[INTRODUCTION]

LARGE
In the late 1990s, architecture is defined in a unique perspective and described as 'incoherence, or more precisely, randomness' by Rem Koohaas in S,M,L,XL. The variation of scales, representing 'the relationship between architect and public', show the conditions of the architecture which needed to be decomposed and rebuild. Koohaas classified the architecture according to the scale but he emphasized the 'Bigness' as the consequence. Bigness represented the co-existence of separation and combination in architecture. All of this seems to a principle of scale. In reality, the architectures are various in size and cities are also in great expansion, leading to the feel of people changes according to the scale variation. From Small (S) to Large (L), people in such could feel the expansion of view and openness. However, with the continuous expansion of space, people will lose the sense of the scale on or over
ENORMOUS
MEGA
the Mega (XL) stage, which also cause the indistinctive of space. So the definition of scale could not be simply regarded as size. So, actually, the definition of scale could not only be simply regarded as size but also the complexity of spatial organization. In my personal work, architecture and urban design are also show the complexity of scale variation. Yet the variation of scale represents the different stage of spatial organization. It tried to express the relationship between scales and spatial organization. On the one hand, the design methods have something in common in processing framework. On the other hand, the complexity of architecture organization increased accompanied with the scale expansion. In the Narration of Scale, function, circulation, massing and human activity are systematically defined, engendering new types of architecture as well as social network.

[Micro City Complex] Xiangyang City Complex Design Acadamic Work, WHU, Spring 2014 Xiangyang, Hubei Province, China Traditional Chinese Cities have features of gridiron, symetry and orientation. These character are kept even today in some cities with hundreds of years history in China. Xiangyang City is one of the ancient Chinese large city originated from Han dynasty. It used to be vibrant with commercial and political activities. However, since other cities adjacent to Xiangyang own higher status in economy and industry, Xiangyang, especially ancient city become less developed and is lack of public spaces for citizens. Micro City was designed to be a catalyst of diverse
02
public activities. It continues the old urban fabric and axis which are the heritage of ancient city. At the same time, the complex itself is a modern icon and megastructure in the contemporary urban environment. The enormous massing is consist of a series of wellranged function in hybridity, maintaining a vibrant spaces over the top which shares good view and large spaces. The design process also demonstrates the complexity of large space - The expansion of scales should be accompanied by the increasing of complexity, whether it is functional or spatial.
[Functions: Dynamic on the Rooftop] Three main floors in the Complex, whose functions are defined according to scale and activities. On the one
hand, dynamic function are arranged on the roof top.
[Site: Uniform with the Xiangyang Ancient City] Located in the center of the Xiangyang Ancient City, the site is on the axis of ancient belfry and gates. Site is
designed not only uniformed with the city grid but also created open spaces in large scales. 03

[Detail Plans] As the fuction of the architecture is so complicated, plans are designed by adding Main Circulation in the center, symbolizing main roads or the high ways in urban design, aiming at efficiency in vertical 04
transportation. Horizontally, plans are free formed and circulation varied according to scale and frequency of use.
C
[Street View Perspective]
[Mass Produce & Model] By using the feature of XiangYang and other ancient Chinese cities, the complex could be designed in
3D spaces. Regularation and Symetry are the most impressive in massing.
05
[Structure&Details] Steel frame are wildly used in get long span and free plans. To integrate different plans vertically, structures 06
are design carefully by using trusses and other balks.

[Urban Polaroid] Hudson Valley Regional and Urban Design Studio Project, GSAPP, Fall 2015 Beacon, Hudson Valley, NY, USA
Urban Polaroid frames viewpoints and moments in the city to create awareness, wayfinding, increased economy and business opportunities in the Hudson Valley. A series of architectural and landscape design projects address local and regional issues to improve the tourism industry and public transportation. The target audience for the project are visitors to New York City and the Hudson Valley with varied interests and user profiles. The project also helps local residents of the cities throughout the Hudson Valley in terms of improved transportation infrastructure and increased job opportunities. The poly-scalar interventions will be realized in collaboration with NY Waterway, local governments and existing tourist anchors. At first we studied the waterfront conditions across the valley. Most spaces adjacent to the water are populated by parking lots. Phase one of our design includes clearing up these surface parking areas and stacking them on a multi-level car parking structure that also doubles up into a mixed use complex over the course
08
of a week or day.Phase two is designed for better way finding, a path is defined based on contours and existing tourist attractions. Programs are fit into this path for the convenience of tourists with different user profiles. The third phase of the project is the construction of a multimodal transit terminal designed to suit local and tourist needs. It acts as a space of transitions and convenience. The final phase is the design of event spaces and boutique hotels on the waterfront to increase tourist and resident convenience and connectivity. Each phase is dependent on the success of the previous phase. Most spaces are designed with public program along with a private program to ensure the longevity of the project and the opportunity for public private partnerships. Wood is used as a primary material because of it local availability. The design aims at a reaching equilibrium with the existing topographic change and the characteristic nature of Beacon as a city.

