FROM THE DIRECTOR You may be seeing the extra logos on the cover of this issue of Land Savers and wondering what’s up. Well, in the parlance of industry and finance, M&As (mergers and acquisitions) and expansion are what’s up. Diligent readers of Land Savers may recall that in 2019, we merged with the Lynchburg-based Central Virginia Land Conservancy, expanding our efforts into five central Virginia counties: Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell and Nelson, along with the city of Lynchburg. In 2020, due to many Dave Perry requests over the years to take on projects in the Martinsville and Danville areas, we expanded into Halifax, Henry, Patrick and Pittsylvania counties, along with the cities of Danville and Martinsville, and formed the Southern Virginia Land Conservancy.

Each of our three units, Blue Ridge, Central, and Southern, are unique. They have their own geographies, their own demographics, their own histories and their own needs as communities. And that’s why we operate under three separate brands, depending on where we’re working. The Blue Ridge Mountains may not mean much to someone in the gently rolling Piedmont of Halifax County, while Southern Virginia may not resonate with a landowner in New Castle. We want to keep things local and relevant, and that’s why each of our units has at least one staff member, an advisory committee of local volunteers, its own website and social media presence, and its own mailing address and phone number.

But we’re all one organization behind the scenes, sharing resources, people-power and expertise.

Inside this issue of Land Savers, you’ll get to read a brief report from each of our three branches, written by the folks who are working there. I hope you’ll enjoy reading about what’s happening across our 16-county service area, which stretches from the New River in the west, north to the top of Afton Mountain, and south to Buggs Island Lake at the North Carolina border.

Me? I’m keeping an eye on the big picture. And I want to share a special invitation to join the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy at its 25th anniversary Conservation Celebration & Auction on Oct. 3 atop Mill Mountain in Roanoke. In addition to our usual spread of great food, local beer, wine and spirits, live music and live and silent auctions, we’ll be honoring the good folks of the Mill Mountain Garden Club with the A. Victor Thomas Environmental Stewardship Award. Not only do these folks do exceptional conservation work and advocacy at the local, state and national levels, but their newly-renovated wildflower garden on the mountaintop celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

M

adelyn is a 2021 graduate of Virginia Tech. She majored in Natural Resource Conservation with a concentration in Conservation and Recreation Management and a minor in Forestry. She will be attending graduate school at Tech as well to earn her Master of Natural Resources degree. After grad school she hopes to work to make a difference in the outdoor community and ensure natural resources are conserved.

“I am very grateful to be able to work with Blue Ridge Land Conservancy. It has been a great opportunity that has taught me so much about conserving lands. I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to go into the field and see the lands BRLC is conserving. It has been an eye opening experience to learn about each aspect of a conservation easement and the time and effort that goes into the process. I appreciate Blue Ridge Land Conservancy for taking the time to teach me new skills and knowledge that I will use in the future,” she says.

CENTRAL VIRGINIA LAND CONSERVANCY

This spring and summer has been busy here at Central Virginia Land Conservancy! Conservation easements, natural walks, and event planning have been on the agenda. CVALC has approved one easement in Campbell County and we are currently working on four more easements in Campbell, Bedford, and Appomattox.

We are excited to be potentially protecting nearly 1000 acres in central Virginia! Earlier this summer I was invited to a butterfly walk hosted by the Central Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Naturalist Program in Nelson County. We walked the Rockfish Valley Trail, which is under an easement with Virginia Outdoors Foundation, while we identified and counted butterflies. This was a great opportunity to connect with others who are interested in environmental conservation!

A Note from SOUTHERN VIRGINIA LAND CONSERVANCY

By Chris Holden, Program Manager With the easing of Covid restrictions the Southern Virginia Land Conservancy has been eager to get back into the swing of things with helping the residents and landowners of Southside Virginia in their conservation efforts. Currently we have 2 new easements that are in the works along with several others that have recently been completed. These new easements are scattered throughout the entire Southside region and will protect upwards of 400 acres of beautiful Southside Virginia. Along with efforts in the field we are also working on and planning the first annual Conservation Celebration a fundraising event to celebrate the conservation efforts of the SVALC. This event is scheduled to take place Spring of 2022.

