. You’ll conduct research with the best faculty in engineering, medicine, and the sciences. In fact, 60 percent of undergraduate students conduct research or take part in independent study. 4. We encourage you to study abroad, including in engineeringspecific programs offered in Scotland, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, England, and New Zealand.

5. You’ll be part of a global alumni network of more than 23,000 industry leaders, including NASA’s chief astronaut, a Nobel laureate, and the co-founder of Square.

6. Our beautiful campus features a state-of-the-art engineering complex, including our two newest academic buildings, Jubel Hall and McKelvey Hall.

7. You’ll join other students and get involved through building race cars and rockets and inspiring young students to study STEM. We have over 450 student organizations across WashU, so you can explore all your interests.

8. You’ll have a chance to explore all your interests— in the classroom and outside of it. Despite less than 20 percent of the WashU student body being athletes, more than 27 percent of those athletes are engineering majors.

9. Do you want to build a product or start a company? We help students turn an idea into a product, company, or social movement through our unique entrepreneurship resources and makerspace facilities. 10. Cost will not be a barrier—we fully meet demonstrated financial need of admitted students.