[Armature Urban Model and Special Zoning Code] The current condition of cities in Hudson Valley are common in terms of separation between main street and waterfront terminal. By combining the riverfront park and terminal, an Amature Urban Model is put up for connecting riverbank and mainstreet. Different
cores or poles (“+” and “-”) is created for the engine of local and regional visits. At the same time, Special Zoning of mass-transit facilities and landscape park are recommended. 11

[Play in Exhibition] Louisville Children Museum Competition 2014 Louisvile, Kentucky, USA
Children in different Stages have different features. Young children have lower ability to lear n and acknowledge while senior children could learn from various kinds of media. What’s more, the ability of concentration among children vary from preschool age to adolescent. Play in Exhibition is a concept from the playing and learning process of children. The spacial prototype are intentionally designed according to requirements of kids in different age. To meet all
14
children's demands, exhibitions are tailored into several parts. In the design process, various kinds of circulation and spatial organization are used to create more possibilities. Also, sharing space, known as common exhibition is included. Continuous display surfaces are not only where kids explore, but also where they touch, walk and play, with a series of interesting scene shown here...

[ Comparision: Traditional Exhibition and Children Museum Exhibition ] Traditional Museums arrange there exhibition seperately and calmly. However, it is a little bit difficult for traditional ways of exhibition to accommodate to display aimed at adolecents. Exhibition with more flexibility could be
created for teenagers by using conguent circulation, miscellaneous display media and various scales of exhibits adapted to different space.
[ Northwest Perspective ] 15
[ I ]Single Circulation/Specific Single Circulation is designed for youngest children, for guidance and concerntration is necessary for the group of users. Playing space are inserted into exhibition as intermittence.
[ II ]Advanced Circulation/Specific Advanced Circulation is designed for elder childern. More freedom is required in playing circulation. Even with different path, they could find the intersection to finish exhibition.
[ III ]Complex Circulation/Specific Complex Circulation is designed for teenagers. As this group of users are much positive in exhibition than playing, more exhibition with various themes are included in this circulation type.
[ IV ]Single Circulation/Public Single Circulation is designed for all users to go back to ground floor, which connected the rooftop and the first floor plan. The spiral like circulation consists of exhibition space and ramps interval.
[ Circulation Inside ]
With the circulation pattern, a detailed circulation inside the musuem is planned. In specail exhibition, the route vary from single to complex according to feature of 16
children in different stages. In common exhibition, the single circulation are design to meet all demands.

[Temporary Shelter] Research Project 2013 - 2015
Covered with various kinds of landscapes, China is a country who suffer from severe natural disasters such as earthquakes every year. Quake-prone areas are often confronted with homelessness and lack of space for survival, for no enough tents are produced in a short period. However, the spiral structure could be a possible shelter for homeless people after earthquakes.
18
As this type of tent could be retract in a compact form, it could easily be transported. When using, people could build up this structure without difficulties. Also, the spiral structure will divide functional spaces by itself. Flexible but steady, this tent could integrate all components and is less likely to be torned down by seismic force.
[ Rotation: From 2D to 3D ] Variation in centers and axis of rotation, Logrithmic Spiral could form many types of 3D models with congruent surface inside. Among all these potential forms, a series of rotation are determined and
overlapped to make a kinetic consequence. In reality, when developing into an architecture, it could be a kind of portable and movable structure.
[Structure: Anti-Seismic Construction] Practically, the 3D spiral structure used in earthquake area could be an anti-seismic construction to protect people from aftershock, for it has a more uniformed
skeleton. Athough distortion happens, the structure could be stable as a contemporary shelter. 19