SVALC will also be hosting landowners at local venues in an effort to reach out to

potential easement donors throughout the region and will be announcing locations and times for these meetings throughout the fall. These meetings will hopefully put conservation minded landowners on the path to Easements in the future. Finally I am pleased to announce the acceptance of two prominent members of the Southside community to the Board of Directors Dr. David Jones, Orthodontist from Martinsville VA and Sonja Ingram, Preservation Field Services Manager for Preservation Virginia.

It’s a common theme in our letters, but it’s true: we’ve been busy over the past few months at the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy. Whether it has been continuing to show Chris and Alicia the ropes of conservation easements, assisting with our 25th anniversary Conservation Celebration & Auction, or visiting landowners in Craig, Floyd, Franklin, and beyond, it’s full steam ahead!

As we approach our 100th conservation easement, I want to pause and thank all the volunteers, donors, and landowners for contributing in their own ways to this milestone.

Without your help we wouldn’t be who we are today. Looking to the future, we are in the beginning steps of examining how we can be more effective and strategic in land conservation to protect the mountains, fields, and forests you love.

A View of the W

ith a name like Suck Mountain, you certainly would not expect spectacular views. That is exactly what you get from Lynn and Kathy Spradlin’s front yard. The Spradlins protected their property forever with a conservation easement held by the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy in the fall of 2020. The Peaks of Otter are an iconic view in central Virginia. Anyone who has traveled on the Blue Ridge Parkway or highway 460 between Bedford and Roanoke should instantly recognize these looming peaks called Flat Top and Sharp Top (there is a lesser third peak called Harkening Hill that is not as visible due to its location and lower elevation). On the drive to the Spradlin home, there are several views of the two peaks, but it is hard to beat the view from their front yard. It is a view anyone would be envious of.

Both he and Kathy fell in love with the land when they saw it. Not wanting to live in a subdivision, they decided to purchase more parcels around them to prevent development. The current easement includes 333 acres of land on Suck Mountain that is preserved forever. The land is a mix of forest and meadow that is excellent for hunting.

During my visit, Lynn expressed to me numerous times how important it was to conserve the land and native species. While this particular property does not go far back in his immediate family, he did impress upon me the importance of its history.

Some of his ancestors were a part of the Johnson family that owned the old Johnson Farm at Peaks of Otter. (Visitors can hike to the Johnson Farm from peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway.) Roy Israel once owned the land the Spradlins currently live on. Lynn tells me that Roy Israel drove a taxi in Bedford during the 1940s and was

responsible for delivering telegrams to the families telling them of the casualties of the famous Bedford Boys. During our drive around the property, he shows me an old truck that once belonged to Roy Israel.

It sits near a deer stand – one built by his son - that he calls “Randall’s Folly.” At one point an old cabin stood on the land but has since fell down, the chimney crushing the old truck.

In another area further up on the property, he talks fondly of how his grown sons hunt and explore the land. Lynn takes a keen interest in identifying native and invasive species in hopes of preserving the former.

At one point, the American chestnut thrived in these parts and he would like to see it make a comeback while pointing out a few that were still standing. He tells me ginseng used to grow in the mountains and could probably still be found if you knew what to look for. We stop at several spots just to enjoy the peaceful scenery, admiring the blooming mountain laurel along the way. On the property not far from their

home, he told me that ravens were nesting in an old open pit mine. As we rode the Gator to the spot, he said he hoped they would be there. Sure enough, when we arrived and shut off the Gator and raucous noise arose through the woods. We did not see them but we stood there for quite a while listening as the ravens called and answered each other. It was an incredible experience and Lynn was tickled to be able to share it.

