HISTORY
Founded in 1891 as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), WVSU has evolved to serve a student population that is richly diverse in ethnicity, geography, residential/commuter, recent high school graduates and adult learners.

WVSU awards degrees in 23 undergraduate programs in the arts, sciences, business, education, and professional studies. Keith Scholars Hall, a new suite-style residence hall, opened in August, 2014. Featuring suite-style living with two, three and four bedroom suites, this 291 bed complex offers 78 furnished suites plus 10 apartment units. All students have individual bedrooms. A multi-purpose room that seats 150, a café, study lounge and game room are just a few of the amenities included in the new hall.

Fleming Hall was transformed into a fullblown Convocation Center. Opened in February 2014, the new D. Stephen and Diane H. Convocation Center is home to campus sporting events such as basketball and volleyball, and also houses larger campus events like graduation. WVSU has long boasted one of the most affordable tuition costs in West Virginia. The cost combined with an excellent academic and student life experience results in tremendous value for our students. We know that paying for college can be stressful. Staff in our Office of Student Financial Assistance is ready to help you identify options to finance your education and fulfill your dreams. The first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can link to it directly at fafsa.gov or from wvstateu.edu. Submit the FAFSA by March 1 to be considered for the most funding options.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Each year, WVSU awards scholarships to new students who have shown they have what it takes to be successful here. Any new student will be considered for scholarships based on their application for admission. Funds are limited so apply early! In addition, newly admitted students will be considered for Research Rookies and the University Honors Program.
