Featured Speakers Brandon Noel, MSW ’22, Student Speaker

Brandon hails from the small city of Martinsville, Virginia. After graduating high school, he joined the U.S. United States Marine Corps and served on active duty from 2007 to 2015. The experiences he encountered while serving in the Marines established some of his most outstanding achievements and contributed to his values and passion for helping others. While on active duty, Brandon encountered numerous formative experiences that influenced who he is today. He had the opportunity to deploy to several countries, including Afghanistan, Romania, Spain, Libya, and Italy. His interactions in these environments opened Brandon’s eyes to new realities around how cultures differ globally. Perhaps the most significant impact he experienced was during his last mission in Afghanistan when he lost a dear friend. On November 13, 2009, Shawn Hefner was killed in action while supporting combat operations. Processing this grief led Brandon to assist others who have suffered losses or have experienced traumatic events that have impacted their lives. After being discharged from the Marines, Brandon attended Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, North Carolina, and then the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Both schools helped further expand his passion and support his goals as an MSW student. Classes here, such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Exposure Response Therapy (ERT), have contributed to his skills as a social worker and have been effective in assisting others in the healing process. Brandon’s ultimate passion is to open a space for a means to happiness through clinical therapy work. He plans to speak to mass audiences, offering motivation and encouragement for folks to find self-worth and live out their hopes and dreams.   After graduating, he aspires to impact the world positively through service to others. “I have no clear direction on where my path will take me professionally. Still, I trust that God will use me to continue to influence others, thus living behind a legacy of empathy, patience, care, and love,” he said. Brandon looks forward to learning new things, meeting new people, and taking on new challenges to contribute to his accomplishments and purpose to serve others. 14

Bethany formerly served as the St. Louis Integrated Health Network (IHN) CEO for 12 years (2009 – 2021). She led the $2.5 million nonprofit in serving the region's safety-net healthcare providers and the local community to promote the mission of providing quality, affordable, accessible care to all residents of Metropolitan St. Louis, with an emphasis on the medically underserved. Her leadership in the healthcare sector has garnered notable recognition, including being selected by Mental Health America of Eastern Missouri as a 2016 Silver Bell Award recipient for her outstanding community service, leadership, vision, and values, and being selected as St. Louis Children's Hospital 2015 Community Advocate of the Year. She possesses over 15 years of experience working and volunteering in the nonprofit sector for organizations that positively impact the quality of life for disadvantaged populations. Her expertise lies in developing strategies to transform systems to be more responsive and equitable for the people for whom our public systems are accountable to serve. As a licensed Evangelist Missionary in the Church of God in Christ, she is a noted motivational speaker, trainer, and facilitator around spiritual development and leadership.
