Jaros³aw Skutnik was born in 1963 in Kropiwnica /Podlaskie Voivodeship/.

Studies:

1985-1990 – University of Silesia in Katowice, Art Institute in Cieszyn, 1988-1993 - State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznañ.

Since 1994 he has been working at the Art Institute at the Faculty of Arts in Cieszyn at the University of Silesia in Katowice. Currently, he runs classes in classical and experimental graphics and multimedia.

In his artistic work, he focuses on graphic arts, computer graphics, drawing, painting, and he also creates installations using experimental graphic techniques. In his creative activity, he looks for opportunities to combine traditional graphic techniques with new media. In the philosophy of artistic exploration, Skutnik focuses on the category of the matrix as the original idea, the beginning and the source of creation.

He is the author of classic graphic works and experimental activities presented at many domestic and foreign exhibitions.

The presented graphic works are a kind of artist's game with the matrix, which sometimes defines the reflected image; other times, it is a pretext to modify the print until it finally disappears, is destroyed, or obliterated, as in the graphics entitled In Memoriam.

In the In Memoriam works, on a piece of paper with dimensions corresponding to the format of catalogs dedicated to the work of deceased artists, the author reprinted the contents of individual catalogs page by page. The layered text and the reproductions of works permeating it created abstract compositions - specific forms of epitaphs.

Triptychs entitled City and Leaf-Letter are examples of using one matrix to make three different prints/images. This process is an attempt at an artistic break with the model meaning of the matrix and its classical use. Other works include classic relief prints and gravure prints.

Painter and graphic artist. Studied at Faculty of Graphics at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, graphics department in Katowice, graduated in 2000, under supervision of professor Marian Oslislo from studio of graphic design and professor Roman Nowotarski, studio of painting.

Memories Fade Slowly

Our memories are like colourful postcards. With time, however, what was lively and vivid, starts fading away... It is getting harder to bring back details, places and times get confused. Everything dissolved in the haze. Soon, you can only go back to those wonderful moments, supposedly unforgettable, when watching old photos. My cycle represents just that. The starting point for each work is a colourful landscape, which is “destroyed” by subsequent layers of print. With progress of work the details vanish, colours fade away, and the original meaning disappears. New quality is created.

The theme of the matrix, imprint, print, and trace served as inspiration for creating a series of graphics that utilize geometric elements cut from a matrix, through which I created unique, one-time-only traces. I somewhat deconstructed the process of creating and printing graphics, where multiple similar but not identical prints are obtained from a single matrix. This time, the elements of the "matrix" change, and the final result in the form of the print is unique. I will employ the technique of color linocut to create three cycles of graphics, in which the main roles are played by the circle, triangle, and square. The theme of my works revolves around confinement and the attempt at liberation. I aimed to depict, in a symbolic manner, the emotions accompanying this process.
