The Beyond Boundaries Program
is for students interested in collaborative problem-solving.
You will build your skills to tackle complex challenges— like climate change, poverty, and ethical artificial intelligence—that are best addressed by bringing together experts from diverse fields. We will support you in pursuing your unique interests and deepening your ability to work with others who bring different knowledge. Together, you will solve real-world problems that are important to you. In your first year, you will take interdisciplinary courses and a group seminar. Many students explore the connections across
WashU’s undergraduate divisions and graduate schools before declaring a major. Throughout your four years, the program will help you identify opportunities and prepare for careers in interdisciplinary fields.
Your journey with Beyond Boundaries begins with three questions:
1 | What role(s) do I want to play on collaborative problem-solving teams?
2 | What skills and knowledge are necessary for interdisciplinary work?
3 | How can I use my time at Washington University to grow these skills?

Why did you choose WashU?
WashU captured me with flexible academic programs that spoke to my myriad interests, all housed within a collaborative environment and beautiful campus. Through the Rodriguez Scholar Program, I knew I would have a community to support me through all of my academic and extracurricular ambitions. After touring campus and getting a sample of the endless resources and opportunities combined with the passion and diversity of the people and ideas, I knew that WashU was the school for me.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR MAJOR AND MINOR?
I have a wide range of academic interests, which influenced the major and minor I chose. Through my major in Psychological & Brain Sciences, I can explore
the psychology field through the different lenses of social sciences and STEM, giving me a unique perspective on my premedical aspirations. My minor in Music has allowed me to pursue my musical passions, which are just as integral to my educational and future ambitions as my major.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT ST. LOUIS?
St. Louis has an incredible community that expands far past the downtown area, with great culture and venues to explore. My favorite is Forest Park. In addition to its proximity to WashU, it has amazing scenic trails, fantastic performances at The Muny, and great exhibits at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

CLASS OF 2025 | NAPERVILLE, IL | COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES HOMETOWN SCHOOL
Why did you choose WashU?
I fell in love with WashU primarily because of the people and the sense of support and inclusion that’s palpable on campus. While I was matched to WashU through QuestBridge, I honestly can’t imagine being anywhere else. Within a month of being here, I’d already formed valuable friendships with my roommate, the people on my floor, and my classmates. The genuine kindness and willingness to help that every student, professor, and faculty member expresses make me feel right at home. In addition to the communities I’m a part of,
the challenging classes and culture that fosters hard work, growth, and achievement are important factors that led me to choose WashU.
FAVORITE PLACE ON CAMPUS?
My favorite place on campus is my residential floor, TFL (Top Floor Lien!). Within the first week of school, all of us on the floor got incredibly close and became one big family. Coming back to my floor after a long day of classes is one of the best parts of the day, and I’m so grateful to have all of these people whom I genuinely trust and love.