[X-Information System] Paramatric Design and Analysis X-Information, Visual Study, GSAPP, Fall 2015 Equitable Building, New York, USA
X-Information is a system which established on a holistic approach to economic, environmental and social problems that allowed for speculation on possible futures for the city. By giving the definition of ‘X’, architecture as well as urban design are infilled with data or parameter, which provide more possibilities and flexibilities in design systems. Using this methodology termed X-Information Modeling or XIM, parametric design tools are leveraged to create systems that strategically integrated diverse objectives and, through Grasshopper for Rhino, visualized potential scenarios for a more informed decision making process. In the practice of the X-Information tool in skyscrapers design, an old tower named ‘Equitable’ became the target in terms of sunlight, shadow as well as view performances.
22
The pre-analysis of the building provided the benchmark or baseline (which could be the X-Info.). Several rules of evaluation was created by integrating factors and using different weight matrix. The X-Information system then calculated and generated new design under the control of X-Info. rules, from which a bunch of options with scores are visualized to guide the renovation of the project. X-Information system can be practical as the data beyond the architecture and urban model is operable. It is essential for the bottom-up design method, for the feedback loop continuously affect the design results, so that architects and designers would animate, visualize and renovate projects for the concepts and ultimate goals.
[Original Building Baseline] The original Equitable Building was tested based on the five factors in terms of space, sun, shadow and view.

[Caidian Port Renovation] Caidian Port City Design, Academic Group Work, WHU, Spring 2014 Caidian, Wuhan, Hubei, China
Located alongside the Hanjiang River, Cadian plays an important role in manufacturing and transportation. With the expansion of Wuhan, Caidian will be developed in a faster speed in 20 years.According to the data from Wuhan Publishing House, the Caidian Port used to have great capacity of cargo transportation. However, after depression of local economy, the port is gradually deserted along with local factories, leading to the shrinking of population here. But with the plan that government decide to thrive the Caidian district, this port area could be the core of new
24
satellite city in the future. So it could be predicted that the port will be renovated in the approaching decades. From the current condition and history, the potential of Caidian to be a port city is so evident that several strategies are put forward to trigger the new development of this area. The design is targeted to create an efficient transportation and logistics industry, a culture park as well as livable communities. Through the renovation process, Caidian could be another vibrant satellite city near Wuhan and be a local and regional engine of economy.

[Green Haven] NYCHA Property Renovation Proposal & Urban Design Studio Project, GSAPP, Summer 2015 Bronx, New York, NY, USA
-Integrating greenhouses with community activities to form a healthy and safe neighborhood. Mott Haven is a community with rich cultural heritage and optimistic people looking for opportunities and change. One of the major food distributors, hunts point, is located in the Bronx yet Mott haven is still categorized as a food desert. The differences in the various geographic locations of the community are the reasons for much of its crime. Through the example of the friends of Brook Park we have identified food as a common factor that can solve many social problems in this community. Having a centralized production unit for green house manufacturing and growth
28
of vegetables will not only increase the economic conditions of the neighborhood but also will give people more access to fresh food and better health. Based on the shadow study and the existing land use zoning we have identified ideal spaces in NYCHA campuses to grow food. We then looked into how these places can also be programmed as venues that the community can use as amenities. All the green houses implemented in the community will be a modular design that can easily be manufactured and transported. Each unit is self-sufficient in terms of solar energy, storage and optimum conditions for food growth.

In 2013, Gina Bellafante of the New York Times wrote that Brownsville has “an unusual kind of promise: it is a place so immune to gentrification that it is also immune to the negative fallout from gentrification, which means it has the capacity to serve as a template for a different model of revitalization” and that, “Brownsville has an authenticity for which there is no external market”. Inspired by these sentiments, Unique Immunity Community
works toward a provocation rather than a conclusion. Its purpose is to understand and explore Brownsville’s ‘immunity’ to gentrification and the ‘authenticity’ which this immunity both depends on, and in turn, reinforces. The video first contemplates how and why this immunity has occurred, and second, reveals the psychographic manifestations of this immunity: what it looks at feels like from the inside. But what does this so-called ‘immunity’ mean for the future of Brownsville’? What is this unique kind of promise that Brownsville offers?
[Transforming Division] American Cities Academic Research, GSAPP, Fall 2015 Denver, Colorado RIver Valley, CO, USA
The Continental Divide transects the Colorado RIver Basin and Platte River Basin which defines their regional identities by their hydrological system. The unbalanced water resources between the West and East slopes exit, however, population and development are in contrast. In Colorado, Agriculture and Food industry is prosperous and profitable by water supply through trans-basin hydrological infrastructure from the West. With those water supply, vast products from Agriculture and Agribusiness
results in huge economic benefits by exporting to nationwide and worldwide. Expending of agriculture business and food processing/ manufacturing industry in Metro Denver results from their extensive agricultural products in the region with water supply in Colorado. In addition, the stringent recycling programs of Denver to conserve water lead to have one of cleanest water the region in the U.S.