When I asked Lynn why he decided to put a conservation easement on his property he told me a friend had done one and told him about it. It was a no brainer, considering his love the land and desire to preserve it. He has a neighbor he is currently trying to convince to put an easement on his property and encourages others to consider the option. Lynn says, “if you want to see the land remain as it is a conservation easement is a great way to go.” And it is clear the Lynn and Kathy are happy with their decision, and their beautiful view.

They have been at the forefront of many supported and successful efforts such as Litter Bugs and Scoop the Poop. The club has inspired Roanoke City to recycle by placing “how to” stickers on bins and has educated the public on alternatives to single use plastics by handing out reusable grocery bags outside of Kroger.

n June 29, 1927, 21 friends came together to form the Mill Mountain Garden Club. The friends vowed to “stimulate and encourage the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs, to aid in the protection of native plants and birds, and to promote civic planting and allied subjects.” 94 years later, that vow has remained intact; the only change is now 85 members uphold that promise.

This year’s A. Victor Thomas Environmental Stewardship award will be presented to Mill Mountain Garden Club on October 3, 2021 at the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy’s Conservation Celebration and Auction (see page 10 or visit partyforland.org for more details).

Given annually by the land conservancy, this award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the preservation of the natural heritage of western Virginia. Mill Mountain Garden Club embodies this award by

continuing their mission of conservation, beautification, community, education, and horticulture.

The club has been a large part of the Roanoke community since it began in 1927. MMGC has brought Roanoke natives, as well as visitors, together

Mill Mountain Garden Club’s most notable community project has been the Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden.

Located atop the mountain near the zoo, the wildflower garden provides a place for people to gather, enjoy being outdoors, and learn about native plants and trees.

When one visits, they might even see a wedding or hear a string quartet practicing in the amphitheater.

The Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden has been a Roanoke staple since fall of 1971.

It took 4 years and a lot of hard work to be completed in 1975. Roanoke City Parks and Recreation were the ones who reached out to MMGC to see if they would develop and take care of the wildflower

garden. Fast forward to 2018, when the garden club put a plan into place to restore and improve the garden so visitors can continue to enjoy the garden for many years to come. The restoration included creating a more inviting entrance, universal trail access, restoring the pond, adding and expanding native plants and pollinators, and increasing educational features. With the help of Art Garst, an expert from Asheville, the restoration was completed earlier this year.

Two important aspects of the restoration were the pathways and the pond. The club, and Garst, were able to redesign the trails to be ADA compliant without damaging the natural beauty. This news delighted Roanokers and was featured in the Roanoke Times, Blue Ridge Public Television, and PBS. The old pond from the early 1980s had begun to leak and erode. The new pond built has added a great ecosystem to the garden with some help from Virginia Tech. Tech’s Dr. Sarah Karpenty

of the College of Natural Resources and Environment along with 4 seniors assisted the garden club by introducing native frogs into the pond. The club members enjoy watching the frogs thrive in the pond.

One proud member of the garden club is Jane Coulter. Jane has been a member since 1980 but she actually grew up interacting with the club. Her mother was a member who taught her the fundamentals of gardening and inspired Jane to get into the field as well. Jane enjoyed being in the garden and partaking in outdoor activities growing up, so following in her mother’s footsteps and becoming a part of MMGC was an obvious choice. Her favorite aspect of the club is the friendships, being involved, and betterment of the community.

Being a part of the club has opened her eyes to conservation and describes it as a “classroom without walls.” Over the years she has enjoyed partaking in different activities such as flower arranging, outdoor events like

hiking, and educating the community about environmental stewardship.

Another member is Whitney Feldman, who has been a member since 2006. She was also a long time board member of the land conservancy and is on the Mill Mountain Advisory Board. She has always been involved in conservation and even put her farm under an easement with VOF. She decided to join the garden club to spend more time with her friends after retiring from teaching. Whitney liked the direction the club was going in for conservation and wanted to be a part of the efforts. Whitney assisted in the process of planting and designing the pollinator garden area.

The Mill Mountain Garden Club volunteers at the wildflower garden every Thursday and is always looking for help. There are possibilities for a “Friends of the Garden” program in the works.