CLASS OF 2023 | WESTPORT, CT | OLIN BUSINESS SCHOOL HOMETOWN SCHOOL
Rohan
Why did you choose WashU?
I picked WashU because of its focus on the undergraduate experience, as well as the inspiring campus and opportunities to grow that come with it.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE COURSE AND WHY?
My favorite course has been Introduction to Environmental Engineering. It was my first real taste of what environmental engineering is like and made me excited for the potential going forward.
ARE YOU PERFORMING ANY RESEARCH IN A LAB?
Yes, I am a part of Dr. Zhen (Jason) He’s lab. My current research is focused on treating pollutants in wastewater using advanced oxidation processes. I’m helping a local wastewater
treatment plant with a pollutant that’s affecting their treatment process, and I’m trying to prove a method they can use to degrade the pollutant and return to normal operation.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW STUDENT?
Make sure to budget time for yourself every week. It can be easy to get caught up in the intensity of engineering, but joining activities that you genuinely enjoy, making friends in other schools, and continuing/finding new hobbies can help take the pressure off.
55 54
CLASS OF 2023 | WARREN, NJ | MCKELVEY SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING HOMETOWN SCHOOL
Why did you choose WashU?
I chose WashU because of the balance I sought between being in an intensive architecture program while still maintaining a fulfilling social life.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR MAJOR AND MINOR?
I chose to come to WashU for Architecture because of its emphasis on teaching the design process and the ability to explore many topics that intersect architecture. This comes into play through my minor, Creative Practice for Social Change, through which I can study how architecture impacts social, economic, and environmental systems. Many courses and clubs I have been in prioritize engaging the community directly, which is what drew me to WashU.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS?
My favorite spot is outside of Parkside Café on a nice day, because the campus takes on a new life when everyone is outside and enjoying the sun.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT ST. LOUIS?
My favorite thing about St. Louis is being right next to Forest Park, making it so easy to go on walks to the Saint Louis Art Museum or the zoo.
57 56
CLASS OF 2025 | HOUSTON, TX | SAM FOX SCHOOL OF DESIGN HOMETOWN & VISUAL ARTS SCHOOL
Amelie
Why did you choose WashU?
The main reason was the Sam Fox curriculum. Most art schools on my radar utilized a tracked curriculum, making it nearly impossible to explore my options before deciding which major I was going to pursue. In addition to this, I was accepted into the Portfolio Plus Program over the summer before my senior year, and during that time, I got to know some of the faculty and how Sam Fox ran their classes. I fell in love with the campus and met so many like-minded people. Because of all that, I knew I had to go to WashU.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE SAM FOX SCHOOL?
I love how collaborative and open the atmosphere here is. For instance, my drawing professor focuses on the fundamentals, but he doesn’t
want us to lose our own form of natural drawing style or focus only on making everything look photorealistic.
WHY ARE YOU DRAWN TO DESIGN?
I really like the idea of using design to solve problems— whether it’s communication design, graphic design, or fashion design. I’m really into the idea of sustainable fashion. People dismiss the big impact the fashion industry has on climate change. They think, “Oh, it’s just clothes.” But I believe that anything can be designed better, whether that means more efficiently or more sustainably. I almost view it as a math or science problem in my art.

Connor CLASS OF 2023 | EVANSVILLE, IN | SAM FOX SCHOOL OF DESIGN HOMETOWN & VISUAL ARTS SCHOOL
Why did you choose WashU?
When I visited WashU, I truly felt like I was home. I know that is extremely clichéd, but it is honestly the truth. I could see myself on this campus for the next four years. I loved the small class sizes, the professors, the beautiful campus, and everyone I met. I also really loved the research opportunities offered through the university. Not only was my financial aid package phenomenal, but I also was admitted into the Beyond Boundaries Program, which was something I really wanted to be a part of.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE BEYOND BOUNDARIES PROGRAM?
I chose the Beyond Boundaries Program because it is a program that allows me to explore all different studies I wish to pursue. It helped me incorporate all my different
interests into the major(s) I decided to declare. People often have a misconception that this program is only for undecided students. Yes, some of us are undecided at first, but we all know our interests. We all know what we love; we just need to figure out how we are going to pursue all that we love.
FAVORITE PLACE ON CAMPUS?
My favorite place on campus is the outdoor space in the middle of Simon Hall. This is my favorite spot because there are plenty of tables and study space. It is a nice way to get outside and not be attacked by bugs (like if you were to sit in the grass somewhere to do work). There is plenty of sunshine and greenery.

“Teaching undergraduate students at WashU is the most meaningful part of my job. I work every day to encourage them to have an intellectual life to complement and enrich their career pursuits, to become more knowledgeable about Latin America and the world, and to be both citizens aware of the most important issues of our days and audience members critical of our complex media environments. For the past 17 years, it has been my mission and my greatest honor to work with our brilliant students and to play a part in their careers and their personal growth.”

ShiNung Ching
“I love working with WashU architecture undergraduates because they’re intellectually curious and fearlessly creative. They learn and experiment through making physical models and drawings and, ultimately, discover new architectural possibilities that surprise me every time we work together. They are preparing to go out into the world and make incredible buildings and public spaces that address the social, political, and ecological issues of our time. WashU undergrads understand architecture as a cultural endeavor and are preparing to transform the world.”
“I enjoy talking with students about their many goals and interests, and especially learning about the problems and challenges they are most eager to solve. Seeing them work hard through their degrees to meet and expand these goals is one of the best parts of teaching.”

BLACK ANTHOLOGY
“My favorite WashU tradition is Black Anthology, because the insatiable desire to see a show that no one but the cast and executive board knows the plot of has always intrigued me. And the support is endless in terms of people desiring to see our show! It also has so much history behind it, and to be a BA alum is something I will hold close to my heart long after graduation.”
